Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 2/22, 5:19 PM CT
Edinson Volquez has been transferred to the 60-day DL by the Reds, according to their official twitter page.

Our View: Volquez was transferred to make room for outfielder Jonny Gomes on the 40-man roster. No surprise, as the young hurler is expected to miss most of the 2010 campaign while recovering from August Tommy John surgery.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 12/30, 4:53 PM CT
Edinson Volquez is set to begin throwing, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Volquez has been working hard, and is reportedly in great shape. This is encouraging, as the young hurler underwent Tommy John surgery in August. He should still miss most of the 2010 campaign though.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 8/3, 10:40 AM CT
Edinson Volquez underwent Tommy John surgery as scheduled on Monday, and he is expected to miss 12 months, according to the team's official Twitter page.

Our View: With the 12 month recovery time, it looks like Volquez will miss most, if not all, of the 2010 season. This was expected, but it is still terrible news for the Reds and for anyone who owns Volquez in a keeper league. If he does contribute next season, it will be minimal, so he should be off all fantasy radars for another year.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 8/1, 3:15 PM CT
Edinson Volquez will undergo right elbow surgery on Monday, the AP reports. He has been out since June 2 due to elbow tendinitis. At this point, it is not known what type of procedure will be performed. The Cincinnati Enquirer previously suggested that Volquez could need Tommy John surgery.

Our View: If Volquez undergoes ligament-replacement surgery, we assume he would miss all of 2010. This could be a huge blow to the Reds and to fantasy owners, especially those teams who own him in keeper leagues.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 7/24, 2:03 PM CT
Edinson Volquez threw another bullpen session on Friday, throwing both changeups and fastballs, according to MLB.com. He is slated to throw another on Monday, and if that goes well, could head out on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville

Our View: Volquez says he is pain-free, and barring a huge setback, should be back with the team in two or three weeks.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 7/20, 7:57 PM CT
Edinson Volquez, who is recovering from right elbow tendinitis, threw 30 pitches during a bullpen session Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Volquez reported no issues regarding his elbow, and will throw again on Wednesday and Friday. He threw at around 68 percent velocity today, and will amp up his intensity in his next sessions. Pitching coach Dick Pole was pleased with his pitch location today, and looks to be ready to start a rehab assignment soon.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 7/18, 5:10 PM CT
Edinson Volquez, who is recovering from right elbow tendinitis, made 30 long-toss throws from 120 feet today, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: The young hurler noted that he felt good with no pain. Volquez will throw off a mound Monday, and a pen session every other day. Barring a setback, he could then start a minor league rehab assignment soon after.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 7/16, 4:48 PM CT
Edinson Volquez could begin throwing off a mound by the end of next week, according to MLBlogs.

Our View: The Reds' young ace has been out since June 2 with right elbow tendinitis. If his session goes well next week, he'll likely head out on a rehab assignment soon after, and could be back in the bigs by early August. Stay tuned.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/30, 5:53 PM CT
Edinson Volquez (elbow tendinitis) has been given the green light to resume his throwing program, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Dr. Tim Kremchek cleared him after Volquez indicated that he no longer feels any pain his right elbow. He is hoping to return to the Reds soon after the All-Star break, barring a setback.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 6/24, 3:38 PM CT
A Tuesday MRI revealed inflammation in Edinson Volquez's injured right elbow and he has been ordered not to throw for a few days, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay.

Our View: A return before the All-Star break is now unlikely. Keep him stashed, but keep your hopes minimized, as well. He likely won't be the same for a while once he does return, and the likelihood of more setbacks exists.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/16, 4:23 PM CT
Edinson Volquez threw from 110 feet on Tuesday according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. The throws are a part of Volquez's recovery from right elbow tendinitis.

