Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 3/16, 3:36 PM CT
Justin Verlander was roughed up by the Phillies on Tuesday, giving up four runs off three hits (two home runs) and one walk over 3.1 innings.

Our View: Verlander did, however, have five strikeouts. We wouldn't worry about the weak showing, and Verlander remains one of the best strikeout artists in the game.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 3/11, 3:08 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed two runs and six hits in four innings of spring action against the Phillies on Thursday. He recorded two strikeouts.

Our View: Not an overpowering outing from Verlander by any means, but certainly not one that should elicit any worry.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 3/6, 3:13 PM CT
Justin Verlander was solid against the Orioles on Saturday, notching the win after giving up one run off one hit and two walks over three innings.

Our View: Verlander surrendered a home run to Ty Wigginton, the only hit he allowed in his three innings of work. Verlander is known to give up a homer every now and then but proved his overall dominance that we became used to last year.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 2/23, 6:02 PM CT
Justin Verlander has been slated to start on opening day for the Tigers, according to MLB.com.

Our View: This is no surprise as Verlander is Detroit's ace hurler. He went 19-9 with a 3.45 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 35 starts in 2009, and should remain a safe pick among fantasy hurlers for the upcoming campaign. He will be opposed by fellow All-Star Zack Greinke and the Royals in the opener.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 2/4, 3:38 PM CT
The Tigers officially announced their signing of Justin Verlander to a five-year, $80 million deal on Thursday, according to the team's official site.

Our View: In addition to a $500,000 signing bonus, Verlander will receive $6.75 million this year, $12.75 in 2011 and $20 million in each of the following three seasons. Verlander seems to be worth the hefty price tag after showing great promise his first two seasons in the MLB and bouncing back from a sub-par 2008 for his best season yet in 2009. His strikeout ability makes him one of the best fantasy pitchers in the game.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 2/3, 6:45 PM CT
Justin Verlander agreed to a five-year deal with the Tigers worth $80MM, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: The extension is expected to be officially announced as early as tomorrow. Verlander earned the new deal by winning a career-high 19 games in 2009, with a 3.45 ERA. Expect another strong campaign in 2010.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 2/2, 10:34 AM CT
The Tigers are growing "increasingly confident" that ace pitcher Justin Verlander will soon sign a long-term contract extension, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: The five year, $78 million deal Felix Hernandez recently signed with the Mariners is still the club's reference point for negotiations. Although Verlander is said to be potentially seeking a little bit more than that, expect a pact to be reached soon.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 1/29, 1:33 PM CT
The Tigers are working on a contract extension for Justin Verlander that would be for five years and worth around $75 million, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

Our View: Using the five years and $78 million that Felix Hernandez recently inked, Verlander seems in line to get nearly the same type of deal. Verlander apparently wants a sixth year guaranteed on the extension, so we'll have to wait and see if Detroit budges, but it looks like these two sides could agree on a deal before long.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 1/21, 5:05 PM CT
Justin Verlander is yet to receive a long-term offer from the Tigers, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: Verlander would like to ink a one-year contract for 2010 before working on a long-term deal though. He covets $9.5MM for the upcoming campaign, and the Tigers have offered $6.9MM. An arbitration hearing next month would decide which figure becomes his salary.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 10/4, 2:45 PM CT
Justin Verlander pitched his team into a one-game playoff for the Central Division title on Sunday as the Tigers beat the White Sox 5-3. Verlander went 7.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

Our View: Verlander did what an ace is supposed to do today, and now his team has a chance to head to the playoffs. The Tigers are struggling in the rotation behind Verlander, but he is still one of the better pitchers in the league.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 9/29, 9:10 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up four earned runs on eight hits over eight innings in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Twins in the second game of their doubleheader. He had no walks and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander held the Twins scoreless over the first five innings, and had a good night despite allowing four runs, especially while helping Detroit hold on to their lead in the AL Central.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 9/24, 9:39 PM CT
Justin Verlander rebounded on Thursday after two rough outings to pick up his 17th win of the season. Verlander went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out 11.

Our View: Verlander looked like his regular dominant self tonight when the Tigers needed a big outing. He is in th Cy Young race, and tonight's outing surely helped his cause.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 9/19, 6:30 PM CT
Justin Verlander coughed up five runs on nine hits and two walks over 7.1 innings on Saturday. The Twins handed him his ninth loss of the season with a 6-2 drubbing.

