Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/17, 3:04 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain finally looked good in a spring appearance against the Phillies on Wednesday, striking out three in three innings of relief while giving up one run off two hits and one walk.

Our View: Joba's solid outing cut his spring ERA down to a still awful 16.20. Performances like today's are encouraging, though he'd still seem to be behind Phil Hughes, and possibly even Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre, in the race for the No. 5 spot in the Yankees starting rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 3/12, 7:53 PM CT
There is currently no front-runner in the race for the No. 5 spot in the Yankees' rotation, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes are the top candidates, the latter of which has performed better so far in spring training. It appears that Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre remain in the hunt as well. They are all being evaluated on more than just their stats.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/10, 3:45 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain got rocked yet again on Wednesday, giving up six runs off five hits (including a grand slam to Gerald Laird) and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Tigers.

Our View: Joba has now allowed 11 runs over 3.1 innings in his two appearances thus far, giving up eight hits and six walks. Normally we wouldn't dwell too much on performances in spring training, but in Chamberlain's case, he has a whole lot to prove if he wants to receive any consideration for the fifth and final spot in New York's rotation. Phil Hughes has looked pretty sharp in his two appearances thus far, not to mention that fellow candidates Alfredo Aceves and Sergio Mitre have both been superb in their two appearances.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 3/5, 5:35 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up five runs in just 1.1 innings of action in today's loss to the Rays.

Our View: Perhaps Chamberlain is still being bothered by the flu. Either way, he obviously did not gain any ground in the race to win the No. 5 spot in New York's rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/3, 7:10 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain fared well during his pen session Wednesday, according to The Journal News.

Our View: Chamberlain did not throw yesterday while down with the flu. He may pitch in Friday's exhibition game, and will be observed closely while competing for the fifth spot in New York's rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 2/19, 8:31 AM CT
Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland recently hinted that the team plans to use Joba Chamberlain as a reliever in 2010, according to the NY Daily News. "I think we've all seen the difference in him when he starts and relieves," Eiland said.

Our View: Chamberlain struggled as a starter last season but has been outstanding over the past three seasons whenever he's come out of the bullpen. The Yankees already have four spots in their starting rotation accounted for and a number of candidates for the No. 5 spot (Phil Hughes leads the way, with Alfredo Aceves, Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin expected to contend as well), so it certainly wouldn't leave their rotation thin if they did in fact use Joba in relief.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 1/31, 8:10 AM CT
After being shuttled back-and-forth between the rotation and bullpen last season, Joba Chamberlain is expected to be the Yankees' fifth starter in 2010, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The team has told him to prepare as such this spring training. While he was anything but dominant as a starter last year, he should not go undrafted in any format.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 12/27, 8:14 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will most likely compete for the Yankees' fifth rotation spot next spring, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: The "loser" will be shipped to the bullpen, or maybe even Triple-A for more seasoning.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 10/11, 12:51 PM CT
The New York Post is reporting that Yankees' pitcher Joba Chamberlain could spend part of the 2010 season in the minors. The coaching staff feels Chamberlain got too comfortable this season, and they want him to know that he has to produce to keep his spot.

Our View: Many in the organization wanted Joba sent down this season, but the team needed him in the regular season rotation. His inconsistency frustrated everyone in New York this season, and the team will take any precaution necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 10/8, 3:24 PM CT
Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that the Yankees will use Joba Chamberlain out of the bullpen if they make it to the ALCS. Chad Gaudin will likely be the team's Game 4 starter if the team advances.

Our View: It sounds like the Yanks are committed to using Joba only out of the bullpen in this postseason, but they haven't made a definitive decision yet. If he is successful out of the pen in the first round, expect him to stay there throughout the remainder of the postseason.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 10/3, 8:00 PM CT
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Joba Chamberlain may pitch out of the bullpen in Sunday's game as a postseason tryout.

Our View: Joba appears to be headed for relief duty in the postseason, assuming the Yanks put him on the roster. He makes a nice insurance policy of one of the top four starters struggle or get hurt, and could be a key factor in the Ynakees playing deep into October.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 9/30, 10:07 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Royals at Yankee Stadium. He had four walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain has not pitched at least four innings in five of his last seven starts, as the Yankees limit his innings. He ended tonight with a no-decision.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/25, 10:15 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 9-5 win over the rival Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain had a decent performance while collecting his ninth win of 2009. This also marked his longest outing since August 11, when he worked six innings against Toronto.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 9/20, 7:17 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain got torched for seven runs in just three innings of work on Sunday as the Yankees fell to the Mariners by a score of 7-1. Chamberlain allowed six hits while walking three and striking out two.

Our View: This was Joba's worst start since the team started limiting his innings, and you have to wonder where he goes from here. The team may be better off placing him in the bullpen if they aren't going to let him go all out as a starter, as he has struggled to get comfortable on the hill recently.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/14, 9:43 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed one earned run on four hits over four innings in Monday's 5-3 win over the Angels at Yankee Stadium. He had no walks with two strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain pitched well, but his fantasy value continues to take a hit while working limited innings per start.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/14, 9:57 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is scheduled to start Monday night in the Yankees' make-up game against the Angels, according to the New York Post. Manager Joe Girardi said that Joba is expected to work more than the three innings he has gone in each of his last three starts.

Our View: The Joba Rules have been killing fantasy owners, but it looks like the Yanks may be letting him loose a bit. Don't expect a complete game or anything tonight, but it would be nice if he could pitch five effective innings. Going against the Angels, however, will make that task awfully difficult.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 9/9, 9:23 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed two earned runs on three hits over three innings in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk with three strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain only pitched three innings in each of his last three starts, and his fantasy stock continues to take a hit while skipper Joe Girardi limits him.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/4, 9:46 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits over a mere three innings in Friday's 6-0 loss at Toronto. He had two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: It is uncertain if Chamberlain only pitched three innings because he was struggling, or if skipper Joe Girardi had him on a set pitch limit for tonight. He is winless over his last five starts.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/30, 3:18 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain pitched only three innings on Sunday in the Yankees' 8-3 win over the White Sox. Joba allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one and not walking a batter.

Our View: The Joba rules were in full effect today, and he was on a leash of 35 pitches apparently, because that's how many he threw. The new rules have been pretty vague, but if he is only going to last three or four innings every time out his fantasy stock will take a major hit.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/28, 5:37 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, the Yankees are allowing Joba Chamberlain to pitch every five days for the rest of the season.

Our View: So much for the "Joba Rules". The Yankees have a rough schedule in September and will need all five starters to keep everyone fresh and march towards October. This should give Joba's fantasy status a boost since he'll be getting regular starts. Hopefully the future one aren't like the seven-run meltdown he experienced last time out.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/25, 10:28 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was gunned down for seven earned runs on nine hits over a mere four innings of work in Tuesday's 10-9 loss to the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View: Joba took the loss, and has allowed four or more earned runs in each of his last four starts. He is struggling this month after holding a solid 3-0 mark and 2.73 ERA over five starts in July.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/16, 9:07 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks over just five innings Sunday and was handed his third loss of the season as the Yankees fell to the Mariners 10-3.

