Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 1/18, 11:41 AM CT
Manager Jim Riggleman listed Matt Capps as the favorite to open 2010 as his team's closer, according to MASN Sports.

Our View: Washington has several options, having also added Brian Bruney and Eddie Guardado, but it looks like Capps should be the man as long as he looks alright in spring training. With an at least slightly revamped roster, the Nationals could provide Capps with a decent number of save opportunities this upcoming season.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsThursday 12/24, 11:39 AM CT
The Washington Nationals have inked Matt Capps to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.com. The deal is expected to be worth $3.5 million.

Our View: The decision came down to the Nats, Mets, and Cubs. The Nats were the best shot for him to get a closing job and that likely factored into the one-year deal. He will be eligible for arbitration next offseason. Fantasy-wise, he could be a nice steal on draft day if he re-discover his pre-2009 form.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/23, 11:29 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Matt Capps is apparently not close to a deal with the Washington Nationals, according to Bill Ladson on Twitter.

Our View: A deal was expected to be reached by this time, but Capps' agent is still wheeling and dealing and apparently the talks have hit a snag. The timetable now suggests that Capps will make a decision right after Christmas. Stay tuned.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/23, 5:51 PM CT
According to ESPN.com, the Nationals are closing in on a one-year deal with free agent reliever Matt Capps.

Our View: Capps has been a hot commodity this offseason, and it's surprising to see that the lowly Nationals are the ones closest to reeling him in. He is expected to make a decision later tonight, and if he does sign with the Nats, he would instantly become the favorite to close. He had 27 saves a year ago, but his ERA was a bloated 5.80, so he remains a risky fantasy option.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 12/22, 1:06 PM CT
Reliever Matt Capps is being lobbied by former teammate John Grabow to join the Cubs, according to MLB.com. Capps is expected to make his decision between the Nationals and the Cubs by Wednesday night.

Our View: Capps would likely get a shot to close in Washington, but the Cubs are obviously expected to be more in line to contend next season. Expect a decision soon.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 12/22, 11:14 AM CT
Free agent Matt Capps will decide between offers from the Cubs and Nationals by Wednesday night, according to MLB.com's William Ladson.

Our View: On one hand, he'd be the favorite to close in Washington, a role he wouldn't get a chance at in Chicago given Carlos Marmol's presence. On the other hand, he'd get a chance to play for a potential contender in Chicago, something that is quite unlikely for Washington. Fantasy owners will be hoping he opts for the Nationals, so stay tuned.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 12/21, 7:32 PM CT
The Nationals are making a "big push" for free agent reliever Matt Capps, according to ESPN.

Our View: Seemingly every club in baseball is interested in Capps, but Washington is one of the few places where he would actually be able to close. That could make them not just a serious bidder, but the favorites. Stay tuned.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 12/20, 11:14 AM CT
The Cubs are in the market for a right-handed setup man, and Matt Capps is on their radar, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: There are reportedly 16 different teams interested in Capps, but his agent, Paul Kinzer, has said that the Cubs and Nationals are the two favorites at this point. However, Capps has expressed a desire to close this season, and that's an opportunity that only the Nats are willing to give him, so they may have a leg up on the Cubs.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 12/15, 7:30 PM CT
According to Jerry Crasnick on Twitter, there are now 16 interested parties in the Matt Capps sweepstakes.

