Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 12/13, 12:31 PM CT
Joey Gathright has signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays, according to MLB writer Jordan Bastian's twitter page.

Our View: Gathright will be invited to spring training, and could compete for a role in center field.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 9/30, 9:19 PM CT
Joey Gathright was productive in tonight's 12-0 loss to Toronto at Fenway Park, as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

Our View: Gathright accounted for two of Boston's three hits tonight, with the other being recorded by Rocco Baldelli. Gathrigh started the game in center field to give Jacoby Ellsbury a day off as the Sox gear up for the playoffs.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 9/1, 6:05 PM CT
Joey Gathright has been recalled by the Red Sox from Triple-A Pawtucket, according to TSN.

Our View: He does not look to see much action while merely providing depth in the outfield, and being used as an option as a pinch-runner.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 8/29, 6:31 PM CT
Joey Gathright has been acquired from the Orioles for cash and a player to be named later.

Our View: He will report to Triple-A Pawtucket, and will serve as nothing more than a pinch-runner should he get a September call-up.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/8, 4:24 PM CT
According to the Baltimore Sun, speedy outfielder Joey Gathright has been traded to the Orioles for Ryan Freel. Gathright will be assigned directly to Triple-A Norfolk.

Our View: Gathright has very good speed, but didn't have much of a chance to utilize it this season. He did manage one steal, but was gunned down twice. In just 14 at-bats on the season he collected three hits and spent most of his time on the bench due to a crowded Cubs' outfield. Gathright has little if any fantasy value even if he gets a call-up from the minors.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/8, 9:23 AM CT
Joey Gathright is expected to be sent down to Triple-A Iowa to make room for pitcher Randy Wells on the roster, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Gathright is only hitting 3-for-14 (all singles) over limited action in the Cubs' crowded outfield, and he is viewed as the most expendable. He has one stolen base, but was caught twice.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 3/15, 8:32 PM CT
Joey Gathright was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a strikeout, and three stolen bases in the Cubs 10-7 win over Arizona on Sunday.

Our View: Looking at the spring numbers to date, and Gathright has outperformed Reed Johnson in the battle for centerfield, at least offensively. However, Johnson seems like the more reliable option, but it could end up being a platoon situation, with Gathright seeing the majority of right-handers. If that is the case, Gathright could make a run at 30-40 steals which would make him relevant in most fantasy leagues.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 12/16, 11:44 AM CT
As expected, the Cubs have inked Joey Gathright to a one-year deal, according to MLB.com. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Our View: The left-handed outfielder should fit in well with the Cubs, and his speed should prove to be an asset as they make another run at the playoffs in 2009. He swiped 21 bases over 105 games with the Royals in 2008.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 12/15, 8:11 PM CT
WSCR 670 in Chicago reports that the Cubs will sign outfielder Joey Gathright. He was non-tendered by the Royals.

Our View: Gathright is a speedster who appeared in 105 games last season. He hit .254, scored 41 runs and stole 21 stolen bases.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 12/13, 11:31 AM CT
Outfielder Joey Gathright was not tendered a contract by the Royals and has become a free agent, the Kansas City Star reports.

Our View: Gathright will always be intriguing to fantasy owners due to his speed. He tallied 21 stolen bases with a .254 average this year.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 12/12, 9:49 AM CT
The Denver Post suggests that Joey Gathright could be an option for the Rockies if the Royals opt to non-tender him.

Our View: The Rockies covet a left-handed hitter to complement Ryan Spilborghs in center field, and Gathright fits the bill.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 10/5, 9:10 AM CT
The Boston Globe points out that Joey Gathright had only three doubles in 279 at-bats in 2008.

Our View: Gathright is a slap hitter, but his 2008 season was a bit extreme with a pitiful .272 slugging percentage. Despite his great speed and defense, Gathright could have a tough time sticking around in the majors if he continues to hit so poorly.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/21, 11:50 AM CT
Joey Gathright has been activated from the 15-day DL following his bout with a bruised right shoulder, according to the AP. Mitch Maier has been placed on the 15-day DL as the corresponding move.

Our View: Fantasy owners with Gathright will get speed back to their lineups, as he registered 21 stolen bases this season.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 8/2, 11:55 AM CT
Royals outfielder Joey Gathright started to throw and in a few days he will begin hitting, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: Gathright is a good option for fantasy players needing stolen bases, but only if you can live with that .302 on-base percentage. But if you are in a league that uses slugging percentage, he probably isn't worth the trouble. Among his 62 hits, just three have gone for extra bases.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/24, 4:13 PM CT
Joey Gathright has been placed on the 15-day DL due to a bone bruise in his right shoulder, according to the AP. Outfielder Mitch Maier was called up from Triple-A Omaha as the adjoining move.

