Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 10/1, 8:55 PM CT
In his final start of 2009, Matt Garza allowed three runs in six innings, not good enough to pick up his ninth win, as Tampa Bay lost 3-2 to the Orioles at home.

Our View: Garza finishes 2009 with an 8-12 record, 3.95 ERA and 189 strikeouts in 203 innings pitched. His innings pitched and strikeout totals are both career highs.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 9/26, 11:49 PM CT
Matt Garza was ripped apart by a thundering Rangers lineup on Saturday. The right-hander was tagged for seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings, and the 15-3 loss dropped him to 8-11 on the season.

Our View: Garza had a 2.22 ERA in September coming into Saturday's start, but he couldn't keep up his brilliance against a potent lineup in Arlington. The two homers he gave up to Marlon Byrd were the big blows in the game.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 9/19, 10:09 PM CT
Matt Garza blanked the Blue Jays for 7.1 innings on Saturday and earned his eighth win with the 4-0 victory.

Our View: Garza allowed just three hits on Saturday and struck out ten. The bad news was that he walked six. Walks have been a problem for him, so it's strange that he had such a dominant start while giving away that many free passes. The win was his first since July 24th.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 9/13, 2:54 PM CT
Matt Garza was hit with the loss despite producing a quality start on Sunday as the Rays fell to the Red Sox 3-1. Garza went 7.1 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out eight.

Our View: Garza was excellent until the eighth inning, and he still finished with a very good start. He takes the tough-luck loss, but he has been very good over his last two outings.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 9/7, 4:23 PM CT
Matt Garza only allowed one run (not earned) on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 4-1 loss at New York. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View: The game was tied at 1-1 when Garza exited, so he ends the day with a no-decision instead of a loss. Garza bounced back after giving up 10 earned runs over his previous two starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 9/2, 10:20 PM CT
Matt Garza gave up four earned runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in Wednesday's 8-5 win over Boston at Tropicana Field. He had three walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: Boston tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the eighth inning, so Garza was handed a no-decision rather than a win. He is winless over his last seven starts, and allowed four or more earned runs three times over the span.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 8/28, 11:30 PM CT
Matt Garza got blasted by the Tigers on Friday night. He allowed six runs on five hits and three walks over just five innings and took the loss as the Tigers took this one 6-2.

Our View: Garza was solid in his last two starts prior to Friday's but he's had a rough month of August. He's 0-1 with a 5.27 ERA and has seen his mark rise from 3.63 to 3.95.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 8/22, 11:05 PM CT
Matt Garza was good on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Rays beat the Rangers 5-4. Garza went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Our View: Garza was pretty good tonight against a very good Rangers' lineup, and his team picked up a big win. He has been consistent with the strikeouts, but not much else as he has struggled at times throughout the year. He isn't having the season he did last year, but he is still a good pitching option for the most part.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 8/16, 5:13 PM CT
Matt Garza didn't last long on Sunday, but was effective while on the mound. He held Toronto to just one run on eight hits and a pair of walks over five innings.

Our View: Garza fanned seven and relied on the strikeout to work his way out of multiple jams. That's one way to neutralize the fact that he allowed ten base runners in just five innings. He did not factor in the decision of the Rays' 5-2 winner.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 8/4, 11:20 PM CT
Matt Garza only allowed two earned runs on three hits over seven innings in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Boston at Tropicana Field. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: The Rays were trailing 2-1 when he exited, so Garza unfortunately takes a no-decision instead of a win for his solid performance. He only claimed one win over his last six starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 7/31, 5:25 PM CT
Matt Garza has been dealt a fine for an undisclosed amount for hitting Yankees' stud first baseman Mark Teixeira with a pitch, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Garza's wallet will be lighter for hitting Teixeira, but the Rays and fantasy owners should be pleased he avoided a suspension.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 7/29, 9:14 PM CT
Matt Garza gave up three earned runs on eight hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Yankees at Tropicana Field. He had three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Garza was dealt a loss, and now has a losing record at 7-8. He looks to remain an erratic fantasy hurler.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 7/24, 9:04 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed two earned runs on five hits over nine innings in Friday's 4-2 win at Toronto. He had no walks and racked up nine strikeouts.

