Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 7/20, 8:12 AM CT
Julian Tavarez has been designated for assignment by the Nationals, according to The Washington Post.

Our View: Hard not to see this coming. Tavarez had posted a high 4.89 ERA for the Nats this season, and a downright abysmal 1.74 WHIP, simply an unacceptable number for a reliever. Seeing as that he has pitched for nearly every team in baseball (technically, 11), and that he is now being cast away by the worst team in baseball, it's hard to see him catching on somewhere else. But then again, he's come back from the dead a few times before, so anything's possible. Regardless, stay away.

Julian Tavarez was working the ninth inning for the second night in a row, but things went terribly wrong in Washington. He allowed two hits, two walks, and five runs, only two of which were earned. He fell to 0-2 in the effort.

Our View: The Nationals bullpen is already 0-8 on the season and there seems to be no relief in sight. Joe Beimel is expected to come off the DL next Wednesday, and there's a very good chance he will see plenty of chances to close out games for the Nats.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 4/29, 9:56 PM CT
Julian Tavarez picked up his first save of the season as Washington won 4-1 in Philadelphia on Wednesday. He allowed just one hit while striking out one batter.

Our View: After a disastrous start of the season for the Nationals bullpen, it looks like they have settled on Tavarez to be their closer. He has 13 strikeouts in 9.2 innings and a 2.79 ERA through 9.2 innings this season. Joe Beimel may also get a look in that role once he returns from the DL.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 4/28, 2:41 PM CT
Julian Tavarez will be given a chance to close games with Kip Wells after the Nationals pulled Joel Hanrahan as their ninth-inning man, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: Tavarez fired 12 strikeouts over 8.2 innings of relief this season, and his fantasy stock improves - but he will still have to share save chances with Wells, and Joe Beimel (hip) could take over the closer's role when he returns from the DL.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 4/4, 6:13 PM CT
SI.com reports that pitcher Julian Tavarez made the Nationals roster.

Our View: Judging by Tavarez's comments a little more than a month ago, he's probably not very excited about this season. Look for more inconsistent effort and no fantasy value from him once again this season.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 3/29, 4:28 PM CT
Julian Tavarez allowed three runs on three hits in just one inning Sunday in a start against the Marlins.

Our View: It is not outside the realm of possibility for Tavarez to make a spot start or two throughout the season, but his place will be in the Nats bullpen to provide some veteran leadership.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 3/14, 7:30 AM CT
Julian Tavarez has signed a minor league deal with the Nationals, according to the NY Post. He would earn $500,000 if he makes the major league club.

Our View: The 35-year-old vet does have a chance to make their opening day roster, as they have issues in their bullpen, but he would not be expected to hold much fantasy value. He maintained a dismal 1.85 WHIP over 54.2 innings with Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta in 2008.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 7/9, 4:48 PM CT
Julian Tavarez was erratic yet again in his Braves debut on Tuesday. He managed just one out while giving up two hits, two walks, and one earned run.

Our View: By all accounts, it looks like Julian has effectively lost it. He may not stick with the Braves once they get some of their injured relievers back.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 7/8, 4:23 PM CT
Julian Tavarez joined his third team of the season on Tuesday when he was signed by the Atlanta Braves.

Our View: Tavarez could see immediate action in Atlanta's banged up bullpen. He's struggled all season, posting a 7.20 ERA over a 20 inning span.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/24, 8:10 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Julian Tavarez, or maybe his agent Scott Boras, rejected Milwaukee's assignment to Triple-A, forcing the Brewers to part ways with him.

Our View: This is the second time this year that Tavarez has refused an assignment. The first came while he was with the Red Sox. His command was a little sloppy in Milwaukee. Still, a team desperate for middle relief may make a run at him.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsThursday 6/19, 10:56 AM CT
The Brewers designated Julian Tavarez for assignment Thursday. The move was made to clear a roster spot for David Riske, who was activated from the DL.

Our View: Tavarez failed to make an impression in Milwaukee, holding an 8.59 ERA over seven games.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/27, 3:31 PM CT
The Brewers have activated newly acquired pitcher Julian Tavarez, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. To make room on the roster, the team sent lefty Zach Jackson to Triple-A Nashville.

Our View: Tavarez will be in uniform for the Brewers' game tonight against Atlanta at Miller Park. He should challenge for innings out of the pen.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/26, 7:07 PM CT
The Brewers have signed right-handed reliever Julian Tavarez , this according to the AP. Tavarez, who was cut loose by Boston two weeks ago, is expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday.

