Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 11/12, 3:48 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt is likely to retire this offseason.

Our View: Schmidt currently has no plans to pitch next year, even though he filed for free agency on Wednesday, and it's not likely that his services would garner many interested parties. The once dominant starter went just 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts last season, and was severely limited once again by his practically bionic shoulder that has seen multiple surgeries. It was a solid career, but Schmidt likely should have hung up the spikes seasons ago.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/27, 12:52 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Our View: The move was made to clear room for new addition Vicente Padilla on the 40-man roster. The move effectively ends Schmidt's career as a Dodger and likely his career altogether. In three seasons with LA he won just three games and had two shoulder operations.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 8/7, 10:49 PM CT
Jason Schmidt has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a setback with his balky right shoulder, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Schmidt's three-year tenure in Los Angeles, for which he has been paid $47 million, has just been an incomprehensible disaster. The former power righty has made only ten starts starts during that time (four this year), and seen his stuff reduced to almost nothing this season. Hopefully he realizes it's time to call it quits and go out with a little grace while he still can.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/6, 12:12 AM CT
After a one-game reprieve, the Jason Schmidt experiment went back to being a disaster for the Dodgers on Wednesday. The soft-tossing righty allowed five runs in just 3.2 innings while walking three batters. L.A. lost 4-1 to the Brewers at home.

Our View: Nothing like having one of the worst starters in the majors come out to make a statement the night after your team is involved in one of the most controversial incidents of the season. The team probably would have had Schmidt throw at Prince Fielder, if only getting hit by an 81 MPH fastball hurt. Regardless, this madness can't continue much longer, and the team needs to find a viable fifth starter, and fast, if they want to be taken seriously down the stretch.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 7/31, 9:39 PM CT
Jason Schmidt only issued one hit over six scoreless inning in Friday's 5-0 win at Atlanta. He had five walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: He pitched well, but his performance was spoiled by the five free passes. With that said, he could be a viable starter for NL-only leagues if he can work on his control.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 7/29, 6:32 PM CT
In somewhat of an upset, Jason Schmidt has been named as the Dodgers starter for this Friday, according to MLBlogs.

Our View: It's somewhat of an upset because Schmidt has absolutely nothing left. His fastball topped out in the low '80s on Sunday with very little movement, and the Marlins batters appeared as if they were taking batting practice. Don't expect this awful experiment to go on much longer, as any team with serious title aspirations won't make it there with Schmidt in their rotation.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 7/26, 6:51 PM CT
Jason Schmidt had an embarrassing start on Sunday, allowing five runs in three innings, while seeing his fastball top out in the low eighties. The Dodgers lost 8-6 to the Marlins at home.

Our View: The Jason Schmidt experiment has not gone well for the first place Dodgers, and isn't likely to go on much longer if he pitches at all like he did on Sunday.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/20, 4:43 PM CT
Jason Schmidt has been activated from the 60-day DL following his recovery from shoulder surgery, according to TSN.

Our View: Schmidt will make his first start since 2007 tonight against the Reds at Dodger Stadium. He is worth consideration as a flier, but should not be penciled into lineups in his first game back.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 7/18, 7:48 PM CT
Jason Schmidt is slated to start Monday's game against the Reds, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Schmidt has been plagued by injuries, and will be making his first appearance in the majors since 2007. He is too risky to consider for fantasy duty in his first game back, but is certainly worth a look as a flier if you need pitching help.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/2, 2:40 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, Jason Schmidt earned the second win of his Triple-A rehab assignment on Wednesday. The former ace allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings.

Our View: Schmidt's line doesn't seem that great, but he did strike out five, did not walk a batter and threw 60 of his 85 pitches for strikes. The Dodgers are looking for pitching help down the stretch and Schmidt just may be the answer.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/27, 10:28 AM CT
The LA Times reports that injury plagued starter Jason Schmidt threw 7.2 scoreless innings in a Triple-A rehab start.