Our View: Volquez was having somewhat of a down year after his spectacular '08 season, but is still an elite pitcher and an integral part of the Reds chances of contending. His return is not imminent, though, and manager Dusty Baker has cautioned that "It's not around the corner. It's around a couple of corners." Stay tuned.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 6/12, 7:42 PM CT
Edinson Volquez has started long-tossing while recovering from right elbow tendinitis, according to MLB.com. Pitching coach Dick Pole said, "He said he has had no problem with his elbow, his forearm -- nothing. He felt fine."

Our View: This is good news, but there remains no timetable for Volquez's return to Cincinnati. He is first eligible to come off the DL on June 17.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/2, 4:56 PM CT
After lasting only one inning against the Cardinals on Monday in his first start back from the disabled list, Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez is headed back to the DL with right elbow tendinitis according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is terrible news for the Reds and Volquez fantasy owners who were both surely looking for a lift from the gifted Volquez. For now, he is back on the 15-day DL and to refrain from all baseball related activity for at least the next 7-10 days. Reliever Jared Burton has been recalled from Triple-A Louisville to take his roster spot. The Reds have not said who will make Volquez's next start.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 6/2, 7:34 AM CT
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Edinson Volquez is heading back to Cincinnati to have his hand examined. Volquez left Monday's game against the Cardinals after only one inning with numbness in his pinky and ring fingers on his right hand.

Our View: This seems like a pretty strange injury, so it will be interesting to see what the results are from the doctor. Owners need to keep a close eye on this situation, as a DL stint seems like a possibility.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 6/1, 8:19 PM CT
Edinson Volquez exited Monday's battle at St. Louis after only one inning of work, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: The young hurler left the game with numbness in the pinky and ring fingers on his right hand. He will be evaluated by the Reds Tuesday. Volquez just came off the DL today following his bout with back spasms.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 6/1, 3:09 PM CT
Edinson Volquez has been activated from the disabled list as expected and will start Monday night for the Reds in St. Louis.

Our View: Volquez will oppose Cardinals' righty Todd Wellemeyer tonight. Fantasy owners can feel free to start Volquez tonight, especially against a Cards' lineup that has struggled to produce runs consistently over the past few weeks.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 5/27, 4:58 PM CT
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Edinson Volquez threw 87 pitches in a successful bullpen session on Wednesday.

Our View: Volquez says he feels good and is ready to return to the rotation on Monday. He will face the Cardinals in his return to action.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 5/26, 11:07 AM CT
Edinson Volquez threw a bullpen session Monday without any issues, and he feels ready to come of the DL following his bout with back spasms, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Volquez is first eligible to be activated June 1, and should come back on that day, barring a setback.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 5/21, 4:50 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, the Reds have placed starter Edinson Volquez on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms. The move is retroactive to Sunday and he will be eligible to return on June 1st.

Our View: Apparently the back spasms were not as minor as Volquez let on. Still, the MRI just revealed muscular damage and the team doesn't want to take any chances. He should just miss one start barring any setbacks. The Reds called up Homer Bailey to take Volquez's spot in the rotation.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 5/20, 4:16 PM CT
According to MLBBlogs.com, Edinson Volquez cut his bullpen session very short on Wednesday due to back spasms. He told manager Dusty Baker that he should not make his next start.

Our View: Volquez had been saying the injury was minor, but it was obviously bad enough to keep him from throwing more than a few pitches today. He doesn't appear to be headed for the DL, so sit him now and wait for him to make his next start.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 5/18, 5:01 PM CT
Edinson Volquez is not expected to miss a start after leaving his last start with back spasms, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Volquez is getting treatment on his back, and the injury looks to be minor as expected. He should be good to go in his next start, so fantasy owners can feel free to keep him in the lineup.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 5/16, 11:11 PM CT
Edinson Volquez left the game in the sixth inning with what appeared to be a back injury. He was replaced by Mike Lincoln in the game.

