Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 6/10, 3:05 PM CT
Steve Trachsel has been designated for assignment by the Orioles, according to the Baltimore Sun. The team purchased the contract of infielder Oscar Salazar from Triple-A Norfolk to cover the open spot on the roster.

Our View: Trachsel struggled as a starter and wasn't effective in relief, and this move was to be expected. He held a 2-5 record over 39.2 innings, with a dismal 8.39 ERA and 2.02 WHIP.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 6/8, 9:21 PM CT
Baltimore reliever Steve Trachsel may find an early end to his 2008 season with the Orioles, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: One day after the veteran right-hander had to be bailed out of a difficult late-game relief appearance, Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said Sunday that a decision on Trachsel's fate could be approaching. Trembley said he plans to discuss the matter with pitching coach Rick Kranitz. After being dropped from the starting rotation, Trachsel was moved to the bullpen full-time for the first time in his career. However, after he allowed just two runs in his five-inning bullpen debut, Trachsel gave up four runs (two earne
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 6/2, 4:19 PM CT
Manager Dave Trembley hasn't named a starter for Tuesday's game against the Twins, but it won't be Steve Trachsel, the Baltimore Sun reports. The veteran right-hander will remain in the bullpen.

Our View: We should know later tonight or tomorrow who the Orioles will use on Tuesday. The top two candidates are Matt Albers and Radhames Liz. Frankly, we'd argue that Albers has earned it.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 5/30, 7:10 PM CT
Manager Dave Trembley is keeping quiet regarding Steve Trachsel's status in the Orioles' rotation, according to the AP. Trembley isn't ready to put Trachsel back in the rotation, even though there is a spot open for Tuesday against the Twins. Trachsel hasn't pitched in a week, and Trembley said, "I have some options. It depends on what I do in these first two games of this series (against Boston). I’ll probably have a decision after the game tomorrow or first thing Sunday." Matt Albers is believed to be a possibility for Tuesday's start.

Our View: Trachsel won't work out of the bullpen, and if he gets passed again in the rotation, Trembley noted that the team would have to re-evaluate his place on the roster. Trachsel holds a 8.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP over eight starts, and should be dumped from your roster, regardless of what Trembley does with him.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 5/18, 9:18 PM CT
Steve Trachsel, who has had his last two starts skipped as the result of multiple off days, knows he will start one of the team's two games against the Rays this weekend, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: This news means Trachsel will have gone at least two weeks between starts, but that's what happens when you are one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball. Do yourself a favor, and dump Trachsel if he is still is on your squad because he isn't likely to do anything but help your competition by sinking your teams ratios.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 5/14, 7:35 AM CT
Due to Monday's off-day, the Orioles will take the opportunity to skip Steve Trachsel in the rotation. Jeremy Guthrie started on Tuesday, and he'll be followed by Daniel Cabrera, Garrett Olson, and Brian Burres, the Baltimore Sun notes.

Our View: Trachsel pitched much better his last time out, but we don't believe the veteran is long for this rotation. The Orioles are probably just waiting for another young arm to step up and claim the spot.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 5/9, 11:05 PM CT
Steve Trachsel , who was winless in his last five starts, gave up two runs and five hits in 5.1 innings as the O's beat the Royals for the 11th straight time.

Our View: Trachsel had lasted just three innings in each of his previous two starts, allowing 11 runs and 12 hits with seven walks in six innings.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 5/6, 7:56 AM CT
The Orioles need to make a call regarding struggling starter Steve Trachsel, according to the Baltimore Sun. The 37-year old is 1-4 with a 7.42 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over 26.2 innings, with 19 walks. Trachsel said, "I'm not real happy. I don't know what else to say. I just haven't been getting the job done lately."

Our View: It won't be easy to simply drop him from the rotation. The Orioles lack any experienced starters to turn to in the minors. The young guns they thought were ready (Garrett Olson, Jim Johnson, Matt Albers), are already with the team. Adding someone who is still "green" in Triple-A, such as Hayden Penn or Radhames Liz, could hinder development and likely wouldn't solve the problem, which also taxes the bullpen, as Trachsel is averaging just over four innings per start.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 4/15, 11:24 PM CT
Steve Trachsel gave up five runs, five hits and three walks in 2.1 ugly innings. The O's right-hander retired only five of 14 batters; the other two outs occurred on attempted steals.