Our View: Garza pitched very well tonight, and evened his record to 7-7. He notched his first complete game of 2009, and ended a three-game skid without earning a win.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 7/19, 6:14 PM CT
Matt Garza did not factor into the decision on Sunday as the Rays beat the Royals by a score of 4-3. Garza went five innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out five. He is 6-7 on the year.

Our View: Garza has been a fantasy enigma this season, as he has a losing record despite playing on a good team and compiling a 3.80 ERA. He still has excellent stuff, and fantasy owners have to believe that the wins will start to come at some point. As long as the Rays stay in the hunt, Garza should be a solid second half play.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 7/11, 8:45 PM CT
Matt Garza gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings in Saturday's 7-2 loss to Oakland at Tropicana Field. He issued one walk and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View: Garza now has a losing record at 6-7, and allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts. He held a solid 2.93 ERA over five starts in June, and should be able to bounce back fine.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 7/5, 10:30 PM CT
Matt Garza was roughed up for five earned runs on seven hits over five innings in Sunday's 5-2 loss at Texas. He issued two walks and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View: Garza had his two-game winning streak snapped, and falls to 6-6. He only allowed one earned run in three of five starts in June, and should remain active in fantasy lineups following tonight's poor outing at Rangers Ballpark.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 6/30, 9:48 PM CT
Matt Garza was in control in Tuesday's 4-1 win at Toronto, as he only allowed one earned run on seven hits over seven innings. He had three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Garza now has a winning record at 6-5, and he trims his ERA to 3.45. He has won in back-to-back starts, and closes out June with a solid 2.93 ERA over five outings. He shall remain active in fantasy lineups for his next turn in the Rays' rotation.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 6/24, 10:17 PM CT
Matt Garza was in control from the hill in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Phillies at Tropicana Field, as he only surrendered one earned run on three hits over eight innings. He had three walks and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View: Garza evens his record to 5-5, and trimmed his ERA to 3.61. He snapped a six-game skid without collecting a win.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 6/18, 5:11 PM CT
Matt Garza was rocked for four earned runs on five hits over five innings in Thursday's 4-3 loss at Colorado. He had two walks, five strikeouts and gave up three homers.

Our View: Garza now has a losing record at 4-5, and is winless over his last six outings. He has given up 13 homers over 14 starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 6/12, 10:56 PM CT
Matt Garza gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings in Friday's 4-3 win over the Nationals at Tropicana Field. He had four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Garza was handed a no-decision, and his record remains even a 4-4. He has not earned a win over his last five starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 6/7, 3:49 PM CT
Matt Garza pitched well in Sunday's 4-3 loss at New York, as he only allowed one earned run on four hits over five innings. He had two walks with two strikeouts.

Our View: Fantasy owners should be pleased with his performance, but the Rays unfortunately did not provide enough support for him to win. He takes a no-decision, and remains at 4-4 for the season. He is winless over his last four starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 5/31, 5:30 PM CT
Matt Garza was tagged with a loss, dropping to 4-4, despite logging a quality start against Minnesota on Sunday, giving up three runs off seven hits and one walk while striking out six in seven innings.

Our View: Garza looked great against his former team and continues to be far and away the most reliable starter in Tampa Bay's rotation. Continue to start him, regardless of the matchups, until he gives you reason to think otherwise.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 5/26, 9:51 PM CT
Matt Garza was the victim of no run support on Tuesday as he fell to the Indians 5-1. Garza went six innings and allowed four runs on five hits while striking out seven.

Our View: Garza wasn't bad tonight, but his team could only manage one run of support for him. The seven strikeouts were impressive, but four runs in six innings is still a big high. Still, he only gave up five hits and he did not walk a batter, so fantasy owners shouldn't be too upset with this start.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 5/21, 8:26 PM CT
Matt Garza had another strong outing on Thursday. allowing just two runs on seven hits and four walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out eight but failed to factor in the decision as the Rays won 6-5 in the ninth.

Our View: Garza has been dominant this season. Take away two bad starts where he was knocked around in the middle of April and he challenges for the league leaders in every category. He's has seven quality starts this season.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 5/16, 7:04 PM CT
Matt Garza notched his fourth win of the season on Saturday as the Rays downed the Indians 4-2. Garza went six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three.

