Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/29, 4:33 PM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, shortstop Brendan Ryan is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Reds due to a bruised finger and bruised right hand.

Our View: Ryan left Sunday's game when he was hit on the hand by a pitch while trying to bunt. He's been a bit banged up all year, so the Cards are likely giving him extra time to heal up before the playoffs. Julio Lugo will fill in at short.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 9/27, 10:32 PM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, shortstop Brendan Ryan exited Sunday's game in the sixth inning with a bruised finger.

Our View: Ryan was hit in the hand by a pitch while attempting to bunt and was forced to leave the game. The team is saying it is a separate injury from the sprained pinky he suffered earlier in the week and he's being considered day-to-day. He was replaced mid at-bat by Joe Thurston.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/23, 5:59 PM CT
Brendan Ryan is again out of the Cardinals lineup on Wednesday as he deals with a sore finger, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: With a ten-game lead in the NL central, the Cardinals see no reason in playing him at this point if he is sore. Julio Lugo will start at shortstop on Wednesday.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/22, 4:57 PM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, slick-fielding shortstop Brendan Ryan is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Astros.

Our View: Ryan is healthy, but with right-hander Yorman Bazardo on the mound tonight, manager Tony LaRussa is stacking the lineup with lefties. This is a typical move out of LaRussa. Ryan Ludwick is sitting in this one as well and it seems like the manager is more concerned with lefty-righty matchups and looking like a genius than putting the best players on the field. Ryan will be replaced by Julio Lugo and should be back in a day or two.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/19, 5:47 PM CT
Brendan Ryan was the hero on Saturday. He homered in the 5th inning and then drove in the game-winning run with a base hit in the bottom of the ninth for a 2-1 walk-off winner over the rival Cubs.

Our View: Ryan, known more for his flashy glove work than his bat, rose to the occasion on Saturday. He was 3-for-4 on the day and drove in both Cardinal runs. The homer was his third of the season.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 9/15, 4:55 PM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Brendan Ryan has been scratched from the Tuesday's game due to a jammed finger.

Our View: Ryan apparently jammed the finger while sliding back into first base in Monday's game against the Marlins. He is likely out until Friday and is being replaced by Julio Lugo at shortstop. Lugo will hit second, while Skip Schumaker gets a rare start in the leadoff spot against a left-hander on Tuesday.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 8/27, 1:21 PM CT
Brendan Ryan is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's game against the Astros, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Our View: Ryan is getting the day off because Tony LaRussa claims he doesn't want him to get worn out. Although Ryan is 27 and doesn't play every day, so there isn't much risk of him tiring. Chalk this up to another LaRussa "hunch". Julio Lugo will start in his place and play short.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 8/20, 11:53 PM CT
Brendan Ryan's first career grand slam helped propel the Cardinals to their seventh win in eight games, as the Birds on Bat won 5-1 in San Diego.

Our View: The home run was only Ryan's sixth career homer. Quick becoming known for his sterling defense, Ryan now has nine RBI in August, the most he has had in any month this season.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 8/20, 12:38 AM CT
Brendan Ryan went 3-for-5 with a triple and an RBI in the Cardinals' 3-2 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday. Ryan is hitting .292 this season.

Our View: Ryan has been a huge sparkplug for the Cards this season, and he has his way of makin a mark on nearly every game he plays in. He has been the best defensive shortstop in the NL this season, and he fins a way to get on base to make things happen when he is at the plate. He could be worth a look in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues if you are in need of a shortstop.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/31, 8:42 PM CT
Brendan Ryan is expected to be on the shelf for at least five days while nursing a bruised ankle, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: It is uncertain if the Cardinals will place him on the DL in order to activate Khalil Greene. Ryan should remain held out of fantasy lineups until further notice.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/31, 8:21 AM CT
Brendan Ryan was seen leaving Busch Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot on Thursday night after the Cardinals loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: No word on whether the boot is serious or just a precaution, but the team is calling Ryan day-to-day at this point. While Ryan doesn't provide much fantasy value, he is crucial to the Cardinals' success. He has emerged as one of the better defensive shortstops in the game and everyone in Cardinal Nation is hoping the injury isn't too severe.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 7/30, 7:56 PM CT
Brendan Ryan exited Thursday's battle with Los Angeles after fouling a ball off his leg.

