The Diamondbacks signed Bob Wickman on Friday. He was designated for assignment by the Braves late last month, but the Diamondbacks are hoping he can add a little depth to their bullpen.

In a surprise move, the Braves designated Bob Wickman for assignment on Friday, according to the Braves website. "I just want to try something else," said Braves manager Bobby Cox. Wickman has 10 days to be traded or placed on waivers. Despite an ugly WHIP, he had been getting the job done as of late, holding a 2.84 ERA over his last seven appearances. Rafael Soriano figures to handle the ninth-inning duties for Atlanta going forward.

An MRI Thursday and CT scan taken Friday revealed that Bob Wickman has no structural damage in his sore right forearm. He was available for the evening's game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Wickman has been bothered by soreness in his forearm for a couple of weeks, but for now it looks like he'll be able to pitch through the problem.

Bob Wickman is experiencing lingering soreness in his right forearm and will undergo an MRI. He flew back to Atlanta on Thursday night. "There's always a chance something could be [seriously injured]," Wickman tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He's had some soreness for about two weeks.

"I've been trying to max it out and see if [the pain comes] back, and it's not coming back," said Wickman. "I want to be fully recovered." Barring a setback over the weekend, Wickman should come off the disabled list when eligible on Tuesday. He's been out with what he's called a knot in his upper back.

He has struggled in his last two outings, and manager Bobby Cox said Wickman's control problems were based on his inability to extend his arm and follow through with his pitches. Bob Wickman blew another save Sunday, giving up a two-run lead in the ninth at Colorado. Wickman walked three of the six batters he faced and also allowed an infield hit; the only reason he avoided a loss was because of Jeff Francouer's spectacular catch (with Tyler Yates on the mound) to end the inning. Wickman has now given up six runs (five earned) in his last three outings, walking six men in that span.

Bob Wickman was given Saturday off to rest after pitching four of the previous five games, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Wickman admitted he "had nothing" in the ninth inning Friday when he was brought in against the Rockies with a five-run lead, only to give up three runs and ask to be taken out. That followed his first blown save of the season on Wednesday. "He's been just about perfect," manager Bobby Cox said. "Nobody's completely perfect, but he's been the closest thing to it."

The Braves signed Bob Wickman to a one-year contract extension Wednesday. Wickman has converted 19 of 20 save opportunities dating back to June 30 and holds a microscopic 1.19 ERA since being traded to the Braves. He will presumably be the closer for the Braves again next year.