Our View: Nice outing by Garza today, but the low strikeout total is a bit concerning. It's always nice when Garza pitches well, but usually his good outings come with a healthy dose of K's. Still, fantasy owners will take it. Expect the strikeout totals to come back in his next start.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 5/10, 11:18 PM CT
Matt Garza struck out six hitters over seven innings of work as the Rays fell to the Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision, but allowed seven hits, two walks, and three runs.

Our View: Garza shut down the Sox the previous two times he had pitched against him, but he was just a notch above average tonight. Regardless, he has shown flashes of brilliance going back to the end of last season and if he can maintain his focus, he could be a fantasy ace.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 5/5, 5:44 PM CT
Matt Garza got his third win of the season on Tuesday as the Rays beat the Orioles 6-3. Garza went eight innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View: Garza didn't pile up the strikeouts today, but he did throw very well. His ERA is down to 3.51, and he is starting to look like the 2008 Matt Garza. The strikeouts will be there in most stats, and if he can put together some consistency he will return to top flight fantasy status.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 4/30, 9:50 PM CT
Matt Garza struck out 10 Red Sox in 7.2 innings of work as the Rays crushed Boston 13-0 on Thursday. He allowed one hit and one walk, while prohibiting the Sox to cross the plate.

Our View: Garza owns the Red Sox and he showed it again tonight. He was off in his last two starts, but it appears that a matchup against Boston was all he needed to get straightend out. On the season, he has 34 strikeouts through 33 innings.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 4/19, 5:34 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed seven runs in 5.2 innings of work as the Rays lost 12-2 to the White Sox on Sunday. He allowed six hits and five walks while striking out four hitters.

Our View: Garza had been solid in his first two outings of the season, but he clearly did not have his best stuff today. Expect him to bounce back in his next outing.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 4/14, 10:11 PM CT
Matt Garza was very good in his second start of the season, but his offense and bullpen failed him in the Rays' 7-2 loss to the Yankees. He allowed just two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine in seven innings.

Our View: Garza's pitches missed a lot of Yankee bats on Tuesday and so far this season he's been superb, allowing only three runs in 14 innings for a 1.93 ERA.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 4/9, 5:56 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings to lead the Rays to a 4-3 win over Boston on Thursday.

Our View: Garza had control issues at times, walking three batters, but he struck out five and threw 63 strikes among his 106 pitches. One thing to keep an eye on: his ground ball-fly ball ratio was a tad high at 3-13.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 3/21, 9:31 AM CT
Matt Garza is dealing with a tired arm, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Garza was rocked for four runs Friday against Toronto and he said "his arm did not feel too great as he is facing that dead-arm period where it feels like you have nothing in the tank."

Our View: He will continue to build up his arm strength, and this should not be an issue when the regular season starts. He will work in the middle of the Rays' rotation.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 3/20, 4:45 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed four runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings Friday versus the Blue Jays.

Our View: The 25-year-old Garza had a breakout campaign in 2008, piling up 11 victories, but he won just two of his final nine starts. A solid first month of the season would show any critics that his skid at the end of 2008 has not carried over into a new season.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 3/15, 6:22 PM CT
Matt Garza threw four shutout innings in the Rays' 7-7 tie with the Pirates on Sunday. He allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out two in the outing.

Our View: This was his first extended showing of the spring for Garza. He managed to transform into a pretty dependable pitcher a season ago, and we like his chances to repeat many of those numbers in 2009.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 3/10, 4:14 PM CT
Matt Garza was touched for three runs on two hits in two innings of work in the Rays' 11-4 win over Toronto on Tuesday.

Our View: It was a rough afternoon for Garza, who struck out one and did not allow a walk. However, this is just one spring outing. The fact the right-hander held a 3.39 ERA in the second half last year should still have owners optimistic about the 2009 season.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 12/14, 11:00 AM CT
The St. Petersburg Times reports Matt Garza had minor surgery this offseason to repair an old fracture in his right foot.

Our View: He should be fine for spring training.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 10/25, 11:44 PM CT
Matt Garza struggled a bit in Game 3 of the World Series, allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out seven in six innings.

