Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 1/26, 5:09 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva and the Brewers have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Haudricourt.

Our View: Terms of the deal have not yet surfaced. While Villanueva did display his versatility last year, serving as a starter, middle reliever, setup man and closer at various points of the season, he wasn't particularly effective in any of the roles. There's no need for fantasy owners to bother with Villanueva.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 10/3, 3:36 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva allowed four runs in five sloppy innings in St. Louis on Saturday, but picked up his fourth win of the season thanks to six early Brewer runs in the team's 6-5 win.

Our View: Villanueva finishes the season with a 5.34 ERA in 96 innings pitched. He's still only 25 years old, but after four years in the big leagues, it's hard to see him getting much better.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 8/17, 9:48 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva was hammered for six earned runs on 11 hits over a mere four innings in Monday's 9-5 loss at Pittsburgh. He had one walk and two strikeouts, and gave up two homers.

Our View: Villanueva was handed his 10th loss of 2009 following his nightmarish outing. He is not an option outside of deeper fantasy leagues.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 8/12, 11:02 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva wasn't bad for a Brewers starter on Wednesday, allowing just two runs in 5.2 innings, but it sill wasn't enough, as Milwaukee lost 6-5 to the Padres at home.

Our View: If nothing else, Villanueva likely earned himself another start with his near quality start Wednesday night. With it tentatively coming against the Pirates next Monday, there are worse players you could add.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 8/11, 2:10 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva will start on Wednesday for the Brewers against the Padres, according to MLB.com. Villanueva has struggled this season to the tune of nine losses and a 6.05 ERA.

Our View: Manager Ken Macha decided to go with Villanueva over Mike Burns on Wednesday, which says more about Burns than it does Villanueva. Unless you are a relative or close, person friend, you should not even think about having Villanueva on your fantasy squad.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 8/7, 10:11 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva didn't' give the Brewers a chance to win en route to his ninth loss on Friday, allowing four runs in 5.1 innings, as Milwaukee lost 6-3 in Houston.

Our View: Villanueva's ERA is now a rotten 6.05, and the team's experiment with him in the starting rotation has been a disaster. Don't expect it to last too much longer.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 8/2, 8:04 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva tossed five shutout innings and allowed just two hits and four walks against the Padres on Sunday. He fanned three, but did not earn a decision in the Brewers' 6-1 win.

Our View: Villanueva is just 2-8 on the season with an ERA dangerously close to 6.00. He's only started two games this season since moving to the rotation at the end of July and has been good in one and awful in the other. The book is still out on him.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 7/28, 11:13 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva got pounded by the lowly Nationals on Tuesday as the Brewers fell for the second straight night. Villanueva went only four innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.

Our View: The Brewers are in big trouble with their pitching staff right now, as Villanueva can't be considered an option anymore. With Jeff Suppan going down with an injury, the team will need to find a starter soon or they are going to fall out of the Central race. Don't expect to see much more from Villanueva, as he has been terrible everywhere the Brewers have tried him this season.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 7/27, 5:50 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva has been slated to start Tuesday's game against the Nationals, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: Villanueva is 2-7 with a 6.18 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 43.2 innings of relief, and is only worth a look for deeper NL-only leagues for Tuesday's start.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/7, 4:28 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in the ninth inning on Sunday and it cost the Brewers a win. They fell to the Braves 8-7.

Our View: Villanueva now has four blown saves on the season to go with his disappointing 2-4 record. He won't be stealing many save opportunities from Trevor Hoffman, especially after this performance.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 4/29, 3:21 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva picked up his second save of the season on Wednesday with the Brewers holding back Trevor Hoffman to make sure he is fully recovered from his oblique issue.

Our View: Don't go panicking if you have Hoffman, this is just an admission by the Brew Crew that they want to ease Hoffman back into the ninth inning role. Once Hoffman proves he is healthy, he should get the vast majority of save chances for the club.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/11, 10:32 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva took a one run lead into the ninth inning Saturday and promptly gave it up. He allowed two runs on two hits, including a two-run shot to Alfonso Soriano and the Brewers fell to the Cubs 6-5.

Our View: Villanueva got his first blown save and his first loss of the season in the same inning. He's filling in for Trevor Hoffman until he returns from injury, but may not keep his temp job long if he has too many outing like this.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 4/9, 12:27 AM CT
Carlos Villanueva got the save in the Brewers 4-2 win over the Giants on Wednesday. He tossed a perfect ninth inning and struck out two.