Our View: Joba has now allowed four runs in every start in August. He has also walked 12 over his last 16 innings, which has to be a contributing factor for the spike in his ERA.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/14, 7:16 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain is slated to make his next start Sunday against Seattle, and will not be pitching on seven days of rest as was being considered, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Chamberlain was going to pitch Wednesday against the A's with Chad Gaudin taking the hill Sunday against the Mariners. This is encouraging, but the Yankees may still try to limit Chamberlain's innings down the stretch to prevent him from wearing down.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 8/12, 1:54 PM CT
According to ESPN.com, Yankees' starter Joba Chamberlain will make his next start on seven days' rest. The Yankees are going to space out the rest of Chamberlain's starts this season to protect his arm.

Our View: Well, the Joba rules are still in effect, but the team is just going about it a different way. Instead of moving him to the bullpen, they are going to give him a bunch of extra days off. Fantasy owners will have to monitor when he is scheduled to pitch for the rest of the season, because it won'y be every fifth day like everyone else.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/11, 9:29 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up four earned runs on five hits over six innings in Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Jays at Yankee Stadium. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Toronto was leading 4-3 when he exited, so Chamberlain takes a no-decision rather than a win. He had a four-game winning streak heading into tonight's game, and shall remain active in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Yankees' rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/7, 9:11 AM CT
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that the Yankees need to find a way to keep Joba Chamberlain in the rotation for the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Chamberlain is said to be on an innings limit of 160, and he has pitched 105 so far.

Our View: Although he wasn't great last night in his five inning, seven walk performance, he has turned himself into one of the better pitchers in the Yankees' rotation this season. It seems almost inconceivable that the team would take him out of the rotation if he keeps performing well, but we will have to wait and see.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 8/6, 10:09 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain struggled with his control on Thursday, but the Yankees' offense bailed him out as he picked up the win in the 13-6 pounding of the Red Sox. Chamberlain went five innings and allowed four runs on six hits while walking seven and striking out five.

Our View: So much for the control issues of Joba being a thing of the past. He barely made it through five to become eligible for the win, and Joba owners should be a little concerned that his control issues are back. It is just one start, but he took a big step back tonight.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/2, 7:56 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain's scheduled Tuesday start will be pushed back two days to Thursday so that he can start the Yankees' series opener against the Red Sox next week, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: This move made sense with a day off on Monday, as the Yankees can afford to pitch Andy Pettitte and Sergio Mitre on normal rest against Toronto on Tuesday and Wednesday and ensure they have the best possible rotation set up for their four-game series against Boston. Chamberlain owners can't be happy, as it strips him of his two-start week, though he remains a must-play given how dominant he's looked his past three outings.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 7/29, 9:05 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain only allowed three hits over eight scoreless innings in Wednesday's 6-2 win at Tampa Bay. He had two walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain improves to 7-2 and trimmed his ERA to 3.58. He has won in three straight starts, allowing one or less earned runs in each outing over the span.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 7/24, 9:18 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was in control from the mound in Friday's 8-3 win over the A's at Yankee Stadium, as he only issued one earned run on two hits over seven innings. He had three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: The rising star has only allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts, and earned his sixth win of the season tonight.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 7/24, 1:48 PM CT
The New York Daily News is reporting that the Yankees still plan to limit the innings pitched by starter Joba Chamberlain this season. The number is believed to be at or near 160 innings, and Joba is currently at 95.2 in 18 starts this season.

Our View: The Yankees will not divulge what their plans are for Joba in the second half, but they have said they plan on keeping the innings limit in tact. The most likely scenario would be to skip a few of his starts moving forward, but there is also a chance the team will move him back to the bullpen as the season wears on. Fantasy owners should keep tabs on Joba as the season wears on.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 7/19, 5:15 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was masterful on Sunday in the Yankees' 2-1 win over the Tigers. Chamberlain went 6.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight. He is now 5-2 on the year.

Our View: Just when you think it might be time to give up on Joba, he comes out and pitches like he did today. He has been struggling terribly over his last few starts, but he showed today that when he puts it together he still has the ability to be a top fantasy pitcher. Hopefully he turns a corner after this start, but don't be shocked if he stays inconsistent all season.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 7/11, 8:31 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain was ineffective again on Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) in just 4.2 innings of work. The Yankees lost 10-6 in Anaheim.

Our View: Joba barely even merits an own right now. His WHIP has risen to Daniel Cabrera-like levels at 1.56, and he has now given up at least three runs in five straight starts. You shouldn't drop him yet, but you should no longer consider him untouchable.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 7/5, 4:08 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up eight runs (three earned) on nine hits over a mere 3.2 innings of work in Sunday's 10-8 win over the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and one strikeout.

Our View: Chamberlain struggled today, and is lucky he was dealt a no-decision rather than a loss. He has allowed three or more earned runs in five of his last eight starts, and only earned two wins over the span.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 6/30, 10:32 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain issued three earned runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Mariners at Yankee Stadium. He had three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain failed to impress, and ends the night with a no-decision. He only has two wins over his last nine starts.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 6/24, 9:48 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6.1 innings in Wednesday's 8-4 win at Atlanta. He had no walks and fired five strikeouts.

Our View: It was not a great outing for Joba, but the Yankees provided enough run support for him to snap a three-game skid without earning a win. All four of his season wins came on the road.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 6/18, 8:37 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain gave up three earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Thursday's 3-0 loss to the Nationals at Yankee Stadium. He issued four walks with six strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain is now winless over his last three starts, and allowed nine walks over his last two outings. He has been erratic this season, but the future star should remain active in fantasy leagues.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 6/13, 7:35 AM CT
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Yankees' starter Joba Chamberlain did not use his fastball enough in his start against the Mets on Friday. "I was ahead of hitters and instead of just finishing them with fastballs, I went to my off-speed stuff a little too much," Chamberlain told reporters.

Our View: Joba had good stuff on Friday, he just didn't throw it in the strike zone. He only allowed one hit to the Mets, but he managed to walk five and only last four innings despite giving up only one run. Joba needs to trust his fastball, which is his best pitch, and bury hitters when he gets ahead. He is still young, so in time he should get it figured out.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 6/12, 10:05 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed two earned runs on one hit over four innings in Friday's 9-8 win over the Mets at Yankee Stadium. He issued five walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain struggled with control tonight, evidenced by his five walks. He still hasn't taken a loss over his last seven outings.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 6/7, 3:42 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Rays at Yankee Stadium. He had one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: The Yankees were trailing 3-1 when he exited the game, so he took a no-decision. He has not been dealt a loss over his last six starts.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 6/2, 11:22 AM CT
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Joba Chamberlain and manager Joe Girardi are both denying a report that Chamberlain cannot be used in the bullpen due to a shoulder injury. "That's not the reason we haven't put him in the bullpen," Girardi said. "The reason we haven't put him in the bullpen is because we envision him as a starter."

Our View: The original story claims that Joba can't pitch out of the bullpen because his shoulder does not allow him to warm up fast enough. Hard to say if there is something to that report, but Joba's shoulder looked just fine in his eight inning win on Monday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 6/1, 9:40 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain enjoyed a solid outing as he only allowed two earned runs on four hits over eight innings in Monday's 5-2 win at Cleveland. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain is off to a nice start in June as he ended a four-game skid without picking up a win. He looks to be in better rhythm after recently being bothered by a bruised right knee.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/27, 9:43 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain's velocity is down to 92.5 mph this season, but Yankees' skipper Joe Girardi is not concerned, according to the Star-Ledger. Girardi said, "If it lasts another start or two, yeah, that would concern me. One start, I am not going to make to big of a deal about it."

