Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 3/1, 4:44 PM CT
Geovany Soto did not work out Monday while down with the flu, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: The young catcher looks to be day-to-day. He was a grave disappointment last season while coming off a good 2008 campaign, but he is not being pushed for the starting gig with Chicago in spring training.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 2/16, 3:05 PM CT
Geovany Soto says he lost 40 pounds this offseason because he was "fat," and not because he stopped taking steroids, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Soto hit just .218 with 11 home runs in 2009 after batting .285 with 23 round-trippers in his rookie of the year winning 2008 season. Whatever the reason for his precipitous drop off in power and average, 2010 is a make-or-break season for the formerly burly backstop.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 1/16, 8:32 AM CT
Geovany Soto has lost 40 pounds since the end of the 2009 season, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: The 2008 National League rookie of the year thinks shedding some of his extra bulk will ensure that 2010 is not a repeat of his disastrous 2009 season. While that's a good thought, you have to wonder why he hit so well in 2008 with the extra heft. Regardless, the status quo won't be acceptable for Soto next season after he hit just .218 last year. He's probably still worth a late round gamble in most formats, just know that making him your starting catcher is an extremely risky proposition.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 10/3, 2:47 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 2-for-2 with two RBI on Saturday in the Cubs' 5-0 win over the Diamondbacks at home.

Our View: The two-hit day upped his average to a still miserable .220. His huge regression from 2008 has been on the extreme end of things, meaning he's probably not quite this bad, but he's probably much closer to this player than the one he was in 2008. His 23 home runs last season were out of nowhere after he displayed very little power in the minors, and he will remain a lower-end option in mixed leagues for the foreseeable future.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 9/12, 3:41 PM CT
Geovany Soto had a nice afternoon on Saturday, but the Cubs fell to the Reds by a score of 7-5. Soto went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.

Our View: Soto has been better as of late, but it's too little, too late for him to save his 2009 season. It has to be encouraging that he is starting to hit the ball, but his 2008 season is very much in the past.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 9/6, 3:50 PM CT
Geovany Soto was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI in the Cubs' 4-2 loss to the Mets on Sunday.

Our View: Soto has struggled for most of the 2009 season, so anything good coming from him at the plate is noteworthy. You have to wonder which is the real Soto, the 2008 or 2009 version, and fantasy owners should be very cautious with him next season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 8/21, 11:39 AM CT
Geovany Soto is expected to return to the Cubs' lineup on Friday, according to MLB.com. Soto has sat the past two games while dealing with a slump.

Our View: Soto has been slumping, and he has gotten some time off. We know it's a big shocker that he is struggling right now, since he has been so good this season (sarcasm). Anyone still holding onto Soto should find another option, as Koyie Hill is the better catcher on the Cubs' roster at this point.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 8/10, 11:11 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 1-for-3 with a homer and two RBI in Monday's 11-5 loss at Colorado.

Our View: Soto launched his first homer of August, and was in need of solid outing after going 1-for-17 over his previous five games.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 8/7, 4:27 PM CT
Geovany Soto has been activated from the disabled list.

Our View: Soto struggled mightily for most of the season (.209 average as last as June 12th) before finally getting into a groove just before he got hurt. There's no telling which Geovany might show up, but it's worth gambling that it's the good one because of how good he was last year and the extra protection he'll have in the lineup in form of Aramis Ramirez, who was out most of the time Soto was in the lineup.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 8/3, 9:22 AM CT
Geovany Soto went 1-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday in his first rehab start for the Cubs' rookie league team, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Soto is scheduled to join Double-A Tennessee for three rehab games before being activated by the team before Friday's game against Colorado.

