Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 2/24, 7:34 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Diamondbacks are interested in locking up breakout catcher Miguel Montero with a multi-year contract.

Our View: The D-Backs are really getting down to brass tacks on planning for their future. They are already currently in long-term talks with Mark Reynolds and Justin Upton and now are adding Montero to the list. "He's certainly a guy that we have a lot of faith in for the future," managing general partner Ken Kendrick said. "So, yeah, I think there's potential opportunity to sign him for more than just a single year." Montero hit .294 with 16 homers, 59 RBIs and an OPS of .832 in his breakout campaign last year.

Our View: Montero is coming off the best year of his career, as he set new highs with a .294 batting average and 16 homers. The 26-year-old looks to be Arizona's No. 1 catcher for 2010.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 1/15, 3:15 PM CT
The Diamondbacks are nearing a $2-million agreement with Miguel Montero for the 2010 season, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Our View: This means the two sides will avoid an arbitration hearing. After hitting .316 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI after the All-Star break last season, Montero will be Arizona's starter in 2010.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 10/2, 1:12 PM CT
Miguel Montero is out of the Diamondbacks' lineup for their Friday afternoon game against the Cubs. John Hester will replace Montero behind the plate.

Our View: Montero has had a very nice season for th D-Backs, but the team wants to see Hester behind the plate a bit down the stretch. The way Montero has played in the second half this season, he figures to be a fantasy starter in 2010.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 9/30, 12:38 AM CT
Miguel Montero crushed two homers in Tuesday's loss to the Giants.

Our View: Montero is hitting .300 with 16 homers and 59 RBI on the season, and has been one of the best offensive backstops in the game since the All Star break. Good thing Chris Snyder got hurt eh?
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 9/10, 12:12 AM CT
Miguel Montero was 3-for-3 with a home run on Wednesday, helping the Diamondbacks claw out a 4-3 win over the Dodgers at home.

Our View: Montero has been perhaps the best offensive catcher in baseball since the All-Star break, batting .347 with nine home runs and 34 RBI. He's a definite sleeper at catcher in next year's drafts.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/4, 11:44 PM CT
Miguel Montero was 1-for-3 with two RBI in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 loss to the Rockies on Friday. Montero is hitting .297 on the season.

Our View: Montero is having a very solid second-half of the season, and he has established himself as a decent offensive threat from the catching position. He has 13 homers and 52 RBI, and he should remain a decent fantasy play as the season nears its end.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/30, 11:55 AM CT
Miguel Montero is not in the team's lineup for their Sunday afternoon game against the Astros. John Hester will handle the duties behind the plate for today's game.

Our View: Montero has been on a tear in the second half, but he will get a day off today since it is a day game. He has been an RBI machine as of late, and expect his production to continue.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/7, 3:20 PM CT
Miguel Montero will not be in the Diamondbacks' lineup for their Friday night game against the Nationals. Chris Snyder will be behind the plate in Montero's place tonight.

Our View: Montero will still be getting a majority of the playing time behind the dish for the Snakes, but the team wants to get Snyder some at-bats every week. As long as Montero keeps hitting the ball, he will be in the lineup more often than not.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/2, 5:52 PM CT
Miguel Montero went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Arizona's 5-2 win over the Mets on Sunday.

Our View: The hot hitting catcher continues to show why Chris Snyder lost his job after returning from the DL. He's now hitting .290 with ten homers and 32 RBI this season and is batting over .340 since July 1st.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/25, 12:00 AM CT

Miguel Montero's offensive explosion continued on Wednesday, as he homered for the fourth time in five games, but it wasn't enough as the Diamondbacks lost 4-3 in Colorado.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 7/21, 11:17 PM CT
Miguel Montero hit his eighth home run of the season on Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies 6-5 in Denver.

Miguel Montero is back in the lineup on Tuesday despite facing southpaw Franklin Morales, according to MLB.com. Montero hit a three-run home run on Monday.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/10, 12:22 AM CT
Miguel Montero cranked his first homer of the spring on Monday. It was one of very few bright spots for Arizona in a 16-3 loss to the Padres.

Our View: Montero is a big part of the Diamondbacks' depth at catcher. They have plenty of holes on their club, so dealing a catcher could help fill one if they chose to do so.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 1/13, 8:39 AM CT
If catcher Miguel Montero were to be traded to the Red Sox, the Arizona Diamondbacks want a similar-type prospect in return, which is holding up a potential deal, according to the Boston Globe.

Our View: Montero was solid at the plate for Arizona last season, hitting just .255, but with an OBP of .330. He would be the backup to Josh Bard, meaning the end of the Jason Varitek era in Boston.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 1/12, 9:07 AM CT
Talks between the Red Sox and Diamondbacks regarding catcher Miguel Montero are heating up, according to the Boston Herald.

Our View: Arizona is not asking for pitcher Clay Buchholz and the two clubs may be able to agree on a match. The Red Sox could still hold interest in veteran Jason Varitek if they acquire the 25-year-old Montero.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 1/9, 3:04 PM CT
Miguel Montero is on Boston's radar, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN.

