Tim Worrell announced his retirement from major league baseball on Wednesday due to neck and shoulder injuries, according to the Sports Network. "Tim was a great Giant and played such a vital and versatile role in our bullpen over the years," senior vice president/general manager Brian Sabean said. "It didn't matter when you put Timmy in a game, he always pitched with great confidence. He was integral in our success, helping us to the World Series in 2002 and winning the NL West in 2003. Unfortunately, he ran into some injuries last year. We wish Tim and his family the best in their future endeavors." Worrell posted a 48-59 record with 71 saves and a 3.97 ERA over 678 career appearances.

Tim Worrell's arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday was more extensive than the team initially expected, according to the AP. Worrell had scar tissue in the labrum and an AC joint that needed work. He should still be ready by spring training.

The Giants hope to see Tim Worrell when they head to Arizona next week, according the Arizona Republic. Worrell, who is on the 60-day disabled list with a bulging disc in his back, lives in Phoenix. Manager Felipe Alou said that "unless (Worrell's) throwing," he doubts that the pitcher will return this season.