Our View: Soto will only have four rehab games under his belt before his activation Friday, and he doesn't look like a great fantasy play going forward unless he somehow manages to turn his season around. The catching position is thin, but his .230 average and eight homers still aren't good enough to warrant an add at this point.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 7/27, 9:21 AM CT
Geovany Soto (oblique) is due to return from the disabled list in about a week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: This is supposedly good news for the Cubs, though backup Koyie Hill, hitting .206 with two home runs, is providing about the same amount of production Soto was before going down (.230, eight homers). Be ready to activate the slumping sophomore for next week.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 7/17, 9:54 AM CT
According to MLB.com, the Cubs are no longer looking for extra help behind the plate due to the progression of injured catcher Geovany Soto.

Our View: Out with an oblique strain, Soto has handed the bulk of the workload to Koyie Hill. He will continue to bolster the backstop position until Soto's return, but the team feels that the former Rookie of the Year has turned the corner and could return in as soon as two weeks. GM Randy Bush says, "We're encouraged with where he's at."
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 7/14, 8:06 PM CT
Geovany Soto is rehabbing his strained left oblique at the Cubs' training facility in Arizona, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: An MRI revealed that his strain is mild to moderate. The club is hopeful that the injury will only last for 15-20 days, and that he will return to Chicago as soon as possible. The young catcher shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 7/10, 11:56 AM CT
The Cubs are expected to place catcher Geovany Soto (left oblique strain) on the disabled list on Friday, according to the MLB.com.

Our View: The move will be retroactive to last Tuesday, but Soto is expected to miss in the neighborhood of a month. Despite his struggles this year, his injury damages a struggling Cubs lineup that was just boosted earlier this week by the return of Aramis Ramirez. Koyie Hill should get a majority of the starts in his absence.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 7/9, 11:58 AM CT
Updating a previous report, the MRI on the injured oblique of Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto showed some damage, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs will wait to place him on the DL until after the All-Star break if necessary. Koyie Hill will assume a majority of the catching duties in Soto's absence.

Our View: Since the break is coming up, the Cubs have decided to play a man short for this weekend to give Soto a chance to return after the break is over. If he is still hurting when the Cubs resume play, he will head to the DL retroactive to yesterday. We will keep you updated.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 7/8, 12:57 PM CT
MLBlogs.com is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup due to a mild oblique strain. Soto is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday. He was replaced by Koyie Hill behind the plate.

Our View: Soto is listed as day-to-day, but oblique injuries are usually not good. It may be minor, but we will keep you updated on his status throughout the rest of the week. Get him out of the lineup for today if you can.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 7/3, 11:30 AM CT
The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Cubs catcher Geovany Soto is not in the team's lineup for their Friday afternoon game against the Brewers. He will be replaced by Koyie Hill behind the plate.

Our View: Soto has actually been hitting the ball well lately after a horrid start to his season, and he is slowly turning back into a solid fantasy option. Get him out today if possible, and if not he should be back tomorrow.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/30, 8:50 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 2-for-3 with a double and a single in tonight's 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh.

Our View: The Cubs only mustered six hits in the shutout loss, and stranded 12 men on base. Soto recorded their only extra base hit, and was a lone bright spot.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 6/26, 5:51 PM CT
Geovany Soto led the Cubs offensively in Friday's 5-4 win at the White Sox, as he went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer off Jose Contreras. His other knock was a single.

Our View: Soto crushed his sixth homer of June, and is finally generating power for fantasy owners after only hitting one homer over the first two months of the season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 6/25, 2:21 PM CT
The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto tested positive for marijuana at this year's World Baseball Classic. Soto has been banned from international play for two years, but he will not be disciplined by the league or by the Cubs.

Our View: Since the positive test didn't come during a league test, Soto gets off the hook. Still, with his terrible sophomore season finally starting to look up, this is a terrible time for the news to come out. Soto assured the fans that it was an isolated incident, and he apologized to his team and the city of Chicago.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 6/24, 10:13 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 2-for-4 with a solo homer off Rick Porcello in Wednesday's 5-3 loss at Detroit. His other hit was a double.

