Henry Owens, P, Florida MarlinsTuesday 11/11, 4:52 PM CT
Henry Owens has been suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, according to the AP. Owens didn't pitch at all in 2008 while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Our View: Owens figures to be a big part of the Marlins bullpen if he can come back healthy, so this is a blow. He might even have had a chance to close if the team doesn't hang on to Kevin Gregg.

Henry Owens, who underwent surgery last August to repair a torn supraspinatus in his right shoulder, wants to take the mound at some point in 2008. "I hope to get back sometime this season, that's my goal," Owens said in the Miami Herald. The right-hander held a 1.96 ERA in 22 games before getting cut, and he picked up four saves while serving as the closer for a short time.

Henry Owens was activated from the 15-day DL on Thursday, according to the AP. He was the Marlins' closer until tendinitis in his right shoulder placed him on the DL May 9. The great job Kevin Gregg did as closer while Owens was out, coupled with the acquisition of Armando Benitez will likely send Owens back to a setup role.

Henry Owens notched his second save of the year for the Marlins on Monday, tossing a perfect ninth inning against the Mets. Owens, who holds a 2.63 ERA in 12 appearances this year, struggled in his last save opportunity, so this strong outing gives him a little breathing room as the Marlins closer.
Henry Owens, P, Florida MarlinsMonday 4/23, 9:28 PM CT
Henry Owens failed miserably Monday in attempting to secure his role as the Marlins closer. He allowed a solo shot to Chipper Jones before giving up back-to-back doubles with two outs in the ninth. At that point, he was pulled for Renyel Pinto, who picked up his first save. Owens will have to step it up the next time out if he wants to keep the job.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that Henry Owens will get a chance to prove himself as the Marlins' closer. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he was "92 percent sure" who he'd use in the ninth inning but wouldn't name the player. However, it's obvious that Owens is the man. "[Monday night] in Houston when the game was tied in the ninth they said [Kevin] Gregg was going out if it stayed tied, and I was going out if we got the lead," Owens said. "That told me enough."

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said yesterday there will be an open competition between Henry Owens, Matt Lindstrom, Randy Messenger and Kevin Gregg and Taylor Tankersley to replace Jorge Julio as the closer, according to the Miami Herald. "We are going to see how it plays out," Gonzalez said. "At some point, we will say, `You're the guy.' I'm comfortable with the guys we have." Having picked up a save Monday, Owens likely is the front-runner, but only time will tell if he can lock down the job.

Owens has now worked five scoreless innings on the year, including one in each of the last three days.