Our View: Chamberlain allowed three runs and four walks over a mere four innings of work in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to Texas. His fastball clocked mostly in the 91 mph-range. He blamed his mechanics, which were compromised by a bruised right knee. Hopefully Chamberlain will get into a better rhythm in his next outing.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/27, 12:43 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain was not great in the Yankees' 7-3 loss on Tuesday. Chamberlain only lasted four innings, and he gave up three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out five.

Our View: Joba may have been affected by the long rain delay, but he only lasted four innings. He is never a guy who goes deep into games, but fantasy owners need more out of him than four innings. He still struck out five, but the four walks are a constant problem.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 5/25, 9:43 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is dealing with a bruised right knee, but was able to throw a bullpen session without any issues Sunday, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Chamberlain looks to be fine to make his next scheduled start Tuesday at Texas. He should be kept active in fantasy lineups as of now.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 5/22, 11:20 AM CT
Updating a previous report, the New York Daily News is reporting that Joba Chamberlain has been diagnosed with a bruised right knee after being hit by an Adam Jones line drive in the first inning of Thursday's game. Chamberlain is expected to make his next start.

Our View: Joba owners, you can now rest easy. Joba said he is 100 percent sure he will make his next start, and it appears as if this injury is very minor. Keep him active and start him next time out.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 5/21, 7:29 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Joba Chamberlain was hit in the knee with a line drive during the first inning of Thursday's start.

Our View: Joba pitched to two batters after being hit, but then was pulled. The severity of the injury is unknown. We'll update his status when details are released.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 5/16, 4:41 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was impressive in his start on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Yankees beat the Twins 6-4 in eleven innings. Chamberlain went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking four and striking out six.

Our View: Joba was much better in the first inning today, a problem that has plagued him all year. Fantasy owners will take a start like this every time out by Joba, but we will have to see if he can start being consistent. He is still a strong play in all leagues.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/10, 10:54 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is questionable for his start on Sunday after popping a blood vessel during batting practice, according to ESPN. He is still expected to start.

Our View: This is kind of a weird situation, but it appears as if he will be good to go. Keep him in your rotation today, but there is still a chance he could be scratced.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 5/5, 9:57 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain got past a rough first inning to make a pretty solid start on Tuesday. Chamberlain took the loss, but he was lights out after giving up a fur run first. He went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out 12.

Our View: After the first, Joba was dominant. 12 of his 17 recorded outs were by strikeout, a highly impressive number. He showed flashes tonight of the pitcher many thought he would be by now. If he can lose the one bad inning in his starts, he could be very, very good.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 5/4, 5:25 PM CT
The AP reports that Joba Chamberlain's mother has been arrested in Nebraska for reportedly selling meth to an undercover police officer.

Our View: We have to think that this story will get plenty of press in New York, but A-Rod's comeback may deflect some attention. Either way, this development has to way heavy on the young pitcher's mind. Hopefully it will not disrupt his focus when he takes the mound every fifth day.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 4/29, 9:14 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed just three hits, three walks, and a run scored while picking up his first win of the season in New York's 8-6 win over Detroit. He struck out six in seven innings of work.

Our View: There is plenty of speculation that the Yankees may move Chamberlain back to the bullpen if Chien-Ming Wang and Phil Hughes prove worthy of rotation spots. The Yankees greatly prefer to develop him as a starter and performances like tonight's show why.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/24, 11:18 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain received a no decision as the Yankees fell to the Red Sox in extra innings 5-4. Joba went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain wasn't great tonight, but he wasn't terrible either. He got in some trouble, but he worked out for the most part. He gave his team a chance to win, but they couldn't close it out.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/17, 3:46 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain received a no decision in the Yankees' 6-5 win over Cleveland on Friday. Chamberlain lasted only 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits in that span. He also walked five batters and struck out four.

Our View: Rough day for Joba, as he couldn't make it out of the fifth inning. He threw 93 pitches, and only 46 were strikes. That is not good command. Still, it was only one start and he threw very well in his first outing, so nothing to worry about.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 4/12, 5:20 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain made his first start of the season as the Yankees fell to the Royals 6-4 on Sunday. He struck out five over six innings while allowing four hits, a walk, and three runs, only one of which was earned.

Our View: A lot of eyes are focused on Joba to determine whether or not he should remain in the rotation or take over duties as the setup man for Mariano Rivera. He had a decent outing today while tossing 56 of 88 pitches for strikes, although the bullpen blew another win. Last season, 30 of his 42 appearances came out of the bullpen.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 4/1, 10:33 AM CT
FoxSports.com reports that Joba Chamberlain pleaded guilty to drinking and driving on Wednesday and he has been given probation. He was cited for the incident on October 18 of last year.

Our View: The probabtion will have no effect on his availability for the season. Chamberlain is coming off his most impressive spring outing on Tuesday when he threw 86 pitches and topped out at 96 mph.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 4/1, 8:12 AM CT
The New York Daily News reports that Joba Chamberlain's velocity was as high as 96 mph in Tuesday's start. It was also as low as 90 during his 86-pitch outing.

Our View: Chamberlain is having a solid spring, and he is set to be the Yankees' fifth starter. He is an unlikely candidate to ever last longer than seven innings in a game, but he should still bost an excellent K/9 rate while producing solid fantasy numbers in every other category as well. As usual, the concern with Chamberlain will be his durability, and that is anyone's guess.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 3/31, 4:23 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain tossed 5.1 innings Tuesday and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks, but struck out six. He was credited with the win and is now 4-0 on the spring.

Our View: Free from a DUI court date, Joba showed off his stuff Tuesday. He is slated to be the Yanks' fourth starter this season and flashes a fantastic K-rate and a solid ERA, but beware of him wearing down as he's never pitched a full season in the majors.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 3/31, 11:53 AM CT
Pitcher Joba Chamberlain's arraignment on a drunken driving charge has been rescheduled, again, MLB.com confirms. He was pulled over in Lincoln, Nebraska on October 18, and the arraignment was previously delayed in December, January, and earlier this month. The latest date was set for Tuesday, but Chamberlain's lawyer requested a move to Wednesday.

Our View: Why doesn't the "I'm a major league pitcher" defense work this well when we try it? If the lawyer can simply push this back a couple more weeks, the season will begin, and the court may have to delay proceedings until November.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 3/26, 3:18 PM CT
The Yankees knocked off the Phillies 10-2 on Thursday, and Joba Chamberlain got the start, going 4.1 innings, and allowing just three hits, but two of them were home runs. He also walked three and struck out three.

Our View: Not an outstanding performance from Chamberlain, who allowed bombs to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. Still, he won't be the last to give up back-to-back shots to those two this year. He has increased his workload, as he went from 3.1 innings pitched on Saturday to 4.1 Thursday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 3/21, 5:20 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw 3.1 innings in his start Saturday, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out five.