Our View: Four of the interested teams see Capps as their closer for next season, so his fantasy value will likely depend on if he lands with one of those. Previously expected to be interested, the Cardinals have dropped out of the race, so there are some new faces in the list of 16. Stay tuned as the market for this reliever is hot.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 12/14, 2:34 PM CT
Among the teams interested in Matt Capps are the Rangers, Rockies, Marlins, Cardinals, Cubs and Diamondbacks, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: So as expected, the hard-throwing 26-year-old righty is not lacking for suitors. With that kind of interest, expect him to land somewhere soon.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 12/14, 11:02 AM CT
Matt Capps has drawn interest from "seven or eight teams" since being non-tendered by the Pirates on Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The Diamondbacks and Cubs are among them. While its not surprising that many teams are interested in the 26-year-old Capps, he wasn't non-tendered without cause. In 54.1 innings last season, he posted an ugly 5.80 ERA.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 12/13, 1:05 PM CT
The Cubs have expressed interest in free agent Matt Capps, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Capps is still just 26 years old and has three years of closing experience, though he struggled mightily last season. Should get latch on with Chicago, he'd join Angel Guzman as a setup man for closer Carlos Marmol.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 12/12, 11:10 PM CT
The Pirates have non-tendered long-time closer Matt Capps, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Phil Dumatrait was also not offered a contract by the team.

Our View: The move is surprising, considering the club had said earlier this offseason that he would be their closer in 2010 barring a trade. His 5.80 ERA from 2009 must have been too large of a hurdle.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 9/28, 12:13 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that the Pirates plan to use Matt Capps in the closer's role in 2010 unless he is traded in the offseason. Capps has struggled in 2009, posting a 5.91 ERA and blowing five saves.

Our View: The Pirates may try to move Capps during the winter, but they may not be able to get any value for him after his awful 2009 season. His ERA is at 7.30 since July 12, and he hasn't been dominant at all as the team's closer. He may be better suited for a setup role, but if he stays in Pittsburgh he will be closing again next season.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 9/27, 4:54 PM CT
Matt Capps allowed three runs (two earned) in the ninth inning against the Dodgers on Sunday, but his offense bailed him out. The Buccos responded with four in the bottom of the frame en route to a 6-5, walk-off win.

Our View: Capps earned the win Sunday, but his record now stands at an unsightly 4-8. He also owns an ERA just below 6.00 on the season and is a risky fantasy play, even if you really need saves.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 8/9, 2:42 PM CT
Matt Capps was ejected on Sunday after beaning the Cardinals' Albert Pujols.

Our View: The pitch was his first after allowing a two-run home run to Skip Schumaker. Although obviously intentional, no warnings had been issued previously, and he is unlikely to be suspended.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 7/27, 4:51 PM CT
The Pirates are talking to several MLB clubs about closer Matt Capps, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Capps' rights can be retained two more years through arbitration, and he could be hard for a team to acquire, unless they want to overpay. He seems likely to remain in Pittsburgh.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 7/3, 9:30 AM CT
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Twins are interested in trading for Pirates' pitcher Matt Capps. The Twins may also be interested in second baseman Freddy Sanchez and pitcher John Grabow.

Our View: The Pirates have demonstrated that they are not shy about trading away their players, and Capps could improve the Twins' bullpen. A move like that would kill his fantasy value, so Capps' owners should monitor him until the trade deadline.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsThursday 5/28, 8:33 AM CT
Matt Capps has avoided a trip to the DL with his bruised right elbow, and is not expected to miss much more time, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He believes he made an "amazing" recovery and he said, "If you'd told me Monday I could pitch by the coming weekend, I would have said you were nuts."

Our View: Capps feels he is good enough to return to the hill, and fantasy owners could get the closer back as early as this weekend when the Pirates battle the Astros at PNC Park.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 5/27, 9:11 AM CT
The Pirates will likely wait until Friday before deciding whether or not to place Matt Capps on the 15-day DL with his deeply bruised right elbow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: He could not throw Tuesday, and likely will not throw today either due to soreness and swelling. Capps is optimistic he will be able to avoid a trip to the DL, and believes the club has done a good job of icing the ailment.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/26, 9:42 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, Matt Capps will be further evaluated after being struck on his pitching elbow by a line drive during Monday's game, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: His X-rays came back negative, but he will be further examined by Cubs' orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stephen Gryzlo at Wrigley Field before today's game. The Pirates' closer should be held out of fantasy lineups until further notice.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/26, 6:59 AM CT
Matt Capps exited Monday's game against Chicago when struck on his pitching elbow by a Geovany Soto line drive, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He was taken to a hospital for X-rays, and his status is yet to be updated. Sean Burnett replaced him as the Pirates' closer when Capps went down.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 5/20, 9:32 PM CT
Matt Capps picked up his eighth save of the season on Wednesday as the Pirates beat the Nationals 2-1. Capps pitched a solid ninth inning, allowing no runs on one hit.