Our View: Gathright was merely a serviceable AL-only outfielder as he hit .251 with no homers and 17 RBI over 247 at-bats. He held his most value with 21 stolen bases.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 7/6, 9:20 AM CT
Joey Gathright went 1-for-2 with a walk and a steal on Saturday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Our View: He missed the previous two games due to a sore left shoulder, but is seemingly safe to consider for AL-only league lineups again.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/3, 7:01 PM CT
Joey Gathright, who suffered a left shoulder separation, didn't start in center field tonight against the Orioles. Gathright suffered the injury when he attempted an over-the-fence catch during a 5-2 loss to Baltimore on Wednesday night. David DeJesus was moved from left to center field. Jose Guillen went from designated hitter to left field and Billy Butler served as the teams designated hitter.

Our View: The Royals television network reported that the Royals center fielder could have played, but manager Trey Hillman opted to give him the day off.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 6/9, 12:43 PM CT
Joey Gathright is in the Royals' starting lineup today, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He is back in center field, and batting at the bottom of the order. There was speculation that he may have separated his shoulder on Sunday, but that does not look to be case.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 6/5, 10:19 PM CT
Joey Gathright had a hit, scored a run, and stole his 15th and 16th bases of the year on Thursday night. David DeJesus also stole his fifth base of the year against the White Sox.

Our View: Gathright certainly is getting a chance to show his stuff for the Royals but he is hitting just .250 with a terrible OBP of under .300, limiting him to the bottom of the order. Gathright will continue to steal enough bases to maintain his value, but he has been truly deficient in the other categories.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/18, 12:14 PM CT
Kansas City outfielder Joey Gathright will be out of the starting lineup for the Royals today after suffering an ugly collision with fellow outfielder David DeJesus, according to MLB.com.

Our View: DeJesus was coming from right field as he chased a fly ball from Florida's Mike Jacobs. DeJesus leaped to make the catch only to find Gathright in the path to the ball, meeting in mid-air. Gathright's left shoulder popped out and then back in during the play and is being held out as a precautionary measure. He will be available to play on Sunday, though the team indicates they will re-evaluate. DeJesus reports he is fine and will be in the lineup today.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 5/17, 6:41 PM CT
Joey Gathright is starting in center field on Saturday night with David DeJesus in right. Gathright is leading off as the Royals square off against Florida and left-hander Scott Olsen.

Our View: Gathright is a spark plug from the leadoff spot and leads the Royals in stolen bases.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 5/14, 10:23 PM CT
Light-hitting Joey Gathright accounted for all of the Royals' runs batted in helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 2-0 on Wednesday night. Gathright drove in two runs with a second inning single.

