Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 3/13, 4:43 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in today's 8-7 win over the Nationals in the Grapefruit League.

Our View: Keppinger should be a quality reserve in the middle infield for Houston, but has little speed and power, and his value will be limited to NL-only leagues.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 1/15, 8:46 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger has agreed to a one-year deal with the Astros worth $1.15MM to avoid arbitration, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Keppinger batted .256 over 107 games last season with 13 doubles, three triples, seven homers and 29 RBI. He also tied a franchise record by hitting safely in his first eight games.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 9/16, 9:35 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger couldn't lead the Astros past the Reds on Wednesday, despite hitting two home runs against his former team, as Houston lost 6-5 on the road.

Our View: The multi-homer game was the first of his career. He now has 20 career home runs in 337 games - not quite a Mark McGwire-like rate.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 9/9, 9:18 AM CT
According to the Houston Chronicle, Jeff Keppinger (back) missed his fourth consecutive game on Tuesday, but is reportedly improving dramatically.

Our View: Keppinger visited a chiropractor Tuesday afternoon and felt worlds better afterward. He says he's hoping to get back into the lineup Wednesday. Even if he doesn't, it looks like he's close. The infielder is hitting .259 with five homers and 25 RBI in 90 games this season.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 8/27, 4:13 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went just 1-for-5 in St. Louis on Thursday, but his lone hit was a game-winning home run in the top of the ninth, as Houston rallied to beat the Cardinals 4-3 on the road.

Our View: The home run was only Keppinger's fourth of the season. Still, he is now just one away from equaling his career high in the category.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 8/21, 11:41 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger drove in the only run of the game Friday with a 1-for-3 performance that was good enough for 1-0 Astros win.

Our View: Keppinger has just three RBI this month and 21 on the year, but Friday's certainly came at a good time. He's not worth owning in fantasy formats though.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/28, 10:57 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger was huge for the Astros on Tuesday as they defeated the Cubs by a score of 11-6. Keppinger went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, three runs scored, and three RBI in the win.

Our View: Keppinger was a homer short of the cycle tonight, but the Astros will take his offensive performance any day of the week. He is not an everyday player for the Astros, but a few more nights like this could force the team into giving him more at-bats going forward.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 6/19, 10:14 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Friday's 5-2 loss at Minnesota.

Our View: The Astros only had five hits in the game. Keppinger hit his first homer of June and his third of the season.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 6/15, 9:02 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger was out of the lineup on Sunday after hurting his back picking up a suitcase on Saturday according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Baseball players and their injuries. Surely, Keppinger is telling the truth about how he got hurt. Even before his fateful attempt to pick up that suitcase, though, he was not much of a fantasy option in 2009 and shouldn't be whenever he recovers.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 5/26, 7:39 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger will start at third base while Geoff Blum recovers from a strained left hamstring, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Keppinger is hitting .313 this season over 64 at-bats, and is a career .288 hitter. He is worth consideration for NL-only leagues while Blum is on the shelf.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 4/21, 5:52 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger is in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. He will start at third base and hit eighth.

Our View: Keppinger had missed the previous two games with a sore back, but the utility player appears to be over that issue. He is hitting .467/.529/.933 in 15 at bats this season. If he can land an everyday job, he is certainly worth a look in NL Only leagues.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 4/17, 8:18 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger exited Thursday's game with a sore back, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: He is considered day-to-day. Keppinger is off to a solid start with seven hits (one homer) over 15 at-bats, and hopefully he won't miss much time with the ailment.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 4/16, 3:24 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger started at second base in place of Kaz Matsui in Houston's 6-3 win over the Pirates on Thursday. He went 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk.

Our View: Keppinger now has three singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run in 15 at bats this season. He has always held the reputation of being a good hitter, and if he lands an every day job, he could be a big fantasy surprise.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 4/7, 10:37 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger drove home the winning run in the 10th inning against the Cubs on Tuesday with a base hit. He was 1-for-1 in the game.

Our View: Keppinger figures to get half the starts at third in Houston. Don't expect the young infielder to make much of an impact outside of deep NL-only leagues.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/31, 3:33 PM CT
The Reds have dealt Jeff Keppinger to the Astros in exchange for a player to be named, according to the Astros Official Website.