Our View: This is the second good start in a row for Joba. If he continues this trend he will find himself joining the Yankees' rotation. Likely in the fifth spot. Expect the Ks to pile up.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 3/16, 5:36 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw three shutout innings against the Phillies on Monday. It was his best outing of the spring as he allowed just two hits and a walk, while striking out three.

Our View: Chamberlain is trying to lock down the fifth spot in the Yankees rotation. If he can avoid injuries, which is far from guaranteed, he could be a nice fantasy addition thanks to his high strikeout rate.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 3/12, 7:17 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain has inked a one-year deal with the Yankees worth $432,575, according to the NY Post.

Our View: He has failed to impress so far in spring training, but should still hold the fifth spot in the Yankees' rotation. He has potential to emerge as another ace for the staff this season, and should be a solid source for wins and strikeouts.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 3/10, 11:25 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain displayed limited effectiveness in a win over the Reds Tuesday night. He allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work and fanned three batters.

Our View: If nothing else, today's start by Chamberlain helped quell concerns that had arose after two less-than-stellar performances to kick off the spring. At his point, however, it seems as if the Yankees are sticking with the former reliever as their fifth starter no matter what.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 2/11, 3:05 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain has gotten an early start on his work, and has already thrown five bullpen sessions in Florida, according to Yankees.com.

Our View: Chamberlain has a goal of making it through the season injury-free. Injuries have been a problem with him throughout his career.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 2/9, 2:52 PM CT
GM Brian Cashman confirmed that Joba Chamberlain will be the fifth starter in the Yankees' rotation this season, according to the Journal News.

Our View: Pitching at the back of the rotation will give the Yankees the option to skip his turn to control his innings. He has potential to emerge as an "ace" this season, as long as his shoulder issues don't return.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 2/6, 7:20 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw a bullpen session in Florida on Friday, according to MLB.com. He threw 31 pitches in all which included fastballs and changeups.

Our View: Chamberlain is expected to be in the Yankees' rotation this year to begin the season. He pitched out of the bullpen to begin 2008, but he had success in 12 starts for New York, going 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 1/26, 1:48 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's arraignment on his DUI charge is being delayed, according to ESPN.

He said, "I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation. I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season."

Our View: Lancaster County Attorney Gary Lacey will get paperwork on the case Monday and decide what, if any, charges will be filed. Chamberlain’s blood-alcohol content is yet to be disclosed.

Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 10/17, 10:31 AM CT
The New York Post reports that Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner said one of the first off-season decisions was that Joba Chamberlain will be used as a starter next year.

Our View: Steinbrenner said that before last year, but Chamberlain opened in the bullpen, was converted to a starter for 12 games, suffered a shoulder problem and finished the season in the bullpen with a tight right shoulder. Strengthening the rotation is the Yankees' top priority and many believe Chamberlain possesses ace-like stuff. The right-hander was 4-3 with a 2.60 ERA in 42 games (12 starts). In 1001/3 innings he fanned 118 and walked 39. He was 3-1 as a starter. The Yankees are expected to go hard after free-agent pitchers CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and may show interest in Derek Lowe and Jake Peavy, who reportedly has been placed on the trading block by the Padres.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 10/1, 6:35 PM CT
Newsday reports that Brian Cashman expects Joba Chamberlain to be in the starting rotation for 2009.

Our View: Joba started 12 games this season with mixed results and he rarely went deep into games. With an offseason to prepare for the role, expect Joba to be more effective in 2009.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 9/30, 10:05 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain experienced right shoulder soreness Sunday for the second time in the last two months, according to the NY Post.

Our View: Chamberlain is personally not too concerned about the soreness. Chamberlain is open to whatever the Yankees want him to do next year. That will depend on the state of their rotation. There is speculation they will make a great offer for CC Sabathia, and may be willing to target A.J. Burnett if Sabathia turns them down. Derek Lowe is also said to be an option.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 9/19, 9:48 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain got his 17th hold of the season on Friday in the Yankees 3-2 victory over the Orioles. He struck out three consecutive batters in the appearance.

Our View: Back in the bullpen, Chamberlain has pitched similarly to last season. He started 12 games in 2008 and came in to relieve 26 others.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 9/15, 6:39 PM CT
The question at the beginning of the year was what to do with Joba Chamberlain. Should the Yankees start him right away, or bring him along slowly? Well, the plan seemed to be working with taking it slow. Chamberlain was successful out of the pen and also when he was in the starting rotation, but a late season injury has brought the question back to the front-burner. Catcher Jorge Posado, said that he thinks Chamberlain should stay in the bullpen, according to Yankees.com.

Our View: Now that everybody has an opinion on this matter, Chamberlain has chimed in. "I'm so tired of it." Joba was 4-3 this year and in 94 innings he struck out 108 hitters.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 9/2, 6:30 PM CT
New York Newsday reports that General manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Joba Chamberlain will not start next season in the Yankees' rotation.

Our View: According toe Cashman, Chamberlain hasn't thrown enough innings this season, so it could mean another midseason starting point for everyone's favorite prospect.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 9/2, 9:49 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain has been activated from the DL following his bout with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to the NY Post.

Our View: He will return to the rotation in 2009, but will serve as a setup man to closer Mariano Rivera for the remainder of this season. The team may also consider shutting him down as soon as they are mathematically eliminated from the playoff race.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/31, 9:55 AM CT
It is likely that Joba Chamberlain will be activated from the DL on Monday, and should return as a reliever, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Chamberlain has fantasy value in any role, but it would of course be higher as a starter. Still, he can pile up the strikeouts in a setup role, and could get some holds for leagues that use that as a scoring criteria.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 8/30, 9:49 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain's long-awaited return is expected to come in the next week, and reports indicate he will likely be coming back as a relief pitcher, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: The righthander, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since August 6th with rotator cuff tendinitis, will face hitters Saturday and throw approximately 35 pitches. If he feels no lingering effects Sunday, he should be cleared to be activated.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 8/28, 1:37 PM CT
The road back from injury for Joba Chamberlain took another step Thursday morning. Chamberlain threw a 45-pitch bullpen session and his arm-strength continues to improve after each and every step. According to Yankees.com Chamberlain will throw 35-pitches to hitters on Saturday and if that goes well he could see game action next week.

Our View: It is still not known what Chamberlain's role will be when he comes back, whether it would be as a starter or out of the bullpen.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/26, 7:01 PM CT
Yankee reliever-turning-starter Joba Chamberlain threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Monday in an empty Yankee Stadium under the supervision of pitching coach Dave Eiland, according to MLB.com. He is scheduled to ramp up to 45 pitches on Thursday, and said he has started throwing harder just to see how his arm responds. "It felt better than last time as far as strength-wise," Chamberlain said of Monday's session. "Playing catch, you let a couple go, [and] I let a couple go in the bullpen."

Our View: Chamberlain has been on the disabled list since leaving an August 4th start at Texas with what the Yankees announced was right rotator cuff tendinitis. He has worked on a program with head trainer Gene Monahan, and tossed his full complement of pitches. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the organization had options of where they could send Chamberlain. Both the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Double-A Trenton Thunder have qualified for postseason play, and could provide game situations for Chamberlain to work toward a big league return.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 8/23, 5:58 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw 35 pitches today from a mound. They were all fastballs and changeups, according to Newsday. "It was good, I warmed up quick, I got loose real quick," said Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Manager Joe Girardi didn't comment on when Joba would pitch in a game, but the right-hander estimated that it would be at least a week. It's still not clear whether Chamberlain will come back as a starter or reliever.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/22, 2:10 PM CT
As expected, Joba Chamberlain increased his throwing program to 20 throws on flat ground from 60 feet to a squatting catcher, according to the NY Post. He is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis and said, "I let a couple go and it felt good."