Our View: Verlander was cruising in this one, but fell apart in the eighth inning, where he was touched for four of his five runs. He's been knocked around in his last two starts and hasn't won a decision since September 4th.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 9/14, 10:28 PM CT
Justin Verlander was tagged for five earned runs on 10 hits over seven innings in Monday's 6-5 win over Toronto at Comerica Park. He had no walks and fired nine strikeouts.

Our View: The Jays were leading 5-2 when Verlander exited, so he ends the night with a no-decision. He was roughed up by Toronto, but at least he was a solid source for strikeouts. He only allowed one earned run in each of his previous two starts, and should bounce back fine.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 9/9, 10:29 PM CT
Justin Verlander took his eighth loss of the season against the Royals of all teams on Wednesday, allowing three runs in six innings, as Detroit fell 5-1 in Kansas City.

Our View: Verlander has been 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA vs. the Royals in 2009 entering the game. His chances of reaching 20 wins are now very remote.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 9/4, 10:09 PM CT
Justin Verlander was in control in Friday's 4-3 win at Tampa Bay, as he only issued one earned run on four hits over eight innings. He had one walk and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander earned a win in each of his last three starts, and is currently tied with CC Sabathia for the AL lead with 16 wins for 2009.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 8/30, 2:49 PM CT
Justin Verlander notched his 15th win of the season on Sunday as the Tigers beat the Rays 4-3. Verlander went eight innings and allowed three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four.

Our View: Verlander wasn't his usual dominant self today, but he was still good enough to win on a day when he didn't have his best stuff. He looks to be at the head of the AL Cy Young race at this point.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 8/25, 8:11 AM CT
Justin Verlander tied Josh Beckett for the second most wins in the American League on Monday (14) despite allowing ten hits and four runs in just 5.2 innings, as the Tigers outslugged the AL-West leading Angels 10-7 on the road.

Our View: Verlander also struck out seven, increasing his AL-leading total to 211. He's looking like an increasingly strong bet to win his first Cy Young award at the age of 26 this season.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 8/19, 9:47 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up three earned runs on six hits over eight innings in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Mariners at Comerica Park. He had one walk and racked up 10 strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander was dealt a loss due to poor run support from his teammates, but at least he reached double digits in strikeouts for fantasy owners. He is now 1-2 over four starts this month, but still leads the Tigers with 13 wins. He also continues to rank second in the majors with 204 strikeouts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 8/13, 3:46 PM CT
Justin Verlander bounced back with a vengeance on Thursday after a rough outing his last time out. Verlander went eight scoreless innings and allowed four hits while walking one and striking out eight in the Tigers' 2-0 shutout of the Red Sox.

Our View: Verlander was dominant today, and he did it against a very good lineup in Boston. The one bad start was an anomaly, and fantasy owners should expect this kind of production nearly every time out.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 8/8, 11:46 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings on Saturday. He fanned six, but was saddled with his sixth loss of the season as the Twins torched the Tigers 11-0.

Our View: Verlander has been excellent for most of the season, but has stumbled recently. He's allowed five runs in each of his last two starts and has seen his ERA jump almost 30 points over that span.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 8/3, 8:43 PM CT
Justin Verlander was tagged for five earned runs on nine hits over eight innings in Monday's 6-5 win over the Orioles at Comerica Park. He had one walk and fired eight strikeouts.

Our View: The game was tied at 5-5 when Verlander exited, so he takes a no-decision rather than a win. He was not solid tonight, but fantasy owners should still be pleased with his eight K's. He remains at 12-5 for the season.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 7/29, 10:46 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 13-5 win at Texas. He had no walks and racked up 13 strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander collected his fourth win of July, and his 12th of 2009 - which currently ties for the MLB lead. He ranks second in the majors with 172 strikeouts, and tied his season high with 13 tonight.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 7/24, 3:06 PM CT
Justin Verlander was excellent again on Friday as the Tigers won the first game of their doubleheader against the White Sox by a score of 5-1. Verlander went all nine innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits while walking four and striking out four.

