Dan Ortmeier, LF, Colorado RockiesSunday 7/6, 7:49 AM CT
Dan Ortmeier is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment today with Single-A San Jose, according to the SF Chronicle. He is recovering from a broken left middle finger.

Our View: Ortmeier lost his job at first base because he struggled with a .219 average over 64 at-bats, with 18 strikeouts. He isn't worth waiting for as a fantasy prospect this season.

Dan Ortmeier, who is recovering from a fractured finger, is expected to begin his rehab on Sunday with either Triple-A Fresno or Single-A San Jose, this according to MLB.com.

Dan Ortmeier had another X-ray of his broken left middle finger on Friday that revealed the finger is healing but still fractured, this according to the Mercury News. Ortmeier, who has been on the disabled list for two weeks, said he believes he broke the finger just above the top knuckle during early work in Florida or Arizona when he was catching flyballs at the outfield wall, often crashing into the wall fingers-first.

Our View: Ortmeier said he will meet with a hand specialist this week to further evaluate his progress, but no timetable has been established for his return.

Dan Ortmeier has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a broken left middle finger, according to the AP. Manager Bruce Bochy stated, "He said he was fine to go but you could tell it was affecting him. I’d say we’re looking at four weeks." The Giants called up outfielder Brian Horwitz from Triple-A Fresno.

Our View: Ortmeier was only hitting .219 over 64 at-bats this season with the Giants, and held no fantasy value.

Dan Ortmeier will no longer be a switch-hitter and is going to try to hit exclusively from the right side, according to the SF Chronicle. The rookie is only hitting .143 over 14 at-bats, and Manager Bochy wants to see if it will help by keeping him on the right side, which is his natural position.

Giants skipper Bruce Bochy told Dan Ortmeier on Friday that he will not start at first base in Monday's season opener in Los Angeles, this according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Bochy told the paper that Rich Aurilia will play first base, with newcomer Jose Castillo starting at third. After being considered by many as the starter at first base heading into the regular season, Ortmeier will simply make the team, we believe, and he'll receive at bats behind Aurilia.

Dan Ortmeier had a good day at the plate against the Cubs on Wednesday as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI, which is only his second of the spring. He raised his average to .204 but struck out 12 times in only 49 at-bats, and is not having a favorable impact as expected this spring for the Giants.

Dan Ortmeier had a rough day at the plate as he struck out twice over three at-bats. He was expected to be the Giants featured first baseman this season, but is not helping his cause as he currently has the most strikeouts on the team.

The first base job is Dan Ortmeier's to lose heading into spring training, according to MLB.com. A converted outfielder, Ortmeier hit .287 with six homers in 157 at-bats for the Giants last year. He'll likely have to fend off veteran Rich Aurilia for the job, though Aurilia would probably start at third if the season began today.

Dan Ortmeier is expected to compete for the first base job this spring with Rich Aurilia. A converted outfielder, Ortmeier hit .287 with six homers in 157 at-bats last year. He just started playing first last August. "But I respect that because I want to be ready to compete and win a job," Ortmeier said in the Mercury News. "That was my mindset from the first day of the offseason and it remains the same today. Whether we sign somebody tomorrow or we don't sign anybody at all, I'm focused on being healthy and ready to contribute."

The Giants optioned Dan Ortmeier to Triple-A Fresno on Monday, according to the AP. "Ortmeier did a great job," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's not a case where he's going down because of his play. He had some big hits for us. He showed he can play up here and handle himself." In 52 at-bats with the Giants, he hit .269 with two homers and six RBI.