Our View: He will throw 35 pitches off a mound tomorrow but will be limited to fastballs and change-ups. Manager Joe Girardi does not have a plan for him beyond Saturday, but does not expect him back in New York until early September. At that point, it may be as a reliever.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 8/21, 7:30 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain played catch from 60 feet Thursday and is scheduled to throw off a mound on Saturday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: "It's just different being on a mound rather than just playing catch," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain is hoping to come off the disabled list early next month.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/19, 9:44 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain played catch on Tuesday, just as he did on Friday, Saturday and Monday. He will take the day off on Wednesday and play catch again on Thursday, the AP reports. Chamberlain is scheduled for a bullpen session on Saturday. He is on the DL due to rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: The Yankees will likely wait and see how that bullpen session goes before deciding the next move. Fantasy owners will need to be patient with the young ace.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/17, 10:30 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, played catch for a second straight day Saturday, while making 28 throws, and said he felt better than he did after throwing for the first time Friday, according to the NY Daily News. He said, "I got loose a lot quicker. It went a lot better than I expected, getting loose and staying loose." He is scheduled to take Sunday off.

Our View: Manager Joe Girardi previously stated that Chamberlain will likely remain in the rotation when he returns, rather than move back to the pen, and the young hurler is making positive steps in that direction in his rehab. He could be back in pinstripes in late August.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 8/16, 8:34 AM CT
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said New York hurler Joba Chamberlain will likely remain a starting pitcher when he comes off the disabled list, according to the New York Daily News. "We envision him as a big league starter," Girardi said.

Our View: There had been speculation that Chamberlain would move to the bullpen, but that probably will not be the case.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/15, 6:59 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain threw 25 times from 65 feet Friday, the first time he's played catch since he exited an Aug. 4 start with rotator cuff tendinitis, according to MLB.com. "It was very good," Chamberlain said. "I got loose at the end. After eight days, when you get out there and throw, you're still kind of leery. But everything went well." Joba is scheduled to play catch again on Saturday and hopes to throw off a mound as early next week.

Our View: The Yankees have discussed the possibility of bringing back Chamberlain as a reliever to reduce the stress on his shoulder. We'll let you know how his rehab progresses.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/15, 1:10 PM CT
The NY Post indicates that Joba Chamberlain may be moved back to the bullpen when he returns from the DL following his recovery from rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Moving him back to the pen would reduce the stress on the right shoulder. He is eligible to return from the DL Wednesday, but there is no confirmation that he will be ready at that time.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/11, 8:15 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, it now seems that Joba Chamberlain will indeed begin his throwing program on Friday and not Wednesday, according to MLB.com. "I made the suggestion that he just wait until Friday when we get home, so he's in front of us," manager Joe Girardi said.

Our View: This decision only pushes things back two days and seems to make the most sense as the club doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize their golden armed hurler.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/11, 3:04 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Wednesday (moved up from Friday), according to the AP. He said, "Play catch and just go from there."

Our View: Barring a setback, he could re-join the Yankees by the end of August, but the Yankees will remain cautious with his recovery.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/11, 10:02 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain, who is recovering from rotator cuff tendinitis, will begin a throwing program Friday at Yankee Stadium, according to the NY Post. He hasn't thrown since last Monday night in Texas.

Our View: Barring a setback, he could be back by the end of August, but the Yankees will remain cautious with his recovery.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/8, 4:13 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain (shoulder) plans to begin throwing next week and hopes to return to the Yankees rotation by the end of the month, according to the Star Tribune. "I'll probably throw the beginning of next week," Chamberlain said. "Everything feels fine now."

Our View: Joba was very confident in his pronouncement that he would be pitching before September 1st. We'll take him at his word for now, but you know the Yankees will be extremely careful with the young flame-thrower.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 8/6, 6:10 PM CT
As expected, the Yankees placed Joba Chamberlain on the DL Wednesday, according to the AP. Chamberlain had his shoulder examined today by Dr. James Andrews today, who diagnosed the righty with rotator cuff tendinitis.

Our View: Joba will rest for a week and then begin a throwing program.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 8/6, 12:48 PM CT
The NY Post suggests that Joba Chamberlain will be placed on the 15-day DL due to his right shoulder ailment.

Our View: The Yankees have recalled Chris Britton from Triple-A, and since he was sent down less than 10 days ago, the Yankees have to place a pitcher on the DL, which is expected to be Chamberlain, who is in Alabama right now being examined by Dr. James Andrews.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/5, 6:42 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain will be examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, the AP reports. The pitcher is dealing with a sore right shoulder, and he underwent an MRI on Tuesday. "He'll take his test results with him (to Alabama)," manager Joe Girardi says. "Until I hear from Dr. Andrews, that's all I've got... I envision him not making his next start. Beyond that, I can't say."

Our View: Yankees fans and fantasy owners are going to be on the edges of their seats for the next day or two. A trip to visit with Dr. Andrews doesn't necessarily mean something is seriously wrong, but it would suggest the Yankees are a bit unclear and worried about the results.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/4, 10:31 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Yankees.com says that New York pitcher Joba Chamberlain is suffering from a stiff right shoulder.

Our View: It is not known whether or not Chamberlain will have to go on the DL or not. When word comes, we will pass it along to you.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/4, 9:13 PM CT
Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain had to leave the game against the Texas Rangers in the middle of the fifth inning with an apparent injury to his right shoulder, according to the AP.

Our View: There is no word on exactly what the malady is, but we will keep you updated when word comes.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 7/30, 3:31 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was in command in Wednesday's 13-3 win over Baltimore at Yankee Stadium, as he only issued one earned run on five hits over six innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Chamberlain is in the zone right now, as he only allowed two earned runs over his last three outings (19 innings).
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 7/25, 9:51 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain hurled a dominant seven innings and got the 1-0 win over the Red Sox. He allowed just three hits and struck out nine while walking one.

Our View: Chamberlain lowered his ERA to 2.30, while throwing 102 pitches.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 7/19, 3:28 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain struck out eight batters in six innings against the A's on Saturday. He allowed one earned run but did not factor in the decision.

Our View: Chamberlain continues to be a strikeout machine but he has not gotten much run support in his first nine starts.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 7/11, 8:48 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain lost for the first time in eight starts on Friday. He lasted 6.2 innings and struck out nine. However, he gave up seven hits and three runs to a Blue Jays lineup without Alex Rios or Vernon Wells.

Our View: Although he lost, it was not a bad start for the converted reliever. The nine Ks have to make owners happy.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 7/6, 10:35 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed three runs in six innings against the Red Sox on Sunday against the Red Sox. He gave up four hits, walked four, hit a batter and struck out five.