Our View: Verlander had it going again today, and he was said to be hitting 100 MPH in the ninth inning. When he is on, he is nearly untouchable, and that's what happened today. Obviously, Verlander is the cream of the crop when it comes to fantasy pitching, and he will usually have more than four strikeouts in a game like this.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 7/18, 3:10 PM CT
Justin Verlander was good on Saturday, striking out seven in seven innings while allowing just two runs, but received no run support as the Tigers lost 2-1 to the Yankees.

Our View: Verlander was his usual dominant self on Saturday, but just simply took a hard luck loss. He hasn't always been a great second half pitcher, but you should still expect great things from him in 2009 going forward.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 7/18, 9:00 AM CT
Justin Verlander has had his scheduled start moved to Saturday from Sunday, according to MLive.com.

Our View: The move was made by manager Jim Leyland because Sunday's starter, Edwin Jackson, pitched in the All-Star game while Verlander did not. Be sure to adjust your lineup as soon as possible.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 7/12, 3:13 PM CT
Justin Verlander was outstanding on Sunday in the Tigers' 10-1 win over the Indians. Verlander went seven shutout innings and allowed five hits while walking three and striking out eight. He is now 10-4 on the year.

Our View: Verlander has been lights out after a bit of a slow start, and he looks like the dominating force fantasy owners have come to expect. He will be a strong play in the second half, and he should get even better as the Tigers battle for a playoff spot.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 7/7, 9:17 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits over six innings in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Royals at Comerica Park. He had no walks and racked up 11 strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander now leads the Tigers with nine wins, passing Rick Porcello (8). He also leads the AL with 141 strikeouts. He has been a major reason why the Tigers rank atop the AL Central standings.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 7/1, 6:09 PM CT
Justin Verlander was roughed up for four earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 5-1 loss at Oakland. He had one walk and six strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View: He is off to a poor start in July, after holding a 2-1 record and 2.91 ERA over five outings last month. He is still tied for the team lead with eight wins, and leads the AL with 130 strikeouts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 6/26, 11:01 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up three earned runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings in Friday's 5-4 loss at Houston.

Our View: He takes a no-decision, and remains at 8-3 for the season. He holds a 2.91 ERA this month, and should remain active in fantasy leagues. He was leading the AL with 118 strikeouts heading into tonight's game as well.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 6/21, 3:10 PM CT
Justin Verlander brushed off his bad start against the Cardinals last week and went out and dominated the Brewers on Sunday. He allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks over 7.2 innings and struck out eight in the Tigers' 3-2 win.

Our View: Verlander is now 8-3 on the year and has allowed two runs or less in nine of his last 11 starts. He also leads the AL in strikeouts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 6/21, 2:18 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Tigers have adjusted their rotation to spread out the team's two workhorses: Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson. Verlander's start will be moved up to Friday.

Our View: He will get his normal four days of rest, and new arrival Alfredo Figaro will pitch on six days of rest. The move is expected to give the bullpen more rest. The move won't effect Verlander's fantasy status and he is still a must start every time out this season.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 6/16, 10:12 PM CT
Justin Verlander was roughed up for five earned runs on eight hits over a mere four innings of work in Tuesday's 11-2 loss at St. Louis. He issued two walks with four strikeouts.

Our View: He took his first loss since April 17, and should be able to bounce back fine following tonight's poor outing. He only gave up one earned run over his previous two starts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 6/11, 10:32 AM CT
Manager Jim Leyland called Justin Verlander's one-run complete game against the White Sox on Wednesday a "masterpiece", according to USA Today. He added, "He looks like a totally different pitcher than last year."

Our View: Verlander hit 100 mph on his 122nd and final pitch of the game. White Sox players after the game were not shy about praising Verlander's stuff either. There may not be a more dominating pitcher going at the current moment.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 6/10, 9:45 PM CT
Justin Verlander threw his second complete game of the season as the Tigers defeated the White Sox 2-1 on Wednesday. He struck out nine while allowing six hits, one walk, and one earned run in the game.

