Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/21, 5:20 PM CT
The Miami Herald reports that the A's have activated first baseman Daric Barton from the 15-day disabled list.

Our View: Barton has recovered from a strained hamstring, but has hit just .147 with a homer and three RBI in 17 games with the A's this season. He replaces Bobby Crosby on the roster, who landed on the DL.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/27, 5:23 PM CT
A's manager Bob Geren said that Daric Barton's strained right hamstring may end up landing him on the DL, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Barton has done little to merit the attention from any fantasy owners the past two seasons. Look for the A's to call up either Tommy Everidge or Travis Buck if Barton does indeed land on the DL.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/27, 10:00 AM CT
MLB.com is reporting that A's first baseman Daric Barton is questionable for Monday's game against the Red Sox due to a strained hamstring. Barton sustained the injury in the fifth inning of Sunday's game while stretching for a ball at first base.

Our View: The injury is believed to be minor, but the A's might keep him out on Monday for precautionary reasons. Barton is lucky he wasn't more severely injured on the play, as he dropped into the splits while stretching for a throw from Orlando Cabrera. He should return at some point this week, and we will keep you updated on his status.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 7/20, 6:36 PM CT
The A's called Daric Barton up from Triple-A on Monday, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Our View: The move was made as a result of Jason Giambi's placement on the DL. Barton has been unimpressive at both Triple-A and Oakland since the start of 2008 and there's no reason to give him a look at this point.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/28, 2:58 PM CT
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Daric Barton has been optioned to Triple-A.

Our View: Barton was moved to make room for Mark Ellis, and the club wants the young hitter to have a chance to play every day. He'll likely get another call later in the season.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 6/9, 8:55 AM CT
A's first baseman Daric Barton is likely to return to Triple-A Sacramento when the A's activate Bobby Crosby off the bereavement list, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Barton was called up on Tuesday to replace the injured Ryan Sweeney.

Our View: Barton, the A's starting first baseman last season, is only hitting .245 in Triple-A this season, and the team is more desperate for depth in the outfield than they are at first. Expect Barton to be sent back down either today or tomorrow, as Crosby is scheduled to return either today or tomorrow. If Barton does stick, don't expect him to hold any fantasy value as a backup.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 6/8, 7:42 PM CT
Daric Barton has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento by Oakland, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Outfielder Ryan Sweeney (knee sprain) was placed on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.

Our View: Barton was only hitting .245 in Triple-A, and is a career .243 hitter in the majors. He is only worth a look for deeper AL-only leagues while providing depth with Oakland.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 3/29, 7:51 AM CT
Daric Barton is considered day-to-day with a return of the quad strain that hindered him earlier in March, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Barton has some pop in his bat, but not enough for a fantasy first baseman. He has been hitting well in spring training, but should be left for deeper AL-only leagues.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 3/22, 8:29 PM CT
Daric Barton went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the spring as Oakland fell to the White Sox 12-10 on Sunday. He played the entire game at first base.

Our View: We would like to see Barton get another shot at being an everyday player this season, but that may not be the case with Jason Giambi and Jack Cust in the mix. He is hitting .391 this spring.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/10, 7:19 AM CT
Daric Barton noted that he hopes to play Friday, according to the SF Chronicle. He is nursing a strained quad.

Our View: Barton should serve as the A's starting first baseman if healthy. He could hit for a decent average, but will leave a bit to be desired in the power department at the position.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/6, 8:02 AM CT
Daric Barton will be out for 4-5 days while recovering from a strained quad, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Barton should serve as the A's starting first baseman if healthy. He could hit for a decent average, but will leave a bit to be desired in the power department at the position.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/4, 6:37 PM CT
Daric Barton played first base and went 2-for-2 with a run scored in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the White Sox. He seems to be fully recovered from his October hip surgery.

Our View: The 23-year-old will get another shot to be the everyday first baseman in Oakland. He was pretty awful last season, but his minor league history is spotless.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/2, 8:40 AM CT
Daric Barton, who is recovering from October hip surgery, may be ready to work in the field as early as Tuesday, according to the SF Chronicle. He went 0-for-2 in his spring debut while serving in the DH role.

