Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 11/13, 6:49 PM CT
Salomon Torres had his $3.75 million option for 2009 picked up by the Brewers on Thursday, even though he has decided to retire, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: This move simply allows the Brewers to retain Torres' rights if he were to change his mind. They won't be on the hook for his salary if he remains retired
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 11/11, 3:19 PM CT
Salomon Torres has decided to hang up his cleats after 12 seasons of service in the majors, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The 36-year-old opted to retire to spend more time with his family and faith. He set a career-high with 28 saves with Milwaukee in 2008, while maintaining a 1.35 WHIP. Torres remains on the Brewers' roster, who have until Saturday to exercise his $3.75 million option with a $300,000 buyout.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 9/9, 12:14 AM CT
Salomon Torres not only blew his seventh save of the season Monday night, but the three runs he gave up proved to be the difference as the Reds beat the Brewers 5-4.

Our View: Milwaukee has had all kinds of trouble closing out games this season. Although we don't expect Torres' job to be in jeopardy, due to the lack of options the Brewers have.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 7/28, 11:01 PM CT
Salomon Torres notched his second loss of the month against the Cubs on Monday. Entering a tie game, he walked three and gave up two hits to go with two runs in the ninth innning at Wrigley.

Our View: Torres has been mostly reliable in a number of big wins for the Brewers but this one was a big loss. It's not likely that he is in danger of losing his job, though. This was really the first game that he showed any problems with his command.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 7/22, 11:35 PM CT
Salomon Torres recorded his 18th save in 22 chances on Tuesday in St. Louis. He pitched a perfect ninth to protect a 4-3 lead.

Our View: Torres has pitched well enough to become the no-question closer for the Brewers despite the successful return of Eric Gagne.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/24, 8:52 PM CT
Despite giving up a two run home run to Mark Teixeira in the ninth, Salomon Torres notched his eighth save of the month.

Our View: Torres appears to be a reliable closer. Eric Gagne began his minor league rehab assignment tonight, but this is Torres' job to lose at this point.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 6/21, 5:53 PM CT
Eric Gagne is expected to return to the Brewers bullpen next weekend, but it won't be in the closer role. Manager Ned Yost told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that Salomon Torres will keep his gig.

Our View: Torres is a perfect 9-for-9 in save chances since assuming the ninth inning duties. If he should happen to still be on your waiver wire, snatch him up.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/8, 7:46 PM CT
Milwaukee reliever Salomon Torres earned his seventh save of the season in closing the Rockies for a 3-2 win. Torres pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing no hits with one walk, three ground outs, and two fly outs.

Our View: Torres has now has six saves in his last seven outings, allowing just two hits with no runs, two walks, and 11 strikeouts during that span.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/3, 9:01 PM CT
Milwaukee reliever Salomon Torres is reportedly making manager Ned Yost rethink what he may do when regular closer Eric Gagne returns from injury, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Torres has pitched well in his new role as the head of the closer-by-committee approach the Brewers are now employing, carrying a 2.62 ERA coming into Tuesday with saves converted in five of his last six opportunities. Monday night's game brought the bullpen's contribution front and center, as Guillermo Mota and Torres pitched two scoreless innings in a game that the Brewers won by just a run. Torres was hindered by two Brewers errors, but was able to escape trouble and close out the game.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 6/2, 10:13 PM CT
It wasn't pretty (one hit, one walk), but Salomon Torres earned his sixth save on Monday. The right-hander has five saves and one win since May 24, and he has allowed only two hits over his last 5.2 innings.

Our View: The Brewers have said that Eric Gagne won't return this week, and it doesn't look like Torres is ready to give up the role. We don't have a ton of faith in Salomon, but it's tough to argue with his recent work.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 5/26, 4:52 PM CT
Salomon Torres picked up his third save of the year in Monday's Memorial Day extra inning 4-3 win over the Nationals.

Our View: Manager Ned Yost said that the team would approach the ninth inning role by committee, but Torres would be the first option. With Eric Gagne (rotator cuff) out Torres has been the man so far.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 5/24, 9:19 PM CT
Salomon Torres picked up his second save of the year Saturday, pitching around two Bill Hall errors in the ninth inning.

Our View: Manager Ned Yost has said that he'd be going to a committee approach at closer while Eric Gagne is out, but Torres is definitely the head of that committee.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 5/21, 6:11 PM CT
With Eric Gagne being shut down until further notice, the Brewers will be using a committee in the closer role. However, manager Ned Yost said Salomon Torres is likely to get most of the save chances, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Our View: Torres struggled and ultimately lost the closer role with the Pirates last year. He's a solid reliever, though, and is worth a pickup in all formats.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/11, 12:34 PM CT
Brewers manager Ned Yost tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that the club could use as many as three different pitchers to replace Eric Gagne in the ninth inning. Salomon Torres and Guillermo Mota are thought to be two options.