Our View: Verlander has not lost a game since April 17. Since then he has completed at least seven innings in six of his 10 starts. He has allowed a mere eight runs in his last nine outings while striking out 81 hitters.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 6/5, 9:02 PM CT
Justin Verlander only allowed four hits over eight scoreless innings in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Angels at Comerica Park. He had four walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: It was a great outing other than the four free passes, and it is a shame he was dealt a no-decision rather than a win due to poor run support from his teammates. He earned a win in each of his previous three outings.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 6/4, 4:46 PM CT
Justin Verlander has been named the AL Pitcher of the Month for May, according to the Sports Network. Verlander earned the honor by going 5-0 with a 1.52 ERA over six starts in the month. He also led the majors with 56 strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander is enjoying a strong comeback campaign so far after going 11-17 in 2008. He is currently 6-2 with a 3.63 ERA, and shall remain active in fantasy lineups.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 5/30, 9:17 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed three earned runs on nine hits over six innings in Saturday's 6-3 win at Baltimore. He had one walk with five strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander is hot as he earned a win in three straight starts. He went 5-0 over six outings in May, and has not taken a loss since April 17.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 5/25, 4:35 PM CT
Justin Verlander improved to 5-2 with seven shutout innings against the Royals on Monday. He struck out eight while scattering five hits and no walks as the Tigers won 13-1.

Our View: Verlanders has earned the win in five of his last six starts and lowered his ERA from 9.00 to 3.55 in the process. He has struck out 60 batters in his last 42.1 innings of work. Verlander ranks first in the AL with 85 strikeouts and he looks like the workhorse from the 2006-07 years.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 5/20, 9:50 PM CT
Justin Verlander was excellent again on Wednesday as the Tigers beat the Rangers 5-3. Verlander went six innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out eight.

Our View: Verlander has been nearly unhittable in his last few starts, and he is starting to look like the elite fantasy pitcher he once was. It is probably too late to get Verlander for cheap in a trade, so those of you who acted early are seeing it pay off now.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 5/14, 3:23 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed two earned runs on five hits over 6.1 innings of work in Thursday's 6-5 loss at the Twins. He racked up 13 strikeouts and issued three walks.

Our View: This was a great effort from Verlander, but unfortunately he was dealt a no decision, as the Twins rallied to score six runs in the seventh inning. He has reached double-digits in strikeouts in each of his last three starts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 5/8, 8:30 PM CT
Justin Verlander was masterful on Friday. He tossed a complete game two-hit shutout against the Indians for his third win of the season. He walked two and struck out 11.

Our View: This is the Justin Verlander fantasy owners have been waiting for. This was his third strong outing in a row and he's showing signs of turning his season around. He has allowed just one earned run in 23 innings over his last three starts and has struck out 31 in that span.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/3, 2:59 PM CT
Justin Verlander turned in his second excellent start in a row on Sunday, going seven innings and allowing only one run on two hits with three walks and eleven strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander seems to be turning things around after his last two starts, and Verlander owners must be telling everyone "I told you so". When he is on, he is elite. It still remains to be seen if he can show consistency, but for now he is looking good.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 4/27, 8:39 PM CT
Justin Verlander had his best outing of the season by a good margin as the Tigers beat the Yankees 4-2 on Monday. He allowed seven hits in seven innings of shutout pitching. He struck out nine batters against no walks.

Our View: Verlander generated just three ground balls against nine flyballs and that ratio continues to be a concern. However, he was able to get critical strikeouts tonight and kept the Yankees from crossing the plate. He now has 34 strike outs in 38 innings to go with a 6.75 ERA.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 4/23, 12:29 AM CT
Justin Verlander continued his struggles on Wednesday as he gave up seven runs in just five innings of work. He gave up nine hits and walked two while striking out five.

Our View: Verlander is still not very good with an ERA at 9.00. His potential is still very high, but until he puts it together he is a risky start in any league. Don't drop him, but starting him at this point is iffy.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 4/11, 3:07 PM CT
Justin Verlander struck out eight batters in five innings Saturday, but he also walked four and allowed three runs (one earned). He received a no-decision in the Tigers' win.

Our View: Justin was certainly better this time out, but he was still a little erratic. He'll have to cleans things up before fantasy owners will start to trust him.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 4/6, 9:30 PM CT
Justin Verlander lasted just 3.2 innings on opening day as he allowed eight hits, two walks, and eight earned runs. He threw 49 of his 80 pitches for strikes on his way to recording 11 outs.

Our View: Verlander had a dreadful start and finish to his 2008 season. He did manage a few good starts in between, but it's starting to look like his days of being an effective ace may be over.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 4/1, 3:47 PM CT
In his second outing against the Braves in less than a week, Justin Verlander fared substantially worse. He allowed nine hits, seven earned runs, and two home runs while striking out one in five innings of work.

