Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 7/25, 8:30 PM CT
The Chicago White Sox have released veteran pitcher Esteban Loaiza after he completed his rehab assignment in Double-A, according to MLB.com. "He didn't get it done," said Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen.

Our View: Loaiza was 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA, and even if he does get picked up, he has no use on fantasy teams.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 7/17, 11:18 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza will start Thursday night for Double-A Birmingham in a rehab assignment, according to the Chicago Tribune. Loaiza is recovering from weakness in his right shoulder that is compromising his velocity.

Our View: Loaiza should continue to be ignored, as he will likely serve as nothing more than a long reliever when he returns to the Sox.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 7/4, 5:09 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza has been recalled from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte, according to the AP. The 36-year-old vet landed on the DL on June 13 due to right shoulder inflammation.

Our View: Loaiza isn't worth adding to your roster, as he will fight for innings as a middle-reliever, and allowed 16 earned runs over 27 innings of action this season.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 6/24, 9:55 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza has changed his throwing program as he tries to increase his velocity, according to the Chicago Tribune. He's on the DL with right shoulder inflammation.

Our View: Loaiza is unlikely to join the rotation at any point this season even if he does regain his velocity, rendering him pretty useless in fantasy.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 6/13, 3:32 PM CT
Rather than release him, the White Sox decided to place Esteban Loaiza on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation, according to the Sports Network. As expected, hurler Adam Russell has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his spot on the roster.

Our View: The move is retroactive to June 12. Loaiza needs some time to get back into shape and work on his fastball, but the club still thinks he can help them for the stretch run this season. Russell was 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings at Charlotte, and will work out of the bullpen.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 6/13, 10:15 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Esteban Loaiza is expected to be released by the White Sox today. Hurler Adam Russell is going to be called up from Triple-A Charlotte, and Loaiza is said to be cut to clear a roster spot.

Our View: Russell was 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA at Charlotte this season, and will likely be brought in to replace Loaiza in the bullpen. Loaiza only allowed one earned run over three outings for Chicago, but his velocity only reached the low 80's.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 6/13, 9:04 AM CT
The White Sox are disappointed to learn that Esteban Loaiza was not working out or throwing before they signed him to a free agent contract, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Pitching coach Don Cooper said, "We weren't expecting to see what we saw here in 2003 from him, but we need to see more than what he's showing. He's pitching fine because he really knows how to pitch, but we're hoping for more and we're trying to get more. We have a schedule laid out for him. We're trying to put him on a rehab assignment in the major leagues. The jury is still out, and we would like to see more out of his fastball."

Our View: His velocity hung between 78 and 82 mph during his outing on Wednesday. Loaiza has pitched in three games for Chicago, and allowed only one earned run, but all three have been mop-up situations.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 6/12, 9:08 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza will likely be released in order to create a spot on the roster for Adam Russel who has been recalled from Triple-A, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Russell figures to work in long relief while Loaiza will try, once again, to rekindle a sagging career.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 6/5, 8:52 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza is going to be used as a reliever as well as an emergency starter, according to the Daily Herald. Manager Ozzie Guillen said, "My concern was the bullpen, the way we were using it. We've got to protect our pitchers the best we can. Loaiza can do both. He's going to be the long man and an emergency starter. That's the way we're going to start with him."

Our View: The team also likes the option to use Nick Masset at the back of their bullpen on days when Scott Linebrink and Octavio Dotel may not be available. Loaiza could help Chicago, but will hold little to no fantasy value.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 6/4, 6:41 PM CT
The Chicago White Sox announced the addition of free-agent right-handed pitcher Esteban Loaiza to their bullpen on Wednesday, this according to the team website. The veteran signed a one-year contract through the 2008 season.

Our View: The team optioned right-handed pitcher Ehren Wassermann to Triple-A Charlotte. At this point Loaiza has no fantasy value. His switch from the NL to the AL doesn't favor his already huge 5.63 ERA.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 5/24, 1:05 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza was activated from the DL and then designated for assignment to make room for phenom Clayton Kershaw, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This basically ends Loaiza's association with the club, though they still will be responsible for the rest of his $6.5 million contract this year (minus the prorated minimum his new team will pay) as well as either a $375,000 buyout or a $7.5 million salary next year, a pretty hefty price to pay for two wins in a Dodgers uniform.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/21, 9:19 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza still felt tightness in his right shoulder during his rehab start with Class-A Inland Empire on Monday, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Trainer Stan Conte noted that Loaiza would likely make another rehab start before being activated from the DL.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 5/7, 7:02 PM CT
Dodgers RHP Esteban Loaiza will be place on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, according to LA Daily News.

Our View: The team reports Loaiza is experiencing tightness and spasms in his throwing shoulder, problems believed to be a primary cause for Loaiza's inability to maintain and hold a six-run lead in Colorado on Saturday. The move to the DL will be retroactive to Sunday and is believed to all but guarantee a spot in the starting rotation for Chan Ho Park, coming off three perfect innings of work today.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 4/26, 10:32 AM CT
Manager Joe Torre stated that Esteban Loaiza is going to start on Sunday, according to the LA Times. Torre also stated that Hong-Chih Kuo will be returning to the bullpen.