Our View: Barton only hit .226 over 446 at-bats last season, and could be limited in 2009 while competing with Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck for playing time.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 2/28, 7:55 AM CT
Daric Barton, who underwent hip surgery last October, was given an at-bat as a pinch hitter in Friday's exhibition game with Milwaukee, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "It went fine. I got out of the box OK. I was a little hesitant, but it came out OK."

Our View: Barton may have a hard time getting at-bats this season, while competing with Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 2/24, 12:09 PM CT
A's first baseman Daric Barton will miss the team's first four or five games in spring training due to his recovery from offseason hip surgery, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Our View: Barton won't play until trainers clear him, and this hurts his chances to find at-bats. He'll have competition in the form of Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and Travis Buck. Barton hit a lowly .226 last season, showing little power, with nine home runs.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 1/26, 11:47 AM CT
First baseman Daric Barton could face long odds to find at-bats in 2009. He had hip surgery in October and his tonsils removed in January, and Barton may be behind entering spring training. He then needs to fight Jason Giambi, Jack Cust, and Travis Buck for playing time. "He'll need to come in and have a nice spring and a good start to the season," manager Bob Geren tells Scout.com.

Our View: Barton, 23, hit only .226 with nine homers in his first full season as a starter. He carried high scouting grades throughout his minor league career, and it seems a little too soon to give up on him. However, Barton seems unlikely to find regular at-bats given that Cust and Giambi are certain to be everyday players. Daric is still worth a look later in AL-only drafts, but that's about it.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 1/13, 5:02 PM CT
Daric Barton is happy that the A's signed Jason Giambi, even though it likely means less playing time for him, according to MLB.com. "I think that's natural (thinking about his potential loss of playing time)," Barton conceded. "But I wasn't negative about anything. Did I think about my situation? Yeah. But at the same time, I can understand what [the A's are] doing. I mean, I look back at my year and I don't think bringing Jason in is a bad thing at all. As far as the team goes, in the lineup and in the clubhouse, it can't be anything but good for all of us."

Our View: Given Barton's struggles thus far, you can hardly blame the A's for bringing Giambi back. Daric is still just 23, so he'll likely get another shot to be a regular at some point, but it's uncertain if he'll ever develop enough power to be useful in fantasy.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 11/26, 3:18 PM CT
The Washington Post reports that the Athletics don't seem willing to part with Daric Barton.

Our View: The Nationals may ask for Barton if the Athletics pursue a trade for Nick Johnson.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 10/28, 8:19 PM CT
On Tuesday, the A's announced that Daric Barton underwent successful surgery on his right hip, according to the A's official web site.

Our View: Barton had a terrible year at the plate in his first full season. The converted first baseman only hit .226 with nine home runs.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/25, 11:00 AM CT
A's first baseman Daric Barton is thinking about playing winter ball in Mexico, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'll go early or not at all," he said.

Our View: Barton has had a putrid year, hitting .218 and disappointing his team and fantasy owners alike. He has just 29 extra-base hits in 435 at-bats, leading to a paltry .338 slugging percentage.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 9/21, 9:04 AM CT
Daric Barton played third base on Saturday, and he did not enjoy the experience, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "Not comfortable at all," Barton said.

Our View: Barton continues to be a disappointment for fantasy owners, despite knocking in the winning run on Saturday.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 9/16, 9:44 AM CT
A's first baseman Daric Barton ran his hitless streak to 19 at-bats on Monday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The streak is a career-high for him.

Our View: Barton has been one of the single most disappointing players in all of fantasy baseball. Touted as a contact hitter who will develop power, Barton has a lowly .213 batting average and nine home runs.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 9/4, 8:10 PM CT
Daric Barton was 2-for-4 with a home run in Oakland's loss against the Royals Thursday night.

Our View: Let's hope Barton plays up to his potential next season cause this year has been a waste.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 9/2, 10:33 PM CT
A's first baseman Daric Barton was one of the few successful Oakland hitters, going 3-for-3 with two RBI in the team's 5-2 loss to Kansas City.

Our View: Barton has been a miserable acquisition for fantasy owners who wasted a draft pick on the much-hyped prospect. Maybe he'll turn it around, but this has been a season to forget.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 8/25, 11:37 PM CT
Daric Barton homered in his only hit in three at-bats to help lead the A's to a 2-1 win over the Angels on Monday.