Our View: We will keep you posted when Ryan's injury status is updated.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 7/4, 12:21 PM CT
Cardinals' beat writer Matthew Leach is reporting on his Twitter page that shortstop Brendan Ryan was a late scratch from Saturday's game with "gastrointestinal stress." He was replaced by Tyler Greene in the lineup.

Our View: Not sure exactly what gastrointestinal stress is, but it sounds like Brendan might have had a tummy ache. This shouldn't be too serious, so anyone in NL-only leagues who is using Ryan should have him back soon.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/29, 8:02 PM CT
Brendan Ryan is back in the Cardinals' lineup for tonight's game against the Giants, according to MLBblogs.com.

Our View: He was held out of the starting lineup for the previous three games while nursing a sore wrist. He received a corstisone shot Friday and should be fine.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/21, 10:26 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Cardinal infielder Brendan Ryan exited Saturday's game against the Royals in the seventh inning due to leg cramps.

Our View: Ryan also apparently has a wrist issue that's been bothering him, but the injury dates all the way back to his high school career, so it doesn't seem that pressing. Consider Ryan day-to-day at this point. He was replaced yesterday by Joe Thurston.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 6/10, 9:35 PM CT
Brendan Ryan was 4-for-5 with two runs scored an RBI, and a stolen base as the Cardinals defeated the Marlins 13-4 on Wednesday. He hit ninth in the order for the Cardinals.

Our View: Ryan's average is up to .318 but he has just six RBI in 110 at bats this season. Although the average will certainly catch your eye, the rest of his numbers don't warrant much fantasy attention.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 6/8, 4:09 PM CT
Brendan Ryan did his best to kick start the Cardinals sputtering offense on Monday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run and a steal while batting out of the ninth spot, but it wasn't enough as the Cards lost 5-2 to the Rockies.

Our View: Ryan is a pest to major league pitchers, but poison to fantasy owners. Despite a .297 average, he boasts only five RBIs and no home runs in 2009.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 5/19, 11:13 PM CT
Brendan Ryan was a menace on Tuesday. The pesky infielder was 1-for-2 with two runs scores, two walks and a stolen base in the Cardinals 3-0 win over the Cubs.

Our View: Ryan has played well this season as a spot starter and utility man off the bench, but as valuable as he is to Tony LaRussa e's not much of a fantasy option.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 5/15, 6:47 PM CT
The St. Louis Cardinals have activated infielder Brendan Ryan from the 15-day DL, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ryan will be available to the Cardinals on Friday.

Our View: The Cards sent down starter Mitchell Boggs in a corresponding move. Ryan is a utility infieder who was playing well prior to his injury. Expect him to see quite a bit of time in the lineup, and he may be useful in NL-only leagues if he plays nearly every day.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 5/13, 8:14 AM CT
Brendan Ryan began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is recovering from a strained left hamstring.

Our View: Skipper Tony LaRussa noted that Ryan may not return to St. Louis when he is first eligible to come off the DL this weekend, as he is a young player and would more greatly benefit from more playing time in the minors to work on his skills. Also, the Cardinals may need to add an outfielder for depth with Ryan Ludwick (strained hamstring) possibly bound for the DL.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 5/9, 8:24 AM CT
Brendan Ryan, who is recovering from a strained left hamstring, will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Ryan was originally slated to begin his rehab with Single-A Quad Cities yesterday, but was delayed to be re-evaluated. He could return to St. Louis in mid-May, but his fantasy value is limited as a reserve infielder.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 5/7, 2:33 PM CT
Brendan Ryan's rehab stint has been delayed by the Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: He was initially slated to start a rehab assignment today, but was held back and will be re-evaluated in a few days. He is recovering from a strained left hamstring.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 4/30, 3:27 PM CT
Brendan Ryan has been placed on the 15-day DL with a mild hamstring strain, according to TSN.

Our View: He would have likely avoided the DL, but the club was forced to make the move with Khalil Greene also ailing. The club recalled Tyler Greene from Memphis for depth.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/29, 11:38 PM CT
Updating a previous report, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting the the Cardinals are likely to place Brendan Ryan on the 15-day DL with a strained hamstring. The team will promote 2005 first-round pick Tyler Greene to their major league roster.

