Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 1/24, 5:23 PM CT
CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies and catcher Carlos Ruiz avoided arbitration by agreeing to a three-year, $9 million deal.

Our View: Ruiz is 31 and hit .255 with nine homers and 43 RBIs in 107 games last year. He's a fine No. 2 catcher, but he's probably already reached his ceiling.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 9/30, 11:32 AM CT

Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 9/28, 6:52 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz may be ready to rejoin the Phillies' lineup Tuesday following his bout with a wrist injury, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Paul Bako has a hit in six straight games, but Ruiz would return as the starter tomorrow if ready. Ruiz is hitting .338 over his last 28 games.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 9/25, 9:00 AM CT
Carlos Ruiz isn't likely to catch this weekend as he deals with an injured left wrist, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: He's received a pain-killing injection in the wrist, but will likely be rested much of the next ten days so he can be as fresh and healthy as possible for the playoffs. Paul Bako will continue to catch for the Phils in Ruiz's absence.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 9/23, 3:47 PM CT
Updating a previous report, the MRI on the injured left wrist of Phillies' catcher Carlos Ruiz showed no structural damage, according to Todd Zolecki. Ruiz could get a shot in the wrist tomorrow, and he would miss 3-to-5 days is he does so.

Our View: This is actually pretty good news for the Phils, as this injury could have been much worse. He is only expected to miss a few games, and the should be fine for the postseason if he doesn't hurt the wrist further.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 9/23, 2:25 PM CT
According to the Twitter page of Phillies' beat writer Todd Zolecki, catcher Carlos Ruiz has flown back to Philadelphia to have his injured wrist examined by team doctors. Ruiz is expected to rejoin the team when the head to Milwaukee for their next series.

Our View: This isn't a good sign for the Phils, as they can't afford an injury to a starter this close to the playoffs. Paul Bako will likely take over while Ruiz is out, and we will keep you updated on the severity of the injury when it is released.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 9/18, 8:51 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz was forced out of Friday's game at Atlanta due to a sprained left wrist, according to Andy Martino's (Philadelphia Inquirer) twitter page.

Our View: Paul Bako replaced Ruiz at catcher. The severity of the injury is yet to be determined.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 9/15, 9:14 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in Tuesday's 5-0 blanking of the Nationals.

Our View: Ruiz is by no means a fantasy stalwart, but the Phils backstop is hitting .378 with five doubles and seven RBI this month. He may be a nice option if you need a hot catcher down the stretch in head to head leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 8/30, 10:59 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz was the offensive hero for the Phillies on Sunday. His 3-for-3 effort and two-run double gave the club a 3-2 win against the division rival Braves.

Our View: Ruiz isn't know for his bat, but the backstop is hitting .305 in August with three homers and 11 RBI. Not bad considering he his just over .170 in June and July.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/7, 10:53 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in the Phillies' convincing 7-2 win over the Dodgers on Sunday.

Our View: Ruiz has been very good since coming off the DL in early May. He has his average up to .309 and has chipped in with three homers and 13 RBI this season. He doesn't have a ton of pop, but he's a decent fantasy option at a weak position, especially in NL-only leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 5/27, 9:27 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz homered in the Phillies' 6-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday. It was a solo shot and his only hit in four trips.

Our View: Ruiz is hitting .280 with two homers and nine RBI in a season that has been shortened by injury and he's not worth much more than a look in deep NL-only leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 5/14, 4:26 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz reached base all four times he came to the plate on Thursday in the Phillies' 5-3 ten inning loss to the Dodgers. Ruiz went 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.

Our View: Ruiz provided most of the Phillies' offense today, but it wasn't enough. Hits were hard to come by in today's pitchers' duel, which makes it even more impressive that he reached base all four times he batted. He still has very limited fantasy value, however.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 5/2, 3:15 PM CT
The Phillies have activated catcher Carlos Ruiz (oblique) from the 15-day DL.

Our View: Lou Marson had a bit of early success while Ruiz was out, but the Phillies are happy to have their starter back. As a unit, Phillies catchers are hitting .214 with no homers, four RBI, and four runs this year. Ouch.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 4/29, 7:15 PM CT

Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 4/23, 12:03 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz will likely begin a rehab assignment at some point this weekend, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. He is recovering from a strained oblique.

Our View: The rehab stint is expected to last around four games, and he could return to Philadelphia at some point next week, barring a setback. Ruiz should resume his role as the Phillies' No. 1 catcher.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 4/20, 8:20 AM CT
The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that Carlos Ruiz took 20 swings in the batting cage and played catch in the outfield prior to Sunday's game. Ruiz said he hopes to return to the lineup "soon". He is eligible to come off the DL Sunday.

