Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 1/19, 3:49 PM CT
The Astros and Humberto Quintero have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $750,000 deal, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.

Our View: Look for Quintero to battle J.R. Towles this spring training for the starting gig at catcher, though his lack of much offense severely limits his fantasy potential.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 8/24, 11:16 AM CT
The Houston Chronicle is reporting that catching duties will be split for the rest of the season for the Astros between Humberto Quintero and Chris Coste.

Our View: Quintero is Wandy Rodriguez's personal catcher, and Coste is Roy Oswalt's. The two will probably split time when any of the other starters are on the mound, and if one gets hot he would probably see a majority of the time. Neither catcher warrants any fantasy consideration, especially since their playing time will be erratic.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSaturday 8/1, 8:49 PM CT
Humberto Quintero went 3-for-3 in tonight's 3-1 loss at St. Louis. All three of his knocks were singles.

Our View: Quintero was in need of a solid performance, as he was hitless over his previous five games (nine at-bats). He only hit .100 over 30 at-bats in July as well.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosFriday 7/17, 12:31 AM CT
Humberto Quintero provided all the offense Houston would need on Thursday with his fifth inning home run as the Astros shutout the Dodgers 3-0 in L.A.

Our View: It was Quintero's first home run of the season. The Astros backup catcher doesn't play enough to even warrant a look in NL-only leagues.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSunday 6/21, 11:17 PM CT
Humberto Quintero was a late scratch for Sunday's game against the Twins due to back spasms, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: He expects to be fine by Tuesday, and is not worried about landing on the DL with the ailment. Either way, his fantasy value is limited while working behind starter Ivan Rodriguez at catcher.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSunday 6/7, 5:10 PM CT
Backup catcher Humberto Quintero went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the Astros' 6-4 win over the Pirates on Sunday.

Our View: Quintero had a nice day, but doesn't play with enough regularity to warrant any real fantasy consideration. Pudge Rodriguez will continue to see most of the time behind the plate.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosWednesday 5/13, 8:29 AM CT
Humberto Quintero has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from a strained right shoulder, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: Quintero is expected to start Wednesday's game at Colorado to give veteran Ivan Rodriguez some rest. Quintero will see action, but his fantasy value will be limited as long as Rodriguez remains intact as the No. 1 catcher.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 5/11, 7:17 PM CT
Humberto Quintero, recovering from a strained right shoulder, will be activated from the DL before Houston's game on Tuesday and replace J.R. Towles on Houston's roster, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Quintero still will have no fantasy value as the clear backup to Ivan Rodriguez.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosFriday 5/8, 7:46 AM CT
Humberto Quintero will start a four-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock today, according to the Houston Chronicle. He is recovering from a strained right shoulder.

Our View: Barring a setback, Quintero will be activated from the DL on Tuesday when the Astros start a three-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field. He will not hold much fantasy value as a backup catcher as long as Ivan Rodriguez stays healthy.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosWednesday 5/6, 8:07 AM CT
Humberto Quintero has progressed well from his strained right shoulder and is eligible to come off the DL Sunday, according to the Houston Chronicle. He played catch from 150 feet Tuesday without any issues, and also took full batting practice.

Our View: Quintero's fantasy value will be limited upon his return to Houston while providing depth behind starting catcher Ivan Rodriguez. Quintero was 0-for-8 this season prior to landing on the DL.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 5/4, 7:59 AM CT
Humberto Quintero played catch from about 120 feet while recovering from a strained right shoulder Sunday, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "I feel better. Monday I will throw more." He also hit 30 balls off a tee and another 20 from soft tosses.

Our View: Quintero will provide adequate depth at catcher for Houston upon his return, but his fantasy value will be limited as long as Ivan Rodriguez stays healthy as the starter.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosThursday 4/30, 7:50 AM CT
Humberto Quintero is progressing from his strained right shoulder as he made around a dozen throws from 70 feet Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle. Manager Cecil Cooper said, "I was surprised that he was throwing. I was surprised to see him out there. He did not throw a lot. But he said he felt much better today."

Our View: This is encouraging news, but Quintero won't hold much fantasy value when he returns to Houston as long as Ivan Rodriguez stays intact as the No. 1 catcher.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 4/28, 8:04 AM CT
Humberto Quintero will start shoulder exercises today for the first time since being placed on the DL with a strained right shoulder, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: He is feeling better, but the right side of his neck is still very sore. Quintero believes he will be cleared to start playing catch Wednesday or Thursday. Quintero's fantasy value will be limited upon his return to Houston while serving as a backup catcher behind Ivan Rodriguez.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSaturday 4/25, 3:51 PM CT
Humberto Quintero has been placed on the 15 day DL due to a right shoulder injury he suffered when he was run over at a collision at the plate, according to the Astros Official Website.