Our View: Soto swatted his third homer over his last six games, and is finally generating power for fantasy owners after only hitting one home run over the first two months of the season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 6/24, 11:22 AM CT
Geovany Soto will start on Wednesday after coming out of the Cubs Tuesday night game with an injured thumb, according to MLB.com.

Our View: If you are still starting Soto every game, he and his .222 average are good for Wednesday night.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 6/21, 4:55 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 1-for-2 with a solo homer and two RBI in Sunday's 6-2 win over Cleveland at Wrigley Field.

Our View: Soto is starting to generate power as he hit a homer in two of his last three games. He only had one total homer over the previous two months of the season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 6/18, 4:18 PM CT
Geovany Soto's eighth inning home run completed a four run comeback for the Cubs on Thursday and tied their game with the White Sox at 5-5. They would go on to win 6-5.

Our View: Soto is showing signs of life after a horrendous start to 2009. He now has three home runs in the last two weeks after only hitting one the first two months of the season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 6/6, 10:14 PM CT
Geovany Soto returned to the Cubs' lineup with a bang on Saturday as he launched a solo home run in the seventh inning. Soto was 1-for-4 on the night, but that one hit was a big one.

Our View: Soto has been awful this season, but his home run tonight gives fantasy owners something to be excited about. The reigning Rookie of the Year has the ability, and if he puts it together he could be a top option in the second half of the year. He has to prove he can be consistent before he regains his fantasy value, however.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 6/5, 10:03 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Cubs' catcher Geovany Soto will be out for the next few games with what the team is calling a "mental break." Soto has been struggling this season, and the team feels like he could use a break.

Our View: Soto has been a major disappointment this season, and right now he is killing fantasy owners. It may not be time to completely give up just yet, but you should find another option for the next few days and maybe keep Soto out until he starts hitting again.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 5/13, 11:48 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in the Cubs' rain-shortened 6-4 win over the Padres on Wednesday.

Our View: Last year's Rookie of the Year, has been off to a dreadful start this season. He raised (yes, raised) his average to .193 after today's game, hit his first home run and drove in his fifth, sixth and seventh runs. That should give you an idea of how poor Soto has been up to this point.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/29, 12:54 PM CT
Catcher Geovany Soto is back in the lineup on Wednesday after a break on Tuesday, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Our View: Soto has been pushing through a sore shoulder, and it may be affecting him at the plate and behind the plate. We hope one day off helps him to relax.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/29, 8:45 AM CT
Catcher Geovany Soto could be out of the Cubs lineup again on Wednesday. "Sometimes, rather than fight it, you get him out of there for a few days and get the cobwebs out," manager Lou Piniella tells the Chicago Tribune. "Sometimes a young player [needs to] relax and [needs] a little time to get himself together." Soto sat out on Tuesday. He is hitting only .119 and has been dealing with a sore right shoulder. Koyie Hill will start if Soto is out on Wednesday.

Our View: Soto is testing fantasy owners' patience with this slow, injury-hindered first month. He may be pressing too hard to live up to his rookie levels, and a couple days on the bench could be a good thing.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 4/28, 3:27 PM CT
Geovany Soto will not be in the Cubs' lineup tonight at Arizona, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Soto is yet to hit a home run and holds an anemic .119 average over 42 at-bats. He also allowed five stolen bases in Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, and it is uncertain how many games skipper Lou Piniella will keep him on the bench.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 4/13, 9:42 AM CT
Geovany Soto played catch at around 90 feet Sunday and did not report any issues regarding his sore right shoulder, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View: Skipper Lou Piniella indicated that Soto won't be placed on the DL. He will be ready to play by Wednesday. His shoulder is at around 60 percent.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 4/12, 10:36 AM CT
Geovany Soto, who is dealing with a sore right shoulder, will try to throw today, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Soto is feeling better, but skipper Lou Piniella will have to decide by Monday whether to place him on the 15-day DL. Primary backup catcher Koyie Hill is also nursing a painful toe injury, and the club cannot afford to carry one catcher.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 4/11, 12:00 PM CT
Geovany Soto isn't expected to play during the weekend series at Milwaukee, according to Scout.com. "I would say tomorrow, probably not," manager Lou Piniella said, referring to Saturday night's game. "Sunday, I'll waver a little bit, but I wouldn't bet on it." Soto is dealing with a sore right shoulder.