Our View: Garza really hurt himself by allowing Philadelphia to take him deep three times, including back-to-back jacks by Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the sixth inning.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 10/25, 12:48 PM CT
Matt Garza is set to take the hill in tonight's Game 3 of the World Series against the Phillies, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: The 24-year-old hurler was the MVP of the ALCS against Boston, and will be aiming to pull the Rays ahead, with the series currently tied at 1-1.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 10/19, 10:41 PM CT
Matt Garza pitched an excellent seven innings in Game 7 of the ALCS as the Rays defeated the Red Sox 3-1 to advance to the World Series. He struck out nine batters while allowing just two hits, including a first inning solo home run to Dustin Pedroia in the first inning. After the game, he was named the ALCS MVP.

Our View: Garza allowed just two runs in his two wins against Boston. Garza had a 3.70 ERA and a 11-9 record in his first season with Tampa Bay.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 10/19, 1:41 PM CT
Matt Garza is set to take the mound in tonight's do-or-die Game 7 of the ALCS against Boston at Tropicana Field, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Our View: In his two postseason starts, the 24-year-old hurler is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA (no home runs allowed). He has fared well under the pressure of the playoffs, and will need to keep his composure tonight in the biggest game in the history of the Rays' franchise, with a trip to their first World Series on the line.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 10/13, 7:05 PM CT
Matt Garza threw six innings, allowing one run on six hits and striking out five in Tampa Bay's 9-1 bludgeoning of the Red Sox.

Our View: Garza threw 116 pitches, and was clearly losing steam as he started the seventh but allowed a walk and a single. The Rays take a 2-1 series lead.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 10/5, 7:31 PM CT
Matt Garza, pitching on eight days rest, was throwing gas reaching the mid 90's with most his fastballs, but it wasn't enough as he fell to White Sox after permitting seven hits, four walks and five runs in six innings of work.

Our View: Garza was popping the catchers mitt but his control was just off as he failed to make that one pitch when the situation called for it. The Rays still lead the series two games to one, and will turn to Andy Sonnanstine to clinch the matchup in Game 4.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 9/21, 1:03 PM CT
Matt Garza's next turn in the rotation will be skipped as he recovers from going on three days' rest his last time out, according to the Tampa Tribune.

Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 9/14, 3:06 PM CT
Garza will start Wednesday on three-day's rest, according to the Rays' official website.

Our View: He only threw 83 pitches on Saturday, so he should be fresh for the start.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 9/12, 7:49 PM CT
With the postponement of Friday night's start against the Yankees, Matt Garza will start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Our View: Garza's day and night numbers are nearly identical. He has been very good this year, with a WHIP of 1.22 and ERA of 3.55.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 9/10, 3:51 PM CT
Matt Garza will make a start for the Rays on Friday, even though it is James Shields' turn in the rotation, according to the Tampa Tribune. The team wants to give Shields an extra day of rest.

Our View: Garza has been very good this year, with a WHIP of 1.22 and ERA of 3.55. Fantasy owners be sure to adjust your lineup accordingly.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 9/7, 3:02 PM CT
Garza lost his ninth game of the season on Sunday despite allowing only one run in seven innings. He allowed four hits, one walk and struck out seven.

Our View: Garza has absolutely dominated Toronto this season, allowing only two earned runs in five starts. If only he could face them every start.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 9/2, 9:47 PM CT
Matt Garza was not as good as he had been recently, giving up six runs, four earned, in five innings as the Rays were taken down by the Yankees, 7-2.

Our View: Garza's 11-8 record is not necessarily a reflection of how well he has pitched, as he had gotten the win in his last two decisions.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 8/27, 9:04 PM CT
Tampa Bay RHP Matt Garza was at the top of his game this evening, pitching his Rays to the 1-0 victory over Toronto. Garza pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Garza has two wins over his last three starts, giving up a total of 15 hits over 23 1/3 innings with four earned runs allowed. He has not allowed a home run since August 9th and carries 10 walks versus 26 strikeouts over the span.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 8/20, 9:54 PM CT
Tampa RHP Matt Garza put his best on the mound this evening but it was just a bit short of need to get the win over the Angels, falling 5-4. Garza pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: Garza has not posted consecutive wins since late May. However, in four starts this month he has surrendered just nine walks versus 25 strikeout.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 8/15, 10:39 PM CT
Matt Garza took a no-hitter into the sixth inning Friday and finished the game by allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out nine in a shutout of the Rangers.