Our View: Schmidt threw 104 pitches and allowed just five hits and a walk while striking out seven. This was easily the most encouraging sign in the hurlers path back to the majors.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 5/18, 11:04 AM CT
Jason Schmidt allowed five hits with six strikeouts and three walks over seven innings during his rehab start with Single-A Inland Empire Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. He has been recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Our View: His pitch location was better, but his velocity was down. Schmidt has not pitched in the majors since 2007, and is only worth holding in deeper NL-only leagues. He could be back in mid-June.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 4/25, 12:15 PM CT
Jason Schmidt is set to being a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "We still want to wait and see how he comes out," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "He threw a bullpen (in extended spring training on Thursday)."

Our View: Schmidt will toss pitches for the Single-A Inland Empire squad on his 30-day rehab stint. While the club continues to be hopeful that Schmidt will be able to provide positive returns, we are highly skeptical of a hurler who hasn't started a major league game since 2007.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 4/8, 8:19 PM CT
After Jason Schmidt's performance on Wednesday his next scheduled start has been pushed back, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: Schmidt is pitching in extended spring training in an attempt to come back from shoulder surgery. If he makes it all the way back to the big club don't expect him until May or June. And there's no telling whether he'll be effective when he gets there as he's been struggling mightily with his velocity.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 4/8, 7:14 PM CT
The Los Angeles Times reports that Jason Schmidt threw 89 pitches in an extended spring training game. He has pitched on four days' rest four consecutive times as he battles back from a shoulder injury.

Our View: Schmidt should be able to join the Triple-A squad soon as the next step in his rehab. The Dodgers could use his presence, if healthy, in their starting lineup. However, fantasy owners should hold off until he proves he can still be effective.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/30, 2:43 PM CT
Manager Joe Torre noted that Jason Schmidt (shoulder) will start the season on the disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Schmidt is not going to hold the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation, and does not garner fantasy attention in anything but deeper NL-only leagues.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 3/29, 11:24 PM CT
Jason Schmidt allowed three runs on three hits in three and one-third innings Sunday against the Padres.

Our View: This was Schmidt's first loss of the spring, and it came with mixed results. His four strikeouts indicated his velocity was up, but his three walks raised some red flags.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 3/24, 10:38 PM CT
Pitcher Jason Schmidt tossed 45 pitches in a minor league outing against the Brewers on Tuesday. He allowed six hits and two runs, walked one, and struck out three. Schmidt's fastball reached 88 mph, MLB.com reports. "It felt pretty good -- the best I've felt as long as I can remember," he says. "I didn't have command all the way through. That's going to come. But I didn't have fatigue as before.

Our View: Schmidt is headed in the right direction, but we've seemingly been down this path before. We need to see a lot more before we can believe that he offers anything to fantasy owners. Schmidt won't be ready for the start of the season and probably shouldn't be drafted in any format or league size.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/16, 7:31 PM CT
Jason Schmidt allowed no runs, one hit, and two walks in Monday's 10-8 loss to Oakland. He struck out two in the outing,

Our View: Earlier in the day, manager Joe Torre said Schmidt was out of the running for the opening day rotation. Schmidt needed some extra time off prior to taking to the mound today. He seems a good bet to join the rotation at some point this season, but consider him too risky to draft at this point.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/16, 5:31 PM CT
The Daily News reports that manager Joe Torre said that Jason Schmidt is out of the running for the fifth spot in the rotation prior to his spring start on Monday.

Our View: Schmidt was dismissed simply because he needed some extra time off between starts. He will likely make a few starts for the Dodgers at some point this season, but April may be too soon to expect him to do so.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/9, 8:40 PM CT
Jason Schmidt had a rough start for the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. He did fan a couple.

Our View: Schmidt now has an ERA of 13.50 for the spring and is pretty risky for fantasy purposes going into this season.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 3/8, 1:52 PM CT
Jason Schmidt, who is recovering from a shoulder ailment, is slated to start Monday's game against the Rangers, according to the LA Daily News. He will pitch one inning.