Our View: Keppinger will likely platoon at third base along with Geoff Blum. If he faces left-handed pitching exclusively, he could produce quite a bit of offense considering he owns a .351 career batting average against them.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 3/28, 5:56 PM CT
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that the Cincinnati Reds are making infielder Jeff Keppinger available in trade talks.

Our View: Stark reports that the Red Sox and Astros are interested in his services. He will not have much fantasy value regardless of where he winds up, as he lacks power.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 3/25, 2:57 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Boston. The Reds only had six hits in the game, all of them singles.

Our View: Keppinger should only hold value for deeper NL-only leagues while likely working as a backup shortstop.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 3/14, 5:08 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger busted out of his spring slump with a 2-for-3 day as the Reds fell 3-1 to Tampa Bay on Saturday. He was 3-for-25 entering the game.

Our View: Keppinger had a nice first six weeks of the 2008 season, but never seemed to recover from a fractured knee cap. He will likely start off the season backing up Jerry Hairston, but with a poor spring, he could be back in the minors.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/9, 4:16 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 0-for-3 on Monday in Cincinnati's Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia.

Our View: Keppinger got off to a great start for the Reds last year but wasn't the same after a stint on the DL. He's now batting just .091 this spring which means he certainly not a sure thing to start at shortstop this year.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 8/12, 9:13 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 0-for-5 tonight against Pittsburgh in the Reds 5-1 victory. He made many fantasy owners smile earlier this year, but since coming off the DL on June 22, he is hitting just .200.

Our View: Keppinger hit .206 in July and so far in August he is batting just .122. He was hitting .322 when he came off the DL, but is hitting .259. He is no longer someone to use in any type of fantasy league.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSunday 8/3, 7:46 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger will bat leadoff for the Reds on Monday as Jerry Hairston Jr. is again sidelined with a sore right hamstring, according to MLB.com. "I'd rather have Jerry," manager Dusty Baker said. "You start through the process of elimination in that situation with what you have available."

Our View: Hairston is currently listed as day to day, though there is some belief that he could end up being placed back on the DL after his latest setback.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 7/3, 9:09 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger has struggled since returning from the disabled list due to a broken knee cap. The Reds third baseman went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Nationals.

Our View: Keppinger extended his season-high streak of consecutive hitless at-bats to 13 in the 0-for-3 performance.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSunday 6/22, 12:14 PM CT
The Cincinnati Reds have activated shortstop Jeff Keppinger from the 15-day disabled list, according to MLB.com.

Our View: To make room for his return, infielder And Phillips was designated for assignment. Keppinger was battling .324 through 39 games before he fractured his left kneecap on a foul tip on May 13th. Two more shortstops went on the DL since Keppinger went down. Jerry Hairston Jr. suffered a fractured thumb on June 9, and Jolbert Cabrera dislocated his left index finger on Friday. With that in mind, his return may be a bit premature but was heavily influenced by necessity.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 6/21, 5:37 PM CT
Manager Dusty Baker said the rash of injuries at shortstop for the Reds could force the club to reexamine the timetable for players who are close to returning from the DL. "We've got to check and see how they're doing—how they're really doing," Baker said in the AP. "There's how the player says he's feeling and doing and how those down there that are watching him say how he's doing." Jolbert Cabrera, who recalled earlier this month, became the fourth shortstop to be placed on the DL Saturday.

Our View: Keppinger was originally thought to be at least a week away, but it sounds like he could be back earlier than that now.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 6/19, 10:44 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger isn't quite ready to return from the DL, despite the fact that he's hitting .429 in 21 rehab at-bats. "It's tempting," manager Dusty Baker said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. "But I talked to him; his legs are still sore." Keppinger is coming back from a fractured kneecap.

Our View: Baker said that Keppinger could be back for next weekend's series in Cleveland, but it was more likely that he'd be activated that next week when the team returns home.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 6/12, 10:21 AM CT
Team GM Walt Jocketty commented on Wednesday that Jeff Keppinger is around 7-10 days away from returning to Cincinnati, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Manager Dusty Baker said, "There's a lot Kepp has to do. You don't want his legs to fatigue. That's when you pull stuff. You want to make sure everything's back together before they get here."