Our View: This injury doesn't look serious, but we will keep you updated on his condition. Don't look for him to miss any time, but if the injury is worse that expected we will let you know.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 5/5, 9:47 PM CT
The Marlins have to frustrated with Edinson Volquez. He limited them to just three hits and four free passes over eight shutout innings on Tuesday night. Volquez struck out seven as the Reds cruised to a 7-0 win.

Our View: Volquez has now had three good starts and three bad starts this season. The good news is the three good starts have come in his last four outings, including back to back eight-inning performances where he didn't allow a run. He's now four and two on the year with a 3.47 ERA and nearly a strikeout per inning.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 4/29, 9:02 PM CT
Edinson Volquez twirled a gem in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Astros. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out six in eight shutout innings.

Our View: It hasn't been a pretty start to the season for Volquez, but he was mostly untouchable tonight. He had issued 20 walks in his first 20.1 innings of work, but he seemed focused on throwing strikes tonight. When his control is on, he is a very effective young pitcher.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 4/24, 10:32 PM CT
Edinson Volquez struggled immensely with his command on Friday, as he allowed just one hit but seven walks in his five innings of work. He was touched for three runs and was handed his second loss of the season as the Reds fell to the Braves 4-3.

Our View: Volquez did strike out seven in the start, but now has 20 walks along side 22 Ks this season. He has loads of talent, but needs to fix his command issues or his 6.20 ERA will continue to skyrocket.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 4/19, 5:47 PM CT
Edinson Volquez picked up the win as the Reds beat the Astros 4-2 on Sunday. He walked five, but struck out seven while allowing four hits and one earned run in six innings.

Our View: Volquez once again needed over 100 pitches to get 18 outs. He has walked 13 batters through 15.1 innings in three starts this season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 4/8, 11:26 PM CT
Edinson Volquez got tagged by the Mets for five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks in just 4.1 innings. His control failed him and he wound up taking the loss.

Our View: "Thomas" Edinson Volquez was dynamite last year in the first half, but limped down the stretch with a 4.60 ERA after the break. He started giving up the long ball and the wheels came off. Tread with caution until you find out which half was the real thing.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 4/2, 5:44 PM CT
Edinson Volquez allowed three runs on five hits in three and two-thirds versus the Pirates on Thursday. He struck out four batters and walked three.

Our View: Volquez allowed one more run than he had his seven previous outings, but manager Dusty Baker chalked up the struggles to lack of concentration, insisting his ace is ready to go for the season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 3/23, 4:46 PM CT
Edinson Volquez did not allow a run in five innings against the Blue Jays on Monday. He also finished his outing with five strikeouts.

Our View: After a blistering start to the season in 2008, the 25-year-old Volquez tailed off a bit, but not much. Over the last two months of the season, his ERA rose from 2.82 to 3.29, but with a full year of experience under his belt, he should be a valuable fantasy pick worthy of a roster spot in all leagues.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 3/18, 3:39 PM CT
Edinson Volquez threw three scoreless innings in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Rays, with six hits allowed, two walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Volquez is capable of being an ace for the Reds, but should not be drafted too high, as he did not pitch as well over the second half of last season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 3/7, 2:11 PM CT
Edinson Volquez took the loss on Saturday as the Dominican Republic fell to the Netherlands 3-2. He gave up three runs, two hits, and two walks while striking out three in three innings of work.

Our View: Looking down the Netherlands lineup card, it's unlikely you'll recognize any of these names. Better was expected out of the DR's ace.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 3/3, 5:37 PM CT
Edinson Volquez looked pretty good as the starter in Team Dominican Republic's exhibition against Florida on Tuesday, giving up a solo shot to Jeremy Hermida but otherwise pitching a flawless two innings with two strikeouts.