Our View: Our guess is that a left-hander, likely Brian Shouse, would be the third option. Fantasy owners should concentrate on Torres and Mota.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 3/15, 9:40 AM CT
Salomon Torres is set to make his spring debut on Saturday, though it will come in a minor league game, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The Brewers have brought him along slowly this spring due to soreness, but it looks like he should be fine for opening day.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/2, 10:19 AM CT
Salomon Torres threw off a mound for the first time this spring on Saturday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He's been brought a long slowly thus far due to some soreness, but it doesn't appear to be anything serious at this point.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 12/8, 12:13 PM CT
Salomon Torres isn't too happy about getting traded to the Brewers, and he could retire rather than report to Milwaukee. "It's a giant move and I have to make a decision if I want to go forward," Torres told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "This is going to change my life, my family's life. If I leave them here, they're going to have to be without me for a full year. If I take them with me, they're going to be affected." Brewers GM Doug Melvin thinks Torres will be in a Milwaukee uniform next year. "I think it's all the emotion right now," Melvin said. "When he talked to (Brewers scouting director) Jack (Zduriencik), he said he was thrilled to be coming to the Brewers. I'm hoping he gets over this. All indications he gave Jack were that he wanted to come."
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 12/7, 3:07 PM CT
The Brewers acquired Salomon Torres from the Pirates Friday in exchange for a pair of minor-league pitchers, according to the AP. Torres is coming off a bad year, holding a 5.47 ERA in 56 games for the Pirates, but he does have closing experience, so it's at least possible he gets a look in the ninth inning at some point next year following the departure of Francisco Cordero.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 8/30, 12:10 PM CT
Salomon Torres received a cortisone shot in his elbow Monday and said that he definitely plans to pitch again this season. Torres has been shut down twice this year by elbow soreness, but there apparently is no structural damage, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 8/29, 4:45 AM CT
Salomon Torres (elbow) will rest for several days before starting to throw again Friday, the AP reports. He's not eligible to return until Sept. 6. It's very doubtful he'll do anything fantasy-worthy the remainder of the year.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 8/28, 11:22 AM CT
Salomon Torres will find out today if he'll be able to pitch again this season. The reliever had an arthrogram on his elbow Monday, and the results are due this afternoon, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The arthrogram alone prevents a pitcher from having any activity for a week. Torres is optimistic that the strained MCL he has now is not as severe as the one that shut him down in New York earlier this year. "If New York was a 10, this is a 7," he said. "But we'll see. I know that we have to get this taken care of."
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 8/26, 6:22 AM CT
Salomon Torres went on the disabled list Saturday with an inflamed pitching elbow. It's been a lost year for Torres; he was the team's closer when the season started, but he quickly lost the job and has a 5.09 ERA for 2007.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 7/16, 8:53 AM CT
Before Sunday's game, the Pirates activated Salomon Torres from the disabled list. He had been out with a torn MCL in his elbow and will now try to improve on his 5.28 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 7/13, 9:57 AM CT
Salomon Torres will move up to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday and begin a rehab stint. If all goes well over the weekend, he could be back in the majors by Monday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He has been on the DL since June 9 due to a right elbow injury. Matt Capps has taken over the closer's role.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 7/3, 10:42 AM CT
Salomon Torres wants out of Pittsburgh. He has asked to be traded because the Pirates have set a slow recovery schedule for his rehab and because he believes the organization betrayed him during contract negotiations last offseason. "They tricked me into signing that contract, and what they are doing to me now is retaliation because I complained about it," Torres tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The reliever believes general manager Dave Littlefield convinced him to take less money in return for the team renting a baseball academy Torres built in the Dominican Republic. Torres filed a grievance through the MLBPA in March.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 6/27, 10:02 AM CT
Salomon Torres "felt good" after a throwing session on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. He has been out since June 9 due to a strained right elbow.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 6/22, 9:44 AM CT
Salomon Torres hoped to return within the next couple weeks, but he was unable to begin his throwing program on Wednesday due to continued soreness in his right elbow. As a result, Torres might be out past the All-Star break, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/12, 9:59 AM CT
Salomon Torres will not need surgery for his sore right elbow. An MRI taken on Monday showed inflammation of his medial collateral ligament, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Torres is on the DL and eligible to return on June 24.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/10, 8:35 AM CT
