Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 8/8, 2:42 PM CT
Accrding to the Twitter page of A's beat writer Susan Slusser, Russ Springer has been claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays. Springer has a 4.10 ERA in 41.2 innings pitched with the A's this season.

Our View: According to the report, Springer was not traded, but was instead claimed straight off waivers. The A's have said that Springer deserves this at this point in his career, and he will be a nice addition to the Rays' bullpen.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 7/28, 6:18 PM CT
According to the Twitter page of St. Louis Cardinals' beat writer Joe Strauss, the team tried to get the A's to include relief pitcher Russ Springer in the Matt Holliday deal. The A's wanted the Cards to include another starting pitcher in the deal, but St. Louis turned them down.

Our View: The Cards and A's may revisit a deal for Springer, as St. Louis would like to bring in another right-handed relief pitcher. Springer was excellent with the Cards last season, and the teams are obviously experienced in dealing with one another. The Cardinals are going for it this season, so don't be shocked if something gets done before the deadline on Friday.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 3/29, 7:38 AM CT
Russ Springer will serve as the Athletics' main setup man, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Springer fired 45 strikeouts over 50.1 innings of relief with St. Louis last season, while maintaining a 1.13 WHIP. He is worth consideration for deeper leagues that feature middle men.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 1/29, 2:22 PM CT
Russ Springer has agreed to a one-year deal with the Athletics, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The 40-year-old vet held a 1.13 WHIP over 50.1 innings with St. Louis last season, and should prove to be a solid addition to Oakland's pen, assuming he can stay healthy.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 1/26, 4:40 PM CT
The Oakland A's are close to finalizing a one-year deal with reliever Russ Springer, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. An announcement is expected in the next few days.

Our View: Springer is 40 years old now, but he put together a fantastic season as a 39-year old with the Cardinals in 2008, finishing with a 2.32 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 50.1 innings. The Cards are planning to go younger in their bullpen, otherwise they probably wouldn't have let Springer go. This is a solid pick up for Oakland if Springer doesn't break down as he nears the end of his career.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 1/24, 9:39 AM CT
The Oakland A's and reliever Russ Springer are nearing a deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 1/22, 3:58 PM CT
Russ Springer is reportedly being courted by the A's, Twins, and Dodgers, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: 38-year old Springer was very solid for the Cardinals last season but really doesn't get enough work to impact fantasy rosters.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 1/22, 12:02 PM CT
Russ Springer is reportedly on the Twins' radar, according to the Star Tribune.

Our View: The Twins need a setup man with Pat Neshek likely to miss the entire 2009 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but the 40-year-old Springer is best suited for a seventh-inning role. The club is believed to be close to reeling in Eric Gagne for the eighth inning spot.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 1/20, 9:58 AM CT
Russ Springer is on the Athletics' radar, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View: He is 40 years old, but held a solid 1.13 WHIP over 50.1 innings of relief with the Cardinals in 2008, and Oakland is among a handful of teams interested in adding him to the bullpen.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 1/16, 7:28 PM CT
Russ Springer does not appear to be in the Cardinals' plans for 2009, according to MLB.com. The clubs has decided to embrace younger pitchers Chris Perez and Jason Motte for the right side of their bullpen in the upcoming season.

Our View: Springer was one of the Cards' most reliable relievers last year, posting a 2.32 ERA in 70 appearances. He'll certainly get an offer from someone, but it's currently unclear where it will come from.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 12/4, 9:27 AM CT
The Dodgers are doing research on Trevor Hoffman and Russ Springer is also believed to be in the mix, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View: The Dodgers have concerns about 38-year-old closer Takashi Saito, who missed two months last season with a serious elbow injury. Springer would be a solid target as he held a 1.13 WHIP over 50.1 innings of relief in 2008, and the Cardinals did not offer him arbitration, so the Dodgers would not have to lose draft picks to sign him.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 12/2, 8:02 AM CT
Russ Springer is likely done in St. Louis as the team declined to offer him salary arbitration, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak said, "Obviously, Russ did a great job for us the past two years. But one place we do have plenty of depth is on the right side of the bullpen. Up until this point we haven't been able to address any of our glaring needs, and right now those remain our priority."

Our View: Springer held a strong 1.13 WHIP over 50.1 innings of relief for the Cardinals in 2008, but the club wants to focus on adding some solid lefties for the bullpen, as well as upgrading their middle infield.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 12/1, 7:59 PM CT
The Cardinals will not offer arbitration to reliever Russ Springer, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Houston Atros have said to have interest in the Springer but retirement might be an option also.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 11/30, 10:02 AM CT
The Astros have displayed interest in Russ Springer, according to their official team website.