Our View: Villanueva is filling in for the injured Trevor Hoffman, but could be a decent closing option for your fantasy team. The book is still out on how long Hoffman will be on the DL and if Villanueva is effective enough he may keep the job.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/29, 12:51 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva may replace the ailing Trevor Hoffman as the Brewers' closer for the start of the season, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Villanueva said, "Hopefully, we will get Trevor back quick. But if I get the opportunity, of course I would consider it an honor to do that job. As long as I keep doing what I am doing now, I will be fine. I never panicked. I feel more comfortable out there now."

Our View: Hoffman could be on the shelf until at least mid-April while recovering from a strained oblique. Villanueva fired 93 strikeouts over 108.1 innings in 2008, while maintaining a 1.31 WHIP. He would be worth a look for NL-only leagues until Hoffman comes back.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 2/8, 3:15 PM CT
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel states that Carlos Villanueva figures to be the Brewers' top setup man behind closer Trevor Hoffman.

Our View: Villanueva has to earn the spot, and will be pushed by David Riske, Jorge Lugo and potentially Todd Coffey.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 8/31, 8:30 AM CT
Brewers reliever Carlos Villanueva is upset with Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who did not appreciate it when Villanueva apparently made some gestures towards the Cardinals dugout and let Villanueva know it, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I think sometimes he thinks he’s bigger than the game. He’s not. ... I used to have a lot of respect for Pujols. Now, I’ve lost some of that respect. I don’t know why he would say those things about me. They’re not true. I have respect for the game," Villanueva said.

Our View: This is hilarious coming from a guy with a career record of 14-13 and an ERA over 4.00, while Pujols is a future Hall of Fame player.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 6/1, 8:51 AM CT
Carlos Villanueva is currently working as a reliever, but he still envisions himself as a starter in the long run. So do the Brewers. "(Manager Ned Yost) said he still sees me as a starter (at some point)," Villanueva informs the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. The 24-year-old right-hander posted a 6.43 ERA over nine starts before being moved to the bullpen.

Our View: Villanueva pitched well as a long relief guy in 2007 and has sharpened up since returning to the bullpen this year. He profiles as a starter, but his relief work suggests he could end up pushing for a valuable late-inning role down the road. Anyway, Villanueva still has some value in NL-only and in keeper leagues.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 5/26, 4:06 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva threw two scoreless innings, striking out five of the six hitters he faced, and the Milwaukee Brewers survived extra innings to defeat the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Monday afternoon.

Our View: Villanueva, is now a long reliever for the Brew Crew. His appearance today was only his second relief stint after starting nine games in April and May. The right-hander has little fantasy value, and none in traditional formats.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 5/18, 4:58 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva was hit hard yet again as the Red Sox piled up six runs, five earned, in four innings. Carlos fell to 2-5.

Our View: Villanueava has allowed five or more earned runs in three of his last four outings, and those might be Jeff Weaver's footsteps you hear in the background.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 5/8, 10:14 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva lasted five innings on Thursday night, but it was a brutal five innings as he issued two walks, allowed 10 hits and was beaten for seven runs to fall to 1-4 on the year.

Our View: Boy are the Brewers going to miss Yovani Gallardo. If Villanueva keeps struggling, the team might call up Jeff Weaver, who has looked pretty good in the minors.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 5/2, 11:19 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva retired the first 11 batters in Friday night's game against Houston, but suffered his third loss of the season in a 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Astros. The Brewers' right-hander allowed six runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out four in five innings of work.

Our View: Close to losing his rotation spot when Yovani Gallardo returned from a spring training knee injury, Villanueva did little to help himself in tonight's loss. His ERA rose to 5.56 over his six '08 starts.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSaturday 4/26, 9:25 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva got a no-decision despite allowing only two runs on six hits in six innings for the Brewers vs. Florida. He didn’t allow any walks and struck out five.

Our View: Villanueva has struggled to open the season, allowing at least two walks in each start leading up to Saturday. This is a great step for the talented youngster, but it still might be early for mixed-league owners to rely on him.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 4/21, 10:10 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva hurled a strong seven inning on Monday night as he allowed just two runs to the Cardinals in a no decision. Carlos allowed just three hits but four walks on the night.

Our View: Villanueva has a rather unimpressive 11 K in 23 innings on the year, and his ERA sits at 5.09, but with the way that David Bush has pitched Carlos may stay in the starting rotation a bit longer.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 4/16, 10:24 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva had problems on the night as he allowed eight hits and two BB in just 4.2 innings in his second loss of the year.