Our View: This is Garza's fourth complete game and second shutout of the season. He now boasts a 3.63 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 8/4, 9:23 PM CT
Matt Garza threw an ineffective game for Tampa Bay, pitching five innings and giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks.

Our View: Garza threw a complete game shutout his last time out, and this was likely just a hiccup. Garza threw 102 pitches tonight, and has thrown at least that many pitches in nine of his last ten starts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 7/29, 9:12 PM CT
Tampa RHP Matt Garza enjoyed an oustanding performance on the mound tonight, going a full nine innings of shutout baseball to get the Rays the 3-0 win. Garza walked one and struck out five.

Our View: Garza appears to be struggling for consistency, now owning a record of 3-2 for July after going 2-3 in June. However, all three of his wins this months have been shutout victories, lasting seven or more innings in each.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 7/24, 10:12 PM CT
Matt Garza struggled through five innings of work in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Royals, as he allowed four earned runs on eight hits, with four walks and no strikeouts.

Our View: Garza has been inconsistent as of late, as he has been pulled after five innings in two of his last three outings. He tied his season-worst in walks tonight, and failed to register a strikeout for the first time.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 7/19, 9:03 PM CT
Matt Garza shut out the Blue Jays over 7 2/3 innings Saturday, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out six.

Our View: It's good to see Matt rebound from his poorest outing of the year. He's been terrific since May.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 7/17, 5:40 PM CT
Matt Garza will start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays in place of Scott Kazmir.

Our View: Garza is 7-5 with a 3.96 ERA this season. The second half will be a good barometer for Garza's ability to be a full-time starter. He had just over 80 innings pitched in the majors prior to this season. He currently has 102.1 IP this season.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 7/7, 3:36 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed three earned runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Royals at Tropicana Field, with two walks and five strikeouts. He left the game down 3-2, and ended with a no decision as the Royals rallied back to score four runs in the top of the 10th inning to win the game.

Matt Garza claimed his sixth win of the season in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Marlins, as he only surrendered one earned run on one hit over nine innings, with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Our View: That was his first complete game of the season, and his best outing since May 23, when he hurled 7.1 scoreless innings against the Orioles. This was also the second time he racked up 10 strikeouts.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 6/20, 11:35 PM CT
Matt Garza allowed four runs, three earned, to lose to the Astros on Friday night. Garza fell to 4-4 though he was able to pile up eight strikeouts on the night.

Our View: Garza has been all over the map with his K numbers with as many games with at least eight strikeouts in his last five outings (two) as games with three making it hard to know what you will be getting from start to start.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 6/14, 8:44 PM CT
Tampa Bay RHP Matt Garza picked up his fifth win of the season, leading the Rays to a 4-1 triumph over the Florida Marlins. Garza pitched seven strong innings giving up just one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 6/3, 1:00 PM CT
Matt Garza will make his 10th start of the season tonight against Boston at Fenway Park, according to MLB.com. He is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA in one start against Boston this season, but he is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in two career starts at Fenway Park.

Our View: Garza is 4-1 this season with a 3.78 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, and is worth consideration for your fantasy lineup tonight, namely when you consider his solid record against the Red Sox at Fenway, who will be without slugger David Ortiz.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 5/28, 2:49 PM CT
Matt Garza improved to 4-1 with an excellent outing against the Rangers on Wednesday. The right-hander allowed only four hits and two runs over eight innings. He also walked two and struck out 10. Garza owns a 2.52 ERA over six starts in May.

Our View: Good pitching has been contagious in Tampa, and Garza is in the thick of the Rays success. As long as he keeps his walks down, Garza can be a solid fantasy contributor.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 5/23, 9:03 PM CT
Matt Garza had no trouble taming the feeble Orioles' batting order Friday night, tossing 7 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and four walks with four punchouts. The righty picked up the win to run his record to 3-1 and ERA to 4.06.

Our View: Garza has been inconsistent this year, and the lack of strikeouts is puzzling (19 in 44 1/3 innings), but his overall results have been solid.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 5/17, 4:42 PM CT
Matt Garza failed to make it out of the fifth inning on Saturday versus the Cardinals. It ended what had been a brilliant run by Tampa starters. A run in which the rotation had combined for a 1.03 ERA.