Our View: Schmidt will remain a risky fantasy option due to his poor track record with durability, and he should be left for the deepest of NL-only leagues.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 2/24, 8:27 AM CT
The Dodgers' Jason Schmidt said his shoulder felt good after his throwing session, according to the L.A. Times.

Our View: Schmidt should still be avoided in fantasy drafts due to his penchant for getting injured. He signed a $47 million contract before the 2007 season, and has given L.A. all of six starts and a 6.31 ERA for their investment.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 2/23, 2:51 PM CT
Jason Schmidt reportedly looked great during today's intrasquad game, according to the LA Daily News. Schmidt fired 11 pitches, nine for strikes, and put down three (Juan Pierre, Mark Loretta, Matt Kemp) of the four batters he faced.

Our View: This is encouraging news as Schmidt competes for the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation. He could be worth a look as a flier for NL-only leagues.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 2/14, 7:49 PM CT
Jason Schmidt has his sights set on the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation heading into 2009, according to the club's official site. After multiple surgeries, he's expected to be 100 percent this season.

Our View: Schmidt has only started six games in the past two years after signing a three-year, $47 million deal two winters ago. The Dodgers certainly won't get their money's worth for the net worth of the contract, but if he's back to being the pitcher they signed, they could get it this year.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 11/30, 10:43 PM CT
Scout.com reports that Jason Schmidt has a good chance of being ready to start spring training alongside the Dodger's healthy pitchers. Schmidt is currently playing catch at 75 feet near his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, and he is expected to step up to long-toss in December and throwing off a mound in January.

Our View: Schmidt has appeared in only six games for the Dodgers since signing a three-year, $47 million contract two winters ago. We would be impressed if he is 100 percent in the spring.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 9/8, 9:16 PM CT
Jason Schmidt will have shoulder surgery Wednesday to clean up scar tissue that was preventing him from getting over the top enough in his delivery and also to repair "arthritic changes in the AC joint," according to Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: Two years of his three year deal worth over $45 million are complete and Schmidt has thrown all of 25.2 innings. It is unclear if Schmidt will ever be able to return to his former dominance.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 9/1, 8:58 PM CT
Jason Schmidt's 2008 season will end without him throwing a single pitch in the big leagues as the team has decided to shut him down after he has been unable to return to form from a shoulder operation, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The team is unclear just how to proceed with Schmidt and he might still need additional surgery on his ailing shoulder. Two years of his three year deal worth over $45 million are complete and Schmidt has thrown all of 25.2 innings.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 8/20, 11:10 PM CT
Jason Schmidt threw a bullpen session Wednesday and is looking to start a rehab assignment in Triple-A sometime next week, according to Dodgers.com.

Our View: Schmidt has not pitched in the major leagues yet this season, and it is still possible that he won't. Either way, fantasy owners should not rush to add him to their rosters.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/14, 8:56 AM CT
Jason Schmidt is not giving up hope to pitch in the majors again this season, according to the LA Times. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery. He threw off a mound Sunday and Tuesday, and is scheduled to do so again Friday.

Our View: Schmidt may be hopeful, but the team does not expect him back, and noted that he is running out of time to make a rehab assignment in the minors.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/7, 1:55 PM CT
Joe Torre stated before Thursday's game against the Cardinals that Jason Schmidt likely won't return this season, according to the LA Daily News. Torre said, "Yes, for this year. At this juncture, a lot would have to happen in a hurry for him to be able to pitch for us at this level. He would have to start throwing bullpens (now), and then his rehab probably would take him through the second week of September at this point. I think it would be a long shot."

Our View: The team has a lot invested financially in Schmidt, but only received one win out of him in 2008.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 8/6, 8:51 AM CT
Jason Schmidt, who is recovering from right shoulder surgery, will throw a pen session late this week in what could be a last-ditch effort to pitch in the majors with the Dodgers this season, according to the LA Times.