Our View: Villanueva had no punchouts on the night and he gave up two home runs including one to Adam Wainwright, and you don't need us to tell you that allowing home runs to pitchers isn't part of a successful formula.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersThursday 4/10, 2:58 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva was dealt his first loss of the season on Thursday, as he surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings against Cincinnati, with three walks and four strikeouts. Villanueva is believed to be a candidate to be sent down when Yovani Gallardo returns to the rotation, and this was not a good day for him in his bid to keep his job.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersWednesday 3/26, 8:34 AM CT
Carlos Villanueva will open the season as the fourth starter in the Brewers rotation, but he is a candidate to be sent down when Yovani Gallardo returns. "We have another tough decision to make in two weeks, once the season starts," manager Ned Yost tells the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We're going to have to see who's pitching good during that period, then make another decision." Villanueva will pitch the home opener on April 4 against the Giants. He is worth a roster spot in NL-only and keeper leagues, and mixed league owners many want to give him a shot against the weak Giants lineup.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/16, 11:43 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva a will continue his bid for a spot in the Brewers' starting rotation on Monday, the final split-squad date this spring for Milwaukee, according to MLB.com. The team has both Villanueva and fellow starting candidate Chris Capuano scheduled to pitch five innings with approximately 80 pitches in one of the final opportunities they will have to voice their worth for the job. Villanueva will face the White Sox with Capuano facing Mariners. This could be a big moment for both pitchers, so check back in to see how it goes.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/2, 5:43 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva tossed two scoreless innings Sunday, allowing one hit while striking out one. Villanueva is trying to win a spot in the Brewers rotation this spring and could be a nice sleeper if he comes away with a starting job.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 2/22, 10:47 AM CT
It remains unclear whether Carlos Villanueva will earn a spot in the rotation, work from the bullpen, or head to the minors when camp breaks, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I'm watching. I look for the smoke to clear and see where everybody ends up," manager Ned Yost said Thursday. "When it's done, it's going to be pretty clear. Then, you make your decision." He'll be prepped this spring as a starter, but he'll have to earn a spot in the rotation or bullpen with a quality spring performance.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 9/2, 9:01 AM CT
As expected, the Brewers recalled Carlos Villanueva from Triple-A Nashville before Saturday's game. However, he's now expected to join the rotation, not work out of the bullpen, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We'll stretch him out to 75 or 80 the first time, and then he'll be ready to go," manager Ned Yost said. "He's got six starts left, so he'll be OK - depending on how he does." He'll make the first of those starts on Tuesday versus the Astros.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersFriday 8/31, 11:43 AM CT
Carlos Villanueva will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville Saturday. Villanueva allowed three runs while striking out nine over 8 1/3 innings in two starts for Nashville. He'll be used as the long man out of the Milwaukee pen. "That's a big boost, just getting him back," manager Ned Yost said in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 8/21, 12:10 PM CT
The Brewers optioned Carlos Villanueva to Triple-A Nashville Tuesday. The right-hander held a 4.68 ERA while striking out 76 over 82 2/3 innings as the team's long man out of the bullpen. Seth McClung, whom the team acquired from the Devil Rays before the trade deadline, was recalled to replace Villanueva on the roster.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 3/27, 10:12 AM CT
Even after the acquisition of Elmer Dessens, Carlos Villanueva will still make the Brewers' opening day roster as a member of the bullpen, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "Read between the lines," managed Ned Yost said. "Carlos has had a very, very good camp."
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersSunday 3/18, 12:44 PM CT
Carlos Villanueva could begin the year in the bullpen rather than at Triple-A, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "He's different than a young guy," manager Ned Yost said. "You can see where pitching every five days would have a benefit for a guy like (Yovani) Gallardo, for Manny Parra, (Mike) Jones - some of these younger guys. But Carlos is at the stage of his career where he knows what he's doing. He knows how to pitch and he's ready to be in the big leagues." Villanueva holds a 2.70 ERA with 12 strikeouts and no walks in 10 spring innings.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersTuesday 3/13, 9:56 AM CT
Carlos Villanueva has allowed only three runs in 10 innings this spring, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I'm in season form right now," Villanueva said. "I've worked very hard in the off-season and I've worked hard here in preparing myself. I haven't heard anything from them, so my goal is to keep showing them that I can get the job done."
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 12/11, 9:19 PM CT
Brewers GM Doug Melvin said that Carlos Villanueva is probably the frontrunner for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, according to the team's website. Zach Jackson will provide competition.
Carlos Villanueva, P, Milwaukee BrewersMonday 9/11, 9:43 PM CT
The Brewers recalled Carlos Villanueva from Triple-A Nashville Monday, according to the AP. Villanueva was 7-1 with a 2.71 ERA in 11 games (nine starts) for Nashville after being promoted from Double-A. "He did real well (in Triple-A) and did well when he was up here," manager Ned Yost said. "Hopefully he can continue to progress. He's under consideration for making the staff next year." Villanueva will pitch out of the bullpen for the Brewers.