Our View: The Red Sox will not give up pitcher Michael Bowden to acquire Montero from Arizona. Boston has already failed in their pursuit of the Dodgers' Russell Martin and the Angels' Mike Napoli.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 12/20, 10:13 AM CT
The Diamondbacks are unlikely to trade catcher Miguel Montero, according to the Arizona Republic.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 11/7, 9:53 AM CT
Miguel Montero could be dealt as he is Arizona's best trading chip due to a depleted farm system, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Montero is not being utilized while backing up Chris Snyder, and he is viewed as a potential long-term starter by several MLB clubs. Among their top priorities should be at second base, with Orlando Hudson expected to leave in free agency.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/27, 11:58 PM CT
Miguel Montero might make a move from behind the plate to the hot corner. Montero has been taking ground balls at third for the past couple of weeks and he might be the answer at third for the Diamondbacks in 2009.

Our View: Montero has showed some promise at the plate and with Chris Snyder the starting catcher, playing him at third base might be the answer to getting him more at-bats.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 8/16, 9:32 PM CT
Miguel Montero swatted a grand slam and finished Saturday night at 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs against the Astros.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/3, 12:30 AM CT
Miguel Montero went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: His homer was his first of the season, over 125 at-bats. He is hitting well over his last two outings, and is worth a look in larger NL-only leagues if you need help, until Chris Snyder returns from the DL.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/18, 7:55 PM CT
Miguel Montero is in the starting lineup on Wednesday night against the A's Joe Blanton. Montero, Randy Johnson's personal catcher, has been picking up some additional at-bats versus right-handed pitching.

Our View: The backup catcher is a modest upgrade offensively over Chris Snyder against right-handed pitchers.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/23, 2:55 PM CT
Miguel Montero will be activated from the DL today in time for tonight's game against the Dodgers, according to the East Valley Tribune. Alex Romero will be optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster for Montero.

Our View: Montero will serve as the top backup to Chris Snyder, who has failed to impress so far with a .196 average over 51 at-bats. Montero will also provide the team with a powerful left-handed bat as a pinch-hitter.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/21, 9:52 AM CT
Miguel Montero will likely come off the disabled list during the coming week, the Arizona Republic confirms. The backstop has been rehabbing a fractured right index finger.

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 4/17, 9:05 AM CT
Miguel Montero had played in six games of his rehab assignment entering Wednesday, according to the Arizona Republic. Manager Bob Melvin said Montero would need to catch nine innings in back-to-back games before he is ready to return. Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 3/14, 7:49 AM CT
Miguel Montero had another CT scan on his broken right index finger, according to the Arizona Republic. The results showed improvement in the digit, but he was told to rest it for another week. "Based on not having another week, it's going to be real difficult to get him ready for the start of the season," manager Doug Melvin said. Hopefully Montero will be available soon after the season begins, but clearly he's all but out for opening day.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 3/9, 7:20 AM CT

Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 3/1, 8:08 AM CT
Miguel Montero still is bothered by his broken finger enough that the Diamondbacks announced Friday he will not play in a spring game for at least the next two weeks, according to the Arizona Republic. A CT scan revealed Friday that the fractured digit sustained in a December winter league game still has not fully healed. At this point, it looks like Montero will have a tough time being ready by opening day.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 2/16, 8:28 AM CT
Miguel Montero , who is recovering from a broken finger suffered when playing winter ball, had a second X-ray taken Thursday that confirmed the fracture has not progressed like the team would have liked. The Arizona catcher has been told not to swing a bat and limit any throwing sessions according to the official team website. "It just hasn't quite responded to the point where they envisioned at this point of time," Melvin said. The injury figures to create more looks, swings and plate opportunities for starter Chris Snyder this spring, and that might not be "bad" thing.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 2/11, 8:58 PM CT
Miguel Montero will likely be limited at the start of training camp thanks to an injured index finger according to Arizona Central. “A foul tip fractured his right index finger,” GM Josh Byrnes said. “So we’ll probably ease off on hitting early (in spring training). He should be OK for catching bullpens and throwing." Montero figures to back up Chris Snyder anyway, though this injury might cause him to lose enough looks in camp to really tilt things in favor of Snyder.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 7/6, 10:47 AM CT
Miguel Montero started Thursday for the third game in a row, the first time all season he's done so. Montero did ground into a game-ending double play, but overall he's been very good lately, gaining 10 hits in his last 31 at-bats, which includes a pair of homers. "He's a lot more comfortable and feels like he belongs," manager Bob Melvin said of Montero in the Arizona Republic.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 5/18, 10:22 AM CT
Manager Bob Melvin is leaning towards giving Miguel Montero some more playing time behind the plate. Montero is batting just .224 this year, but Melvin has liked the catcher's approach at the plate, according to the Arizona Republic. "The way he's swinging the bat and the way we've had trouble scoring runs, he's been giving us some pretty quality at-bats," Melvin said. "I wouldn't argue against trying to get him some more consistent time, maybe try to play him two or three days in a row."
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/4, 10:45 AM CT
Miguel Montero will make his first start of the year Wednesday at Colorado, the Arizona Republic reports. Chris Snyder started the first two games for the Diamondbacks and went 2-for-5 with three walks, the latter probably tied to batting in the eighth spot in the lineup.
Miguel Montero, C, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 11/25, 6:52 PM CT
Miguel Montero should get a chance to be the everyday catcher for the Diamondbacks now that Johnny Estrada has been traded. Montero hit .286 with 17 homers in 423 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A last season. He will compete with Chris Snyder.