Our View: Verlander had enjoyed a pretty good spring up to this point, and he will remain the Tigers ace of the staff. However, we recommend to not let his poor 2008 season wander to far from your thoughts when considering him at the draft table.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 3/27, 2:49 PM CT
Justin Verlander, whom manager Jim Leyland named as Detroit's Opening Day starter earlier in the day, looked flawless against the Braves on Friday, giving up just two hits and one walk while failing to allow a run and striking out three in seven innings.

Our View: Verlander has been untouchable over his last three spring outings, surrendering a mere five hits in 18 innings. After looking like one of the game's most promising young pitchers in 2006 and 2007 before suffering a pretty significant setback last year, Verlander appears poised to bounce back in 2009. He's been falling outside of the top-30 pitchers, and sometimes even top-40, of some drafts this year, and has very real potential to regain his status as a top-10 or 15 hurler. It probably wouldn't be advisable to let him slip past the top-25 among starting pitchers.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 3/23, 10:22 AM CT
Justin Verlander has fared well in each of his last two outings, which pleased skipper Jim Leyland, according to the Detroit News. Leyland said, "He's really working hard on some things he's figured out himself and with (pitching coach) Rick Knapp. He's making improvements that are good to see. Driving the ball down and trying to eliminate as many purpose-less pitches are possible. We're trying to cut those down to a minimum. He's been working on that and getting a lot better."

Our View: This is encouraging news for Verlander, but Leyland is yet to name his opening day starter. Verlander won 18 games in 2007, prior to his disappointing 2008 campaign in which he stuggled with an 11-17 record and a 4.84 ERA. He could be headed for a solid comeback, and is worth targeting among the top 35-40 fantasy hurlers.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 3/22, 3:49 PM CT
Justin Verlander struck out four and allowed just two hits over five innings Sunday against the Marlins.

Our View: With questions surrounding the likes of Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman, and Nate Robertson, the Tigers desperately need Verlander to be the calming influence in the rotation, which means reverting back to his 2006 and 2007 form.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 3/17, 4:08 PM CT
Justin Verlander threw six innings of one hit ball on Tuesday in a 1-1 draw with the Astros. He allowed one earned run while walking three and striking out two.

Our View: This seems more like the Verlander of old. His velocity has returned and although his control wasn't spot on, he had his finest outing of the spring so far. He may be making his way back to the upper echelon of fantasy starters. Stay tuned.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 3/12, 11:17 AM CT
According to the Detroit News, Justin Verlander has altered his delivery and regained his lost velocity. A new approach and a softer landing has Verlander throwing 95-97 again.

Our View: Whatever you say, Justin. 95 to 97 mph sounds like the Verlander of old, but at this point fantasy owners are going to need to see it to believe it. Until he proves he can consistently pitch effectively, he's not a top fantasy hurler.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 3/11, 4:20 PM CT
Justin Verlander was hit hard for the second start in a row Wednesday, allowing three hits, four walks and four runs (two earned) over two innings.

Our View: Verlander is obviously still struggling with his command. His penchant for walking hitters is what transformed him from ace (2007) to bust (2008), and he'll need to right the ship if he doesn't want 2009 to follow suit. Fantasy owners, tread with caution.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 3/7, 1:41 AM CT
Justin Verlander surrendered three earned runs on four hits in two and a third innings Friday evening against the Yankees.

Our View: Verlander regressed dramatically from his first start of the spring, which received glowing reviews from the pitcher himself.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 2/25, 2:32 PM CT
Justin Verlander fired two scoreless innings in today's exhibition opener against the Braves, according to the Detroit News. He only allowed one hit and said, "I felt I was pounding the zone, attacking the hitters and not avoiding contact -- letting them put the ball in play but not with the barrel of the bat."

Our View: Verlander is off to a good start as he attempts to put a disappointing 2008 campaign behind him. He could be a nice value pick in fantasy drafts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 2/22, 11:45 PM CT
Justin Verlander will be the first starter for the Detroit Tigers when they start their Grapefruit League play, according to MLive.com.