Our View: Loaiza holds a 1.02 WHIP over 16.2 innings, with eight strikeouts and only three walks this season. He is worth a look if you really need some depth to your roster right now.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 4/13, 9:48 AM CT
Dodger manager Joe Torre has decided to push RHP Esteban Loaiza out of the starting rotation and into the bullpen, giving Loaiza’s next scheduled start (Tuesday vs. Pittsburgh) to LHP Hong-Chih Kuo, according to the Los Angeles Times. Kuo hasn’t surrendered a single run in 6 2/3 innings of relief thus far and Torre appears excited to get a lefty into the mix. “It’s nice to have a lefty in the starting rotation,” said Torre. “What I saw from him the other day, he threw a lot of strikes. Looked very determined. [I’m] just curious to see if that’s going to work as a starter.”

Our View: That sounds like an experimental move that could bring Loaiza back to the starting lineup at some point, but the strike to Loaiza’s ego may be a bit concerning. The LA Times report indicates Loaiza was clearly disappointed and told reporters he had not been informed of the decision or given reason for the change.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 4/9, 10:39 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza surrendered four runs in only four innings of work against Arizona on Monday, but Joe Torre stated that he will remain the fifth starter in the rotation, according to the LA Daily News. He is off to an 0-2 start, with a 6.75 ERA, and although his job is safe for now, he could always get the hook if he doesn't start to perform better.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxFriday 3/28, 10:09 PM CT
As expected, Esteban Loaiza has been named the Dodgers' No. 5 starter, according to the LA Times. Loaiza will keep the spot warm for Jason Schmidt, who is coming back from shoulder surgery. It could be a while before Schmidt is ready, and until then Loaiza is a decent NL-only play.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 3/9, 8:52 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza is making a case for the Dodgers No. 5 slot in the Los Angeles rotation. The 36-year old veteran outpitching Daisuke Matsuzaka working three innings, allowing two hits and two walks in a victory over the Red Sox. He struck out four of his 13 batters, including David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 2/14, 1:36 PM CT
The Los Angeles Daily News reports that "Assuming no one gets hurt before Opening Day..."Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, newly signed Japanese import Horoki Kuroda and Chad Billingsley are in the starting rotation, as is Jason Schmidt if he completes his rehabilitation from major shoulder surgery in June." If Schmidt can't get his inning count up before April's Opening Day, however, veteran Esteban Loaiza will be the team's fifth starter when needed.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 9/11, 11:56 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza was hammered in his second start for the Dodgers, allowing six runs and 10 baserunners over 3 1/3 innings Tuesday. Loaiza didn't show much in his first LA start, either, albeit he lucked into a win as the Dodgers piled up 11 runs that day. Even in deep leagues, it's best to steer clear of this retread.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxMonday 9/3, 10:21 PM CT
Newly-acquired starter Esteban Loaiza earned a win in his first start with the Dodgers Monday, allowing three runs and nine hits in seven innings of work.

Our View: Loiaza is in line for another start this week Saturday at San Francisco
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 8/29, 1:01 PM CT
The Dodgers have claimed Esteban Loaiza off waivers from the A's, according to the AP. The team will assume the $1.08 million Loaiza is owed for the rest of this season, as well as his $7 million salary for 2008. "At this time of the year, we're looking for any way to improve the team and Esteban is a talented veteran who we hope can contribute down the stretch and next season," GM Ned Colletti said. "He has a history of winning games and right now that's what's most important to our team." Loaiza has been sharp since returning from the DL, holding a 1.84 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in two starts. It's unclear when he'll make his first start for the Dodgers.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 8/22, 10:26 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza, who was activated from the DL today to start against the Blue Jays, will not be on a pitch count, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Loaiza threw more than 100 pitches twice while on his rehab assignment. It would be wise not to expect much fantasy value from Loaiza the rest of the way.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSunday 8/19, 4:57 AM CT
The A's will activate Esteban Loaiza to start Wednesday at Toronto, the AP reports. He's missed the entire season thus far, coming off knee surgery and a few other physical issues. Loaiza pitched in his final rehab outing Saturday at Triple-A Sacramento, going six innings and more than 100 pitches. We'll need to see a positive outing or two with the Athletics before we stake anything on him.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 8/16, 10:57 AM CT

Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxThursday 8/2, 9:13 PM CT
Esteban Loaiza worked his third rehab game on Wednesday, but he's not quite ready to come off the disabled list. Loaiza allowed three hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento. "He did OK," Manager Bob Geren told the AP. "He still has to build up his velocity and his pitch count." He'll make at least one more rehab start on Monday before returning from his neck and knee injuries.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxWednesday 8/1, 9:45 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza, recovering from neck and knee injuries, will make a rehab start for Triple-A tonight, and his next step after that is uncertain, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He could rejoin the A's to start against Texas on Monday, or the team may decide to let him make another rehab start. "I want to pitch on Monday at Texas, but I was told there were other plans," Loaiza said. "First, they told me to hurry up, then they told me to take it slowly. It's supposed to be the way I feel, but I guess now they have a program for me."

Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxTuesday 5/29, 11:19 AM CT
Esteban Loaiza was initially planning to avoid surgery on his troublesome right knee, but he's now decided to go ahead and get the surgery over with. "If I have surgery I'll be out four to six weeks, and have half the season left," Loaiza said in the Mercury News. "I want to get it over and done with. My body feels fine except for my right knee." Loaiza was originally on the disabled list with back spasms and a bulged disc in his neck.
Esteban Loaiza, P, Chicago White SoxSaturday 5/19, 7:50 AM CT
An MRI revealed that Esteban Loaiza has a tear in the meniscus of his right knee. However, it appears that he's had the injury for a while and simply aggravated it, according to the Contra Costa Times. As a result, Loaiza plans to keep pitching through the knee injury, while working his way back from a bulging disc in his neck. With dual injuries, it's unlikely that we'll see him back in game action until at least sometime in June.