Our View: Schmidt still has hopes of returning this season, but should not be on any fantasy rosters at this point.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 7/19, 11:27 AM CT
The LA Times reports that Jason Schmidt's scheduled start with Las Vegas on Friday was canceled, as the $47-million right-hander felt discomfort in his throwing shoulder after his last outing. Schmidt will throw a couple of bullpen sessions before resuming his rehab assignment.

Our View: Owners shouldn't be counting on Schmidt anytime soon.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/14, 1:59 PM CT
Jason Schmidt struggled in his rehab outing with Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, as he allowed four earned runs on five hits over a mere two innings, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: He could hold decent value in larger NL-only leagues in the second half of the season, but his return to the rotation remains in question, especially following Sunday's poor showing.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/10, 10:13 AM CT
Jason Schmidt gave up two earned runs while throwing 59 pitches for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Our View: Schmidt is on his way back to the bigs after recovering from shoulder surgery, but depending on him for fantasy purposes is not wise. Whether he can return to his previous form remains to be seen.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 6/25, 8:22 PM CT
Jason Schmidt finally received some good news on Wednesday as he did not feel any discomfort after throwing a bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Schmidt will now resume his minor league rehab assignment on Saturday at Las Vegas. Schmidt will likely use the entire 30 days at his disposal to build up strength in his shoulder before he is promoted to the big league club.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/21, 4:33 PM CT
Jason Schmidt had a bullpen session Saturday that could lead to resumption of his minor league rehab outing, according to MLB.com. The righty halted his rehab last week after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder.

Our View: Schmitty is still unlikely to return before the break. We'll continue to monitor his progress.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 6/13, 7:01 PM CT
Jason Schmidt has apparently suffered a setback in his rehab from right shoulder surgery, this according to the team website. Manager Joe Torre said Schmidt's Minor League rehabilitation assignment will not be resumed next week as previously announced, and that trainer Stan Conte told him the club will continue to go slow with Schmidt. The report noted that the right-hander is experiencing discomfort in his surgically repaired shoulder.

Our View: Schmidt's career likely won't be anything near what it was in San Francisco. The 35-year old underwent career-threatening shoulder surgery 51 weeks ago and his rehab hasn't progressed as the Dodgers, or Schmidt's fantasy owners had hoped.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/7, 4:33 PM CT
Contrary to earlier reports, Jason Schmidt will not make his scheduled minor league start on Sunday due to "discomfort" in his shoulder, according to MLB.com. "It's not a setback, it's just a set aside," manager Torre said. "At this point, we're not ready to start the clock on him. I think we're more cautious on starting the clock because we know once we start it, you have a 30-day window. We're going to just hold off maybe for a few days, maybe a week, but depending on him."

Our View: Schdmit had only 10 days left on the 30 day clock when he suddenly developed a phantom calf injury. He was then placed on the minor league DL which meant he would have another 30 days to pitch in the minors once activated. With this latest setback, the 30-day clock will be on hold until he hits the mound again.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/7, 12:10 PM CT
Jason Schmidt threw a 50-pitch bullpen session on Thursday, and is scheduled for a rehab start on Sunday with Triple-A Las Vegas, according to the LA Times. He is trying to bounce back from right shoulder surgery.

Our View: He has dealt with a few setbacks in his recovery, but a solid outing could potentially put him back on target to return to the Dodgers by the All-Star break.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 6/2, 8:59 PM CT
Jason Schmidt has reset his 30-day minor league rehab clock by coming down with a left calf injury, the Los Angeles Daily News reports. The veteran is coming back from a right shoulder surgery.