Our View: The veteran had terrific career numbers against the Jays, but at some point in a pitchers career, those numbers don't wash.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 4/15, 1:41 PM CT
Steve Trachsel will take the hill against Toronto tonight, a team he is yet to lose to, according to MLB.com. Trachsel is 6-0 against Toronto over his career, with a 3.12 ERA in seven starts.

Our View: He is off to a pretty good start with a 1-1 record and a 3.00 ERA, and ranks as a good fantasy play as a sleeper for tonight.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 4/10, 7:34 PM CT
Steve Trachsel gave up three runs and five hits over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Rangers. The 37-year-old right-hander struck out two and walked four in his effort.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 4/9, 2:31 PM CT
The Orioles have won six games in a row, and Steve Trachsel will look to stretch the streak to seven when he takes the hill against Texas tonight, according to MLB.com. He is off to a solid 1-0 start with a 3.18 ERA, but remains an unstable fantasy prospect.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 4/3, 8:02 PM CT
The Orioles will keep their rotation in order after Thursday's rainout, according to the AP. Steve Trachsel will now start Friday against the Mariners, with everyone else simply moving back a day. It doesn't really matter who Trachsel faces. He's a sketchy fantasy play, at best, no matter what.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 3/27, 8:12 PM CT
The Orioles have purchased Steve Trachsel's contract, according to MLB.com. He will provide depth and experience to a young Baltimore pitching staff, but his fantasy value is limited.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 3/27, 4:06 PM CT
Steve Trachsel was solid over six innings of work against Washington on Thursday as he only allowed one run on four hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. He lowered his spring ERA to 5.21 as he continues to compete for a spot on the final roster.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 3/27, 2:20 PM CT
Steve Trachsel pitched well on Thursday, his final tune up before beginning the season as the O's No. 4 starter. The veteran right-hander pitched six innings, allowing four hits, one run, one walk and striking out two. This is about as good as it will get with Trachsel. He won't strike out too many batters and giving up one run in six innings equates to a huge success.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 3/15, 4:26 PM CT
Steve Trachsel had another unstable outing on the mound on Saturday (in a 7-6 loss to Florida) as he allowed five runs on six hits over four innings of work. He could still land a spot in the Orioles' rotation, but holds very little fantasy value.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 2/11, 3:34 PM CT
The Orioles signed veteran right-hander Steve Trachsel to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training on Monday, according to the AP. Trachsel started last season with the Orioles and went 6-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 25 starts before being dealt to the Cubs on Aug. 31 for infielder Scott Moore and righthander Rocky Cherry, but the deal did not work out for the Cubs - as Trachsel went 1-3 with an 8.31 ERA in four starts for Chicago. Fantasy owners should keep their distance from a guy who had 20 more walks than strikeouts last year.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 2/10, 6:18 PM CT
The Orioles want to bring in at least one veteran starter to eat innings and to offer insurance so they won't have to rely so heavily on unproven youngsters, according to the Baltimore Sun. The free-agent market is thin. Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia are too risky for health reasons. Kyle Lohse and Livan Hernandez are probably too expensive. Jeff Weaver and David Wells might carry too much baggage. That leaves Josh Fogg and Steve Trachsel as the most likely candidates. Trachsel threw 141 innings for the O's in '07 walking 69 and striking out only 45.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 11/3, 2:53 PM CT
The Cubs declined their $4.75 million club option on Steve Trachsel Saturday, according to the AP. The hurler was paid a $100,000 buyout. Most teams still view Trachsel a back-of-the-rotation starter. We suppose that's true; he's just not a very good one.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 9/26, 11:36 AM CT
Nothing is set in stone, but it appears that manager Lou Pinella is thinking about tinkering with his rotation. Jason Marquis will start tonight, but Steve Trachsel is not a given to get the ball on Thursday. "I said [today's] starter was the same. I haven't said anything else," Pinella told the Chicago Sun-Times. "And I haven't said the rotation for Cincinnati, either." Pinella could move Rich Hill and Carlos Zambrano up a day and pitch them on regular rest, but then he'd have to go with Ted Lilly and Marquis on short rest over the weekend (assuming Trachsel or Sean Marshall don't start).
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 9/23, 6:57 AM CT
Steve Trachsel threw in a simulated game after Saturday's win and will get the nod Thursday in Florida against the Marlins, the AP reports. He was bumped out of the rotation when the Cubs went with a four-man setup.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 9/17, 11:57 AM CT

Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 9/11, 11:46 AM CT
Steve Trachsel will make his next start for the Cubs on three day's rest on Thursday. The veteran threw only 47 pitches in his start Sunday, when he gave up six runs in two innings. "I don't think we have much choice," manager Lou Piniella said in the Chicago Sun-Times. "He didn't throw that many pitches in Pittsburgh."
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 9/6, 10:43 AM CT
Steve Trachsel, who allowed three runs in six innings against the Astros on Tuesday, will make his next start on Sunday against Pittsburgh, according to the Chicago Tribune. Had Trachsel struggled in his last start, the Cubs could have gone with Ted Lilly on Sunday and pushed Trachsel back.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 8/31, 1:33 PM CT
The Cubs acquired Steve Trachsel from the Orioles Friday in exchange for infielder Scott Moore and reliever Rocky Cherry. Both players had been playing for Triple-A Iowa. Trachsel would presumably take Sean Marshall's spot in the rotation, though the Cubs will have a need for six starters in September, as they have a doubleheader during the month and don't have an off day until Sept. 20.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/20, 6:00 PM CT
The Orioles activated Steve Trachsel from the disabled list on Friday, according to the AP. He had been sidelined since June 30 with a strained gluteus muscle. Trachsel, who holds a 4.95 ERA in 17 starts this season, is slated to start on Saturday against the A's.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/16, 6:20 AM CT
Steve Trachsel reported only normal soreness Sunday after making a rehab appearance the day before. Barring a setback during the week, Trachsel is expected to come off the disabled list to start Saturday's game, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I felt pretty good," he said. "I was a little rusty, a little strong early from the time off." He's been out with a strained gluteus muscle, but it appears he's about ready to get back into game action.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/13, 10:56 AM CT
Steve Trachsel will make a rehab start this weekend, the Baltimore Sun reports. Trachsel says he's ready to go deep into a game, with 80-100 pitches possible. He's out with a strained gluteus and is on track to return later this month.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/9, 6:39 AM CT
Steve Trachsel probably will begin a rehab assignment next week. He's slated to toss bullpen sessions Tuesday and Thursday this week and likely will work one or two rehab games before coming off the disabled list, according to the Baltimore Sun. He's recovering from a strained gluteus and is on track to return later this month.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 7/1, 6:39 AM CT
The Orioles placed Steve Trachsel on the disabled list prior to Saturday's game. He was diagnosed with a strained gluteus after allowing five runs on nine hits over 1 2/3 innings during Friday's start, according to the Baltimore Sun. The O's likely will call Garrett Olson up from Triple-A Norfolk or have Rob Bell start Wednesday in place Trachsel.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 2/13, 8:36 AM CT
With Kris Benson likely out for the season, the Orioles agreed on a one-year, $3.2 million deal with Steve Trachsel on Monday, according to the Baltimore Sun. The deal is pending a physical. Trachsel is expected to slide in as Baltimore's No. 5 starter.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 10/16, 9:35 AM CT
Mets manager Willie Randolph admitted that he might use Darren Oliver over Steve Trachsel in a potential Game 7, even if the bruised thigh that forced Trachsel out of Saturday's game is healed, according to the New York Daily News. Trachsel said his thigh is "better," though he has yet to run on it.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 10/14, 9:55 PM CT
Steve Trachsel was hit on his right leg by a line drive during Saturday's NLCS game and was forced to leave the contest, according to the AP. Trachsel, who was replaced by Darren Oliver, was diagnosed with a bruised thigh.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 10/2, 10:18 AM CT
Steve Trachsel is expected to rejoin the Mets in time to start Game 3 of the NLDS on Saturday, according to the New York Daily News. He missed his start Sunday to deal with a family matter.
Steve Trachsel, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 7/27, 8:31 AM CT
The Mets will push Steve Trachsel back a couple of days in the rotation in order to keep Tom Glavine on his regular rest schedule. The club announced that Pedro Martinez, Orlando Hernandez and Glavine would be this weekend's starters.