Our View: Volquez's performance in the World Baseball Classic and through spring will be closely monitored by soon-to-be-drafting fantasy owners that want as much information as possible in deciding whether or not Volquez's breakout campaign last season was a fluke. So far, so good.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 2/25, 3:15 PM CT
Edinson Volquez looked sharp in Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Rays, as he threw two scoreless innings, with two hits allowed, one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: This is an encouraging first outing of the preseason for the 25-year-old hurler. He should be drafted among the top-50 fantasy starters at the position for 2009.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 2/19, 10:45 AM CT
Edinson Volquez, who led the Reds with 17 wins in 2008, is aiming to improve this season, according to MLB.com. He said, "I want another year like that, but better. I had a good year last year, but I can do better at a couple of things. I want to go deeper in the games. I do not want too many walks. And, I want to win more games."

Our View: The 25-year-old hurler could indeed improve this season, but be careful not to draft him too high or overpay in auctions, as he had trouble keeping the ball in the park over the second half of last season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 11/8, 1:40 PM CT
Young hurlers Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto will not be going anywhere, as they will not be traded, said Reds general manager Walt Jocketty, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: The two are likely to be brought up in any trade discussions with the Reds, but you simply can't trade young pitching anymore. Jocketty likely learned his lesson after his horrific trade of Dan Haren and Daric Barton for Mark Mulder in St. Louis.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 9/27, 7:46 PM CT
The Reds got good news on Saturday about Edinson Volquez's knee. An MRI showed that Volquez is suffering from tendinitis, according to the Reds' official web site.

Our View: What a year for Volquez who burst onto the scene with 17 wins and 206 strike outs in 196 innings. Volquez will be one of the top 10 pitchers taken in drafts in 2009.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 9/24, 5:43 PM CT
Edinson Volquez will be scratched from his final start of the season to rest his right knee according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Adam Pettyjohn will start in his place.

Our View: Volquez finishes 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA. He currently ranks second in the NL with 206 strikeouts and had one of the biggest breakouts of anyone in 2008.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 9/23, 10:18 PM CT
Edinson Volquez got win No. 17 Tuesday, limiting the Astros to just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out nine over 7 1/3 innings.

Our View: A 3.21 ERA, 17 wins and 208 strikeouts. Not bad for a late-round flyer, eh?
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 9/18, 9:55 PM CT
Edinson Volquez only allowed four runs on three hits in seven innings but took the loss in the Reds' 5-4 defeat.

Our View: Thursday's loss was the first for Volquez in eight starts. If he was on a better team Volquez might be getting some more pub for the NL Cy Young. Fantasy owners who selected Volquez found a diamond in the rough.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 9/13, 11:31 PM CT
Edinson Volquez only allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings in Saturday's 3-2 win over Arizona, with six walks and eight strikeouts. He exited the game with a 1-1 tie and was dealt a no decision.

Our View: Other than the six walks, it was another solid outing for him. He remains 16-5, and has not suffered a loss in seven straight starts.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 9/8, 11:56 PM CT
Edinson Volquez had 10 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work in a no-decision against the Brewers on Monday night. He allowed four runs on five hits as the Reds would go on to defeat the Brewers 5-4.

Our View: Volquez's monster season continues as he shows no signs of slowing down. Look for this youngster to be a force for years to come.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 9/3, 9:40 PM CT
Edinson Volquez had 13 strikeouts in Wednesday no-decision against the Pirates. Despite the strong performance the Reds fell to the Pirates 6-5.

Our View: Volquez's monster season continues as he shows no signs of slowing down. Look for this youngster to be a force for years to come.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 8/29, 10:37 PM CT
Edinson Volquez issued six earned runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings in Friday's 11-7 win over the Giants at the Great American Ballpark, with three walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: He suffered through a poor outing, but still claimed his 16th win of the season thanks to strong run support. He finished August with a 3-1 mark.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 8/20, 8:53 PM CT
Edinson Volquez and Kyle Lohse exchanged pitches high and tight, but Lohse was the one that got suspended for five games. The punishment seemed to surprise Reds manager Dusty Baker, according to Reds.com. "Five games and they didn't even kick him out of the game. Wow. The umpires don't kick him out but the league suspends him. That's a first, isn't it? I haven't seen that," said Baker.

