Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 9/9, 5:40 PM CT
Jon Lieber has been battling a foot ailment all season and today the Cubs placed the pitcher on the 60-day DL, according to Sportsnetwork.com.

Our View: The Cubs were not sure if Lieber would be out all year but with this move, he will not be back with the Cubs this year.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsMonday 9/8, 10:09 AM CT
Jon Lieber has been shut down after being unable to shake some of the lingering aches and minor ailments that have hindered him since early in the season, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: He left the team over the weekend and went home to Mobile, Alabama. It is unclear if Lieber will return this season, namely if the Cubs make the playoffs.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSunday 8/31, 6:57 PM CT
Jon Lieber will come off the DL when the major league rosters expand on Monday, the AP reports. He has been out since July 10 due to a strained right foot.

Our View: Lieber will likely return to the bullpen, where he has had a successful year. He won't have any fantasy value in that role, though.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSaturday 8/2, 11:12 AM CT
Cubs pitcher Jon Lieber has been throwing and will begin a minor league rehab assignment soon, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Lieber had a role in the Cubs bullpen, and threw well, with a 3.43 ERA and just five walks in 44.2 innings. His fantasy value is very small, however.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsMonday 7/21, 9:34 PM CT
Jon Lieber will throw three innings at the Cubs spring training complex on Tuesday, MLB.com reports. He is on the DL due to a strained right foot.

Our View: It's a good sign that Lieber is taking the mound so quickly after going on the DL. He still has a bit of value in NL-only leagues.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsFriday 7/18, 4:54 PM CT
Jon Lieber has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right foot strain, according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Lieber has been effective as a middle reliever, and he also has one start on the year. However, unless you play in an extremely deep NL-only league, he is unlikely to affect fantasy play.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSunday 5/11, 1:50 PM CT
As a result of Sunday's bad weather, Jon Lieber could have his Tuesday start skipped, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View: Lou Piniella sure is treating the veteran well this year, huh? Lieber did not pitch well in his only start thus far, and such a move would allow Jon more time to stretch out his arm.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsWednesday 5/7, 3:24 PM CT
Jon Lieber became only the second pitcher in Chicago Cubs history to give up four home runs in an inning. The veteran right-hander did this in Wednesday afternoon's 9-0 loss to the Reds.

Our View: The unsuccessful outing will likely find Lieber back in the bullpen with Rich Hill returning from Triple-A or fellow lefty Sean Marshall getting a shot at the No. 5 role.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSaturday 5/3, 4:20 PM CT
Rich Hill has been optioned to the minors, and Jon Lieber is going to fill his spot in the rotation, according to MLB.com. Lieber will make his first start on Wednesday versus the Reds.

Our View: Lieber has pitched well over 19.1 innings this season, as he holds a 1.86 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, with only two walks. He is worth a look if you need help at the position, namely if you are stuck with Hill.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsThursday 4/10, 9:04 PM CT
Jon Lieber earned the decision by pitching 4.1 scoreless relief innings after starter Rich Hill needed 72 pitches to get through three. Lieber pitched 7 1/3 scoreless relief innings in the series.

Heading towards the team's March 31st home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, the rotation looks like this: 1) Carlos Zambrano 2) Ted Lilly 3) Ryan Dempster 4) Rich Hill 5) Jon Lieber. The odd man out appears to be Jason Marquis, who tussled with Piniella this spring about working out of the bullpen. The right-hander told the Chicago Tribune he'd rather be traded than go to the bullpen, prompting an angry response from manager Lou Piniella. "Well, if that's the case, he can go somewhere else," Piniella said. "Win a spot in the rotation, you don't have to worry about it. ... I've got seven starters here for five spots. It's a little bit too early to start talking about what he wants to do or not do." At this point Marquis has no fantasy value and will either accept his bullpen role, or the Cubs will attempt to auction off his services. Lieber, however, has some deep NL-only value and could contribute to the wins category if he can hold down the starting slot in the rotation.