Our View: The team hasn't announced who they will option to make room for Tavarez.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/26, 11:45 AM CT
The Brewers could sign reliever Julian Tavarez as soon as Monday night, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The right-hander will need to pass a physical, and he could be activated prior to Tuesday's tilt with the Braves.

Our View: We all know the Brewers have issues at the back of the bullpen, but Tavarez isn't a candidate for saves. He's just another veteran arm to lean on during this troubled times.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 5/25, 1:17 PM CT
Julian Tavarez was officially granted his free agency after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox on May 12, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Tavarez can sign with whatever team he chooses, and Boston is on the hook for his $3.75 million salary until he signs with another club, at which point the new team will only have to pay the prorated minimum. Colorado was previously reported to be interested in acquiring Tavarez.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/24, 11:31 AM CT
Julian Tavarez will become a free agent after he decided to turn down the teams assignment to Triple-A, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Tavarez is now free to sign with whatever team he chooses, and the Red Sox are on the hook for his $3.75 million salary until he signs with another team at which time the new squad will only have to pay the prorated minimum.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsFriday 5/23, 10:27 PM CT
The Brewers are interested in acquiring veteran swingman Julian Tavarez from the Red Sox, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We have some interest in him," said GM Doug Melvin. "We're giving some thoughts to looking at him. We understand he has been throwing. They didn't use him a lot (in Boston), as a long guy."

Our View: Tavarez accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket earlier this week, but he isn't expected to stay there long. The Mets have also expressed interest in him.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/20, 5:05 PM CT
Julian Tavarez has accepted an outright assignment to the PawSox after clearing waivers, this according to the Boston Herald. The report notes that most don’t expect the veteran pitcher to remain there long. It appears that Tavarez only did so to allow the Sox some added time to complete a trade that will land him back in the big leagues sometime in the next few days.

Our View: The report didn't mention where Tavarez might be headed, but the Mets are a good bet according to RotoTimes sources.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/13, 9:48 AM CT
The Rockies are still trying to acquire Julian Tavarez, according to the Denver Post. The Red Sox designated Tavarez for assignment on Monday to free up a roster spot for Sean Casey. Colorado has been talking with Boston about the 34-year-old Tavarez for more than a week but cooled when the asking price for the pitcher got too high. Now that Tavarez is in limbo (the Red Sox have nine days to trade or release him), the discussions are heating up, with a deal possible to happen within the next few days. Colorado has told teams it would be willing to deal from its outfield depth, in particular, at Triple-A, where Cory Sullivan is making $1 million.

Our View: The Rockies are trying to add depth to their bullpen, and could also use Tavarez as a spot starter (he started 29 games over the past three seasons).
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/12, 2:14 PM CT
Reliever Julian Tavarez has been designated for assignment, according to the Boston Herald. Sean Casey has been activated from the DL, and the team needed to free up a roster spot for him.