Our View: Capps has been anything but reliable this season, but he has been solid since his last blown save. Continue to play him in all leagues unless you are deep at closer. Now may be a good time to trade him since he has successfully saved two straight games.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 5/15, 9:25 PM CT
Matt Capps blew the save for the Pirates on Friday as he allowed three runs in the ninth inning. The Pirates fell to the Rockies 3-1.

Our View: Capps came back earlier this week after a short layoff, but it didn't do him much good. He is a risky fantasy play at this point, so we will have to see what the Pirates do with him going forward.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/12, 6:54 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Matt Capps is available to pitch on Tuesday night.

Our View: Capps has been sidelined since May 4th with right elbow discomfort, but has been cleared to pitch. The Pirates could use him right now, as their bullpen has been bad this season. Should there be a save opportunity tonight it would likely go to Capps.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/11, 9:29 AM CT
Matt Capps threw a pain-free bullpen session Sunday, and he has been given the green light to return to the Pirates' bullpen on Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He has been recovering from right elbow discomfort.

Our View: He should resume his closer's role upon his return tomorrow, when the Pirates battle the Cardinals at PNC Park. Capps should be fine to pencil back into fantasy lineups.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/9, 9:05 AM CT
Matt Capps, who is recovering from a bruised bone in his right elbow, could be cleared to pitch if he fares well during his bullpen session today - but manager John Russell suggested that he may wait until Tuesday to employ Capps in the Pirates' bullpen, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The team is off Monday, which would give the closer another day to recover. John Grabow and Tyler Yates will continue to handle the closer's role until further notice.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 5/8, 8:47 AM CT
Matt Capps, who is recovering from a bruised bone in right elbow, played catch without any issues Thursday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Capps is slated to throw off a mound today at Citi Field prior to the Pirates' battle with the Mets. John Grabow and Tyler Yates will handle the closer's role until Capps is ready to return.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 5/6, 8:00 PM CT
Matt Capps, who is dealing with a sore elbow, will throw off of a mound on Friday and hopes to be available for Saturday's game against the Mets, according to MLB.com. Capps said he felt he could have thrown on Wednesday.

Our View: This means Capps will be unavailable for the abbreviated two-game series going on in St. Louis. The closer has given up seven runs in his last 2.2 innings and taken two losses in the process. His ERA also jumped from 0.00 to 7.56. We still have faith that he can be a serviceable closer, and hopefully he will benefit from some additional rest.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/5, 5:17 PM CT
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates' closer Matt Capps will be out until the weekend with minor discomfort in his right elbow.

Our View: A recent exam failed to reveal any ligament or structural damage, which is good news, but something is off with Capps. His ERA is up to 7.56 and he has two losses on the season, so the Pirates feel it's best to give him a rest for a few days.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/4, 11:39 PM CT
Matt Capps got hammered tonight, giving up four runs in his one inning to blow the save for the Pirates. His ERA ballooned to 7.56 after the outing.

Our View: That ERA is way too high for a closer, but he really hasn't been terrible this season. He has five saves, but he also has two losses, a bad number for this early in the year. He can still produce saves, but if he continues to struggle you may want to look at other options.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 4/17, 9:16 PM CT
Closer Matt Capps worked a spotless ninth inning on Friday night to earn his third save of the season. He has yet to allow a run and has served up only one hit over 3.2 innings this season.

Our View: We have no doubts about Capps' abilities at this point. The closer just needs to prove that he can stay healthy, and hopefully the Pirates will give him enough chances throughout 2009.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 4/6, 8:50 PM CT
Matt Capps allowed one hit but no runs in the ninth inning of Monday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals. He recorded one strikeout while getting three outs on 15 pitches.

