Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 3/19, 2:50 PM CT
Paul Maholm threw four solid innings against the Red Sox on Friday, allowing one earned run while striking out two. He did allow two unearned runs, however.

Our View: His spring ERA is now a tidy 2.70, and he should be a good rotation filler in all NL-only leagues this season.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 3/13, 5:26 PM CT
Paul Maholm only issued one hit over three scoreless innings in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Boston in the Grapefruit League. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: Maholm is a better pitcher than his 8-9 record of 2009 would suggest, and could prove to be a quality option for NL-only leagues this season.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 3/13, 3:53 PM CT
Paul Maholm struck out three in three scoreless innings of spring work against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Our View: His spring ERA now rests at 3.00. He is only worth a look in NL-only leagues.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 2/19, 10:52 AM CT
The Pirates are considering opening the season with a four-man starting rotation, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: The Pirates have three days off mixed between there first 12 games, which could make such a decision possible. If Pittsburgh does opt to go with a four-man rotation, guys like Paul Maholm, Zach Duke and Ross Ohlendorf would be in line to start every fifth day. Charlie Morton would likely serve as the No. 4 starter, with No. 5 candidates Kevin Hart and Daniel McCutchen starting out in the minors.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 9/26, 9:41 PM CT
Paul Maholm deserved better than a no-decision on Saturday against the Dodgers. He allowed just three runs on seven hits and three walks over seven innings, but his bullpen imploded in the 8-4 loss.

Our View: Maholm has been very good over his last three outings, allowing just five earned runs over a stretch of 21 innings. Unfortunately he's just 1-1 in that span, but such is life when pitching for the Pirates.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 9/20, 3:29 PM CT
Paul Maholm turned in a quality outing on Sunday, allowing just three runs (only two earned) in six innings pitched, but still fell to 8-9 on the season as Pittsburgh lost 4-0 to the Padres.

Our View: Maholm had been inconsistent of late, but has now turned in two straight quality starts after two very shaky ones.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 9/13, 4:48 PM CT
Paul Maholm held the Astros in check on Sunday with eight shutout innings, and evened his record at 8-8 with a 2-1 win.

Our View: Maholm allowed just six hits and two walks in the outing and it was his best start since July 17th when he went eight innings and didn't allow an earned run while striking out seven against the Giants. Sunday's effort dropped his ERA to 4.51.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 9/6, 4:38 PM CT
Paul Maholm managed to strike out seven Cardinals while allowing four runs in six innings on Sunday, taking a no-decision in the Pirates' 6-5 win.

Our View: Maholm's ERA now rests at 4.72. He doesn't figure to turn in too many quality starts in the season's final weeks.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 8/31, 9:35 PM CT
Paul Maholm was tagged for four earned runs on nine hits over five innings in Monday's 6-3 loss at Cincinnati in the nightcap of their doubleheader. He had three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Maholm struggled on the hill tonight, and now has a losing record at 7-8. He allowed four or more earned runs in four of his six starts in August.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 8/26, 9:13 PM CT
Paul Maholm afforded the Phillies' powerful lineup just one run in seven innings on Wednesday, but as usual for Pirates starters, it wasn't enough, as the Bucs could get nothing going offensively in a 4-1 ten-inning loss.

Our View: Tonight was Maholm's second straight seven inning, one run performance, and he could be someone to look at down the stretch in mixed leagues if he continues to pitch well.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 8/19, 9:22 PM CT
Paul Maholm picked up his seventh win of the season on Wednesday as the Pirates downed the Brewers 3-1. Maholm went 7.2 innings and allowed one run on eight hits while walking two and striking out five.

Our View: Maholm seems to be feast or famine these days, as he got pounded in his last start by the Rockies but was very good tonight. He is a risky fantasy play, especially playing for the Pirates, but he can still put together outings like this.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 8/13, 5:09 PM CT
Paul Maholm got tagged for 11 hits and six runs in six innings on Thursday, as the Pirates got crushed 10-1 in Denver.

Our View: Maholm's ERA is now nearly 5.00, while his WHIP is an ugly 1.45. You can probably do better in NL-only leagues.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 8/7, 8:47 PM CT
Paul Maholm pitched seven so-so innings on Friday against the Cardinals, allowing four runs on two home runs while striking out four. He took a no-decision as the Pirates lost 6-4.

Our View: Maholm's ERA continues to hover near 5.00, and he's not much of an option beyond spot-starter in mixed leagues.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 8/2, 3:42 PM CT
Paul Maholm was his mediocre self against Washington on Sunday, giving up four runs off seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Our View: Maholm's 6-6 record pretty much exemplifies how average he's been this season, currently sporting a 4.75 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. It's tough to consider him a fantasy option at this point given his tendency to get roughed around when he doesn't have his very best stuff.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 7/27, 11:38 PM CT
Paul Maholm was tagged for four earned runs on eight hits over six innings in Monday's 4-2 loss at San Francisco. He had one walk and three strikeouts.