Jon Lieber went to 2-0 for the spring as he only allowed one run on seven hits over five innings against the Giants, with four strikeouts and one walk. His ERA went down to 1.80 as he continues to fight for a spot in the Cubs' rotation.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsMonday 3/3, 10:51 PM CT
Jon Lieber worked the first two innings of Monday's win over the Mariners offering up two runs on three hits in the second inning. Lieber is fighting for a starting slot in the Cubs rotation. There is plenty of spring to impress his new team.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 2/26, 8:46 AM CT
With Ryan Dempster considered a front-runner to land one of two open rotation spots, Jon Lieber and Jason Marquis are the main candidates vying for the final spot in the Cubs top five, according to the Chicago Tribune. Will Lieber go to the bullpen if he loses out on a starting job? He scoffed at the idea last year in Philly, but he said when he signed with the Cubs last month that he'd do anything the team asks of him. Obviously his fantasy value would plummet if he was used as a reliever.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsWednesday 1/16, 10:58 AM CT
The Cubs have signed Jon Lieber to a one-year, $3.5 million deal. Lieber will compete for the last spot in the rotation, with Ryan Dempster and Sean Marshall representing his main competition. He held a 4.73 ERA in 14 games (12 starts) last year with the Phillies in the first half but missed the second half after suffering a ruptured tendon in his right foot.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 7/3, 5:25 PM CT
Jon Lieber will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his right foot. The Phillies were hoping Lieber could rehab the injury and possibly come back at some point this year, but that's obviously not going to happen, according to the SportsTicker.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsFriday 6/29, 11:26 PM CT
Jon Lieber had an MRI exam on his right foot on Friday, according to the AP. A decision on whether he will have season-ending surgery or rehab without surgery will be made next week. He has a ruptured tendon in the bottom of his right foot.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/26, 9:55 AM CT
The Phillies received word on Monday that Jon Lieber likely won't return this season. Lieber has ruptured tendon in the bottom of his right foot. He could undergo surgery or try and rehab the tear. Surgery would end his campaign, and rehab would require at least two months, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Lieber will seek a second opinion.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSunday 6/24, 8:16 AM CT
Jon Lieber will get a second opinion on his injured right foot tomorrow. He was diagnosed with a ruptured tendon Saturday, an injury that presumably would end his season, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. More will be known about his status following the second examination, but it sounds like he's out for quite a while, regardless.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSaturday 6/23, 8:38 PM CT
Jon Lieber is out indefinitely with a ruptured tendon in his right foot, according to the Associated Press. He suffered the injury during a start on Wednesday. It was originally thought Lieber suffered an ankle injury; however, that is clearly not the case. Expect to see the Phillies call up J.A. Happ to fill Lieber’s spot in the rotation. But nothing is official yet.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsThursday 6/21, 5:12 AM CT
Jon Lieber left his start Wednesday in the sixth inning because of a strained right ankle, the AP reports. He's hoping to not have to miss a turn because of the injury. "I twisted it more than anything," Lieber said after the game.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsThursday 5/10, 9:54 AM CT
The Phillies shuffled their rotation for the coming weekend, moving Jon Lieber from Friday to Sunday. Lieber has a cut on one of the fingers on his right hand, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Cole Hamels will move up to Friday, and Freddy Garcia will work on Saturday.

Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsThursday 4/5, 4:26 AM CT
Jon Lieber threw 42 pitches over three innings in an extended spring training game Wednesday, the Phillies official site reports. He's coming back from a strained abdominal muscle. Lieber will pitch again on Friday, and if things progress well, he could join the team on or around Monday for the Mets series.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsMonday 4/2, 9:29 AM CT
Jon Lieber threw well Saturday in a bullpen session, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Lieber, who's dealing with a strained abdominal injury, will pitch Tuesday in a simulated game. When Lieber is ready to come off the disabled list he'll be in the Phillies bullpen, unless Freddy Garcia has an additional setback.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsSunday 3/25, 1:11 AM CT
The Phillies have lost Jon Lieber indefinitely with a strained abdominal muscle, according to the AP. Lieber strained his right oblique muscle on Friday and has begun treatment, the team said. There is no immediate timetable for his return.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsThursday 3/22, 1:52 PM CT
The Phillies are not planning on switching Jon Lieber back to the rotation despite the recent injury to Freddy Garcia, according to MLB.com. Off days early in the season might allow the Phillies to go with four starters if Garcia isn't quite ready.
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsWednesday 3/21, 7:42 PM CT
Jon Lieber will begin the year in the bullpen, the Phillies officially announced Wednesday. "I'm disappointed," Lieber told the AP. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't. I think I can still start."
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsTuesday 3/20, 10:06 AM CT
GM Pat Gillick said it's unlikely he'll be able to trade one of his starters before the beginning of the year, meaning either Jon Lieber or Adam Eaton will have to begin the year in the bullpen, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Phillies could feel more committed to Eaton since they just signed him to be a starter, so Lieber might be the more likely option to make the move. Lieber has said he would be open to a move to the bullpen. "I guess I've got no choice, so . . . I don't know," he said yesterday. "We'll wait until that situation arises. Who knows?"
Jon Lieber, P, Chicago CubsFriday 7/28, 9:01 AM CT
The Yankees have expressed interest in Jon Lieber, and they had a scout present for his most recent start on Wednesday night in Philadelphia, according to Newsday. The Phillies are interested in trading the veteran to get out from under his contract. Lieber, who pitched for the Yanks in 2004, is 4-7 with a 5.52 ERA this season.