Our View: The team has a need at shortstop following the loss of Jerry Hairston Jr, but Keppinger will not be rushed in his rehab. Keppinger was hitting .324 over 39 games this season, with three homers and 21 RBI, and is worth waiting for in NL-only leagues.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 6/11, 1:09 PM CT
The untimely injury to the versatile Jerry Hairston (out 2-4 weeks) has left the Reds with little depth on the bench. Paul Janish will start at shortstop until Jeff Keppinger returns from a broken kneecap. Keppinger began a rehab assignment on Monday and could be back as early as Friday.

Our View: Keppinger becomes a person of interest again for NL-only owners. He doesn't offer much power or speed but he'll hit for average and score runs in a loaded Reds lineup.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 6/10, 10:12 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger was scheduled to begin his rehab assignment on Monday at Single-A, but the weather did not cooperate as the game was rained out, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Our View: Keppinger is recovering from a fractured left kneecap, and was to be used as a DH. The source speculates that Keppinger could still come off the DL as soon as Friday. Jerry Hairston is out with a fractured finger, and the team could use Keppinger's services at shortstop.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 6/9, 8:22 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger is serving as the DH for Single-A Sarasota Monday, according to MLB.com. The shortstop is coming back from a fractured kneecap.

Our View: Assuming all goes well during the rehab, Keppinger could be back in a week or so.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 6/6, 9:20 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger ran the bases on Friday at the club's spring complex and is expected to do so again on Saturday and could DH in an extended camp game on Sunday before starting a rehab assignment, according to MLB.com. He is working his way back from a broken left kneecap.

Our View: Keppinger, who has been out since May 13, was slated to miss 4-6 weeks, and it looks like he will be back on the shorter end of that projection.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 5/27, 4:49 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger is progressing well in his recovery from a broken left kneecap. The shortstop has been walking without a limp and is in not real pain, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "It feels good," Keppinger said. "It's good to be able to walk. I don't have any pain, just a little discomfort."

Our View: Keppinger has been hitting for a week and hopes to be cleared to start running tonight when he visits the doctor. It should be about a month before he returns.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 5/14, 1:43 PM CT
As expected, the Reds placed Jeff Keppinger on the DL on Wednesday. The infielder fractured his left kneecap when he fouled a ball off the joint on Tuesday. Keppinger will undergo an MRI later on Wednesday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Our View: The Reds will likely wait for the test results before issuing a timetable. We don't imagine he'll have a quick return, though.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 5/13, 8:54 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger fouled a ball off his knee and the report was terrible as the early season hitting star fractured his left kneecap, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Keepinger will go on the DL with a .324 batting average and an MRI scheduled for Wednesday to see if there is anything else wrong in the knee. The team will now have to hope that Alex Gonzalez can make it back to the field soon as they will likely be forced to go with Jerry Hairston and possibly Paul Janish.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 5/10, 11:14 PM CT
The Mets took the win in the first game of the day, but it was the Reds in the turnaround, taking a 7-1 win with a full offensive surge from the entire lineup. Top man of the twilight revisit was SS Jeff Keppinger , going 5-for-5 at the dish, all singles, with two runs scored and one RBI on the day.

Our View: Keppinger has shown flashes of potential, but today's performance has us wondering why we don't see it more often.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 4/12, 10:16 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger had three hits and an RBI on Saturday night to boost his average to .340.

