Michael Wuertz, P, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 7/28, 10:57 AM CT
Among other teams, the Atlanta Braves are known to be pursuing A's reliever Michael Wuertz, according to FoxSports.com.

Our View: Wuertz has been lights out the A's this year, striking out 62 batters in just 47.1 innings, while posting a sub-3.00 ERA for most of the season. His WHIP currently rests at 1.06, while hitters are batting just .216 against him. Fully expect him to be dealt before Friday.

The A's used Michael Wuertz in Thursday's save situation against the Rangers. He gave up two hits, including a solo home run to Andruw Jones, while striking out another in earning his first save of the season.

Our View: There have been some reports that Brad Ziegler was unavailable due to non-baseball related reasons. We believe he still has the closer's job in Oakland, but if he is unavailable in the future, it looks like Wuertz will get the call.

Michael Wuertz is expected to make the Athletics' opening day roster as a middle reliever despite a 9.64 ERA in spring action, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Wuertz should be left for deeper AL-only leagues that use middle relievers. He held a 1.43 WHIP over 44.2 innings with the Cubs in 2008.

Updating an earlier report, Michael Wuertz has reportedly been dealt from the Cubs to the Athletics in exchange for minor leaguers Richie Robnett and Justin Sellers, according to MLBTradeRumors.com.

Our View: The righty reliever should see more innings of work in Oakland after leaving a deep and talented Cubs' bullpen, but still only holds fantasy value in deeper leagues that feature middle men.

Michael Wuertz is garnering interest from some MLB clubs, according to Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio.

Our View: Levine expects the Cubs to deal the reliever as soon as today, with Oakland a potential landing spot. The 30-year-old vet would be best-suited to leave Chicago, as he would have to fight for innings in a deep and talented Cubs' bullpen.

The Cubs have avoided salary arbitration with Michael Wuertz by signing the reliever to a one-year contract, according to the Associated Press. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: Wuertz held a barely passable 1.43 WHIP over 44.2 innings of relief last season, and does not look to hold any fantasy value while fighting for playing time out of a deep and talented Cubs' bullpen.

The Cubs have optioned reliever Michael Wuertz to Triple-A Iowa. He is 1-1 with a 3.55 ERA but has allowed nine runs (six earned) over his last six appearances.

Our View: We don't imagine that this news affects too many fantasy teams.

The Tigers are looking to acquire some bullpen help, and it appears that the Cubs' Michael Wuertz has landed on their radar, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Northsiders have apparently inquired about Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames. Wuertz has been terrific out of the Cubs pen the last three year and would give the Tigers some stability with Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya beginning the year on the DL.
Michael Wuertz, P, Oakland AthleticsMonday 1/21, 7:56 PM CT
Michael Wuertz agreed to a one-year, $860,000 contract with the Cubs Monday. Wuertz posted a 3.48 ERA and 9.8 K/9 rate in 73 games last year, but the fact that he'll receive no consideration for the closer role limits his value in fantasy.

Michael Wuertz would like to be considered for the closer's role if Ryan Dempster is moved back to the rotation. "Being a competitor, that's one of the things you've got to love. It's an important part of the game. And like they always say, the 27th out is the toughest to get," he tells the Chicago Sun-Times. Wuertz owns a 1.80 ERA over 22 appearances this season.

Michael Wuertz could get into a game in the next couple of days, the Cubs official site reports. He's been dealing with a strained pitching shoulder.

Michael Wuertz isn't too concerned about being sidelined with a strained right shoulder, the Cubs official site reports. Wuertz has experienced some tightness the last two springs. "My arm strength is good," Wuertz said. "It's been kind of tight. It felt a little different on one throw, and instead of doing anything crazy, I had it checked out."
Michael Wuertz, P, Oakland AthleticsSunday 7/23, 10:58 AM CT
The Cubs recalled Michael Wuertz from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday to replace Scott Williamson on the roster, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wuertz was phenomenal in his time with Iowa, posting a 1.73 ERA with 67 strikeouts and only nine walks in 41 2/3 innings.