Our View: Capps should be in line for a lot of save opportunities this season as the Pirates don't figure to win many games by more than three runs. He's not a strikeout pitcher, but he exhibits enough control and poise to make for an effective closer.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 3/31, 4:40 PM CT
Matt Capps allowed four runs while only recording one out on Tuesday. He gave up four hits and a walk before being yanked.

Our View: Capps was shelled today, but when healthy still projects as a reliable fantasy closer. He doesn't have the strikeout rate that many closers have, but his K-BB ratio is phenomenal. Last year he only walked five batter in 53+ innings/
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 2/25, 5:12 PM CT
Matt Capps did not look sharp on Wednesday in his one inning of work. He didn't allow any runs, but he walked three batters while striking out just one.

Our View: Capps is expected to be the Pirates closer again in 2009, so he won't have to get used to pitching in the second inning like he did on Wednesday.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/10, 12:56 PM CT
The Mets landed record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez but may not be done adding to their bullpen as Matt Capps is reportedly on their radar, according to Sports Illustrated.

Our View: The Mets would employ him as a setup man, giving them one of the best closer-setup tandems in the league. Capps' fantasy value would take a hit, but would be a strong step to finally push the Mets into the playoffs in 2009.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 12/10, 8:38 AM CT
Matt Capps is reportedly on the Cardinals' radar, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Capps looks to be an option in case the club is unable to reel in a higher-profile closer, such as Brian Fuentes or JJ Putz. Capps only registered 21 saves while playing for a weak Pirates club in 2008, but maintained a stellar 0.97 WHIP.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 9/20, 9:22 PM CT
Matt Capps nailed down his 20th save of the season in Saturday's 6-4 win over Houston.

Our View: Capps notched his first save since September 3rd.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 9/3, 9:35 PM CT
Matt Capps collected his 19th save of the season Wednesday as the Pirates beat the Reds 6-5.

Our View: This is Capps second save in as many nights. Look for him to remain the closer for the remainder of the season.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsThursday 8/28, 7:57 AM CT
Matt Capps has added a 12-6 curve to his arsenal of pitches, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: He auditioned the new pitch with favorable results Wednesday against the Cubs as he froze Ryan Theriot on a third strike. He has not allowed a hit or earned run over two innings since returning from his bout with bursitis (both outings were losses so he did not have an opportunity for a save).
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/23, 12:30 PM CT
As expected, Matt Capps has been activated from the 15-day DL Saturday following his recovery from bursitis in his right shoulder, according to the AP. The Pirates optioned pitcher Romulo Sanchez to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the roster.

Our View: Capps should resume his role as the Pirates' closer, and is worth returning to lineups for the new fantasy week, assuming he doesn't struggle.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/23, 8:17 AM CT
Matt Capps, who has recovered from bursitis in his right shoulder, will be activated today, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Manager John Russell said, "He's passed all the rehab tests, so he's ready to go."

Our View: He should resume his role as the Pirates' closer, and is worth returning to lineups for the new fantasy week.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 8/22, 2:45 PM CT
Matt Capps rejoins the Pirates in Milwaukee for a three-game series against the Brewers, and is expected to be activated from the DL prior to Saturday's game, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He has been recovering from bursitis in his right shoulder.

Our View: He should resume his role as the Pirates' closer, and is worth returning to fantasy lineups.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 8/19, 8:23 AM CT
Pirates closer Matt Capps has shed 15 pounds on his rehab assignment and admitted that his weight helped contribute to his shoulder problems, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I think it affected my throwing, my ability to be at my best, and I've learned from this," he said.