Our View: Garza had nothing on Saturday, and his focus couldn't have been worse. He didn't trust his stuff and nibbled the entire afternoon.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 5/12, 10:20 PM CT
Matt Garza pitched seven scoreless innings and the upstart Tampa Bay Rays beat Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees 7-1 for their fifth consecutive victory Monday night.

Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 5/7, 9:05 PM CT
Matt Garza pitched extremely well on Wednesday night though he still picked up his first loss of the season. In 6.2 IP, Garza allowed one run on three walks and six hits.

Our View: Garza has now allowed just three runs over his last two starts and is starting to round into form for the Rays. This may be your last chance to get him on the cheap before he takes off, so keep that in mind if you need some help in the starting rotation.

Matt Garza claimed his first win of 2008 in Thursday's 4-2 win over Baltimore. He only allowed two runs on three hits over six innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Both earned runs came on an Adam Jones home run.

Our View: This was a strong outing for Garza, and he is safe to return to your lineups (following his bout with a forearm injury).
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/25, 11:07 PM CT
Right-hander Matt Garza, obtained along with shortstop Jason Bartlett in an offseason trade that sent Delmon Young to Minnesota, made his first start since leaving Tampa Bay's April 8 home opener with what the Rays described as radial nerve irritation in his pitching arm.

Our View: Garza gave up three runs, five hits and walked three in five innings. Owners should give him another week before inserting him into their roto-rotation.

Matt Garza is set to return to the Rays rotation tonight in his first game back from his forearm injury, according to MLB.com. Garza is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox.

Our View: Garza will be a fantasy risk in his first game back, but he has fared well against Boston, and he is worth a look if you really lack a better option on your roster for tonight.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 4/21, 7:56 AM CT
The Rays are expected to activate Matt Garza for a start against the Red Sox on Friday, the Tampa Tribune confirms. Garza is on the DL due to nerve irritation in his right forearm.

Our View: We can think of many better ideas than using a returning Garza against the Red Sox.

Rays starting pitcher Matt Garza came out of his first rehab start without issue, this according to MLB.com. It was his first start after landing on the disabled list on April 9, "I felt good. I got some good work in," said Garza. "The best part is I'm pain-free."

Our View: Garza, who was placed on the DL to a radial nerve injury, gave up eight hits and four earned runs in 3.w innings of work on Sunday. He struck out four and walked three. Garza might have felt fine but his command wasn't. The right-hander converted only 39 of his 70 pitches for strikes.

Matt Garza will make a rehab start at High-A Vero Beach on Sunday. He will throw four innings or roughly 60 pitches. If all goes well, Garza could be back in the Rays rotation by next Friday, the Tampa Tribune reports. He is out due to nerve irritation in his right arm.

Our View: Garza's timetable has quickly gone from six to four to two weeks. That seems like a quick return, and fantasy owners should count on him for next week.

Rays' starter Matt Garza threw 30 pitches off the bullpen mound today and came away pain free, this according to the Tampa Tribune. The radial nerve irritation that placed him on the 15-day disabled list was treated with an injection and has responded well. “I feel that good,” he said. “That’s my plan, but we’ll see what’s in store. Today is Day One of throwing off a mound. I felt good and I’m ready to get right back on it. Let’s go.”

Our View: Manager Joe Maddon also sounded optimistic that Garza would be able to pitch either against the Blue Jays at Disney on April 24 or against the Red Sox during the weekend series at Tropicana Field April 25-27.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 4/13, 10:02 PM CT
The Rays are offering up more optimistic news on Matt Garza. The right-hander is recovering well from radial nerve irritation in his right arm and could be back in 2-4 weeks, MLB.com reports.

Our View: This injury put a big damper in what we hoped would be a breakout season for the promising young right-hander. If he heals properly and is back around May 1, though, it would be excellent news.

Matt Garza could be out anywhere from four to six weeks, according to the St. Petersburg Times. Garza underwent an MRI exam on his right arm that he noted showed "everything's fine," but he won't throw for at least five days and will be re-evaluated in about two weeks. He added that he plans to be cautious in his comeback after seeing how former team-mate Francisco Liriano was injured. Jeff Niemann is believed to be called up from Triple-A to take Garza's spot in the Rays' rotation on Sunday.