Our View: It wasn't his best start, but it is becoming more apparent that he can certainly handle his new role. It did take him 101 pitches to get 18 outs.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 7/1, 9:45 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed two earned runs on five hits over four innings in Tuesday's close 3-2 loss to Texas, with four walks and six strikeouts. He ended the night with a no decision.

Our View: He still hasn't taken a loss over his last five starts, and he has allowed two or less earned runs in each outing over the span.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 6/25, 9:28 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was dominating for 6.2 innings on Wednesday holding the Pirates scoreless while striking out seven in his second victory.

Our View: Through 48.2 innings on the year, Joba has a 2.03 ERA and 56 K as he continues to dominate hitters no matter what role he fills. He threw 114 pitches on the night signaling that the kid gloves are off.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 6/25, 8:48 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain makes his fifth start on Wednesday night still looking for his first victory as a starter. The Yankees invade Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates.

Our View: Chamberlain has taken a no-decision in each of his first four starts. He's pitched well enough to win in three of the four games sporting a 2.46 ERA since joining the rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 6/19, 3:53 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain only allowed one earned run on four hits over 5.2 innings of work in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Padres, with three walks and nine strikeouts. He exited the game with a no decision.

Our View: This was a great outing despite only lasting 5.2 innings. He should continue to get stronger with every start.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 6/19, 11:50 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain will be making his fourth start of the season today when the Yankees host the Padres in the Bronx, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Manager Joe Girardi will not restrict his pitch count today, and will let him throw upwards of 100 pitches, but will keep a close eye on him. It will depend on the difficulty of his innings. He threw six strong innings in his last start (his final pitched clocked at 97 mph), and is a good fantasy option at Yankee Stadium today, especially against a Padres team that will be without Kevin Kouzmanoff.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 6/13, 11:12 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed one run on six hits, walked four and struck out two in a no-decision on Friday night.

Our View: Chamberlain threw 88 pitches -- 54 for strikes -- as he continues to build his pitch count as a starter.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 6/13, 9:53 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain's pitch count has been increased, and he will be allowed 95 in his next outing on Friday, according to Newsday.

Our View: Most Yankees' starters go between 90 and 110 pitches per outing. So, he can now be considered a "regular" starter, but it remains to be seen if he is ready to go the distance on the mound. Tonight will be an important step for him, and he will of course be on our radar.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 6/8, 2:30 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's second start was better than his first start, but he still wasn't the dominating force he's been as a reliever. Joba made it through 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out five. He threw 78 pitches.

Our View: It was good to see Joba have better control this time out. He'll get better. Be patient with him.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 6/3, 7:24 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's first big-league start didn't go as well as hoped. Joba lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walks while striking out three.

Our View: Joba's control evaded him Tuesday evening. He threw 62 pitches in the outing. Once he gets that pitch count up he'll be the fantasy factor that everyone is expecting.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 5/30, 4:12 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain will make his first start in the Yankees' rotation on Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Chamberlain is expected to be on a pitch count of around 65-70 for his start on Tuesday, which the team is hoping will get them through about five innings.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 5/30, 11:37 AM CT
According to the NY Post, Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman were undecided whether Joba Chamberlain would start Monday or Tuesday. Monday's game is against the Twins at the Metrodome and would provide a calmer setting than Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium against the Blue Jays.

Our View: Pitching Monday offers two pluses. It would move Andy Pettitte back a day giving him an extra day of rest -- and Chamberlain's father, Harlan, will be on hand to watch on Monday in Minnesota.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/28, 9:42 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain fared well Wednesday in what could be his last relief appearance before the move to the starting rotation. Joba allowed a hit and a walk but no runs while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings.

Our View: Chamerlain threw 28 pitches in the outing and then threw afterward in the bullpen while Mariano Rivera closed the game out. He is likely to start in Ian Kennedy's place next Tuesday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/28, 5:52 PM CT
The Yankees will have an open spot in their rotation next week, as Ian Kennedy will be placed on the DL. Joba Chamberlain seems to be the most likely candidate to take his place, but manager Joe Girardi wouldn't commit to Chamberlain until he sees the righty pitch tonight in relief. "I can't tell you, 100 percent, that he's going to take that (rotation spot)," Girardi said. "It's obviously something that's crossed everybody's mind."

Our View: We can't imagine anything could happen tonight that would keep Girardi from going with Joba next week, but we'll update you on his plans when they're revealed.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 5/27, 3:45 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's next relief appearance could be his last before being promoted to the Yankees' rotation, according to Newsday. The Yankees are targeting Chamberlain to throw 50 to 55 pitches Wednesday, as they continue to prepare him to join the rotation. He threw a career-high 40 pitches Saturday. If he reaches 55 pitches tomorrow and is on track to throw 65 to 70 the next time out, it might be difficult to count on getting so many pitches in a relief appearance. So instead of trying to bring Chamberlain in as early as the fifth inning, the Yankees might have him make his final relief outing tomorrow. Manager Joe Girardi said, "It could be, but we'll see."

Our View: Once Chamberlain becomes a starter, the Yankees could use a six-man rotation temporarily, and Girardi noted that they'll have to think about that.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 5/26, 9:27 PM CT
Before Joba Chamberlain joins the Yankees starting rotation his pitch count needs to increase. His next appearance is scheduled to target 55 pitches, and could come as early as Tuesday.

Our View: Expect him to reach his 55 pitch target on Tuesday when Ian Kennedy takes the mound. Don't, however, expect Chamberlain to join the rotation for another couple of weeks. He will need to reach 70-80 pitches in an outing, and when that opportunity will present itself is unpredictable at best.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 5/23, 8:58 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is slated to pitch on Saturday against the Mariners, and he will likely get his pitch count up to 45, the New York Post reports. The Yankees have not announced a timetable for his first start, but manager Joe Girardi said it wouldn't happen within the next two weeks. "Your guess is as good as mine," Chamberlain admits. "It's just going to kind of depend on how my body reacts."

Our View: Between in-game and bullpen work, Joba will stretch out his arm, and we imagine three weeks is a pretty good guess as to a timetable. Fantasy owners will need to show a bit of patience.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/21, 11:15 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain is finally beginning his transition to the Yankees rotation. The youngster pitched the final two innings of an 8-0 win over Baltimore Wednesday, the first step in stretching Chamberlain out. "This is the timetable that we had set," manager Joe Girardi said in the AP. "It's going to (take) him a while to (get) where he's going be - a hundred pitches. But this is what we had planned all along, and we're sticking to our plan that we talked about over the winter and in spring training."

Our View: It will take Joba at least until early June to build his pitch count up to around the 100 mark. Ian Kennedy would be the most likely candidate for a demotion once Chamberlain is ready, though if Darrell Rasner comes back to earth, he would certainly be a candidate
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 5/18, 9:02 AM CT
Yankees manager Joe Girardi has told reporters that RHP Joba Chamberlain's transition to the starting rotation may be over, at least for 2007, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Post turned to general manager Brian Cashman for confirmation but he passed on comment. Instead, Girardi folded, stating when asked about the future development of the current pride of the Yankees pitching staff and if he would stay in the bullpen, "It's possible, yes." This is a noteworthy change from the line the Yankees have put forth on Chamberlain up to this point and further adds intrigue to the pitching rotation in New York. If more news on this story comes forth, we will update.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 5/14, 9:22 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain struck out the side in the eighth to earn his 10th hold of the season as the Yankees held on to score a 2-1 victory over the Rays on Wednesday night.