Our View: Verlander is a prime candidate to have a big-time bounce back year, so fantasy owners would do well to keep that in mind.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 2/3, 4:17 PM CT
Justin Verlander agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract worth $3,675,000 with the Detroit Tigers, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Verlander gets a big pay day after going 11-17 and a 4.84 ERA in 33 starts with the Tigers. Fantasy owners are hoping he returns to his 2006 and 2007 form when he went a combined 35-15.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 1/23, 9:40 AM CT
Justin Verlander held a 4.84 ERA and barely passable 1.40 WHIP over 33 starts in 2008, but remains as confident as ever heading into the new campaign, according to the Detroit News. He said, "I've always believed in my ability. That's just the way I'm built. What I went through was frustrating, but I don't think I got too frustrated. I'm always able to have a short-term memory and look on the positive side of things. I don't think it's that easy to put a finger on it and say, 'This is what went wrong.' I look at it and say there was a stretch in the middle of the season when a lot went right and I was throwing the ball very well. I need to get back to that."

Our View: Verlander has started throwing earlier this winter, and with more long-toss than in the past. He noted that he feels good with the way the ball is leaving his hand. He won 18 games in 2007, and could be a good fantasy bargain if he can get back on track in 2009.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 9/28, 7:47 PM CT
Tigers pitching coach Chuck Hernandez and bullpen coach Jeff Jones both will be relieved of their duties after Monday's game in Chicago with the White Sox according to the mlive.com.

Our View: Someone had to go after the disastrous 2008 season in Detroit. Many pundits predicted the Tigers would make the World Series. Nobody thought they would be playing their last game needing a win to tie Kansas City for last place.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersFriday 9/26, 9:40 PM CT
Justin Verlander only allowed two earned runs on five hits over five innings in Friday's 6-4 win over the Rays at Comerica Park, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander snapped a five-game skid without a win, hence ending his season on a high note against the playoff-bound Rays.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 9/20, 10:07 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed four earned runs on five hits over four innings in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Cleveland at Progressive Field, with four walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Verlander falls to 10-17, and should be glad his disappointing 2008 campaign is almost over. He has lost four of his last five starts.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 9/14, 8:25 PM CT
Justin Verlander lost his 16th game of the year on Sunday as he permitted four White Sox runners to cross home plate in his 7.2 innings on the hill. Verlander allowed only two walks, but he struck out only two.

Our View: Verlander exists this outing with a 4.78 ERA which is more than a full run above his 3.64 mark the past two seasons. Verlander has allowed 18 ER in his last four starts (7.71 ERA) and simply has been unable to capture his previous level of success this season.

Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 9/6, 9:08 AM CT
Justin Verlander, who lost 15 games this season, is working on his mechanics, according to MLive.com. He only lasted 1.2 innings in his last outing and said, "I didn't feel very good and my control was erratic." The team found some changes in his delivery from previous seasons and are looking to fix his mechanics. Bullpen coach Jeff Jones said, "We are looking for Justin to create the same down angle as he comes down on the mound, and to see that his lower body is on target long enough." Verlander noted that he had a good bullpen session to work on those points, adding that work on mechanics for "muscle memory" must take place before changes carry over to the mound on game days.

Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't expect much from him for the remainder of September, but hopefully he can continue to work on his issues in the off-season and bounce back strong in 2009.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 9/1, 4:16 PM CT
Justin Verlander lost his 15th game of the season on Monday as he was torched for eight runs, give earned, in just 1.2 innings against the Yankees.

Our View: After seasons of 17 and 18 victories, Verlander amazingly has a chance to match those totals in the loss column this season. His current ERA of 4.74 is also more than a full run above his marks the past two seasons, so to call this campaign disappointing would be a major understatement. He has been awful.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 8/16, 9:25 PM CT
Justin Verlander bounced back from four straight rough outings and improved to 9-13 with a win over the Orioles on Saturday night. He held the O's to four hits and two unearned runs over six innings. Verlander walked three and struck out six.

Our View: It's too late for Verlander to salvage his very disappointing season, but it's nice to see him have an outing like this. It will be even nicer if he can string together a handful of effective showings.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 8/11, 10:42 PM CT
Justin Verlander lasted only 4.1 innings on Monday night as he gave up six runs on seven hits in the Tigers 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays.