The Rays placed Matt Garza on the DL after Tuesday's game with a radial nerve irritation, which is a problem near the triceps, according to the Tampa Tribune. Garza has had the ailment before but has always been able to pitch through it. “I’ve usually been able to get through it, just kind of pitch through it and wear the pain and get it right after the game and get my work in,” he said. “This time it was just real bad – I knew something was up.” The Rays recalled Jae Kuk Ryu from Triple-A Durham. Ryu will be used out of the bullpen the next few days, and Jeff Niemann is expected to be recalled to make the start on Sunday in Garza's place.

Matt Garza is set to make his first start with the Rays on Wednesday against Baltimore, according to MLB.com. He was notably the prized prospect acquired in the Delmon Young deal with the Twins, and he ended spring training with a solid 2.45 ERA over six starts. Manager Maddon commented, "He pitched primarily against some of the better teams during Spring Training and I saw some bad swings against him. His stuff is better than I had read about. When you see it in person, I didn't know the actual fastball was that good or the changeup was that good, either. I heard about the breaking ball. I think he understands what was given to him. I think he appreciates the opportunity."

With spring training winding down, the Rays are hoping to see some consistency from Matt Garza on Monday, staring against the Phillies, according to MLB.com. Matt Garza didn't impress in his first outing as a Ray. The ex-Twin needed 35 pitches to get through the first inning alone. Garza was knocked out of the game after he gave up one run on five hits allowed over 1 2/3 innings against Detroit. The Tampa prize of the six-player deal with the Twins will have his moments, but he will also have his hurdles, much like he did in his outing today.

With the acquisition of Matt Garza this offseason the team believes they have the youngest trio of talent in the league. Garza, Rays ace Scott Kazmir and James Shields make up the teams top three starters. According to SPTimes.com, Rays officials are comparing their three top starter to that of the A's in the early part of the decade. That trio included Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. The comparison is a stretch at this point, especially including Garza into the mix.

"We really haven't gone out to get hitters because we had hitters coming," GM Bill Smith said. "But now we have holes in our offense, and we need to do whatever we can to try to fill those holes." In addition to Garza, Scott Baker and Kevin Slowey are two other youngsters that could enter trade discussions this winter.

Matt Garza didn't have his best stuff on Tuesday night, but he still managed to limit the Tigers to just one unearned run in seven innings of a tough-luck loss. Garza told the Minneapolis Star Tribune he felt terrible after the first inning because his fastball didn’t have it's usual life. "That's what I was sent down to [the minor leagues] to do, work on establishing my fastball and be able to change speeds when I need," he said.

The Twins called up Matt Garza following Thursday's win over the Blue Jays. The team's top prospect will work out of the bullpen before making a start against the White Sox during the doubleheader on July 6, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He’s starting to get a little frustrated, so we bring him up here, give him a chance to pitch for us right here," manager Ron Gardenhire explains. Garza, 23, was 4-6 with a 3.62 ERA over 16 starts at Triple-A Rochester.
Matt Garza, P, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 6/21, 9:26 AM CT
Matt Garza’s numbers are not that impressive at Triple-A Rochester, but Twins minor league director Jim Rantz sees progress. “He’s going to be back [in the major leagues]; it’s just a matter of when,” Rantz told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Hopefully the next time he goes back, he’s there to stay.” After a brief quibble with the organization about his failure to mix in enough off-speed stuff, Garza is reportedly back to throwing all four of his pitches while touching up to 96 miles per hour with his fastball. He is just 3-6 with a 3.71 ERA, but has shown signs of progress in recent starts.

Though nothing has been made official yet, the Twins will almost certainly call up starter Kevin Slowey from Triple-A to start on Friday in the rotation spot vacated by Ramon Ortiz. That means that phenom Matt Garza will have been bypassed for the third time this season, and Garza is showing his frustration. Last week, Garza criticized Twins management for telling him to throw more off-speed pitches. “It’s immaturity and frustration,” pitching coach Rick Anderson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “He’ll get over it. Maybe he needed to vent.” Garza is 2-5 with a 3.21 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 56 innings at Triple-A Rochester, while Slowey has a 1.54 ERA and 57-5 K/BB ratio in 64 innings.