Our View: Quintero was absolutely trucked by Mike Cameron on a clean play at the plate, so it's no surprise he will be shelved. J.R. Towles will be recalled on Saturday to serve as the backup to Ivan Rodriguez who has struggled at the dish with a .236 average through 55 ABs.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 2/16, 8:14 AM CT
Humberto Quintero remains the favorite for the Astros' lead role at catcher, according to the Houston Chronicle. Skipper Cecil Cooper said, "He put himself on pretty solid footing. He is going to probably be one of our two guys. Right now I would have to say his nose is a little ahead of the pack in regard to being the starter. At this point in time, in my mind he would have to basically have a terrible spring, and somebody has to really, really step up and take it away from him. Not to say that he is the lockdown, he is the starter, he is the guy."

Our View: Quintero only looks to hold value in deeper NL-only leagues if he wins the No. 1 role though due to limited hitting skills. J.R. Towles is likely to be the primary backup, but will be pushed by Lou Palmisano and Toby Hall.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSunday 2/8, 8:10 AM CT
Humberto Quintero is the favorite to be the Astros' No. 1 catcher for opening day, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said, "All I can say is, I will work hard every day, and we will see how it turns out. My body is really strong. I will go to spring training feeling 100 percent and try to win my job."

Our View: J.R. Towles, whose anemic batting average disappointed the club last season, is likely to hold the No. 2 spot, but will be pushed by Lou Palmisano and Toby Hall. Quintero only looks to hold value in deeper NL-only leagues.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 1/19, 9:04 PM CT
The Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros and catcher Humberto Quintero avoided arbitration by signing a one-year, $610,000 contract.

Our View: The 29-year-old played in 59 games last season and hit just .226. He will hold down one of the Astros' two catching spots next season, and J.R. Towles will likely take the other. Neither presents a very favorable fantasy option.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 9/15, 3:07 PM CT
Humberto Quintero was forced out of action in the sixth inning of today's game against the Cubs after fouling a pitch off his left knee.

Our View: Brad Ausmus replaced him at catcher. We will keep you posted on Quintero's status.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/22, 7:51 AM CT
Humberto Quintero has been activated from the DL following his recovery from a concussion, according to the Houston Chronicle. J.R. Towles was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock as the corresponding move.

Our View: Quintero held little fantasy value prior to suffering a concussion on July 1, and should not be considered in anything but larger NL-only leagues.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 7/21, 8:50 PM CT
Humberto Quintero could be activated on Tuesday, MLB.com reports. He is on the DL due to a concussion, and he would likely replace J.R. Towles on the roster.

Our View: Towles has done nothing to suggest he belongs in the majors, which is sad. Quintero has very little value, too.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSunday 7/20, 8:10 AM CT
Humberto Quintero, who is trying to bounce back from a concussion, fared well in his first rehab outing on Saturday, as he went 2-for-4 with Double-A Corpus Christi, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: That was the first of three rehab games set for him. He will likely be activated from the DL on Tuesday, and J.R. Towles could be sent back to Triple-A Round Rock at that time. Quintero should resume his role as the starting catcher.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSaturday 7/19, 10:36 AM CT
The Houston Chronicle reports that Humberto Quintero will begin a three-game rehab assignment at Class AA Corpus Christi on Saturday. While on the rehab assignment, he'll start wearing a hockey goalie-style helmet.

Our View: Quintero will likely return to the starting lineup upon his return.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosFriday 7/18, 8:38 AM CT
Humberto Quintero, who is on the DL due to a concussion, will undergo an exam today at Methodist Hospital, according to the Houston Chronicle. Quintero spent the All-Star break working out at Minute Maid Park, and he is optimistic that he has overcome the blow he suffered when he was hit in the head on a backswing by the Dodgers' Luis Maza on July 1. He said, "All is good, and I think my head's even better now than before. It's all good. Since Monday I've been working out on everything. I even blocked balls off the machine in the cage."