Our View: Ruiz should regain his job as the number one catcher upon his return. His fantasy value is limited to either a backup or low end starter in deep NL-only leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 4/16, 9:37 AM CT
Manager Charlie Manuel told the Philadelphia Inquirer that it will be at least two weeks before catcher Carlos Ruiz returns to the lineup. He is currently on the DL with an oblique injury.

Our View: Ruiz figures to once again be the Phillies primary catcher upon his return. In regards to fantasy, he is little more than a No. 2 option.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 4/11, 5:18 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Carlos Ruiz has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a right oblique strain.

Our View: Chris Coste should get the majority of the starts in Ruiz's absence, but the Phillies called up their catching prospect Lou Marson for insurance.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSaturday 4/11, 10:45 AM CT
Though he was not yet sure of the severity of the injury, manager Charlie Manuel speculated that Carlos Ruiz could miss 1-2 weeks with his oblique strain, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News.

Our View: Catching prospect Lou Marson boarded an airplane to Denver last night as a precaution. We'll let you know when we hear more, but it sounds pretty likely that Ruiz is DL-bound.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 4/10, 7:21 PM CT
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Carlos Ruiz left Friday's game with an oblique strain. Details of the injury have not been released. He is considered day-to-day.

Our View: Ruiz missed a good chunk of spring training with a pinched nerve in his neck, and now this. He's not really a desirable fantasy catcher anyway, but with the injury concerns you're better off with someone else as your backstop.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesWednesday 3/11, 9:10 AM CT
Carlos Ruiz is set to return to the diamond today in the Grapefruit League against the Braves after suffering a pinched nerve in his neck while representing Panama in the WBC, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: Ruiz returns in plenty of time to hold off Ronny Paulino for the No. 1 role at catcher. He can be solid defensively, but Ruiz may leave a bit to be desired as a fantasy catcher, and should be left for NL-only leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 3/8, 7:39 AM CT
Carlos Ruiz sustained a pinched nerve in his neck while representing Pamana in the World Baseball Classic Saturday, according to Scout.com.

Our View: If healthy, Ruiz is slated to be the Phillies' No. 1 catcher. Ronny Paulino is currently their primary backup. We will keep you posted when Ruiz's status is updated.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesTuesday 2/24, 6:32 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz and the Phillies have agreed to terms on a split contract that will pay the catcher $475,000 in the majors and $255,000 if he plays in the minors, according to MLB.com.

Our View: With Ruiz's deal, now every player on the Phillies' 40-man roster is signed.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 1/29, 3:17 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz has decided to represent Panama in the upcoming World Baseball Classic after recently pulling himself out of the tournament to devote more time to training with the Phillies, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Perhaps Ruiz changed his mind after the Phillies already named him their starting catcher for 2009.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesMonday 1/26, 9:41 AM CT
GM Ruben Amaro Jr. indicated that Carlos Ruiz is slated to be the Phillies' starting catcher for opening day, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: This news improves his fantasy stock a bit, while lowering the value of newly acquired Ronny Paulino. The club still has Chris Coste fighting for playing time as well, which is likely why Ruiz decided not to play in the World Baseball Classic and devote his time to the Phillies. Ruiz is better defensively than offensively, meaning he is only worth a look in NL-only leagues.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesFriday 1/23, 2:28 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz has decided not to represent Panama in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Phillies' pitchers and catchers are set to report to Clearwater, Florida, on February 14, and Ruiz's top priority is with the club, although they were 100 percent supportive of him playing in the WBC.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 10/26, 4:30 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz was the Game 3 hero for Philadelphia on early Sunday morning. The catcher went 2-for-3 with two RBI including a bases loaded infield single to drive home the game-winning run in the ninth inning. He also scored a run and drew a walk.

Our View: Ruiz is 4-for-8 with four walks through three games of the World Series. He may be the least likely hero on a big name offense, but he has come through early and often in the biggest series for the Phillies in nearly 20 years.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/1, 1:05 PM CT
Carlos Ruiz is not in the lineup for Sunday's tilt with the Marlins, but his left hand is fine. "I'm ready to go," Ruiz tells MLB.com. "I feel very good." He took a pitch off the hand on Saturday. Chris Coste is starting in his place on Sunday.

Our View: It sounds like Ruiz is safe to use for the fantasy week ahead.
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesSunday 6/1, 9:20 AM CT

"It's better. I was worried [Wednesday night, when he first experienced discomfort] but now I feel better."
Carlos Ruiz, C, Philadelphia PhilliesThursday 3/22, 8:43 AM CT