Our View: Dating back to the start of his Reds career last season, Keppinger is hitting .333 in 288 AB as he continues to try and dissuade the club from inserting Alex Gonzalez back into the lineup when he is healthy.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/9, 3:17 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger has a seven game hitting streak, according to MLB.com. He will look to extend it tonight against Milwaukee starter Dave Bush, who is currently 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA. Keppinger is hitting .387 overall, in 31 at-bats.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 4/7, 9:05 AM CT
The Reds may need to find a permanent spot in the lineup for Jeff Keppinger. The utility infielder went 3-for-5 with a homer, double, three RBI, and three runs on Sunday. He is batting .435 on the young season, but he's only starting due to Alex Gonzalez's knee injury.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosThursday 4/3, 3:01 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 2-for-3 with one RBI on Thursday, and notably blasted his first homer of the season in a 3-2 win over Arizona. Keppinger is off to a hot start as he registered five hits over his first 10 at-bats of the season.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/2, 10:14 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 3-for-3 at the plate and stole a base from the second spot in the order for the Reds. Keppinger surely will give way to Alex Gonzalez once his knee is healthy, but that doesn't mean that Keppinger won't continue to hold his value in NL Only leagues as Dusty Baker is famous for playing the hot hand.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/31, 12:04 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger is set to bat second in the Reds' batting order, according to RedsReporter.com. He will have a good opportunity to score a lot of runs in the Reds' offense with Griffey and Phillips hitting behind him.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 3/18, 5:06 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger injured his quadriceps while sliding into second base recently, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He's taking batting practice, but the Reds will give him a couple of days off to rest up.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 3/15, 4:33 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger went 3-for-3 against Boston on Saturday, while driving in his second run of the spring. He now holds a .361 batting average (13-for-36) and could ultimately be the opening day shortstop if he continues to perform well and Alex Gonzalez remains on the shelf.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/10, 7:17 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger has started four of the last six games at shortstop, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Dusty Baker has not mentioned starting Keppinger ahead of Alex Gonzalez on opening day, but the Reds could end up heading that way if he continues to perform well and Gonzalez remains on the shelf.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 2/29, 9:54 PM CT
Jeff Keppinger is the leading candidate to fill in for the injured Alex Gonzalez at shortstop, according to the AP. Gonzalez has a fractured knee and is out indefinitely. Juan Castro is another option at short for the Reds. Keppinger hit .332 in 241 at-bats last year and hit .320 in his minor league career, so it's clear he knows what he's doing with the bat. If it turns out that Gonzalez is sidelined for a long time, Keppinger could be a sleeper in deeper leagues.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosTuesday 2/26, 9:04 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger has been taking flyballs with the outfielders this spring in preparation for a super utility role. "They told me to have all my gloves ready and be ready for anywhere," Keppinger said in the Cincinnati Enquirer. Keppinger has played three games in the outfield over the past two years, so it's not completely foreign to him. He hit a surprising .332 in 241 at-bats last year, and he could get a little more playing time this year if he proved to be adequate defensively at all his positions.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSaturday 12/8, 12:04 PM CT
The release of Jorge Cantu means more playing time at first base for Jeff Keppinger. "That's a good thing for me," Keppinger told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "They want me coming off the bench, so any at-bats I can get are good." The Reds already have first basemen Scott Hatteberg and Joey Votto on the (not to mention Adam Dunn), but they both hit left-handed, which means Keppinger could get some starts at first against southpaws. He started just one game at first for the Reds in '07.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSunday 8/26, 7:05 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger had three more hits, and three runs scored, in Saturday's win over Florida. The sizzling journeyman is now hitting .432 on the month, with 21 runs scored. Alex Gonzalez is back with the Reds and ready to play, but interim manager Pete Mackanin has no choice but to keep his hottest bat in the lineup.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosSunday 4/22, 2:31 PM CT
The Reds recalled Jeff Keppinger from his rehab assignment and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville Sunday, according to the AP. Keppinger has been out with a broken finger.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/26, 7:30 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger still is unsure of when he'll be able to return from his broken right ring finger, according to the Cincinnati Post. "My finger's still broke," Keppinger said Sunday. "I have no idea. I'm supposed to start bending it (today) and they took X-rays on Thursday and they said to wear (the brace) for another week and start bending it on Monday. What that means, I don't know. I guess we'll just play it day-to-day."
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosMonday 3/5, 8:29 AM CT
Jeff Keppinger broke the ring finger on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch on Sunday, according to the Cincinnati Post. He's expected to be sidelined for about four to six weeks.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 1/10, 9:37 PM CT
The Reds acquired Jeff Keppinger from the Royals Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitcher Russ Haltiwanger, according to the AP. He hit .267 in 60 big-league at-bats last year.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosFriday 8/25, 4:54 PM CT
The Royals will recall Jeff Keppinger from Triple-A to replace the injured Reggie Sanders on the roster, according to the AP. Keppinger is hitting .354 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 32 games with Omaha. He can play first, second and third base, as well as shortstop and the outfield.
Jeff Keppinger, 3B, Houston AstrosWednesday 7/19, 4:59 PM CT
The Royals acquired second baseman Jeff Keppinger from the Mets in exchange for Ruben Gotay. Keppinger, 26, was hitting .299 with two homers and no steals through 321 at-bats with Triple-A Norfolk. He's a contact hitter without much pop in his bat but has a career average of .310. He probably won't play much for the Royals right now but could contend for the second base job next year if Mark Grudzielanek is not retained.