Our View: Chamberlain to Rivera is a nice option for a manager to have. When the Yankees have the lead after seven innings, they are nearly automatic.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 5/6, 9:35 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain showed his human side on Tuesday. The reliever allowed three runs in one inning against the Indians. Chamberlain walked two batters and got two outs before serving up a homer to David Dellucci. It's just the second home run Chamberlain has allowed in 37.1 career innings.

Our View: It happens to the best of them, and there's absolutely no reason for alarm.

Joba Chamberlain's father left the hospital after recovering from respiratory failure brought on by pneumonia, according to the AP. Harlan Chamberlain said Tuesday he was feeling stronger and thanked people for their thoughts and prayers. He collapsed at home on April 13 and was hospitalized. Joba Chamberlain left that night after the Yankees’ game against Boston to be with his father.

Our View: This should ease Joba's mind now, and he can go back to generating good numbers on the mound for the Yankees. He allowed two runs over 11.1 innings, with 14 strikeouts and a 0.97 WHIP.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 4/27, 1:06 PM CT
The New York Yankees report RHP Joba Chamberlain is available for work if needed today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Chamberlain slipped on a wet field at US Cellular Field in Chicago on Thursday and suffered a mild hamstring strain, prompting the Yanks to give the hurler two full days off from pitching. Chamberlain reports today that he feels just fine and is there if needed as the Yanks gave him a loose bullpen session on Saturday to test the hammy and insure he was all good to go. He's there and ready should the Yanks give him the call against the Cleveland Indians today.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/25, 12:08 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain picked up his first loss of the season after allowing two hits and a run in 1.1 innings on Thursday to the White Sox. It was the first loss of his big league career.

Our View: Chamberlain now has a 0.81 ERA and 0.87 WHIP in 33.1 career IP, so we are fairly certain that you shouldn't worry too much about tonight's loss.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 4/21, 5:07 PM CT
Updating a previous report on Joba Chamberlain, GM Brian Cashman said on Monday that the fire-balling hurler will remain in the bullpen for now despite what Hank Steinbrenner wants, this according to Newsday. "Joba's staying in the bullpen right now," Cashman said. "That's where we're at. [Putting him in the rotation is] not something that's going to happen here early on, and [Hank] knows that. We've talked about it. I don't know what set him off."

Our View: The plan has been to limit Joba's innings, and it looks like the Yankees will stick with that plan even with the struggles of Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 4/21, 12:25 PM CT
Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner wants Joba Chamberlain to be in the starting rotation, as of about nine months ago. "I want him as a starter and so does everyone else, including him, and that is what we are working toward and we need him there now," Steinbrenner tells the New York Times. "The mistake was already made last year switching him to the bullpen out of panic or whatever. I had no say in it last year and I wouldn’t have allowed it."

Our View: We're pretty sure Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman have a say in these things, too. Chamberlain is undoubtedly talented and will be in the rotation this year, but the Yankees also need to watch his innings count. We'll see if Steinbrenner's wishes turn into action.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 4/19, 9:27 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain returned to the Yankees on Saturday and he needed 19 pitches to strike out two batters in a scoreless inning of work.

Our View: Chamberlain has eight K and two BB in 6.1 innings on the year, but he hasn't allowed a run as he continues to dominate hitters.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 4/19, 1:51 PM CT
The Yankees expect reliever J Joba Chamberlain to return for tonight's game against the Baltimore Orioles, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Chamberlain is currently gone on bereavement, having left on Monday to be with his ailing father in Lincoln, Nebraska. He hasn't pitched since April 10.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 4/18, 1:28 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's father is off the respirator and continues to make positive progress, the AP reports. "After several difficult days, my father is feeling much better," Chamberlain says in a statement. "He is still in the critical care unit of the hospital and more tests await him, but he is off the ventilator and breathing on his own. Each day he’s acting more and more like himself." The reliever remains away from the team indefinitely.

Our View: We're not going to speculate on when Joba can return because it's really not important compared to what else is going on in the reliever's life.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 4/17, 6:47 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain's father is making progress while remaining hospitalized, the New York Yankees said, notes CBS Sports. Chamberlain missed his fourth consecutive game Thursday night to be with his stricken father in Nebraska.

Our View: New York manager Joe Girardi said he spoke to Chamberlain on the phone Thursday but still doesn't have a time line for his return.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 4/16, 8:05 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain, who is away from the team to be with his ailing father, could return to the bullpen this week as his father's health has greatly improved, this according to MLB.com.

Our View: Chamberlain is of to a tremendous start yet against with six hits and no runs allowed through 5.1 innings, and he serves as a tremendous setup bridge to Mariano Rivera.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 4/15, 6:16 PM CT
There's no timetable for Joba Chamberlain's return to active duty, which leaves a void in the Yanks' bullpen.

Our View: The club recalled right-hander Jonathan Albaladejo from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday to take Chamberlain's place in the bullpen.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 4/14, 1:11 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain will be gone at least three days to attend to his ailing father, according to the NY Post. His father remains in critical condition after collapsing on Sunday, and the team noted that Chamberlain will be away for as long as it takes his father's condition to be resolved.

Our View: We wish his family well. Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo has been recalled from Triple-A to take his place on the roster.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 4/14, 7:58 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain has left the Yankees to attend to his ailing father in Nebraska, according to the NY Daily News. His father had collapsed at his home, and was listed in critical condition on Sunday night.