Our View: Ryan doesn't hold much fantasy value as he is mediocre with his bat. However, he is an important element to the Cardinals infield defense. With Khalil Greene likely to miss a couple games with a sore arm, look for Brian Barden to get the next few starts at shortstop.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/29, 7:34 PM CT
Brendan Ryan left Wednesday's game against the Braves with an apparent hamstring injury. Ryan was starting at shortstop in place of Khalil Greene and was replaced by Brian Barden.

Our View: Ryan has not hit very well this season, but he has turned in some fine defense. His injury comes at a bad time as Khalil Greene is dealing with soreness in his right arm.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/6, 7:38 AM CT
Skip Schumaker has been named the starting second baseman for 2009, but skipper Tony LaRussa is going with Brendan Ryan at second in today's season opener against the Pirates, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Ryan will also bat leadoff. Adjust your lineups accordingly. LaRussa took Schumaker aside on Sunday, and reassured him that he will be the regular second baseman this season.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 3/3, 7:58 AM CT
Brendan Ryan, who has been dealing with tendinitis in his right wrist, made an appearance at third base in Monday's exhibition game, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He still has not been cleared to swing a bat though.

Our View: Ryan had a shot to start at third base while Troy Glaus is on the shelf, but the top candidates appear to be David Freese and Joe Mather.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 2/27, 7:16 PM CT
Brendan Ryan, who was expected to compete for the opening day third baseman job, is not expected to return before Wednesday, according to MLB.com. He has a sore right wrist.

Our View: With Troy Glaus out due to shoulder surgery, Ryan is missing a prime opportunity. At this point, Joe Mather may be the front-runner to win the job.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 2/23, 3:28 PM CT
Brendan Ryan is nursing a sore right wrist, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The ailment may keep him out of the Cardinals' first few Grapefruit League games. He said, "I backed off two times during the off-season, and thought, OK, maybe here the third time is a charm. The soreness came back. I guess I got bad wrists."

Our View: Ryan cannot afford to miss time while competing for a role in the Cardinals' infield.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 9/6, 7:25 AM CT
Brendan Ryan is being considered for his first start in center field today, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Ryan has worked as a utility infielder, but the team feels he is versatile enough to handle center field. He looks to get more at-bats, but only maintains a .242 average over 182 at-bats (no homers) and will continue to hold very little fantasy value.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 8/6, 7:11 AM CT
Brendan Ryan has been sent down to Triple-A Memphis, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team signed former Nationals' infielder Felipe Lopez, and felt Ryan was expendable to free up a roster spot.

Our View: Ryan only hit .242 over 182 at-bats this season, and held very little fantasy value prior to his demotion.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 6/3, 7:40 PM CT
St. Louis shortstop Brendan Ryan is dealing with neck and upper back soreness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The Cardinals have held Ryan out of the lineup this evening but feel he won't need time on the disabled list. Ryan reports he first felt the pain on Monday afternoon during pregame warm-ups, but the team is keeping him in mind should a pinch hitter be needed. On the field, Aaron Miles will get the start in his stead.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/23, 3:16 PM CT
As expected, Brendan Ryan has been activated from the 15-day DL and recalled him from a rehab assignment at Double-A Springfield of the Texas League, according to the AP. Ryan had been on the DL with an oblique injury and has yet to play in a game for St. Louis in 2008. The team made the move as shortstop Cesar Izturis is unlikely to be available to play tonight due to a severe contusion on his arm. To make room on the roster, the team sent down pitcher Brad Thompson to Triple-A Memphis.

Our View: Ryan will start at shortstop and has more upside as a hitter than Izturis. He will have a good chance to generate solid numbers while hitting in the talented Cardinals' lineup as well. He is worth targeting if you need help at the position right now.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/23, 9:56 AM CT
The Cardinals are expected to call up Brendan Ryan from the minors in time for tonight's game against Pittsburgh, according to The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Shortstop Cesar Izturis is going to be out due to a severe contusion suffered while struck by a pitch below his right elbow during Tuesday night action. The team does not know how long he may miss, but the team is hopeful he will avoid the DL.

Our View: Ryan will start at shortstop and has more upside as a hitter than Izturis. He will have a good chance to generate solid numbers while hitting in the talented Cardinals' lineup as well. He is worth targeting if you need help at the position right now.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsMonday 4/21, 7:28 AM CT
The Cardinals don't sound like they're in a hurry to bring Brendan Ryan to the majors. The infielder is hitting .400 during his Triple-A rehab stint. "He missed a lot of playing time in spring training," manager Tony La Russa informs the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He’s getting in shape. He has to play himself into shape. You don’t do that in the majors." Ryan is recovering from a strained rib cage muscle.