Our View: If he is cleared, he will head out for a rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 7/14, 7:52 AM CT
Humberto Quintero, who would be eligible to come off the 15-day DL on Friday, will be examined that day to see if he has overcome the effects of the concussion he suffered back on May 1 when he was hit in the head by the Dodgers' Luis Maza's backswing, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Our View: If Quintero is cleared, he will go on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock, where he'll try on a new mask similar to the hockey goalie-style helmet Brad Ausmus has worn. Due to the head injury, the Astros want Quintero to see if he's ready in a rehab assignment before activating him.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosWednesday 7/2, 7:16 PM CT
Humberto Quintero has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a concussion, according to the AP. The team recalled catcher J.R. Towles from Triple-A Round Rock to take his place on the roster.

Our View: J.R. Towles will likely see most of the action at catcher over Brad Ausmus while Quintero is on the shelf. If Towles performs well, Quintero may become expendable. Quintero only hit .244 over 41 at-bats with the club this season, with no homers and one RBI.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/1, 11:20 PM CT
Updating a previous report, Humberto Quintero is headed for the 15-day DL after suffering a concussion in Tuesday night's battle against the Dodgers, according to the AP. JR Towles is also believed to be coming back to the team to replace him.

Our View: Quintero was taken to a hospital where tests were negative, but the Astros said he would be kept there overnight. He was struck on the top of his catching helmet by Luis Maza's backswing in the second inning.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/1, 8:25 PM CT
Houston catcher Humberto Quintero has left tonight's game versus the Dodgers after being struck in the head with a bat, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Quintero left in the top of the second after a Luis Maza backswing caught the backstop square on top of his catching helmet. The 28-year-old Quintero lay motionless at first and Astros trainers had to help him off the field after several minutes of deliberation.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosTuesday 7/1, 8:07 PM CT
Humberto Quintero left Tuesday's game against the Dodgers after being hit on the top of his head during an at-bat in the second inning, according to the AP. Quintero laid still behind home plate for some time as the Astros' trainer attended to him. He eventually was able to leave the field mostly under his own power with some help from the training staff.

Our View: He was replaced by Brad Ausmus. We will keep you posted on Quintero's status.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosFriday 6/6, 8:38 AM CT
The Astros purchased the contract of catcher Humberto Quintero from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned J.R. Towles to their top affiliate after Thursday's game, this according to the Canadian Press.

Our View: Towles obviously needs to be playing everyday, and currently that place is in Triple-A. Quintero has little fantasy value outside of deep NL-only formats.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/16, 10:19 AM CT
Humberto Quintero feels good to be with the Astros after being called up from Triple-A, according to the Houston Chronicle. He stated, "I feel good physically. But it's been two weeks that I don't play. I played on Saturday and I feel good." He'll likely play Thursday in the series finale against the Phillies.

Our View: His fantasy value remains limited, and JR Towles should be back soon.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosMonday 4/14, 3:55 PM CT
Humberto Quintero has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock due to the injury sustained by JR Towles, according to the Houston Chronicle. Towles was examined on Monday by team doctor David Mehlhoff, who confirmed Sunday’s diagnosis that no bones were broken. But Ed Wade stated, "There is a good chance he’s going to be pretty sore and may be limited for the Philadelphia series." The team is hopeful Towles can play this week.

Our View: He notably enjoyed a solid spring training as he hit .341 over 22 games, and he will serve as the Astros backup at catcher to Brad Ausmus.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosThursday 4/10, 9:05 AM CT
Humberto Quintero has cleared waivers on Wednesday and has accepted his assignment to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the Houston Chronicle. Quintero hit .341 during spring training, but the Astros didn't have the roster space to carry three catchers to start the season. Manager Cooper commented, "It's hard to find catching. This guy has the ability to be a major league catcher and catch at this level. It's hard to find guys like that. I'm glad that he's with us and hopefully, if things don't work out this year, he'll be with us next year and get an opportunity." Quintero could develop into a quality catcher, but will only hold fantasy value if JR Towles or Brad Ausmus get hurt.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosWednesday 4/9, 9:46 AM CT
Humberto Quintero is awaiting his fate, according to the Houston Chronicle. Today marks the 10th day since he was designated for assignment, at which point the Astros had 10 days to trade him, put him on waivers, or release him. The catcher notably had a solid spring training, but the Astros are deep at catcher with JR Towles and Brad Ausmus.
Humberto Quintero, C, Houston AstrosSaturday 3/15, 5:54 PM CT
Humberto Quintero continues to have a strong spring as he went 2-for-3 on Saturday, while driving in two runs. He now has eight RBI and one of his hits went for his first home run. He continues to fight to make the 40-man roster.