Our View: The Yankees will likely be without Chamberlain on Monday against Tampa Bay, and the team did not state how long he may be away.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 4/2, 7:24 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is off to a strong start as he held Toronto hitless over one inning of work on Tuesday, with one walk and two strikeouts. He should serve as a solid setup man until he works his way up into the Yankees' rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 3/23, 7:18 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain will find his way out of the bullpen and into the rotation at some point this season, according to the NY Post. Yankees' GM Brian Cashman commented, "The bottom line is the guys that wind up in the 'pen wind up there because they do not have enough different pitches to start or are mediocre starters whose stuff plays better in the 'pen. Mariano Rivera was moved to the pen because of a limited assortment of pitches. He is a remarkable reliever. In Joba's case, he has four pitches that in our opinion will make him a very good starter. We felt he was a starter or set-up/closer type when we drafted him. I would rather have the starter."
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 3/20, 3:50 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was dominant in his one inning of work on Thursday as he held the Blue Jays hitless, with three strikeouts. Chamberlain will begin the season in the bullpen, as previously reported.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/19, 3:01 PM CT
The Yankees made it official on Wednesday. Joba Chamberlain will open the season in the bullpen. "We think it’s where he fits best right now," manager Joe Girardi tells the AP. "He’s a back-end guy. That’s how I’ll classify him now." The news means that Mike Mussina and Ian Kennedy will stick in the rotation alongside Chien Ming-Wang, Andy Pettitte, and Phil Hughes. There's no timetable on when (or if) Chamberlain will become a starter.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 3/15, 5:05 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain earned his first spring win as he allowed three runs on four hits over three innings of work against the Tigers. He had three walks and two strikeouts and gave up a home run to Curtis Granderson. He could land in the Yankees' rotation this season, but will likely start out in the bullpen.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 3/10, 11:40 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain is trying to work on more than just his fastball this spring, this according to MLB.com. "I've just got to attack the zone more and trust my stuff, and not be too perfect with it," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain has been working on a two-seamer he learned from Chien-Ming Wang that he hopes will induce more groundballs this season.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesWednesday 3/5, 7:08 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain allowed two hits, walked one, hit a batter and allowed a 2-run homer to Garret Jones on Wednesday. Joba threw only 20 of 36 pitches for strikes against the Twins. “Joba was missing with his breaking ball early in the count, and getting in some bad counts,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s a learning experience.” Momma said there will be days like this. Look for Chamberlain to start the year in the bullpen for the Yanks before being transitioned into the rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 2/22, 8:20 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain will be a valuable member of the Yankees pitching staff whether he works from the bullpen or the rotation, and he is approaching the season with that thought in mind, according to the AP. “Everything in life is uncertain,” he said. “It doesn’t matter to me. Just to be thought of in both aspects I think is an honor.” With an aging Mike Mussina, an inexperienced Ian Kennedy and the up in the air status of Andy Pettitte, it seems like the Yankees could use Joba in the rotation, but they are going to make sure they don't burn up his fantastic arm with too many innings so he figures to spend at least part of the year in the bullpen.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 2/12, 10:29 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain will prepare during spring training as a starter, but the young phenom will begin the season in the bullpen, barring injury to any of the other five main rotation members, according to the NY Post. The Yankees don't want Chamberlain to exceed his workload from last year by much more than 30 innings. The team will use Joba out of the pen for the first two months before sending him to the minors for 3-4 weeks to stretch him out in preparation to be a full-time starter in the second half. Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy will begin the year in the rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 2/9, 4:27 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain still is uncertain as to what role he will fill this season, but it appears that the team is leaning toward slotting him in the rotation at this point. "All I've continued to say this winter is that he's a starter, we look at him as a starter and we're going to prepare him as a starter this spring," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. Chamberlain will have a ton of value in either role after his 34 K, 6 BB performance in just 24 innings late last season, though he would obviously benefit his owners if he were stretched out in a starting role. Yankees GM Brian Cashman told LoHud.com that no decision has been made about how to use Joba Chamberlain at the start of the season. It will depend largely on how Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy look this spring. Cashman stated the obvious by saying that Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina will be in the rotation for sure.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 1/13, 9:57 AM CT
Will Joba Chamberlain start the 2008 season in the Yankees rotation or bullpen? The final decision will be in the hands of manager Joe Girardi. "It's ultimately up to Joe Girardi," senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner told the Newark Star-Ledger. "Joe knows how to handle pitchers better than any of us." General manager Brian Cashman insists he will be part of the decision, as well. Chamberlain is currently being treated by the media as if he will be a member of the starting rotation.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 11/2, 12:02 PM CT
The Yankees have already announced that Joba Chamberlain will enter spring training next year as starter. However, if the team is unable to re-sign Mariano Rivera, then they might reconsider leaving him in the bullpen, according to Newsday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSaturday 10/13, 10:12 PM CT
The Yankees have confirmed that Joba Chamberlain will enter spring training next year as a starter, according to MLB.com. There had been much speculation surrounding the issue, and the possible departure of Mariano Rivera, who will be a free agent at the end of the year, led to thoughts that the Yanks could even install the youngster as their closer in 2008. That said, this is a wise decision, as Chamberlain will have much more value in a starting role than he would in relief.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 10/11, 10:25 AM CT
There has been speculation about whether the Yankees will leave Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen next year or insert him into the starting rotation. We may not have a clear idea as to what the club intends to do until next spring, but Chamberlain has no preference about what role he's in, according to Newsday. "Anything I can do to help the team in any aspect in any light, I'll do the best I can," Chamberlain said. "I'll try to do a good job every time I go out there or whenever I go out there out of the bullpen." Chamberlain would have more value in a starting role, but if closer Mariano Rivera opts to leave via free agency, the Yanks may want to lean on the youngster in the late innings.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 9/25, 10:55 AM CT
Although no official decision has been made, manager Joe Torre did indicate on Monday that the Yankees could keep Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen next year, according to Newsday. Chamberlain has been lights out this year, holding a 0.42 ERA in 16 games, but the Yanks would be wise to at least give him a look in a starting role next spring.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesFriday 8/31, 10:33 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was suspended on Friday for two games and fined $1,000, a day after he threw consecutive 98-99 mph pitches over the head of Boston's Kevin Youkilis, according to the AP.

Our View: The rest will help keep the Yankees from overusing him, but that could have been done without throwing at someone's head.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/26, 6:25 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain's nine-inning scoreless streak is the longest by a Yankee making his major league debut since Matt Smith began with 12 clean innings last season, the AP reports. Chamberlain, who's struck out 15 batters in his nine innings of work, was given a planned day of rest Saturday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 8/12, 7:54 AM CT
The Yankees plan to be very cautious with top prospect Joba Chamberlain over the final weeks of the season. "Down the road, he's going to be a starter; we certainly want to keep him as safe as possibly can," manager Joe Torre told the New York Daily News. Chamberlain will not pitch on back-to-back days. And when he works more than one inning in an appearance, he will take at least the following two days off. He worked two innings in each of his two appearances thus far and has allowed no runs, one hit and two walks. Since he pitched two innings Friday, he won't be available again until at least Monday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesTuesday 8/7, 6:19 PM CT
The Yankees recalled top prospect Joba Chamberlain from Triple-A on Tuesday to work out of the bullpen, according to the AP. He holds a 2.45 ERA with a 13.8 K/9 rate in 18 games (15 starts) between High-, Double- and Triple-A this year. His fantasy value is limited in relief, but he has star potential and is definitely a guy to keep an eye on.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesMonday 8/6, 9:51 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain is expected to have at least one more relief outing at Triple-A before being summoned to the big leagues. "He's not getting on a plane to Toronto [today]," GM Brian Cashman said to Newsday. Chamberlain struck out five in two relief innings Saturday.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 8/2, 12:22 AM CT
Joba Chamberlain has been sent down to Double-A Trenton. He made his first appearance as a reliever there Wednesday, striking out two in a hitless inning. Chamberlain's demotion doesn't figure to dampen his chances at joining the Yanks bullpen at some point.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesSunday 7/29, 9:34 PM CT
The Yankees are moving prospect Joba Chamberlain to the bullpen at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The move is being made to prepare him for a possible callup to the big leagues as a reliever. Chamberlain is 9-2 with a 2.56 ERA and 125/27 K/BB rate in 84 1/3 innings over three minor league levels this year.
Joba Chamberlain, P, New York YankeesThursday 7/26, 12:43 PM CT
Joba Chamberlain was impressive in his Triple-A debut on Wednesday, tossing five scoreless innings against Louisville, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out 10. Prior to his promotion, he went 8-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 14 combined starts between High- and Double-A, whiffing 115 in 79 1/3 innings. Many teams have asked the Yankees about Chamberlain with the trade deadline approaching, but the Bronx Bombers aren’t even willing to toy with the idea of trading him. In fact, some scouts like Chamberlain more than Phil Hughes, which is no small compliment.
