Petr Sykora, RW, Pittsburgh PenguinsMonday 6/2, 11:58 PM CT
Petr Sykora netted the game-winner in the third overtime on Monday night (Tuesday morning) to send the Stanley Cup finals into Game 6. Sykora didn't have a point in the previous four games.

Our View: Sykora is coming off his highest regular season point total (63) since 2000-01, but he'd been quiet recently. He won't forget this one for a while.
Sergei Gonchar, D, Pittsburgh PenguinsMonday 6/2, 10:55 PM CT
Sergei Gonchar was taken to the locker room after he fell head-first in the boards during the second period of Game 5 against the Red Wings. The defenseman returned for the third period, the AP reports.

Our View: The trainers probably couldn't keep this veteran from rushing back to a decisive Stanley Cup game.
Ryan Malone, LW, Tampa Bay LightningMonday 6/2, 10:51 PM CT
Ryan Malone took a shot to the face in the second period on Monday night and left the game, the Ticker notes. The forward broke his nose in the series opener against the Red Wings. Malone returned to the bench to start the third period.

Our View: You aren't such a pretty boy now, are you Malone? Joking aside, he is showing a lot of toughness.
Tim Jackman, RW, New York IslandersMonday 6/2, 6:33 PM CT
The Islanders signed forward Tim Jackman to a one-year contract extension on Monday, the Ticker confirms. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Hugh Jackman has a better chance of helping your fantasy hockey team in 2008-09.
Darren McCarty, RW, Detroit Red WingsMonday 6/2, 4:49 PM CT
Darren McCarty won't play in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Monday night because Tomas Holmstrom is ready to return, the Detroit News reports.

Our View: This news doesn't come as a surprise, as McCarty only played in Game 4 because Holmstrom was injured.
Alexandre Picard, D, Ottawa SenatorsMonday 6/2, 2:07 PM CT
Alexandre Picard has been re-signed by the Lightning, according to the AP. He agreed to a two-year extension, and financial details were not disclosed. GM Jay Feaster said, "Picard played very well for us following his acquisition and both ownership groups established re-signing him as a priority this offseason."

Our View: The defenseman was acquired from the Flyers on February 25, and scored six points (three goals) over 24 games.
Darcy Hordichuk, LW, Vancouver CanucksMonday 6/2, 7:55 AM CT
The Predators have made an offer to Darcy Hordichuk, but he may decide to become a free agent, according to the Tennessean. GM David Poile said, "We told him we'd like to have him back and we have made him an offer, but we don't have an acceptance at this point. A year ago at this time, we offered him a two-year deal and he only wanted one."

Our View: Hordichuk only played in 45 games due to injuries in 2007-08, and held no fantasy value with one goal and two assists.
Kirk Maltby, LW, Detroit Red WingsMonday 6/2, 7:42 AM CT
The Red Wings are only one win away from hoisting the Stanley Cup as they hold a 3-1 lead in the Finals, and Kirk Maltby commented on the Penguins, according to the Detroit News. Maltby said, "They're going to be desperate. They're fighting for their lives. They're going to want to throw everything at us, and they've got a lot over there."

Our View: Maltby will be ready tonight and is a strong penalty killer, but has not registered a point over 10 playoff games.
Chris Chelios, D, Detroit Red WingsMonday 6/2, 7:37 AM CT
Chris Chelios is not expected to play in Game 5 against Pittsburgh, according to the Detroit News. The 46-year old defenseman has not played in any of the first four games of the Finals and said, "By no means am I upset. Everybody wants to play. But everything we've done up to this point has been the right thing. Everybody knows I'm there for them. We talk about our depth. Hopefully, we won't need me, we can finish this off tonight."

Our View: Chelios was nursing a knee injury, and the team wants to keep their current lineup intact, as they hold a 3-1 lead in the series.
Alex Goligoski, D, Pittsburgh PenguinsMonday 6/2, 7:32 AM CT
Defenseman Alex Goligoski has been called up on an emergency basis for the Penguins, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: He was recalled from the AHL because Kris Letang left the team to attend the funeral of a close friend. Goligoski notched two assists over three brief games with Pittsburgh in 2007-08.
Tim Jackman, RW, New York IslandersMonday 6/2, 7:28 AM CT
The Islanders are close to signing restricted free agent Tim Jackman to a two-way contract, according to Newsday.

Our View: The forward only scored one goal and three assists over 36 games for the Islanders in 2007-08, and held no fantasy value.
Kyle Okposo, RW, New York IslandersMonday 6/2, 7:18 AM CT
Islanders' GM Garth Snow commented that Kyle Okposo is expected to play a major role next season, according to Newsday.

Our View: He is a top prospect, and flashed his potential over nine games in 2007-08, as he punched in two goals and three assists. He could make a solid fantasy impact next season.
Wade Dubielewicz, G, New York IslandersMonday 6/2, 7:13 AM CT
Wade Dubielewicz won't be back with the Islanders next season, according to Newsday. He is an unrestricted free agent, and the team reportedly plans to let him go. GM Garth Snow said, "We made a significant offer that he turned down. We wish him the best."

Our View: The backup goalie went 9-9-1 over 20 games (17 starts) in 2007-08, with a .919 save percentarge.
Bret Hedican, D, Carolina HurricanesMonday 6/2, 7:06 AM CT
Bret Hedican is not likely to be re-signed by the Hurricanes, according to the News Observer.

Our View: Hedican played in 66 games in 2007-08, and only contributed two goals and 15 assists.
Michael Leighton, G, Carolina HurricanesMonday 6/2, 7:01 AM CT
Michael Leighton is projected to serve as Cam Ward's backup next season, according to the News Observer.

Our View: Leighton enjoyed a strong season at Albany in the AHL, and John Grahame has left Carolina to play in Russia.
