Chad Orvella, P, Kansas City RoyalsThursday 7/2, 6:55 PM CT
Chad Orvella has signed a minor league deal with the Royals, according to USA Today.

Our View: The 38-year-old vet was released by the Rays back in June due to a poor 6.12 ERA over 32.1 innings with Triple-A Durham. Kansas City sent him to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and Orvella should continue to be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Chad Orvella has been released by the Rays according to The Sports Network.

Our View: Orvella was at Triple-A Durham and hadn't pitched in the majors since 2007. He has a career 5.79 ERA in 82.1 innings. Consider him off the fantasy grid.

Manager Joe Maddon told the Ray team website that it was "more than likely" pitcher Chad Orvella would start the season on the DL. Orvella has struggled with shoulder problems throughout spring work and won't break camp with the team. The one-time future closer of the Rays has little fantasy value.

Biceps tendinitis has kept Chad Orvella from throwing the past 10 days, and he hasn't appeared in a spring game since March 3, according to the Tampa Tribune. "It's nothing bad," Orvella said. "It's moving in the right direction, it's just taking a little long." Nonetheless, if he can't get back on the mound soon, he'll have a tough time being ready for the start of the season.

Chad Orvella was surprisingly optioned to Triple-A Friday, along with Seth McClung. This means Jae Kuk Ryu will open the year in the Tampa Bay bullpen.

Chad Orvella is one of three pitchers fighting for the final spot in the Devil Rays bullpen, along with Seth McClung and Juan Salas, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Orvella's certainly made a strong case on the field, with a 0.87 ERA and seven strikeouts over 10 1/3 innings.

Chad Orvella hasn't allowed a run in five spring innings, including a clean performance Thursday. He's given up four hits, walked no one and struck out three. The closer chase in Tampa Bay is jumbled as ever - especially with Seth McClung struggling mightily this month - but Orvella has put himself in good position with his work so far.

Chad Orvella has been officially been shut down for the season, according to manager Joe Maddon. Orvella has been battling an oblique strain of late. His season wound up being a disappointing one - he was in the closing mix back in the spring, but he couldn't take the job and wound up with a 7.43 ERA over 24 1/3 innings with the big club.

The Devil Rays recalled Chad Orvella from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday night, according to the AP. He went 1-4 with a 7.79 ERA in 16 games earlier this season with the Devil Rays and was 4-0 with 1.86 ERA in 27 games at Durham.