Our View: Lohse got suspended, even though Volquez actually hit Cardinals infielder Felipe Lopez later in the game. Not to mention that the pitch Lohse threw to Volquez was a strike, as it hit his bat. Lohse has appealed his suspension.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 8/19, 10:16 AM CT
Edinson Volquez will not throw on Friday in Colorado when his turn in the rotation comes, according to the Dayton Daily News. The team simply wants to give Volquez an extra day of rest, and he will be in line to start on Saturday.

Our View: Volquez has been a gem for fantasy owners, who should not mind the Reds doing their part to keep the young right-hander healthy.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 8/17, 3:31 PM CT
Edinson Volquez hurled seven scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed, in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Cardinals, with four walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Other than the four free passes, he was dominant. He improves to 15-5, and has only issued one earned run over his last 13.2 innings (two starts).
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 8/12, 9:01 PM CT
Edinson Volquez won his 14th game of the year by throwing 6.2 innings, allowing one run and striking out five in the Reds 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View: Volquez had been shaky as of late, as his ERA had gone up every month of the season. This was a solid performance though, and maybe he'll get back on track.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 8/8, 8:48 PM CT
With the return of Aaron Harang on Sunday, Edinson Volquez will have his start pushed back to Tuesday, though he says talk of his being tired is overblown, according to MLB.com. "I feel good," he said. "I threw a good bullpen [session] today, and I feel like I can pitch."

Our View: Volquez has fallen on some hard times of late with an ERA approaching six in his last eight starts, but he is still on pace for 18 victories and 197 K, and those are startling numbers for a youngster with no major league success prior to the start of this season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 8/5, 9:18 PM CT
Reds RHP Edinson Volquez suffered through one of his worst outings of the season tonight, taking the 8-1 loss against the Brewers. Volquez pitched just five innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Our View: Volquez moves to 13-5 on the season with a 2.93 ERA. That's two losses over his last three starts, and while the shorter outings have been an issue all season long, the lack of progress in working later in games is concerning.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 7/30, 11:19 PM CT
Edinson Volquez improved to 13-4 on the year by holding the Astros to just a single earned run over 6.1 innings. Volquez did give up five runs on the night but he also only walked one in the outing.

Our View: This was the third straight game that Edinson has allowed four or more runs, and it was also his second straight game with two home runs allowed. He certainly isn't the pitcher he was earlier in the year, but there is no shame in that since there have been very few pitchers who were that dominating at any point in the past 20 years.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 7/25, 10:33 PM CT
Reds right-handed sensation Edinson Volquez went through his second bad outing in a row, giving up five runs in four innings while throwing 99 pitches.

Our View: Volquez's ERA as gone from 2.08 on July 1 to 2.77, and he is clearly not what he was at the beginning of the season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 7/20, 5:40 PM CT
It hasn't happened often, but Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez suffered through a horrific outing on the mound as his Reds fell 7-5 to the Mets. Volquez allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Put the official warning light on for those fearing the All-Star Game has ruined yet another arm. Volquez walked with no-decision, but the outing ranks as his worth since June 26th, one of just three losses on the season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 7/15, 10:42 PM CT
Edinson Volquez was hit hard in his All-Star Game debut, allowing a double to Justin Morneau and a home run to J.D. Drew in his one inning of work. He also struck out two batters.

Our View: Volquez has been dealing this season, but he was hurt by two power-hitting left-handed bats.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 7/13, 1:16 PM CT
Edinson Volquez will not be the National League starter for the All-Star Game, according to MLB.com. Volquez threw 114 pitches in Saturday's game.