Our View: Verlander has allowed 24 earned runs over his last four starts, the worst four game stretch in his career, as his ERA has climbed from 3.95 to 4.77, quite a fall for a pitcher who won 35 games in his firs two full seasons, the most since Dwight Gooden won 41 in 1984-85.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 8/6, 10:16 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight over 7 2/3 innings Wednesday in the Tigers' 5-1 loss to Chicago.

Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 7/31, 2:48 PM CT
Justin Verlander struck out nine batters Thursday, but the good news ends there. He allowed six runs on five hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Cleveland.

Our View: This is Justin's second straight poor outing after a superb stretch of starts. His next outing will be against the White Sox, who lit Verlander up two starts ago.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 7/26, 9:20 PM CT
Justin Verlander picked up his tenth loss of the season by surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in four innings against the White Sox. He allowed two home runs on the night.

Our View: Verlaner's ERA once again jumped over 4.00 after being below that mark for one game. He is still useful in fantasy leagues due to his strikeout potential, but those players who own him have yet another reason to be frustrated.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 7/20, 3:37 PM CT
Justin Verlander shut down the Orioles in Sunday's 5-1 win, as he only surrendered one earned run on three hits over 8.2 innings, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: He improves to 8-9 for the season, and just missed his second complete game. He extended his winning streak to four games, and has allowed two or less earned runs in eight straight starts. He is seemingly headed for a strong second half of the season.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 7/16, 10:09 PM CT
Justin Verlander still has a poor ERA (4.15) though his WHIP (1.27) is actually below his career mark of 1.29 as he is 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over his last four starts.

Our View: Since the start of June, Verlander has produced a 5-1 record with a 2.71 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP putting behind him the whispers that he was injured. He appears primed to continue the role he is currently on the rest of the way.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 7/13, 2:57 PM CT
Justin Verlander continues to improve, as he threw seven innings, allowing four hits and giving up just two earned runs while striking out eight in the Tigers 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Our View: Verlander has now gone seven straight starts without giving up more than two earned runs, and has got the win in five of those starts. Now may be a good time to try and acquire him from a fantasy owner who isn't paying close attention and instead sees his sub-.500 record and ERA over 4.00.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 7/8, 9:07 PM CT
Justin Verlander settled down after a first inning home run to earn his sixth victory of the season. He lasted seven innings, gave up two hits, one walk, and just two runs while striking out seven. His once bloated ERA is down to 4.24.

Our View: He is now 4-0 in his last six starts with a 2.54 ERA and a 36:14 K:BB ratio. Look for a dominant second half from the former AL Rookie of the Year.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 6/28, 10:26 AM CT
The Detroit Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the mound this evening as they welcome the Colorado Rockies for an interleague tangle, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Verlander is struggling despite his talent, touting a record of 4-9 with an ERA of 4.49 thus far. Thus far in June he has improved, going 2-1 over four starts, failing to allow more than three earned runs in each of those starts. The last time the 25-year-old toed the rubber, he baffled the San Diego Padres for 5 1/3 innings, as he struck out 10 batters, and allowed just two runs on five hits. He did, however, walk a season-high five batters in the 5-3 win.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 6/22, 8:03 PM CT
Justin Verlander picked up his first road victory of the season on Sunday as he struck out 10 Padres on his way to to his fourth win of the season.

Our View: Verlander continues to brings his ratios down (his ERA is 4.55 and his WHIP 1.31), signaling that perhaps he is becoming the pitcher he has been the past two seasons. One great sign is that over his last four starts he has averaged 9.22 K/9.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 6/22, 10:40 AM CT
Detroit RHP Justin Verlander gets the call to action today in support of the Tigers' effort against the San Diego Padres, according to the Miami Herald.

Our View: Verlander has been one of the biggest disappointments in the league this season, posting a 3-9 mark with a 4.55 earned run average. He received a no- decision on Monday against the San Francisco Giants, as he allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits. The 25-year-old hurler, who has never faced the Padres, has been atrocious away from home this season, going 0-5 with a 5.35 ERA in his six road starts.San Diego will counter with veteran Randy Wolf, who was battered by the New York Yankees in his last trip to the hill. Wolf, who is 4-1 in seven home starts, will be making his first-ever start against the Tigers.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 6/16, 11:34 PM CT
Justin Verlander allowed three runs (two earned), five hits and a walk to the Giants while striking out seven for the Tigers. He picked up a no-decision when Fernando Rodney blew the game in the eighth inning.