Our View: Tavarez was seen as expendable, as he allowed nine earned runs on 18 hits over a mere 12.2 innings of work this season with Boston. Colorado was said to be interested in acquiring him.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/12, 12:57 PM CT
The Red Sox are still talking with the Rockies about a possible deal for pitcher Julian Tavarez, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Tavarez is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA and 2.13 WHIP over 12.2 innings, with nine walks. He isn't pitching well and is barely being used as a reliever, but the Rockies would give him more innings than the Red Sox are right now. Colorado needs help in their rotation, and he could benefit from a change of scenery.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 2/12, 3:42 PM CT
Clay Buchholz is the favorite to come away with the No. 5 spot in the Red Sox rotation, but Julian Tavarez will be in the thick of the competition, according to MLB.com. "The two very clear candidates for that are Clay and Julian Tavarez. I think we can't [forget to] recognize what Julian provided for us last year," said pitching coach John Farrell. "In the first two-thirds of the season, he was a very key component to our starting rotation. He gave us not only very good individual outings, but when you look at 125 to 135 innings that he pitched for us last year, that's a key role for us." Tavarez posted a 5.15 ERA in 34 games (23 starts) for the Sox last year.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsFriday 11/2, 4:36 PM CT
The Red Sox picked up Julian Tavarez's $3.85 million option on Friday, according to the AP. Thankfully, he should be used exclusively out the bullpen in 2008, as opposed to the starting role he was used primarily in this year.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 9/29, 8:40 PM CT
Julian Tavarez will start Sunday in place of Curt Schilling. Health reasons were not behind the change, as the Sox just want to line up Schilling for the second or third game of the AL division series, according to the AP.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 9/18, 10:12 AM CT
Julian Tavarez wants to be a starter in 2008, whether that's with the Red Sox or another team, according to the Boston Herald. "I want to be a starter wherever I go," said Tavarez. "I've never been a starter all year 'round, and that’s something I would like to do." Tavarez held a 5.12 ERA in 22 starts this year. The Sox hold a $3.8 million option on him for the 2008 season.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 8/1, 9:19 AM CT
Julian Tavarez will start for the Red Sox tonight in place of Kason Gabbard, who was traded in the Eric Gagne deal on Tuesday, according to the Boston Herald. This is not a permanent thing, as Tavarez will head back to the bullpen once Curt Schilling returns from the DL.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 6/17, 7:09 AM CT
Julian Tavarez tweaked his right hamstring when he stumbled in the seventh inning on Friday. He pitched to one more batter before calling it a night, according to the Boston Globe. "I'm fine," Tavarez said. "Just felt a little sting. Not a problem at all." At this point, it looks like he should be fine for Wednesday's scheduled start.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 6/11, 7:16 AM CT
Julian Tavarez has been pitching with a blistered middle finger. "[Josh ] Beckett would be on the DL with this," Tavarez said. He added that he pops the blister and dries it out by rubbing in some Red Bull and ground-up aspirin, according to the Boston Globe. He allowed three runs on six hits over six innings on Saturday, despite the problem. While he plans to keep pitching, his condition is something to keep tabs on.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/1, 9:06 AM CT
Julian Tavarez plans to get Daisuke Matsuzaka to teach him how to throw a cut fastball, according to the Boston Globe. "There are little things I want to learn. He's going to work with me twice a week on a cutter. That pitch has kept a lot of guys in baseball. Mike Timlin, Doug Jones. He says it's OK with him." Taverez holds a 7.58 ERA in his four starts this season.

The Boston Herald reports that Julian Tavarez is believed to be the leading candidate to open the season as the Red Sox closer, since Mike Timlin will begin the year on the disabled list. Tavarez is competing with Joel Pineiro, Brendan Donnelly and Devern Hansack, and an announcement should come later this week.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 3/21, 8:55 PM CT
The Red Sox are expected to anoint an official closer next week, according to the team's official site. Julian Tavarez, Joel Pineiro and Brendan Donnelly are the contenders with Mike Timlin headed for the DL, though a trade is a possibility as well.

With Mike Timlin expected to open the year on the DL, the Boston Herald is reporting that Julian Tavarez is the favorite to open the year as the closer. That said, manager Terry Francona has yet to make a formal announcement, so nothing is set in stone.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsMonday 2/19, 8:10 AM CT
Julian Tavarez has been held out of some drills early this spring, according to the Boston Globe. Tavarez has lingering soreness in his right ankle, which he hurt playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 12/31, 10:07 AM CT
The Boston Globe reports that it appears that Julian Tavarez will get the "greatest opportunity" to secure the closer job on the Red Sox. This flies in the face of other reports and seems unlikely based on Tavarez's overall lack of skill, so we don't put much stock in it. The Sox continue to pursue options outside the organization.
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 11/8, 10:13 AM CT
It appears unlikely that Julian Tavarez will get a chance to earn a spot in the Red Sox starting rotation in spring training, according to the Boston Herald. "It’s more than likely we’ll acquire another starting pitcher and Julian will be back in the bullpen," said GM Theo Epstein. "It’s nice to know we have that option."
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 9/10, 5:51 PM CT
Julian Tavarez made his third start for the Red Sox on Sunday and earned his first win of the season as a starter. Tavarez allowed five hits and three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts and two walks.

Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsSunday 9/3, 7:26 AM CT
Julian Tavarez likely will start Monday on short rest in place of the injured Curt Schilling, according to the Boston Globe. He tossed 64 pitches in three innings Thursday. "The only way it wouldn't be [Tavarez] is if something crazy happens [today]," manager Terry Francona said. "That's what we'd like to do, give him three days off in between. I don't know if we can stretch him out. Just because he threw [64] pitches, I don't know if he can automatically come back and throw 80, but maybe he can realistically get us deep enough into the game and give us a chance to win."
Julian Tavarez, P, Washington NationalsThursday 8/31, 10:29 PM CT
As expected, since David Wells was being dealt to the Padres, the Red Sox sent Julian Tavarez out to start Thursday's game. He worked only three innings, allowing five hits, three runs and three walks, while striking out three.
