Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/31, 1:01 PM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have activated reliever Chris Ray from the disabled list.

Our View: Ray takes Brad Bergesen's spot on the roster, as he was placed on the DL with a bruised leg. No word on whether the O's will try Ray in the closer's role again, but he has to be considered at least a darkhorse candidate.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/20, 7:04 PM CT
Chris Ray (biceps tendinitis) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie on Friday, according to MASN.

Our View: Ray could potentially be a candidate to close for Baltimore by the end of the season, especially if they deal George Sherrill. Still, he's been atrocious in the majors this season and will have to prove his effectiveness in the minors before a recall to Baltimore is even considered.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/13, 8:36 AM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, Orioles' reliever Chris Ray left for the team's minor league complex on Sunday to begin a two week throwing program. If all goes well, he could begin a rehab assignment shorty after.

Our View: Ray was worried he might be done for the year, but now that he knows it is only tendinitis, he should return some time in August. He has had a very rough season, and at this point it doesn't look like he will be bouncing back. He should not be owned in any format.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 7/7, 7:59 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Orioles' reliever Chris Ray got good news on Monday, as he was diagnosed with right biceps tendinitis. He is not expected to be out for much more than the required 15 days he will spend on the DL.

Our View: It was thought earlier yesterday that Ray may be out for the season, but the doctor painted a far less serious picture. Ray will be back in two weeks, but he is still not a fantasy option in any format.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/6, 4:42 PM CT
As expected, Chris Ray has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right biceps tendinitis, according to the Sports Network. Kam Mickolio was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: Ray won't be missed in fantasy leagues as he holds a 9.28 ERA and 2.30 WHIP over 21.1 innings of relief, with no saves. He was unable to push George Sherrill for the closer's role.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/6, 2:39 PM CT
Updating a previous report, the Baltimore Orioles are expected to place reliever Chris Ray on the 15-day DL with arm issues, according to the Baltimore Sun. In a corresponding move, the team is expected to recall pitcher Kam Mickolio from Triple-A Norfolk.

Our View: This move is expected to be announced as soon as later this afternoon, with Ray probably being sidelined for most, if not all, of the remainder of the season. He was a trendy pick before the year as a candidate who could unseat current closer Geroge Sherrill, but obviously things did not go as planned.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 7/5, 10:46 PM CT
Chris Ray is having his right shoulder examined by team doctors, according to the Baltimore Sun. After tonight's loss at Angel Stadium, Ray said, "Today my arm slot was down. I could feel it. I just could not get my arm up. Today was the first time since I have been back up that I could not find my arm angle. It is just been one of those things."

Our View: Ray declined to comment tonight when asked if he is feeling fine physically. The source believes it is likely Ray will land on the DL, but the Orioles are yet to update his status.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 6/26, 8:19 AM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, Orioles' reliever Chris Ray was rocked for five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings on Thursday against the Marlins. Ray was recently recalled from Triple-A after struggling early in the season.

Our View: The O's were hoping that Ray had it all figured out, but he looked like the same early season pitcher last night. He should not be considered for fantasy duty at this point, as it is unlikely the O's will trust him with any important duties if he can't get the job done.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 6/22, 10:28 PM CT
As expected, Chris Ray has been recalled by the Orioles from Triple-A Norfolk, according to TSN.

Our View: Ray could get some save chances if he can prove to be effective in a setup role upon his return to the Orioles' bullpen. He is worth holding as a flier for deeper fantasy leagues.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 6/22, 7:21 AM CT
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Orioles are planning to call up reliever Chris Ray from Triple-A Norfolk before Tuesday's series opener against the Marlins. Ray has been working on his command and mechanics, and could return to the setup role if he proves he has ironed out his flaws.

Our View: Ray was terrible early this season, but the O's seem to think he has gotten his problems figured out. Assuming he has, he could be an option for holds, or possibly even saves down the road. That is only if he really rebounds and becomes a consistent pitcher, which is a long shot.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 6/10, 7:22 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Chris Ray has refined his mechanics while in Triple-A. He has yet to allow a run in four appearances since being demoted.

Our View: The 27-year-old has a 9.39 ERA at the time of his demotion. He has 49 career saves, but has not returned to form since missing all of last season with Tommy John Surgery. He could be nearing a return to Baltimore within the month, and if does he may resume his setup duties shortly thereafter.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 5/28, 3:49 PM CT
Chris Ray has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles, according to the Sports Network. The club recalled David Hernandez from Norfolk as the adjoining move.

Our View: Ray held a poor 9.39 ERA and 2.28 WHIP over 17 appearances with the Orioles, and won't be missed in fantasy leagues while working on his command in the minors.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 4/6, 8:29 PM CT
Chris Ray allowed two runs in 0.2 innings on Monday against the Yankees. He allowed two hits, including a home run, and a walk in his brief appearance.