Our View: Volquez certainly deserved to be considered for the honor considering the season he is having. He may still throw an inning in the game, however.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 7/12, 11:09 PM CT
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez put yet another strong outing on the mound this evening, helping his Reds to the dominating 8-2 win over the Brewers. Volquez pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Our View: Volquez now stands at 12-3 on the season with an impressive ERA of 2.29, though this is his first win over his last four starts.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 7/6, 3:17 PM CT
Edinson Volquez allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings in Sunday's close 6-5 win over the Nationals, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: Volquez improves to 11-3 with a 2.36 ERA. He was winless over his previous two starts.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsTuesday 7/1, 10:27 PM CT
Edinson Volquez surrendered three earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Pirates, with three walks and three strikeouts. He ended his outing with a no decision, and the game took 11 innings to decide.

Our View: Volquez has allowed eight earned runs over his last two starts. Now is a good time to try and steal him away for a reduced price before he gets back on track and generates strong numbers again.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsThursday 6/26, 9:07 PM CT
Edinson Volquez suffered his third loss of the season, lasting just 4.1 innings in the Reds 7-1 loss to Toronto. Volquez allowed seven runs, five of them earned, which raised his ERA to over 2.00 for the first time this season.

Our View: This was easily Volquez's worst outing of the year, and the only one he has given up more than three earned runs. The 24-year-old was clearly off, as he failed to strike out anybody for the first time this season. Volquez was bound to have a clunker at some point, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 6/20, 9:49 PM CT
Edinson Volquez won his 10th game of the season on Friday by holding the Yankees to just two runs over seven innings for the Reds. Volquez walked only one batter while striking out five Yanks on the evening.

Our View: Somebody stop this guy. Volquez continues to be just about the best story on the hill in baseball this year as he now owns a 1.71 ERA after 15 starts. Truly amazing.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsFriday 6/20, 1:30 PM CT
Edinson Volquez will be in action tonight against the Yankees in the Bronx, according to MLB.com. Volquez is 9-2 with a strong 1.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 88 innings, with 105 strikeouts.

Our View: He has allowed two or less earned runs in 14 of 15 starts, and has reached at least eight strikeouts seven times.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 6/14, 6:31 PM CT
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez hit the mound today and pitched another gem for his Reds, and once again the team failed to support his cause with proper relief pitching, falling 6-4 to Boston. Volquez lasted seven innings, surrendering three runs (two earned (on seven hits) with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Our View: Edinson now carries an ERA of 1.64 with just three home runs surrendered through 15 starts.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsMonday 6/9, 10:36 PM CT
Edinson Volquez allowed three runs for the first time all year Monday but still won his ninth game of the season. The righty gave up three hits and five walks while striking out five.

Our View: Well, we guess Volquez was due for a "bad" start. In all seriousness, the 24-year-old is probably due for a rough patch shortly, so selling high on him might not be a bad idea.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsWednesday 6/4, 9:37 PM CT
Cincinnati RHP Edinson Volquez was strong off the hill in support of the 2-0 win over the Phillies this evening. Volquez pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View: This bring Volquez to a dominating 1.32 ERA on the season and is now 4-1 over his last seven starts.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSunday 5/25, 9:30 PM CT
It boggles in the mind, but on an evening that laid witness to the Reds pushing 10 different pitchers to the mound in an 18-inning marathon with the San Diego Padres, RHP Edinson Volquez walked off the mound with the loss.

Our View: Volquez came in after fellow starter Aaron Harang completed four shutout innings, worked one inning without issue, and then surrendered the walk-off home run to Adrian Gonzalez in the bottom of the 18th for the loss. Volquez finished with 1 2/3 innings pitched with one walk, two strikeouts, and just his second loss of the season.
Edinson Volquez, P, Cincinnati RedsSaturday 5/24, 7:39 PM CT
The legend of Edinson Volquez continues to grow. The rookie recorded his sixth quality piece of work in ten starts this season and he still hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a start.

Our View: Volquez found out what it would be like to throw his home games in PETCO instead of Great American Park on Friday night. His ERA is now 1.34 and his K/9 is a ridiculous 11.04. One would be hard pressed to find a rookie pitcher that had a 4.77 BB/9 ratio with a 1.21 WHIP after 10 starts in the history of the league.