Our View: At this point, the Cubs don't plan on placing Soto on the DL, but Pinella said the situation can't go on much longer. Mark Johnson would likely be recalled from Triple-A Iowa if the team decides to DL Soto.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 4/10, 9:33 AM CT
An MRI on Thursday revealed no structural damage in Geovany Soto's right shoulder and Soto isn't expected to miss more than the next two or three games for the Cubs, according to the Arlington Daily Herald.

Our View: This comes as great news to Soto owners, as there had been lingering concerns that a DL-stint was in the offing. Koyie Hill will start in Soto's place and, while you shouldn't expect anything from Soto the rest of this weekend, it looks like it will be safe to go with the star catcher in your lineup for next week.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 4/9, 12:49 PM CT
Geovany Soto could be placed on the 15-day DL with his sore right shoulder, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Soto dealt with a similar shoulder ailment in Triple-A, and Cubs' skipper Lou Piniella said, "From talking to him, it lasted a week or so the first time. Let us hope it does not. If it is going to be that long, I am not so sure we can stay with one catcher."

Our View: Koyie Hill will serve as the starting catcher while Soto is out, and they could recall Mark Johnson from Triple-A for depth if needed. The Cubs' next game is Friday at Milwaukee.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/8, 11:12 AM CT
Geovany Soto exited Tuesday's game with a sore right shoulder, according to the Chicago Tribune. Skipper Lou Piniella said, "He threw a ball to second base in a little awkward position and he felt a strain." Soto added that it just may be fatigue and said, "Bad time to happen, but I think I will be alright in a couple days."

Our View: Soto will sit out Wednesday's game, but said he could play in a "super emergency." Koyie Hill will replace him tonight behind the plate at Houston.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/1, 6:41 PM CT
Geovany Soto smacked two home runs on Wednesday and drove in five. They were his first home runs of the spring.

Our View: It's nice to see Soto showing off the power stroke for the first time this spring. He should settle in nicely in the Cubs loaded and expensive lineup and be a fine fantasy producer yet again this year.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 2/23, 9:33 AM CT
Geovany Soto is not expecting a sophomore slump in 2009, according to MLB.com. Manager Lou Piniella stated, "He has got a nice quick swing, he hits the ball to all parts of the field, and I think he will do just fine. We do not have to hit him in the middle part of our lineup. We can hit him in the sixth, seventh holes. I think he will be fine. Catching-wise, he knows our pitching staff quite well. It should nott be a problem at all."

Our View: The reigning NL Rookie of the Year should be safe to draft as a top-5 fantasy catcher.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 2/12, 4:12 PM CT
Geovany Soto has arrived early to Cubs camp and it appears that he has lost weight this offseason. He also has claimed his injured hand is 100 percent and is ready to go, according to the Daily Herald.

Our View: Soto won the Rookie of the Year award in the National League last year and was a fantasy stud behind the plate. This is nothing but good news for Soto fans.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 11/10, 1:45 PM CT
Geovany Soto has been named the NL Rookie of the Year for 2008, according to the Associated Press. Soto hit .285 over 141 games, with 23 homers and 86 RBI.

Our View: The Cubs' catcher won the award in a landslide, as he collected 31 of 32 first-place votes by the Baseball Writers Association of America. The last member of the Cubs to earn the honor was hurler Kerry Wood back in 1998. The last catcher to win the award was Mike Piazza (Dodgers) in 1993.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 11/9, 4:40 PM CT
Geovany Soto is the leading candidate to take home the NL Rookie of the Year award that will be announced on Monday, according to MLB.com. Others with a shot to win the award would include Joey Votto, Jair Jurrjens and Hiroki Kuroda.