Our View: Springer qualifies as a Type-A free agent, so if the Cardinals offer him arbitration and he declines, the Astros will likely not pursue him unless they want to lose their draft picks.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 11/17, 10:39 AM CT
In an effort to shore up their middle relief, the Philadelphia Phillies are said to be looking at hurlers Juan Cruz, Doug Brocail and Russ Springer, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Springer was a solid performer out of the bullpen for St. Louis. He can't go much longer than one inning, but he did post a 1.13 WHIP and 2.32 ERA with a 8.05 K/9 rate in 50.1 innings. He may be the least expensive option of the trio.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 10/18, 8:53 AM CT
Russ Springer has decided he would like to play again next season, and a return to the Cardinals would be his preference, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The 40-year-old Springer was contemplating retirement, but has decided to resume mound duties. He was very good for St. Louis last year, posting a 2.32 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. His fantasy value was, and will continue to be limited to leagues that use holds.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 9/20, 6:03 PM CT
Russ Springer is considering retirement, according to MLB.com. Springer said, "Physically, I feel like I could still play a couple years even if I wanted to. I still love playing the game. But it's one of those things where, as soon as the season is over, I'm going to go home, take a week or so, and then sit down and talk to my family about it and make a decision if I want to play or not."

Our View: Springer will turn 40 in November, but holds a terrific 2.25 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 48 innings of relief. Springer would be retiring to spend more time with his family, namely his young son Jake, who is autistic.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 4/21, 3:56 PM CT
The Cardinals activated reliever Russ Springer (elbow) on Monday and optioned infielder Rico Washington to Triple-A, MLB.com confirms.

Our View: Springer was outstanding out of the bullpen in 2007, but we need to see him work a few innings before he'll look attractive in NL-only leagues.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 4/20, 10:14 PM CT
The Cardinals are holding off activating reliever Russ Springer (elbow) from the disabled list. The staff wants to see how he feels after throwing and performs in another simulated effort Monday.

Our View: Springer, who was shut down for a week due to a nerve problem in his elbow, threw to hitters for the first time on Saturday.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 4/19, 12:57 PM CT
Cardinals' pitcher Russ Springer let it all hang out on the mound this morning and has reported he feels great, according to MLB.com. Springer has been out of the bullpen with nerve inflammation in his right elbow, but the reliever is appears to be back in form and ready to contribute.

Our View: Springer faced hitters Cesar Izturis, Brian Baron, and Jason LaRue in a simulated session this morning and didn't hold back, trying each and every pitch in his arsenal. Springer is confident he is ready, and manager Tony LaRussa believes he is close to return. "We'll try and figure out what's the next thing that will give him a chance to keep moving forward," said LaRussa. "We'll talk about it. We'll wait until tomorrow and see how he feels. You look at the alternatives and pick one." Springer could do a short stint in the minors or be shoved right into action. Stay tuned.

Russ Springer (inflamed nerve in elbow) threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday and is looking forward to being activated from the DL on Monday, this according to MLB.com. "Everything is fine. All my pitches worked. I'm right where I want to be."

Our View: Springer is coming off his best season (8-1, 2.18 ERA, 0.91 WHIP) and will add a great arm to a Cardinals staff that is off to a solid start in the new year.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 4/16, 11:49 AM CT
Russ Springer is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Thursday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is on the shelf due to nerve irritation in his elbow, but expects to be ready to come off the 15-day DL when he's eligible at the end of the Cardinals' home stand.

Our View: He will fight for playing time out of the Cardinals' pen when he returns.

"He, along with Izzy (Jason Isringhausen) and Ryan Franklin, represent a solid trio at the back end of our bullpen." Springer posted a 2.18 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 76 appearances in 2007. Although it's unclear how much Springer will receive in the deal, he probably could have received more had he waited and entered the free agent market.
Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 4/8, 8:05 AM CT
The Cardinals would like to get Russ Springer more involved in their bullpen, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. However, Springer still hasn't figured out his mechanics after missing much of camp with a strained left oblique. Russ Springer, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 12/8, 6:06 PM CT
The Cardinals signed Russ Springer to a one-year, $1.75 million deal Friday, according to the AP. Springer held a 3.47 ERA and 1.04 WHIP for the Astros this past season. "He allows us to be more versatile out of the bullpen and adds another veteran presence to the relief corps."