Our View: Thats the fifth quality start in six outings for Verlander who has clearly turned around his slow start of late as he is once again starting to resemble the pitcher who won 35 games the past two years for the Tigers.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersWednesday 6/11, 8:36 PM CT
The Detroit Tigers are sure to be happy with tonight's 5-1 win over the White Sox, happines in large part due to the work of RHP Justin Verlander . Verlander pitched the full game, going nine to allow just one run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Our View: After going 1-4 through May, Verland would like to get the wins going. Tonight is a definitive step in the right direction.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 5/31, 5:38 PM CT
Justin Verlander surrendered four runs on eight hits over seven innings in Saturday's 5-0 loss to Seattle, with two walks and one strikeout.

Our View: Verlander has now slipped to 2-8 for the season, with a 5.16 ERA. His record is terrible, but he has actually been pitching well as of late, as he only allowed four total earned runs over his previous three starts before today's loss. He is worth targeting if you can get him for a rock-bottom price.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 5/25, 3:09 PM CT
Justin Verlander pitched well in a no decision on Sunday, as Detroit fell to Minnesota 6-1. Verlander only allowed one run on five hits over seven innings, with three strikeouts and four walks. Other than the high walk count, it was a strong outing for him.

Our View: Verlander has now only surrendered two earned runs and nine hits over his last two starts. He is only 2-7 for the season, but is seemingly starting to turn things around and is worth targeting if you can get him for a rock-bottom price.

Justin Verlander allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out three in a tough luck 2-0 loss to rookie Luke Hochevar and the Royals. The Tigers starter suffered his seventh loss of the season.

Our View: It was Verlander's best performance of the season and while the loss stings, it was promising to see the hard-throwing right-hander have some success.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 5/8, 9:15 PM CT
Justin Verlander was hit hard yet again on Thursday as he allowed nine hits and five runs over six innings to fall to 1-6 on the year.

Our View: This is downright disturbing. Everyone keeps saying that Verlander is healthy, but the results say otherwise as he has allowed four or more earned runs in seven of his eight starts. Hopefully you have him reserved until the issues are resolved.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersMonday 5/5, 9:43 AM CT
Former Tigers' hurler and current Twins' broadcaster Jack Morris commented that Justin Verlander's shoulder has to be hurting because he's not extending his arm as he did last season, according to the Detroit Free Press. Verlander is 1-5, but recently stated that his arm feels great.

Our View: Verlander also holds a poor 1.44 WHIP and 6.28 ERA over 43 innings, with 20 walks. Something is not right with him, if not his shoulder. Keep him on the bench for the time being.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSaturday 5/3, 9:13 PM CT

Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersSunday 4/27, 10:29 PM CT
Justin Verlander gave up six runs, seven hits and four walks in 5.2 innings of work on Sunday night. Verlander won his first game on Tuesday, but struggled with his command in the process. Nothing changed tonight as the right-hander has now allowed four runs or more in five of his six starts.

Our View: Even skipper Jim Leyland knows that the Angels player personnel that are primarily fastball hitters, are a tough matchup for his right-hander. "This is a tough lineup for him," Leyland said. "It's a tough lineup for any pitcher." Verlander will eventually garner his command, but for now he's better left in reserve until he shows evidence of such.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersTuesday 4/22, 9:20 PM CT
Justin Verlander finally delivered a positive outing. After four rough starts, the right-hander held the Rangers to six hits and one run over six frames on Tuesday night. Verlander picked up his first win of the year.

Our View: Fantasy owners should be breathing a bit easier after this outing. We'd still like to see Verlander have a sharp outing that features a bunch of strikeouts, but we can't be too pick right now.
Justin Verlander, P, Detroit TigersThursday 4/17, 10:16 PM CT
Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander remained winless in four starts, falling to 0-3. The hard throwing right-hander allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings of work.

"I'm really working my shoulder hard," he said of a new offseason regimen. "I feel like it's working. Instead of dumbbells, I'm using manual resistance -- someone else applying resistance on the way up and me resisting on the way down. This is different than what I did last year, different and more intense. Last year was more dumbbells, and me being naive thinking I can just sort of halfway my way through these exercises and be able to make it through the year just fine."