Our View: In a relatively thin class, Soto's ability with the lumber (.285-23-86) combined with his ability to spearhead one of the best staffs' in the NL behind the plate give him the clear advantage over Votto, a first base man from a terrible club in Cincinnati.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 10/21, 3:09 PM CT
Geovany Soto has been named NL rookie of the year by the Sporting News.

Our View: Soto had a fantastic rookie season. He was named as the first ever National League rookie catcher to start the all-star game, and put up great numbers for the Cubs all season. Along with Russell Martin and Brian McCann, he will be a top bet for an offensive catcher next season.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 9/28, 10:53 AM CT
Geovany Soto left Friday's game early after fouling a pitch off his left hand, but felt well enough to play Saturday if needed, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: The Cubs' rookie phenom should be good to go for Game 1 of the NLDS.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 9/26, 9:51 PM CT
Geovany Soto left Friday's game during his at-bat in the sixth inning after shaking his left hand in pain after fouling off a pitch, according to the AP.

Our View: Soto was scratched during a game earlier this month because of soreness in the hand. We will keep you posted on his status.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 9/25, 7:50 AM CT
Cubs catcher Geovany Soto has not played since Monday, but he will return to the lineup on Friday and participate in two of the team's final three games, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Soto has played in 140 games, which is a hefty amount for a catcher, and he has also been dealing with a sore left hand. Fantasy owners can feel free to re-insert him back into their lineups Friday.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSaturday 9/20, 8:28 AM CT
X-rays revealed that Cubs catcher Geovany Soto simply had a bruised hand and there was no break, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Soto will be fine, but may be held out for a game or two. Fantasy owners should monitor his status before putting him back in the lineup.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 9/19, 1:06 PM CT
Geovany Soto has been scratched from today's lineup due to a sore left hand, according to the AP.

Our View: He is considered day-to-day. X-rays taken before the game revealed no structural damage (he injured his hand on a swing early in Thursday's game).
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 9/18, 5:40 PM CT
Geovany Soto had only one hit in five at-bats on Thursday against the Brewers but that one hit was a very important one. That hit was a game-tying, three-run home run in bottom of the ninth inning against the Brewers closer Salomon Torres.

Our View: Soto's name can almost certainly be engraved into the NL ROY trophy with the numbers he has put up in 2008. Fantasy owners who took the chance on drafting the rookie have been more than pleasantly surprised.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 9/15, 4:23 PM CT
Geovany Soto had only one hit on Monday against the Astros, but it was a two-run homer. He is up to 22 long balls and 83 RBI on the year.

Our View: Soto should already have a space reserved for his NL ROY trophy, and he is making a strong run at top of the fantasy catcher rankings for 2009. His digits are almost identical to Brian McCann's, and those are the only two backstops with both 20 homers and 80 RBI this year.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 9/9, 12:01 PM CT
Geovany Soto has been named the NL Rookie of the Month for August, acording to the AP. Soto batted .355 (27-for-76) with three home runs and 21 RBI over 24 games in the month. The 25-year-old also registered 17 runs, five doubles, a triple and a .566 slugging percentage.

Our View: His best effort came of August 26 when he collected seven RBI against the Pirates. Teammate Jeff Samardjiza was also considered for the honor, as was Chris Perez of the Cardinals.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 9/2, 11:40 PM CT
Geovany Soto collected three hits in six at-bats, including his 21st home run of the season in the Cubs 9-7 loss to the Astros.

Our View: Despite the overreaching thoughts that Soto is the NL MVP, he has had a very good year, and fantasy owners should be thrilled to get the numbers he puts up.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 8/31, 4:40 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 3-for-4 with a run against the Phillies on Sunday. He hit .355 with three homers, 21 RBI, and 17 runs in 24 games this August.