Our View: Barton now has a four game hitting streak (for Barton, that qualifies as a streak) and has home runs in two of those games. He remains an enormous disappointment, however.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 8/24, 5:52 PM CT
Daric Barton went 2-for-4 with a double, but it was not enough to help the A's, as they were downed by the Mariners 8-4.

Our View: Barton has easily been one of the most disappointing players in fantasy baseball. Lauded for his ability to get on base, he hasn't even done that well, with an OBP of .305 coming into Saturday's game.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/7, 9:20 PM CT
Daric Barton hit his fifth home run of the season, and second if five days in Oakland's loss to Toronto. He wound up going 1-for-3 in the contest.

Our View: Barton has been a great disappointment for fantasy players this year in every way, and despite tonight's hit, he is only batting .120 in the month of August.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 8/3, 6:42 PM CT
Daric Barton went deep for only the fourth time this season on Sunday in the A's 5-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Our View: Barton is only hitting .218 on the year, but the team still seems to be committed to him. With Frank Thomas back at DH and Jack Cust in left field, the team can afford to bat Barton at the bottom of the order and hope that he continues to improve.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 8/1, 6:08 PM CT
Daric Barton was activated from the DL on Friday after being sidelined due to a stiff neck that he picked up when he dove into a pool that was too shallow, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Barton has been a big disappointment this season limping along with a .224 average and scarcely any power (a mere 15 extra base hits in 277 AB). He doesn't warrant any attention in mixed leagues though he will likely return to being the teams starter at first base.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 7/29, 10:11 AM CT
Daric Barton is eligible to come off the DL today but continues to be plagued by neck stiffness, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He is likely to remain with Triple-A Sacramento on his rehab assignment for several more days.

Our View: It's not as if Barton was ripping the cover off the ball before his injury, so the A's won't rush him back. However, Wes Bankston and Jack Hannahan have offered no improvement.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 7/23, 7:01 AM CT
Daric Barton will have the six staples removed from his head today, and then will go to Albuquerque to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Barton has struggled with a .224 average with Oakland, so some at-bats in the minors could benefit him before he returns to the team.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 7/19, 11:46 AM CT
Daric Barton has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 14, with a neck strain.

Our View: Barton should come back once he is eligible, but this is a good opportunity for Wes Bankston or Jack Hannahan to show they belong in the everyday lineup.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 6/26, 5:57 PM CT
Daric Barton has not had a good season for Oakland, and he continued to struggle with an 0-for-4 performance Thursday. He is now hitting just .222 on the year.

Our View: Many fantasy owners expected big things from Barton when the season began, but he has been a huge disappointment so far. He is mired in a 3-for-26 slump, and isn't hitting for any power, with only three home runs on the season.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/25, 11:55 AM CT
Daric Barton returned to the lineup Tuesday against Philadelphia after missing two games with a hamstring strain, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He hit ninth and struck out three times in three at-bats.

Our View: After a stellar 2007 campaign, Barton has not hit well so far this season. Tuesday's 0-for-3 put him at .224 on the year with three home runs and 22 RBI.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSunday 6/22, 9:46 PM CT
Daric Barton is being listed as day to day due to a sore hamstring, according to MLB.com. Jack Hannahan filled in for Barton on Sunday.

Our View: The team hopes to have Barton back for their game with the Phillies on Tuesday, though it's not yet clear if that is wishful thinking or an honest assessment of his status.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 5/16, 11:23 AM CT
If Mark Ellis' hamstring injury forces him to miss the entire series in Atlanta this weekend, manager Bob Geren said that Daric Barton could be used some at third base, according to MLB.com. Barton played 18 games at third base for Triple-A Sacramento last season and made nine errors.

Our View: This could potentially give Barton some positional flexibility in some leagues, but his value is pretty minimal right now since he's barely hitting his weight.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/19, 6:38 PM CT
Daric Barton had three hits with two runs scored and an RBI on Saturday for the A's.