Our View: The Daily News basically says the Dodgers made up this injury in order to keep Schmidt in the minors. The team was due to face a tough decision on June 10, but Schmidt now presumably has a few more weeks to gain strength in his shoulder.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/31, 3:40 PM CT
The Los Angeles Dodgers report that as RHP Jason Schmidt nears return to the mound, the team may consider holding more pitchers than normal to insure he is eased into his role with caution, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Essentially, the Dodgers are considering naming co-fifth starters in the rotation, allowing rookie Clayton Kershaw to share that spot with Schmidt. This is becoming much more common as managers seek to rest arms and insure hampered pitching commodities are not pressed into extensive service and resulting damage. Schmidt still faces at least one or two more rehab starts before he rejoins the club, but the time to start planning that move is now.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 5/29, 7:40 PM CT
According to manager Joe Torre, Jason Schmidt will make his fourth minor league start on Friday on a normal five day cycle, the first time he will be asked to do that since resuming his comeback, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Schmidt has until June 10th on his rehab assignment before the team has to make a decision on whether or not to activate him. Even when activated, Schmidt may not be inserted into the starting rotation immediately.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 5/27, 6:18 PM CT
Jason Schmidt threw 45 pitches over 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with High-A Inland Empire, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out three. "He was good. He came out of it fine," manager Joe Torre said. "Next time he'll probably go to 60. I don't think they've set the exact date but there will be and there was nothing to keep him from still going forward." Torre said Schmidt, who is coming back from shoulder surgery, was throwing in the low 90s and using all his pitches.

Our View: Sounds good so far. We'll let you know how Schmitty progresses. He is still a long ways away from the Dodgers rotation.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/24, 7:29 PM CT
Jason Schmidt, (shoulder) who left the team to attend to family matters in Phoenix, reportedly threw a bullpen session while in Arizona.

Our View: The right-hander is expected to make a rehab start Monday for San Bernardino of the California League as he works his way back from right shoulder surgery.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/18, 9:19 AM CT
Dodgers RHP Jason Schmidt made the second start of his rehab assignment for Class A Inland Empire on Saturday and the team reports worries with his lack of velocity, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: Schmidt, attempting to return from right should surgery, faced nine batters, striking out three and walking one. However, the team reports he failed to get a single pitch above 90 mph during the outing, but Schmidt was happy with the results. "The velocity is something the media focuses on," said Schmidt. "I'm just trying to get the ball over home plate. I was pitching to contact and hoping the ball didn't go over the fence." We shouldn't be expect progress in leaps and bounds for Schmidt at this point, and that lack of velocity is not surprising in the least. It has been a long road to recovery for Schmidt and the Dodgers have given every indication they have no desire to push him to change the cautious approach.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 5/14, 8:24 PM CT
The Dodgers report RHP Jason Schmidt completed today's bullpen session and is scheduled to make his second minor league rehab appearance on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Schmidt threw 38 pitches today, 11 months after undergoing shoulder surgery, and manager Joe Torre reports he will make the start for Class A Inland Empire on Saturday with plans to throw three innings or a pitch count between 30 to 45 pitches.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/11, 9:16 AM CT
Jason Schmidt will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Sunday. He will throw one inning for High-A Inland Empire, the Los Angeles Times confirms. Schmidt is recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Our View: We imagine the Dodgers will use the full 30 days to evaluate Schmidt. Fantasy owners can expect a return in early-to-mid June.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 5/7, 4:16 PM CT
Jason Schmidt (shoulder) threw on Wednesday, a day later than anticipated, but reports are that it went well, according to MLB.com. Schmidt threw 36 pitches in front of trainers and the teams GM, and no setbacks were reported.

Our View: Schmidt is scheduled to throw on Sunday, either in the form of minor league game or a simulated game at Dodger Stadium, but with all the stops and starts he has faced during his comeback, we would like to see him throw in a game before rendering an opinion on what to expect. Regardless, he will likely take the full 30 days allowed during his rehab assignment putting his return at no early than around mid-June.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 5/6, 8:45 PM CT
Dodger RHP Jason Schmidt did not throw his scheduled game simulation today, according to the LA Daily News.