Our View: Soto's bat slowed down in June and July, and it was nice to see him have a big August. It is his first full year in the majors, and it looks like he'll be a top-five fantasy catcher for many seasons to come.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 8/26, 10:50 PM CT
Geovany Soto had a monster effort Tuesday in the Cubs' 14-9 win over Pittsburgh, tallying two base-clearing doubles and a solo homer.

Our View: Soto now has a .285-20-78 line on the year. He's got to be the front-runner for Rookie of the Year honors.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 8/13, 3:50 PM CT
Geovany Soto led the Cubs in Wednesday's 10-2 win over Atlanta, as he went 3-for-5 with four RBI. He hit a single, a double, and a two-run homer.

Our View: He raised his average a few points to .285 and now has 18 homers and 67 RBI over 110 games. He has registered multiple hits in three of his last four outings, and snapped a 13-game drought without a homer.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 7/8, 10:18 PM CT
Geovany Soto hit his 16th home run on the year and contributed three RBI in the Cubs' 7-3 victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Our View: The rookie has shown no signs of slowing down and has cemented his All-Star status.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsSunday 7/6, 5:42 PM CT
Geovany Soto hit a solo shot in the eighth inning on Sunday, the same day the rookie catcher was announced as the starter in the All-Star game. It was his 15th home run of the year.

Our View: An incredible year continues for Soto who is joined by Russell Martin and Brian McCann on the All-Star roster. He is a superior match-up against lefties.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 7/4, 10:33 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 win over the Cardinals. His other two hits were singles.

Our View: Soto has 14 homers and 51 RBI over 80 games, with a .290 average. He has recorded multiple hits in three of his last five outings.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 7/1, 11:51 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 1-for-4 and recorded the Cubs' lone RBI in a tough 2-1 loss to the Giants on Tuesday night.

Our View: Soto has 48 RBI over 77 games, and snapped a three-game skid in that department.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 6/27, 6:25 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 3-for-4 with one RBI on a solo home run in Friday's 10-3 loss to the cross-town rival White Sox.

Our View: He collected his 13 homer and 47th RBI of the season, and raised his average to .285.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/17, 9:14 AM CT
The Chicago Tribune states that skipper Lou Piniella is likely to give Geovany Soto some rest during the three-game set against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Soto has played in 63 games so far this season.

Our View: The plan is to have Soto serve as the DH on Tuesday, with Henry Blanco behind the plate. Blanco has thrown out 41% of base-runners attempting to steal, and it makes sense to use him against a speedy Rays' offense that features BJ Upton and Carl Crawford. Soto could also sit on Thursday night, with a day game against the cross-town rival White Sox.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsTuesday 6/10, 10:32 PM CT
The Cubs enjoyed solid efforts from a handful of players in the team's 10-5 win over Atlanta, but none were as potent as catcher Geovany Soto . Soto went 2-for-5 at the plate with his 11th home run of the season to total three RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View: Soto was hitting just .091 through June coming into tonight. This may help him get his swing right moving forward.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsFriday 6/6, 10:56 PM CT
Geovany Soto didn't start Friday because of a swollen finger that he apparently aggravated on a swing, according to MLB.com. "He's got a little bit of swelling in his bottom hand," manager Lou Piniella said. "We're trying to figure out why the bottom hand leaves the bat. The one that should leave is the top hand. He swings and when the bottom hand comes off, somehow the top hand rubs over the finger and he has a little swelling in there."

Our View: Pinella said he was planning on giving Soto either Friday or Saturday off, anyway. Hopefully he'll be back in there tomorrow.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 5/29, 11:20 PM CT
Geovany Soto went 0-for-3 on Thursday to drop his average down to .299, only the second time it has been below .300 since April 18th.

Our View: Soto has gone nine games without a home run during which time he has just three RBI and he has struck out in 11 of the past 12 games. The regression was predictable, the question is how long will it last?

Geovany Soto hit the first inside the park home run by a Cubs catcher since 1959 on Monday night as he knocked in three runs for the Cubs.