Our View: Barton struck out twice on the day and now has 19 K in 19 games on the year. He is still working the count with 15 BB, but he has struggled to put the bat on the ball more than most assumed he would. Still, he's hitting .271 with an OBP of around .400 so he is doing fine.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 4/5, 7:06 PM CT
Daric Barton had his first three hit game of the young season on Saturday as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Barton appears to be a safe average play this season, and with his ability to work the count he should remain in the lineup even while struggling. However, if you have him on your roster you had better look for your power elsewhere as he has yet to develop a power bat.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 4/1, 7:17 AM CT
Daric Barton has been nursing a sore wrist but is expected to play in the A's season opener on Tuesday, according to the SF Chronicle. He has notably reached base in all 20 big-league games in which he has appeared. He has 25 hits and drew 14 walks.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 3/31, 9:11 AM CT
Daric Barton is nursing a sore wrist that forced him to miss two consecutive spring training games, but he is expected to be ready to play in Tuesday's home opener, according to the SF Chronicle. Barton will be the starting 1B.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsSaturday 3/15, 8:12 PM CT
Daric Barton went 0-for-4 against the Giants on Saturday. He recently returned from a hand ailment and only has four spring hits over 25 at-bats.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsTuesday 3/11, 1:19 PM CT
Daric Barton returned to the lineup on Monday and his injured hand seemed fine as he blasted a three run home run. This according to the SF Chronicle. That was his first hit of the spring and a great sign he is healthy, as he is not known as a power hitter.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsFriday 3/7, 11:53 PM CT
According to the A's team website, Daric Barton's injured left hand was examined by a local orthopedic specialist on Thursday and the ailment was believed to be serious. A day later Oakland manager Bob Geren reported Barton's hand is probably not as serious as first thought. "He went to a doctor yesterday, and he's day-to-day," Geren said. "He's not hitting today, but hopefully he'll be hitting in a couple of days. If he's day-to-day, he's all right. I'm not concerned." Barton missed his sixth consecutive game on Friday and is not projected to be back in the lineup again this weekend.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 3/6, 4:28 PM CT
The hand injury suffered by Daric Barton may be worse than originally reported, this according to a report on MLB.com. Barton was sent to see a specialist on Thursday when a myriad of tests will be run to learn the extent of the injury after he missed his fifth straight game. The injury was thought to be a minor tweak that would keep him out for a few days, but things have taken a much more serious tone over the past 24 hours. The A's may find themselves happy to have brought in Mike Sweeney and to have kept Dan Johnson around if this injury turns out to be serious.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/5, 8:36 PM CT
Following an earlier story, Daric Barton has missed the A's last four spring training games due to soreness on the side of his left hand, according to MLB.com. Barton states the injury is due to repitition from taking too many swings with the bat so early in the season. He fielded ground balls with the team before Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Padres but was not included in the starting lineup. The team hopes to get him back in action as early as Thursday when the A's play the Cubs at home, but that may be optimistic.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 3/5, 3:55 PM CT
Daric Barton will miss a fifth straight game on Wednesday due to a sore left wrist. He hopes to return Thursday. "He kind of wants to get back in there, but we want to make sure it's completely healed before he goes back out there," manager Bob Geren tells MLB.com.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsMonday 9/10, 11:51 PM CT
The A’s called up first baseman Daric Barton from Triple-A Sacramento Monday. The team is expected to play Barton nearly every day to see if he is ready to join the team to start the 2008 season. "Not all September call-ups are the same. This is a real good test for him," A’s manager Bob Geren told the Associated Press.

Our View: Barton is the top prospect in the A’s organization, so fantasy owners would be wise to keep an eye on his tryout over the next few weeks. He could be the team’s opening day first baseman in 2008.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsWednesday 6/27, 11:08 AM CT
Daric Barton has been ripping the cover off the ball at Triple-A Sacramento. The A's prospect entered Tuesday's game hitting a robust .675 during a 20-game hitting streak. GM Billy Beane said the A's won't bring the left-handed-hitting Barton to the majors to have him sit on the bench, but he's been impressed with how the youngster is progressing, according to the Mercury News.
Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland AthleticsThursday 8/17, 1:19 PM CT
Daric Barton, who suffered a broken elbow almost three months ago at Triple-A Sacramento, played first base for the Rookie League Arizona Athletics, according to the A's website. He went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