Our View: Schmidt has yet to recover from lingering soreness resulting from his last simulated game, thus the team has yet to schedule his next step in rehab and will wait to see how his arm feels tomorrow.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 5/2, 11:52 AM CT
Jason Schmidt will throw a bullpen session Friday and could go on a rehab assignment by the weekend, according to the Press-Enterprise. Schmidt is working his way back from shoulder surgery.

Our View: Schmidt will be a huge fantasy risk when he does return to the mound, but it's certainly worth keeping track of how he does on his rehab.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 4/29, 10:57 PM CT
Jason Schmidt, recovering from shoulder surgery, threw 78 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday. He may start a rehab assignment this week, according to the AP.

Our View: Schmidt is progressing, but don't expect to see him until at least June, and it's anyone's guess as to how successful he'll be.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 4/26, 10:23 AM CT
Jason Schmidt threw 40 pitches to hitters off the Dodger Stadium mound on Friday, and also threw another 30 pitches in the bullpen, moving him closer to a minor league rehab assignment, according to the LA Times. He is recovering from right shoulder surgery, and Dodgers' trainer Stan Conte said, "What we set out to do was accomplished. We'll see how he feels tomorrow. And then we'll set up the new schedule. It's been a long road, so I kind of take this hour by hour." Manager Joe Torre added, "He did everything he was supposed to do, but we're not making any long-range plans. We'll see how he comes through. He really hasn't had any problems. This was a pretty good test here today."

Our View: With continued progress, the 35-year old righty could find himself back in the Dodgers' rotation sometime in June.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 4/21, 5:47 PM CT
Jason Schmidt had a 50-pitch outing in the bullpen on Monday and is scheduled to have one other such outing while the Dodgers complete their homestand, this according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Our View: If all goes well Schmidt will likely begin a month long rehab assignment that would put him back in the Dodgers rotation sometime in early June.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 4/7, 1:11 AM CT
Jason Schmidt's arm might be as strong as it was at any point this spring, this according to the LA Times. Pitching coach Rich Honeycutt noted in the report that Schmidt threw 52 pitches in the bullpen on Saturday and is progressing well in his rehab. His return to active duty has yet to be determined.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 4/2, 10:19 AM CT
Jason Schmidt is expected to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to InsideLocal.com. He is expected to throw a bullpen session, but still isn't going to be back for several weeks, as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 3/30, 4:46 PM CT
Jason Schmidt is headed to the 15-day DL, according to MLB.com. Schmidt had major shoulder surgery last June, and said he's been progressing steadily since an early Spring setback. He sporadically throws off a mound, but is months away from pitching competitively.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 2/29, 2:37 PM CT
Jason Schmidt is going to take a break from throwing to rest his surgically repaired shoulder, according to the AP. "It’s just fatigued, a little achy, nothing serious," he said. "You hope it doesn’t happen to you, but you know it’s going to happen to everybody." He hasn't thrown since Tuesday and is not certain when he will resume. Hopefully, this is just part of the healing process, but it's still a bit concerning.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 2/27, 8:47 AM CT
Jason Schmidt sounded giddy about the condition of his arm a couple weeks ago. He's probably more subdued now, though, after his arm felt tired during his side session Tuesday. However, manager Joe Torre insists that it's no big deal, given that Schmidt resumed pitching only in November, according to the LA Times. The manager said Schmidt isn't feeling any pain but "doesn't have the life he had in his arm earlier." Does this news pretty much cancel out any positive vibes we may have had regarding Schmidt, who's coming back from shoulder surgery? Not quite, but it's certainly not good. We'll continue to keep you posted on his progress.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 2/16, 2:38 PM CT
Jason Schmidt made his first bullpen outing on Saturday and came out smiling. "Knock on wood, I hate to even say anything. I was pain-free," he tells the AP. "I'm feeling free and easy. Stamina up, arm strength, too. (But) we're not out of the woods." Schmidt underwent surgery on June 20 to repair a torn labrum, frayed biceps tendon, and inflamed bursa in his right shoulder. He says he used all of his pitches during the 30-pitch outing.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 2/14, 3:21 PM CT
Jason Schmidt told the LA Times that he's made a breakthrough over the last two weeks in his rehab. The righty said he woke up one day to discover that the stiffness and nagging soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder were suddenly gone. The balls he threw later that day had more carry, so much so that the first one he released sailed over the head of his catching partner. "I don't want to read too much into it," Schmidt said. Schmidt's status for opening day remains uncertain, though manager Joe Torre has said he isn't counting on the right-hander being ready by opening day.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 2/14, 1:32 PM CT
According to the Los Angeles Daily News, "this much is clear: Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, newly signed Japanese import Horoki Kuroda and Chad Billingsley are in the starting rotation, as is Jason Schmidt if he completes his rehabilitation from major shoulder surgery in June." However, if Schmidt isn't capable of starting the season in the rotation, Esteban Loaiza will take the fifth spot.
Jason Schmidt, P, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 1/16, 5:34 PM CT
Jason Schmidt is making good progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery. "If he continues to progress, there's a great chance he'll be ready to go (when next season begins)," GM Ned Colletti said to the AP. "We've had nothing to discourage us. He's been throwing for a while now. He'll continue to build his arm strength. Everything's where it's supposed to be right now after what he's gone through." Trainer Stan Conte said Schmidt has been throwing on flat ground several times a week for a while now, and he began throwing off a mound last week. Since starting to throw off a mound, Schmidt has thrown some 10-15 pitches per session, and without much velocity. "Where he is right now is a great place," Conte said. "There have not been any setbacks at this point. He's thrown off the mound, starting last week. We like where he is right now."