Our View: Capps will be activated from the disabled list on Friday and will resume his role as the team's closer, sans the extra weight.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 8/18, 1:03 PM CT
Matt Capps is expected to be activated from the DL Friday following his bout with a bursitis in his right shoudler, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Capps will throw at Double-A Altoona Wednesday, serve in the bullpen Thursday, and then return to the Pirates Friday, assuming there isn't a setback. He has been solid this season, and should resume his role as the Pirates' closer upon his return.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/16, 3:22 PM CT
Pittsburgh closer Matt Capps will throw two innings on Sunday in his rehab assignment, and the team will then consider what the next course of action is, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Capps will likely be with the club next week, barring a setback. He was having a nice year for fantasy owners, and should resume closing upon his return.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 8/15, 8:09 AM CT
Matt Capps, who is recovering from bursitis in his right shoulder, threw a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts in his second rehab appearance with Double-A Altoona, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Capps will make a weekend appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis, then one more with Altoona Tuesday before the next step is determined. He could return to Pittsburgh as some point next week, and should resume his closer's role.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 8/11, 6:25 PM CT
Matt Capps (shoulder bursitis) will throw one inning on Tuesday for Double-A Altoona, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Capps made two appearances for the Gulf Coast Pirates allowing an unearned run in two innings, and appears on track to join the Pirates at some point in the next 7-10, barring a setback.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 8/8, 12:10 PM CT
Matt Capps, who is recovering from bursitis in his right shoulder, has completed his workouts in the Gulf Coast League, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He will make his next rehab appearance Tuesday for either Triple-A Indianapolis or Double-A Altoona.

Our View: He remains on pace to return to the Pirates' bullpen by September 1, if not sooner.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/2, 8:36 AM CT
Pirates closer Matt Capps will throw a simulated game today and if he feels well, will start a rehab assignment next weekend, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Capps has performed well as the team's closer and fantasy owners should be happy that he'll be back soon. However, with the purging of the team's roster, how many opportunities he'll receive to close out games is a question mark.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 7/21, 7:48 AM CT
Matt Capps, who has been on the DL since July 2 with right shoulder bursitis, had his first throwing session Sunday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The outing consisted of 25 tosses from 90 feet, and 50 from 60 feet.

Our View: He experienced no issues following the session, but the team will continue to be cautious with him. There remains no set target date for a return to pitching off a mound, but the general timetable of eight weeks to return to the Pirates has not been changed.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 7/6, 11:52 PM CT
Matt Capps flew to Florida on Sunday to start his rehab on his sore shoulder according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Our View: Capps remains hopeful that he will pitch again this season but that won't happen before September.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 7/2, 6:15 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Matt Capps has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right shoulder bursitis and an internal rotational deficit, according to the AP. The team recalled outfielder Steve Pearce from Triple-A Indianapolis as an adjoining move.

Our View: Capps is expected to miss around two months of action, but he will not need to undergo surgery. Tyler Yates and Damaso Marte are the top candidates to handle the closer role while Capps is out.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 7/2, 5:07 PM CT
Matt Capps will be out of action for around eight weeks due to a shoulder injury (bursitis and tightness), according to the AP. GM Neal Huntington said the 24-year-old closer will go on a rehab program for around four weeks, then take another four weeks to get back into pitching shape, and he added, "We’re going through a tough stretch right now. Matt’s a gamer. We know he’s going to be back."

Our View: Capps converted his first 15 save opportunities before blowing one on June 20. That started a rough stretch for the closer, who blew five of his last seven save opportunities. Tyler Yates and Damaso Marte are the top candidates to handle the closer role while Capps is out.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 7/2, 7:49 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Ken Griffey Jr.'s two-run home run off Matt Capps in the ninth inning on Monday was the right-handers fourth blown save in a three-week span. "I've looked at tape from early in the season and from [recently] and nothing really looked different with my mechanics," Capps said. "Nothing feels different." He paused. "The pressure's on," he said. "I've got to perform. Nobody knows that better than me."

Our View: Capps has recorded 17 saves this season, but his peripherals don't represent the prototypical ninth inning option. His 6.47 K rate and 8.48 H/9 are far from dominating.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 6/30, 11:10 PM CT
Matt Capps allowed two runs on two hits and suffered his third loss of the season as the Reds rallied to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night.

