Shawn Riggans, C, New York MetsThursday 2/11, 5:45 PM CT
In a press release on Thursday, the Mets announced the signing of catcher Shawn Riggans to a minor league deal.

Our View: Riggans will receive an invite to spring training as part of the deal and will try for a backup catching position with the Mets. Last season he hit just .143 with a homer in seven games with the Rays.

Shawn Riggans has been recalled from his rehab assignment, and was optioned to Triple-A Durham, according to TSN. He has been recovering from a shoulder injury.

Our View: The 29-year-old catcher is a career .208 hitter in the majors, and holds no fantasy value while providing organizational depth in the minors.

According to the St. Petersburg Times, Shawn Riggans will miss another month after a setback in his rehab start for a sore shoulder.

Our View: Riggans won't need surgery, but he needs to rest for three weeks to see if the inflammation subsides. He has been out since April 10th and likely won't return until at least mid-June.

According to the Tampa Tribune, catcher Shawn Riggans experienced a setback in his shoulder rehab and won't be available for quite some time. There is no timetable for his return.

Our View: Riggans was originally hoping to be back on Sunday, but after leaving yesterday's game with shoulder stiffness the problem looks to be much bigger than the team had expected. Riggans has been held to just four at-bats all year.

Shawn Riggans has been placed on the 15-day DL by the Rays, according to the Associated Press. He is dealing with right shoulder tendinitis. The club purchased the contract of catcher Michel Hernandez from Triple-A Durham as the adjoining move.

Our View: The DL move is retroactice to April 10. Riggans hit a homer in his only game this season, but his fantasy value is limited as a backup catcher.

Catcher Shawn Riggans' knee has not recovered enough to be placed on the World Series roster, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Ideally, the Rays would have Riggans as their backup catcher on the roster. However, he has not fully recovered from his September knee surgery.

Shawn Riggans, who underwent knee surgery in September, is hopeful to return to the diamond if the Rays advance to the ALCS, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Our View: The Rays say he could be ready, but is yet to get into a full squat. Riggans would serve as Dioner Navarro's backup if slated for the ALCS roster.

After undergoing surgery in his knee last week, Shawn Riggans was placed on the 15 day DL, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: By placing Riggans on the DL, it allows the Rays to have a little more flexibility with their playoff roster. Michael Hernandez will now serve as the Rays backup catcher.

Updating an earlier report, Shawn Riggans will undergo surgery this afternoon to clear out an infection in the bursa sac in his injured right knee, according to The Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Riggans will likely miss at least the next two weeks, which means we have probably seen the last of him for the regular season. This likely means that Dioner Navarro will get a few more starts down the stretch with Michel Hernandez serving as the backup.

Tampa catcher Shawn Riggans is out for an indefinite period of time with a swollen right knee that may be caused by an infected bursa sac, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: Riggans holds no fantasy value, as he is sporting a .222 average with six home runs and 24 RBI.
Shawn Riggans, C, New York MetsThursday 5/15, 10:16 PM CT
Shawn Riggans hit his third home run of the season on Thursday as he scored two runs, had two RBI and produced two hits for the Rays.

Our View: Riggans continues to split time with Dioner Navarro, and with tonight's effort he is hitting .250 in 48 AB. He doesn't figure to overtake Navarro but he has been a serviceable second catcher in AL Only leagues.

With Dioner Navarro on the DL, Shawn Riggans should get the bulk of the starts at catcher for the Rays over the next couple weeks. He's a pretty good hitter and is worth a pickup in AL-only play.

Shawn Riggans will get in some swings on Wednesday and could spend some time catching balls in the bullpen, the Tampa Tribune reports. He is day-to-day with a bruised left hand.

Testing revealed that Shawn Riggans's left hand is not broken, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He suffered a bruise when he was hit by a pitch and will return to action as soon as he can handle the pain. Riggans appears to be in the lead to back up Dioner Navarro.

Shawn Riggans was hit on his left hand by a pitch Saturday, according to the St. Petersburg Times. "It's just real upsetting," Riggans said. "I was starting to get into somewhat of a rhythm, and (this) could possibly set me back a bit." He sustained at least a bruised hand, and it's possible he broke it. More should be known today, but an extended absence could push him out as the top candidate to back up Dioner Navarro.

Skipper Joe Maddon confirmed that Shawn Riggans is the top candidate for the backup catcher's job but didn't hold back from offering the team's third option, 12-year veteran Mike Difelice, accolades, according to SPTimes.com. "I can really understand why he's made such an impact on all the teams that he's played for," Maddon said. "Well-spoken, well-thought-out and he's got this professional sternness about him as a catcher that I really like." Riggans has not been bothered by the elbow that prematurely ended his 2007 season.

Shawn Riggans is the favorite to come away with the Rays' backup catcher job, according to the Tampa Tribune. He'll face competition from non-roster veterans Mike DiFelice and Josh Paul. Riggans has hit just .154 in his brief stints in the big leagues, but he's put up some decent numbers in the minors. He could have some AL-only value if Dioner Navarro gets hurt.

Shawn Riggans is working on a new throwing motion as he recovers from right elbow tendonitis. "He's been on a throwing program over at the minor-league complex, but we wanted to see him in person just to see if the things we had spoken about were happening," manager Joe Maddon told the Tampa Tribune. "We're trying to get him to throw with no step to help increase accuracy and take a lot of the load off of his elbow, and he did a nice job with that today." The Devil Rays hope to have a good idea of when Riggans will return after he throws again over the weekend.

Shawn Riggans, C, New York MetsThursday 5/24, 8:17 PM CT
The Devil Rays recalled Shawn Riggans from Triple-A Durham on Thursday to replace the injured Josh Paul on their roster. He was hitting .295 with four homers and 14 RBI with Durham this season. With Paul out and Dioner Navarro struggling at the plate, Riggans should see some playing time with the Rays.

Riggans has a hit and a walk in his only two plate appearances since being recalled earlier this month. He hit .293 with 11 homers in 115 games for Triple-A Durham this year.