Our View: Ray didn't give a run all spring, but he was not at his best on Monday. He is the Orioles' second option to close behind George Sherrill.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 3/7, 9:50 AM CT
Chris Ray is feeling exceptional as he is making his return from Tommy John surgery, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Ray will be back in the bullpen for the Orioles this season and it is quite possible that he sees some opportunities this season.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 1/13, 4:29 PM CT
The Orioles avoided arbitration with Chris Ray by inking the reliever to a one-year deal Tuesday. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Our View: Manager Dave Trembley has talked about the possibility of Ray and George Sherrill sharing closer duties this year. We would put our money on Ray ending the year with the job.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 8/19, 9:11 PM CT
Chris Ray is ready to step up his minor league rehab work. The closer will pitch one inning for High-A Frederick on Friday and one inning for Low-A Aberdeen on Monday, MLB.com reports. Ray underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-August of 2007. The Orioles don't have a timeline for Ray returning to the majors.

Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't get too excited. Even if Ray moves to the majors at some point, we doubt he'll return to the closer's role. The Orioles just want to get him ready for 2009, when he should be the stopper again.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 8/11, 9:31 AM CT
Chris Ray, who is slowly recovering from right elbow surgery, threw an inning in the Gulf Coast League on Friday, according to the Baltimore Sun. He threw 17 strikes in 22 pitches in his first live action since surgery last August.

Our View: He should remain in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, as the team does not see the advantage of having him pitch in Baltimore for a week or two in September.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 8/7, 11:34 AM CT
Chris Ray who is slowly recovering from right elbow surgery, does not expect to return to the Orioles this season, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: He could be cleared to pitch in a couple of games in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in a couple of weeks, but the team does not see the benefit of having him pitch in Baltimore for a week or two in September.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 7/5, 11:16 AM CT
Chris Ray pitched in a simulated game on Wednesday, but he isn't close to being ready for real action. "He'll just continue his throwing program and mound progression," manager Dave Trembley informs the Baltimore Sun. "He has not been slowed down." Ray is coming off Tommy John surgery, and he aims to be back to the majors by late August or early September. The Orioles say they are being conservative and aren't counting on him to return this season.

Our View: We don't expect Ray to regain his closer's role this year, and it'll be interesting to see how the Orioles handle the situation next spring if George Sherrill finishes with a strong second half.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 5/23, 4:52 PM CT
Chris Ray, recovering from Tommy John surgery, had his third bullpen session Friday, making 30 throws, according to the Baltimore Sun. He expects to go on a minor league rehab assignment on Aug. 1 and still expects to pitch for the Orioles once rosters expand in September.

Our View: It's unlikely Ray will close any games this year, especially with George Sherrill doing so well, but he should be in line to get his job back in 2009 if all goes well in his rehab.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 5/13, 6:49 PM CT
The Orioles report RHP Chris Ray and LHP Adam Lowewen is tentatively scheduled to throw a full bullpen session next weekend, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Both pitchers are rehabbing in the minors and will be completing their bullpen sessions in St. Petersburgh, Florida. Ray continues to work towards a return from Tommy John surgery. Loewen had a screw inserted into his left elbow in June to repair a stress fracture and appears to be recovering well. The club hopes both will return before we reach the All-Star break. We will update as news becomes available.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 4/12, 11:11 AM CT
Chris Ray, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, has progressed favorably in his throwing program and will begin pitching off flat ground early next month, with hopes of throwing from a mound in mid-May, according to the Washington Post. Manager Trembley noted that it might be a few months until Ray is ready to do so, however.