Our View: The Pirates closer converted his first 15 save chances this year before blowing his first on June 10. Capps now has blown four of his last six chances.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsThursday 6/12, 1:30 PM CT
Manager John Russell stated that he will rest closer Matt Capps for Thursday's finale against the Nationals, according to MLB.com. Capps has pitched in four games in as many days, and Russell doesn't want to push him one more day.

Our View: Capps has nailed down 16 saves, which ranks fourth highest in the NL, with a 0.98 WHIP. Russell will go with Tyler Yates, Damaso Marte, and John Grabow for the late-inning duties. Any of the three could be used in a save situation, and who gets the call will be dictated by the progression of the late innings.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 6/11, 9:50 PM CT
Matt Capps pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Nationals to pick up his 16th save of the season.

Our View: Capps doesn't get much publicity since he toils for the Pirates, but dating back to the start of last season he has a 2.36 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP and 33 saves. Not many have better all-around numbers than that.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/17, 3:13 PM CT
Matt Capps claimed his 10th save of the season on Saturday, as he helped Pittsburgh edge the Cubs 7-6. His save wasn't pretty though, as he allowed one run on two hits in the ninth inning (with one strikeout).

Our View: Capps remains a quality fantasy closer, and has nailed down a save in 10 of the Pirates' 22 wins so far in 2008.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 5/9, 7:09 PM CT
Matt Capps recorded his eighth save in as many opportunities on Thursday striking out one and walking one in his single frame of work.

Our View: Capps K Rate is down from last year, but his numbers are in line with what owners expected heading into 2008. Capps will continue to get opportunities. When the Pirates win, they don't win by much.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsFriday 4/4, 2:55 PM CT
Matt Capps signed a two-year contract with the Pirates on Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The deal buys out the closer's first year of arbitration. We're surprised they didn't hammer out a longer contract, but, hey, it's a start.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 3/5, 1:13 PM CT
The Pirates had been in discussions with Matt Capps about a long-term deal, but those talks have faded, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "I'm not worried about it," Capps says. "I'll just keep working hard and pitching well, and things will take care of themselves. I don't get the idea that any doors are closed." The closer will receive a standard one-year contract soon.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSunday 8/26, 7:07 AM CT
Matt Capps was expected to get Saturday off after working the two previous days, but nonetheless Jim Tracy dialed him up when the Pirates had a save situation in the ninth. Capps converted, working a scoreless inning despite allowing two hits. Look for him to sit out Sunday's game even if Pittsburgh has a late lead to protect.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 6/18, 5:04 PM CT
Matt Capps had his suspension cut from four to three games on Monday, according to the AP. He's being punished for hitting Prince Fielder with a pitch on May 5. Capps will sit out the Pirates' three-game series against the Mariners, which begins on Tuesday. Damaso Marte and Shawn Chacon are expected to handle the ninth-inning duties while Capps is unavailable.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 6/16, 9:47 AM CT
Matt Capps had his appeal of a four-game suspension heard on June 8. He's still waiting for the outcome, though, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "At some point in time, somebody's going to say something," manager Jim Tracy said. A response won't come this weekend, so he'll be remain available Saturday and Sunday.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 6/9, 9:18 AM CT
Matt Capps was scheduled to have his appeal of a four-game suspsension heard Friday. However, it was rescheduled until Monday or Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That means he'll be able to pitch through the weekend before finding out exactly how long he'll be suspended for hitting Prince Fielder with a pitch.
Matt Capps, P, Washington NationalsMonday 6/4, 10:49 PM CT
Matt Capps will have his appeal of his four-game suspension for hitting the Brewers' Prince Fielder with a pitch heard on Friday, according to the AP. Salomon Torres will be the closer while Capps is out, despite blowing each of his last two save opportunities. Manager Jim Tracy said, "We need Salomon Torres, point blank.
