Anthony Kim, Tuesday 8/12, 4:56 PM CT
The eight automatic spots were awarded for the United States Ryder Cup team after the completion of the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday, according to TSN.ca. Stewart Cink, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry and Anthony Kim had their places wrapped up before the first round of the PGA Championship. Justin Leonard was in sixth and relatively safe, but could've been caught under the right circumstances. Ben Curtis' second-place finish at Oakland Hills jumped him into the seventh spot. Boo Weekley fell into eighth and will make his Ryder Cup debut at Valhalla. Of that group, only Kim will stand as a Ryder Cup rookie.

Our View: Curtis' rise pushes Steve Stricker out of the mix but could still make the team if he is one of the four players picked by captain Paul Azinger in three weeks. On September 2nd, Azinger will announce his four selections for the team that will try and wrestle the Ryder Cup away from Europe. The Euro Team will not be finalized for another three weeks.
Tiger Woods, Tuesday 8/12, 4:49 PM CT
Tiger Woods is riding a stationary bike two or three times a day but the top golfer in the world does not expect to be able to swing a club for another five months and gave no indication of his return to competitive golf, according to ESPN.com. Woods "As far as swinging a club, that's not going to happen until next year," Woods said in a newsletter sent Tuesday to readers of his Web site, TigerWoods.com. "I just don't have a choice. We simply don't know what type of swelling there would be or if there would be any residual effects the next day once you start wheeling and dealing on the knee. Everyone's body reacts differently. I could putt right now, but I'm not going to do it."

Our View: Woods, 32, had reconstructive surgery on his left knee on June 24th, just eight days after his dramatic playoff victory over Rocco Mediate at the U.S. Open. Woods was in noticeable pain throughout the U.S. Open because of two stress fractures in his left tibia suffered during rehab. That injury coupled with the need to repair a torn ACL made Woods opt for the season-ending surgery. He had a graft taken from his right hamstring to repair the ACL. In the newsletter, Woods said he initially lost about 10 pounds after surgery and has been busy with duties associated with his AT&T National golf tournament, golf course design business, a new video game and endorsements.
Luke Donald, Tuesday 8/12, 4:42 PM CT
We have learned Luke Donald has, as anticipated, undergone surgery to repair his ailing wrist, according to SkySports.com. "While there is never a good time for an injury, the timing of this injury was especially disappointing for me considering it forced me to miss the Open Championship and it comes in a Ryder Cup year," Donald said. "But taking proper care of it is my highest priority."

Our View: As a result, Donald will be forced off the course for the remainder of the 2008 season, including the upcoming Ryder Cup tourney, a rather large disappointmetn for the Euro Team who was hoping to see Donald return to form as one of their more reliable contributors. Donald indicates he will begin rehabilitation exercises in six weeks and hopes to be working on the putting and chipping green in approximately three months.