Our View: We'd love to see somebody push aside Cesar Izturis' weak bat at shortstop, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen. The Cards like his glove too much.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 4/18, 12:18 AM CT
Brendan Ryan (rib cage muscle strain) contributed to Double-A Springfield’s 20-5 win on Thursday night by going 4-for-6 with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored.

Our View: He might have convinced the Cardinals that he is ready to be activated now.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 4/16, 8:01 PM CT
Brendan Ryan (rib cage muscle strain) finished his rehab assignment at Single-A, he went 3-for-12, and now he is on his way to Double-A Springfield to continue his rehab, this according to MLB.com. "I think now, at a higher level, with colder weather, that will be the test. Right now it's going very well," GM John Mozeliak said. "We just want to make sure that he's game-ready."

Our View: Ryan hit .289 with a .347 OBP in 180 AB, and he will likely take over for Rico Washington as the Cards super utility player.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsTuesday 4/8, 8:36 AM CT
Brendan Ryan is expected to take live batting practice today in anticipation of playing in a minor league game on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ryan is battling a strained rib cage, and would have made the opening day roster if healthy.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/29, 10:30 AM CT
Brendan Ryan is expected to begin the season on the disabled list, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was slated to be optioned to Triple-A, even if he wasn't sidelined by a strained muscle in his left side. Career minor leaguer Rico Washington is expected to make the Cardinals roster in place of Ryan.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsThursday 3/27, 8:36 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Brendan Ryan is still working hard to recover from a strained muscle that has hindered his spring work. The Cards coaching staff hopes to determine Friday whether Ryan is fit enough to play after failing to take team drills since March 17 because of a strain suffered diving into third base. Ryan was able to take swings off a tee on Wednesday, and hopes to appear in Friday night's exhibition at Class AA
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 3/26, 9:14 AM CT
Brendan Ryan will resume on-field activities on Wednesday. He will field and swing in the batting cages, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Ryan has been dealing with a sore rib cage.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 3/23, 8:24 AM CT
Brendan Ryan underwent a scan that revealed no fractures to his sore rib cage, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He received a cortisone shot in the area on Saturday and hopes to return to the field as early as Tuesday. This is good news as he battles for a top bench role as an infielder.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSaturday 3/22, 7:38 AM CT
Brendan Ryan’s rib injury makes his availability for opening day a question mark, and his absence has revived the major-league chances of D’Angelo Jimenez, this according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Jimenez started at shortstop Friday, recorded a double and saw his average climb to a minuscule .154. But with Ryan an unknown until an exam today Jimenez represents the Cardinals’ best in-house option at backup shortstop. "That’s part of why he has an opportunity in this organization," manager Tony La Russa said.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsWednesday 9/19, 5:29 AM CT
Brendan Ryan was pulled from Tuesday's game for apparently swinging at a 3-0 pitch, to the dismay of manager Tony La Russa, the AP reports. La Russa said after the game that Ryan had told him he thought the count was 2-1. "It's the big leagues," La Russa said. "I sent a message right away, that's not how we play. Not acceptable."
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsFriday 7/27, 9:50 PM CT
The Cardinals optioned Brendan Ryan to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, according to the AP. He hit .339 with two home runs and five RBI in 62 at-bats for St. Louis. He could be the team's shortstop next year if David Eckstein leaves as a free agent

Our View: The Cardinals play seven games in six days, so they needed another arm for the bullpen and Ryan was the one who had to go back down.
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/17, 7:07 AM CT
Brendan Ryan was recalled from Triple-A Saturday and went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI at Oakland. Ryan will probably see a lot of playing time at shortstop while David Eckstein is on the DL, though lineup-jockeying Tony La Russa can also use Aaron Miles there. Ryan was having an ordinary year at Triple-A (.266 average, one homer), though he was running the bases aggressively (12 steals in 17 attempts).
Brendan Ryan, SS, St. Louis CardinalsSunday 6/3, 5:24 AM CT
Brendan Ryan was recalled from Triple-A Saturday, giving the Cardinals some additional infield depth. Ryan was hitting just .243 at Triple-A with one homer, so there's no reason to make adding him a priority.