"If it's not [ready by spring training], I can't see it much longer than that." Trainer Stan Conte is happy with Schmidt's recovery process. "If at the time of the surgery we said where we'd like him to be, this is where he'd be," Conte said.

The Dodgers are optimistic about Jason Schmidt making a full recovery from shoulder surgery, according to the LA Times. "I think the odds are with him as opposed to against him," said Stan Conte, the Dodgers' director of medical services. "Labral repairs have a good history of coming back and coming back as good as they were before, because the surgery restores the anatomy," Conte said. "If something is torn, once you get it back to the way it was it should function the same way." Schmidt who underwent surgery on Wednesday, is hoping to be ready by spring training next year.

"We knew he hadn't been throwing well," general manager Ned Colletti said. "It's been a concern for a few starts. Obviously it's a disappointment. We'll just have to figure out how to make it better." Chad Billingsley will start in Schmidt's place at Toronto on Thursday.

Jason Schmidt's velocity Sunday in his second start back from an inflamed shoulder was sitting in the mid 80s, down from the 88-92 MPH he was throwing in his first start back. "Is it a red flag? No," Dodgers' director of medical services Stan Conte said in the LA Times. "But it is a yellow flag." Schmidt pitched six shutout innings in his first start back, but Sunday he gave up six runs in four innings. The fluctuating velocity could simply be the right-hander regaining arm strength, but you have to be concerned that his shoulder still isn't right. Schmidt reported no discomfort Sunday or Monday and said he is expected to make his next start.

"I have no clue," he said. "I've only played catch. At 30 feet. So who knows? I could do that left-handed. But as far as progress, it's nice to get out there and be doing something different [rather] than just sitting around."

Jason Schmidt played catch Friday for the first time since going on the disabled list 17 days ago with bursitis in his shoulder, according to the LA Times. He was able to throw 40 times from about 50 feet. "It's not anything to get too excited over," trainer Stan Conte said. "It's not insignificant by any stretch of the imagination. We're moving up each day and we're progressing each day. [But] how fast he will progress after this it's hard to tell. At any point it can really take off. Or it can back up."

If they do, Mark Hendrickson would likely get the call out of the bullpen.