The Pirates placed Salomon Torres on the disabled list Saturday. He's slated to have an MRI taken of the sore MCL in his right elbow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. If he needs to have dye injected, he could need three weeks to recover. He's had elbow problems since spring training, but he only mentioned the MCL on Friday. This certainly could help explain his lousy 5.14 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. More will be known about his status following the MRI, but it doesn't sound very promising.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 6/5, 10:45 AM CT
While Matt Capps is appealing his four-game suspension, Salomon Torres will handle the closing duties for the Pirates. "If it's for four days, he'll be the closer for four days," Pirates manager Jim Tracy told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette yesterday. "If it's for three days, he'll be the closer for three days ..." Torres, who has 11 saves and a 5.33 ERA this year, was just removed from the closer role a couple of days ago.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 6/1, 7:26 PM CT
The Pirates have made a switch at the closer position. Matt Capps is in, and Salomon Torres is out, the AP reports. Torres owns 12 saves this season, but he's blown four chances and has a 4.88 ERA. Capps is 2-2 with a 3.07 ERA.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/3, 11:04 PM CT
Salomon Torres recorded his third consecutive save this week, pitching a scoreless ninth inning at Milwaukee. He did make it interesting with a walk in the middle of the frame; Torres has now allowed at least one baserunner in each of his last 10 appearances. Matt Capps pitched a perfect eighth inning in front of Torres and remains mandatory insurance for anyone tied to the Pittsburgh closer situation.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 4/30, 8:56 PM CT
Salomon Torres, who had allowed runs in each of his last three appearances, pitched a scoreless ninth against the Cubs on Monday night, picking up his eighth save of the year. Due to his recent struggles, Torres' future as the Pirates closer has come into question, but this outing certainly improves his standing.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/28, 8:08 AM CT
Salomon Torres remains the closer for the Pirates, but he'll have to improve to keep it, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "If things continue to spiral downward, you've got to look at the situation and see if there's a difference course of action we can take," manager Jim Tracy said. "But we're not to that point. And I don't want to make it seem like I'm suggesting that that's where we're headed. Not today we're not." Matt Capps likely would get the first look if Torres is pulled from the role.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 4/26, 5:06 PM CT
Salomon Torres had another rough outing Thursday, giving up two runs on a hit and two walks before John Grabow bailed him out to pick up the save. Torres has three blown saves on the year and could be losing the grip on his closer gig. Matt Capps, who had already been used Thursday before Torres came in, would likely get the first chance if the Bucs choose to replace Torres.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 4/25, 10:17 PM CT
Salomon Torres blew a save opportunity Wednesday, giving up two runs in the top of the ninth against Houston. Torres now has three blown saves on the year, while set-up man Matt Capps has been throwing the ball well (0.79 ERA over 11 1/3 innings).
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 4/4, 9:59 PM CT
Salomon Torres picked up his third save in as many days in Wednesday's victory at Houston. Torres did allow a solo homer to Craig Biggio, but he retired the other three batters without incident, striking out two. It's encouraging to see Torres off to a good start because he was very ineffective in spring training.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 3/2, 12:09 PM CT
Salomon Torres allowed two home runs and four runs over one shaky inning Thursday, though manager Jim Tracy isn't concerned, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "With his type of pitcher, you're not surprised to see it," Tracy said. "He thrives on his sinker going deep and down, and it didn't do that. And his fastball was up. No concern whatsoever." Torres was very effective as the team's closer down the stretch in 2006, and he's expected to hold that post this year.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 1/17, 3:44 PM CT
Salomon Torres is likely to be the new closer for the Pirates now that the team has agreed to deal Mike Gonzalez to the Braves. Torres was 12-for-13 on save chances from September 1 on last year.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 9/10, 1:00 AM CT
Salomon Torres got the last four outs Saturday for his fifth save in the last eight days. Torres could hold onto the closer job a while longer, perhaps the rest of the season, as the Bucs want to ease Mike Gonzalez back into action.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 9/5, 10:06 AM CT
Salomon Torres has been given both save opportunities since Mike Gonzalez landed on the DL last week, but manager Jim Tracy has stopped short of naming Torres his official closer, according to the Post-Gazette. "So far, that's just how the situations have played out," Tracy said. "But I will say this about Salomon: He is making a case for himself."
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 8/9, 8:52 AM CT
Salomon Torres was unavailable Tuesday evening due to muscle tightness in the right side of his neck, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The injury isn't believed to be serious, though.
Salomon Torres, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 7/28, 9:19 AM CT
The Giants have an interest in bringing back reliever Salomon Torres, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Torres, who spent the first two seasons of his career in San Francisco, holds a 4.21 ERA in 61 games for the Pirates this year.