Our View: Ray will compete with George Sherrill to get his closer's job back when he ultimately returns.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 2/26, 9:19 AM CT
Chris Ray, coming back from Tommy John surgery, expanded his throwing program Monday to include 25 tosses from 60 feet to go along with 25 tosses from 45 feet. "I'm just sticking to the schedule," Ray said in the Baltimore Sun. "I'm not sure when the next jump is, but I'll probably be on this a few more times. I feel really good. I'm pleased how my elbow is feeling right now." Ray hopes to pitch for the O's at some point this season, but he may not go back to his closer role until 2009. George Sherrill is the favorite to open the year as the team's stopper.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 2/16, 10:23 AM CT
Chris Ray threw on Friday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. "I think that kind of made everybody's day," manager Dave Trembley tells the Baltimore Sun. Ray is hoping to return before the end of this season, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect him to regain the closer's role this year.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 2/14, 5:23 PM CT
Chris Ray, who is still recovering from ligament-reconstructive surgery on his right elbow, expects to be pitching again sometime this season, according to the Baltimore Sun. In the mean time, Baltimore wants to give recently acquired George Sherrill a chance to earn the closer job.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 8/17, 5:00 PM CT
Chris Ray underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday, meaning he'll most likely miss the entire 2008 season, according to the AP. "Right now, I think we have to assume he won't be around for 2008," Orioles president Andy MacPhail said. "We will be conservative." Ray went on the DL July 21 with a sprained right elbow.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSunday 8/12, 6:43 AM CT
Chris Ray is set to begin a throwing program at the Orioles' minor league complex in Sarasota, Fla. on Monday. He probably will stay there for three weeks, according to the Baltimore Sun. Once that stretch is done, Ray will go on a rehab assignment and, barring a setback along the way, come off the disabled list sometime next month. He's recovering from a sprained ligament in his pitching elbow.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/30, 6:39 AM CT
Chris Ray underwent a second MRI late last week, which confirmed that he has only a sprained ligament with no tears, fractures or loose bodies in his elbow. "Hopefully, we'll get him back before the year is out," president Andy MacPhail told the Baltimore Sun. "He's going to rest it and do some rehab, but it's not something that requires surgery." He won't begin throwing for about three weeks, and it will be a couple of weeks after that before he could rejoin the O's, barring any setbacks.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesFriday 7/27, 12:42 PM CT
The Orioles will be without closer Chris Ray for over a month. The Washington Post reports he is expected to miss at least five weeks with a sprain of the medial ligament in his right elbow. He may be out even longer if an MRI scheduled for later in the week reveals more damage. Jamie Walker has picked up the saves since he’s gone down, but you should expect to see Danys Baez receive some opportunities, as well.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 7/25, 5:40 PM CT
The Orioles placed Chris Ray on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a sore elbow, according to the AP. He hasn't pitched since Friday. "(Trainer) Richie Bancells told me it's a three-week rehab and then a throwing program," interim manager Dave Trembley said. This injury may eventually require surgery, but the Orioles aren't looking at that as an option right now. With Ray sidelined, the O's will likely use a committee, including the likes of Jamie Walker, Danys Baez and Chad Bradford, to close out games.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesWednesday 7/25, 1:45 AM CT
An MRI of Chris Ray's throwing arm taken on Monday revealed a bone spur, an injury that he has likely been pitching with for an undetermined length of time, according to the Orioles official site. Ray is taking anti-inflammatory medications, but manager Dave Trembley said it's too early to determine whether the injury will be something that sidelines Ray for an extended period of time. Jamie Walker wound up closing Tuesday (perhaps because the Devil Rays had a handful of lefties scheduled to hit), with Paul Shuey working the eighth.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/23, 6:27 AM CT
Chris Ray was unavailable for Sunday's game due to stiffness in his arm. "I woke up and it was just a little stiff," Ray told the Baltimore Sun. "Warming up, I just couldn't get it going. We've got a day off [Monday]. We'll give it some time and see how it feels on Tuesday." He'll be examined further on Monday, at which point there should be a better idea about his condition, though Ray isn't concerned. Jamie Walker picked up the save on Sunday and would get more chances, along with Chad Bradford and Danys Baez, if Ray ends up shut down for a while.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesTuesday 7/17, 9:59 AM CT
After studying some videotape recently, Chris Ray came to the conclusion that he needed to do a better job of mixing up his pitches, according to the Baltimore Sun. "I'm coming in and mixing up my pitches a lot more, instead of just throwing fastball, fastball and fastball," said Ray, who has 16 saves in 20 opportunities. "That's my best pitch, but I need to mix it up so hitters keep guessing. It causes a lot of swings and misses and it causes a lot of mis-hits. Now, if I throw a slider on the first pitch, that could be in the back of [a hitter's] head." Ray credits his realization with his recent success - he hasn't allowed a run in his last five outings.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesMonday 7/2, 6:30 AM CT
Chris Ray took his sixth loss of the season on Friday, and Paul Shuey picked up a save for the Orioles on Saturday. Although Ray got a break on Saturday, he remains the primary closer for the O's, according to the Baltimore Sun. However, interim manager Dave Trembley said that Ray could get spelled in that role at times. "By no means am I going to take away Chris Ray's opportunities to close the game," he said. "On the other hand, if I think it's in the best interest of the team to put somebody else out there, and I'm not told differently, I'll do it." Ray has been struggling and could be replaced from time to time based on matchups, but for now, he remains the O's closer.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesThursday 6/14, 10:41 AM CT
Chris Ray took his fifth loss of the season Wednesday night against the Nationals. He was in his second inning of work when he allowed three runs. Ray now has a 4.70 ERA.
Chris Ray, P, Baltimore OriolesSaturday 9/23, 9:48 PM CT
Chris Ray tweaked a hamstring fielding a bunt Friday night and was not available Saturday, according to the Baltimore Sun. Ray is considered day-to-day. Manager Sam Perlozzo said he will "mix and match" his bullpen as needed with Ray out.