Our View: Gathright who has 10 stolen bases on the season was caught stealing in the game. His third "caught-stealing" of the season.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/2, 3:08 PM CT
Joey Gathright performed well in the lead-off spot on Wednesday as he went 2-for-4, while scoring one run. He started in place of the injured David DeJesus.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/2, 1:15 PM CT
Joey Gathright is expected to start in place of David DeJesus on Wednesday, according to the Sports Network. No news has been given regarding DeJesus's return.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 3/31, 3:52 PM CT
Joey Gathright replaced David DeJesus in the Royals' outfield when he aggravated his ankle ailment and was forced out of action on Monday. Gathright failed to take advantage however, as he went 0-for-4.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/25, 7:49 AM CT
Joey Gathright stepped up against the Dodgers on Monday night after David DeJesus went down with an ankle injury. He blasted three hits for two RBI, and also collected a stolen base. He should be the Royals' top bench outfielder this season.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 3/21, 10:37 AM CT
Joey Gathright had to exit Thursday's game in the ninth inning after feeling tightness in his hamstring, according to MLB.com. Manager Trey Hillman said it was just a precautionary measure. "Just tightened up. That's why I went ahead and ran A.C. out there. I didn't want him to pull," manager Trey Hillman said. "I was glad when he came in [because] I asked him immediately if he pulled and he said, 'No, just tight.' We'll see how he is tomorrow." Gathright isn't in line to start in Kansas City, but he's still worth owning in deeper leagues because of his stolen base potential.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/4, 11:53 PM CT
Joey Gathright went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs, one RBI, and a stolen base in Kansas City’s Cactus League win over the Rockies on Tuesday, a nice performance for a man hoping to earn a job in the starting outfield for the Royals this season.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 3/3, 9:12 PM CT
Joey Gathright stole three bases, scored twice and recorded an RBI in big day for the speedster who is fighting for a starting role in a deep KC outfield. Last month Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Last month, Gathright told a reporter from the AP that he wouldn't be considered the team's fourth outfield had ex-manager Buddy Bell let him run last year. Gathright certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases; in an everyday role the center fielder could likely steal closer to 50.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 2/22, 8:31 PM CT
Joey Gathright feels that if he had stolen 30 bases last year he wouldn't be in a fight for playing time in the Royals OF, this according to a report from the AP. However, Gathright said that former manager Buddy Bell limited his work on the bases last year which precluded him from reaching the 30-SB mark (he had only nine). “In Triple-A, I had nobody telling me when to go and when not to go. When you have the green light, you have control over when you should go. That’s all it is. If you’re not comfortable on first base, you’re not going to be able to steal a base.” Gathright has long been a fine end game grab in AL Only leagues because of that speed, and he certainly has the talent to steal at least 30 bases if given the chance. If he can continue to slap the ball around the field and get on base (.371 OBP last year), Gathright figures to have a long career even if he never receives the playing time he craves.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/30, 11:29 AM CT
Joey Gathright has an eye infection that has forced him to wear glasses instead of contacts lately. "I notice a little bit of a difference," Gathright said in the Kansas City Star. "With contacts, it still can be a little bleary in the outfield. I see everything perfect now in the outfield. The glare doesn’t bother me. At the plate, that’s different. That's the only thing I'm worried about, but I think I will be all right once I get used to it again. I used to play in the minor leagues with glasses. I hit the same with or without them." The numbers would suggest that Gathright is having trouble adjusting to the glasses, as he is three for his last 23 following a 10-for-15 stretch. "Another week of these things (glasses), and then I get rid of them," he said.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/23, 4:40 AM CT
Joey Gathright started in left field and hit leadoff Wednesday, a day after crashing into the stands chasing a foul ball, the AP reports. "I'm good," he said. "Just a little headache." Gathright went 1-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases in Wednesday's victory over Chicago.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 8/16, 9:58 AM CT
Manager Buddy Bell is seriously considering putting Joey Gathright at leadoff to jump-start the Royals struggling offense. "If Joey was better against left-handers, I would probably make the switch," Bell told the Kansas City Star. "And I know he's not going to get better until he plays against them. But it's just too easy to pitch to him late in a game by bringing in a left-hander." Gathright is hitting .339 in several stints in the majors this year, playing almost exclusively against right-handed pitchers.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 8/1, 10:03 AM CT
With Reggie Sanders going down with another injury, minor league outfielder Joey Gathright is expected to be recalled before Wednesday's game in Minnesota, reports the Kansas City Star. Gathright hit .315 with five steals in 25 games earlier this season. He is unlikely to get every day at-bats, but those in need of speed in AL-only formats could do worse.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 6/8, 5:28 AM CT
Joey Gathright has five hits and two stolen bases since being recalled Wednesday. The plan was for Gathright to share time in left field with Emil Brown, but it's going to be difficult for Buddy Bell to take Gathright out of the lineup while he's hot.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 6/7, 9:00 AM CT
Joey Gathright batted ninth in his first game since being recalled from Triple-A on Wednesday, but could find himself at the top of the lineup eventually. “We need something to kick-start us a little bit,” manager Buddy Bell told the Kansas City Star. “Hopefully, Joey can do that. I was kind of toying with putting him at the top of the lineup, but I want to let him settle in a bit before I do that.”
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/6, 11:37 PM CT
Joey Gathright was recalled from Triple-A Omaha Wednesday and went 2-for-3 with a stolen base at Cleveland, batting ninth, the Royals official site reports. Buddy Bell plans to use him in left field, sharing time with Emil Brown. Gathright was hitting .328 in the minors, with 21 stolen bases in 26 attempts. He also had an impressive on-base percentage of .450.
Joey Gathright, CF, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 5/4, 3:17 AM CT
Despite his .462 on-base percentage at Triple-A, Joey Gathright was not recalled when Reggie Sanders went on the disabled list, the Royals official site reports. The club decided to go with Shane Costa instead.