Our View: For the second night in a row umpires made a bad call on a flyball that should have been a home run, but unlike Carlos Delgado last night who had his ball ruled foul, Soto's ball was in play and it bounced so far away from center fielder Michael Bourn that Soto was able to leg it out.

Geovany Soto will sit out of action today, according to the Chicago Tribune. Henry Blanco will catch starting hurler Ryan Dempster.

Our View: Soto is hitting .321 with seven homers and 29 RBI over 37 games, and earned a day off.

Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsThursday 5/1, 1:13 PM CT
Geovany Soto set a Cubs' rookie record with 20 RBI in the month of April, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The rookie is proving to be a fantasy steal for 2008, as he is belting .333 with five homers and 20 RBI over 87 at-bats. He is generating strong numbers, despite striking out 23 times.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/30, 11:05 PM CT
Geovany Soto hit two 3-run home runs on Wednesday night on his way to to six RBI for the Cubbies.

Our View: In the early going it is clear that Soto holds a massive advantage over the other young gun at catcher in the NL in J.R. Towles. It's completely unreasonable to expect Soto to continue producing at this level so you might want to see if you can pull off the old "sell-high" move as his value is soaring.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsWednesday 4/23, 11:10 PM CT
Geovany Soto hit his third home run of the season on Wednesday night as he had four hits to bump his average to .353.

Our View: Soto hit .353 last year on his way to minor league MVP honors, and while it is foolish to expect that level of production this year, it certainly proves that Soto is not overmatched in any way and is ready to post big offensive numbers for a catcher.

Geovany Soto hit two-run homer in Chicago's five-run sixth inning, and the Cubs finished off a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh, winning 7-3 on Thursday night. Soto had three extra-base hits, including two doubles. It was Soto's second career four-hit game.

Geovany Soto had his first big day of the season as he went 3-for-7 with a run scored and two RBI for the Cubs. As great as that day was Soto left seven men on base so it could have been a really big afternoon. Soto should be able to hit, but he will need to improve his ability to throw out runners or he could start to lose a few starts moving forward.
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 4/7, 9:25 AM CT
Geovany Soto got the day off on Sunday to work on his throwing. Opponents are 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts against Soto this year. "He's using his upper body and arm and not using his legs and getting his body into [throws to second base]. He worked on it and was much improved," manager Lou Piniella tells the Chicago Sun-Times. We don't imagine the bad defense will cost Soto too much time, as the Cubs love his bat.

Geovany Soto drove in another two runs on Friday. He is only hitting .167 on the young season, but he has notched in RBI in three straight games.

Geovany Soto had a tough day at the plate against the Angels on Wednesday as he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, while stranding three men on base. His spring average dipped to .222 and the Cubs must be displeased with their projected starting catcher right now.

Not only did Geovany Soto beat out Henry Blanco for an NLDS roster spot, but he will start Game 1 against the D'Backs. Soto hit .389 with three homers in 54 at-bats with the Cubs, but Arizona's running game is as much of a reason for him getting the nod over Jason Kendall, who has had a horrible time trying to throw out baserunners. "It hasn't sunk in yet but it's pretty good," Soto said in the Chicago Sun-Times. "I've got nothing to lose. Just have fun and try to help the team like I've been doing. I'll try my best to stay calm and play my game."
Geovany Soto, C, Chicago CubsMonday 9/17, 11:46 AM CT
Geovany Soto is making a case for regular playing time down the stretch for the Cubs. Soto got a couple starts over the weekend and went 5-for-9 with three doubles, including a four-hit game on Sunday. "It's a lot of food for thought," manager Lou Piniella said in the Chicago Sun-Times. "What a job he's done. It's awfully impressive." Soto is a gifted offensive player, having won PCL Player of the Year honors after hitting .353 with 26 homers and 109 RBI for Triple-A Iowa. Piniella said before Sunday's game that he prefers more experience on the field this time of year, suggesting that Jason Kendall would remain his regular behind the plate, but we could see Soto get a few starts per week.