Edinson Volquez improved to 6-1 thanks to holding the Marlins to a single run in six innings. Volquez also allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

Our View: With a fastball/changeup combo that makes him look like a right-handed Johan Santana, Volquez continues his march to the all-star game, an amazing statement to make for a guy who was 3-11 record and 7.20 ERA in his career before this season.

Edinson Volquez failed to win his fifth straight game in a 2-0 loss to the Braves on Friday night. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two.

Our View: One of the runs Volquez allowed was unearned and he finished the Friday loss with a 1.27 ERA. A very good outing for the Reds' rookie, but without any run support he was never in a position to receive a win.

While Johnny Cueto was the hot topic during March drafts, Edinson Volquez has been the most impressive of the two rookies. Volquez improved to 4-0 on Saturday and has a 1.23 ERA in April after seven strong innings against the Triple-A Giants.

Our View: While Cueto has complete command of his arsenal, he's subject to giving up the long ball. Volquez has turned from avoiding contact to essentially being a groundball pitcher. With a GB Rate approaching 60%, he will have much more success at Great American than his rookie teammate.

Edinson Volquez will open the season as the Reds No. 5 starter, the Cincinnati Enquirer notes. The 24-year-old right-hander has had a strong spring after coming over in the Josh Hamilton trade. He didn't pan out in his three brief major league stints with the Rangers, but we have higher hopes with the Reds. At the least, Volquez has become an interesting keeper league candidate.

The Reds continue to express pleasure with RHP Edinson Volquez who has been a shining light in spring training and once again looked solid in Cincy’s loss to Philadelphia (6-2) in the Grapefruit League today. Volquez allowed just three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings. In one of the more open and competitive rotation battles in the majors this season, Volquez has made his mark and seems well on his way to making noise in the show. “Volquez was awesome,” said manager Dusty Baker, speaking about the hurler after today’s loss. “It was an awesome display. Their hitters were talking. They couldn’t pick up his pitches. He is just what the scouts said he was when they traded (Josh) Hamilton for him.” Those are strong votes of confidence from a man that has seen far too many pitchers go south to throw around such words with ease, and it appears this kid needs to be tracked moving forward.

Edinson Volquez was the winning pitcher for the Reds on Wednesday as he allowed four hits and one walk in 2.1 innings. Though he allowed too many baserunners, he didn't allow the Red Sox to push any runs across the plate. Volquez is in a heated battle for the Reds fifth rotation spot, so the fact that he was able to work around the baserunners he allowed today has to be seen in a very positive light with the Reds brass.

Edinson Volquez was so close to having a terrific spring debut, but things went sour quickly. The righty retired the first five batters he faced in order, but then he hit the Rays' Jonny Gomes with a pitch and ended up allowing three runs on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 frames. The Reds plan on letting five guys compete for the final two spots in the rotation. Homer Bailey has to be considered a heavy favorite for one of the spots, but he'll have to hold off Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto Jeremy Affeldt and Matt Maloney. Volquez, acquired from Texas in the Josh Hamilton trade, threw for the first time Monday. "He needs to work on his off-speed stuff," Jose Valentin, who caught Volquez,. said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It was his first day. Maybe he was trying to impress. But he's got a good arm. His fastball moves. He's got a real live arm. That's what you need. Put him in the bullpen or whatever."

The Rangers were originally planning to recall Edinson Volquez this week, but the team has decided to leave him in the minors for now, according to the Dallas Morning News. The main reason for the change in plans is that Volquez missed a scheduled bullpen session with Triple-A pitching coach Andy Hawkins on Sunday. "A lot of the program we put in place for him was not only for on the field but off-field as well," general manager Jon Daniels said by phone. "Being professional and accountable. We're trying to hold him to a high standard. We explained to him why we weren't calling him up, and he was remorseful and apologetic to his teammates."