Our View: Maholm took a loss, and falls to 6-5 for the season. He has gone three straight starts without a win, and remains an erratic fantasy hurler.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 7/22, 3:04 PM CT
Paul Maholm got destroyed by a potent Brewers' lineup on Wednesday, but managed to avoid the loss. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks over just 4.2 inning, but the Bucco bats bailed him out with an 8-7 walk-off win.

Our View: Maholm has been an enigma this season. When he's on he's great, but when he's off he's miserable. Eleven of his 20 starts he has allowed two runs or less. In seven of his remaining nine starts he has allowed five runs or more (including at least seven four times). If you start him, just hope you get the Dr. Jekyl version.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 7/18, 1:12 AM CT
Paul Maholm was outstanding on Friday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Pirates beat the Giants 2-1 in 14 innings. Maholm went eight innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven and not walking a batter.

Our View: It was a good ol' fashioned pitchers' duel between Maholm and Lincecum, and neither factored into the decision. Maholm looked more like he did early in the season tonight, and hopefully he can keep it going.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 7/7, 10:42 PM CT
Paul Maholm gave the Pirates a quality start on Tuesday night, and they gave him a win in return, beating the Astros 6-3 in Houston.

Our View: Maholm hasn't been awful in 2009, he provides quality starts every once in a while, but isn't nearly consistent enough to warrant consideration for your team.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 7/2, 4:44 PM CT
Paul Maholm was lit up for six earned runs on 11 hits over a mere 4.1 innings of work in Thursday's 9-8 loss to the Mets at PNC Park. He had one walk and one strikeout. The game went 10 innings.

Our View: Maholm should be happy he takes a no-decision rather than a loss in his nightmarish outing. He has given up four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts, and will be an unstable fantasy option for his next trip to the hill.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 6/27, 10:03 PM CT
Paul Maholm improved to 5-4 with a nice night against Kansas City on Saturday, giving up two runs off five hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings.

Our View: Maholm can be quite effective at times and has potential to be a decent fantasy starter, but he's simply been too inconsistent this season to trust, having surrendered seven or more runs on three occasions.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 6/21, 6:21 PM CT
Paul Maholm was lit up for five earned runs on eight hits over five innings in Sunday's 5-4 loss at Colorado. He had four walks and seven strikeouts, and gave up a solo homer to Clint Barmes.

Our View: Maholm falls to 4-4 for the season, and is winless over his last three starts. He has a 6.38 ERA over four outings this month, and should only be considered for deeper leagues for his next turn in the Pirates' rotation.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 6/16, 10:25 PM CT
Paul Maholm got rocked by the Twins on Tuesday night, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits in only five innings as the Pirates fell 8-2.

Our View: Maholm remains the prototypical spotty fantasy spot starter. He is just as capable of going seven innings and giving up two runs as he is to go four and give up eight. Start him at your own risk.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 6/11, 3:30 PM CT
Paul Maholm took a hard luck no decision in the Pirates 3-1 victory over the Braves on Thursday. The lefty hurler allowed only one unearned run in seven innings while striking out eight. He is 4-2 on the season.

Our View: Maholm continues to pitch solidly for the Pirates, with Thursday being his fourth quality start in his last six outings. He is still prone to some bad games, but has established himself as a viable fantasy option.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 6/6, 9:21 PM CT
Paul Maholm picked up his fourth win of the season on Saturday as the Pirates defeated the Astros 6-4. Maholm went seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

Our View: Maholm has been solid this season, and he found a way to win tonight even though he didn't have his best stuff. His K/9 ratio isn't great, but his ERA of 3.94 is respectable. He should be owned in all NL-only leagues, and mixed league owners should give him a look as well.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 5/31, 4:21 PM CT
Paul Maholm had a fine showing against Houston on Sunday despite getting tagged with the loss, giving up one earned run (two total) off eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Our View: Maholm has been mostly effective this season and is a fine middle-to-backend NL-only starter. Still, with his inability to strike out opposing batters, he tends to get hit hard when he's not at the top of his game, meaning he could continue to be a borderline mixed league starter throughout the season.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 5/25, 10:59 PM CT
Paul Maholm struggled against a struggling Cubs offense in Monday's 10-8 win. The Pirates ace allowed seven runs in four innings and did not factor in the decision. He gave up seven hits and three walks, while striking out two.

Our View: Maholm was excellent in his last two starts when he allowed only one run in 13 innings. He is a respectable fantasy starter, but he has shown some serious signs of inconsistency in 2009.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 5/20, 9:29 PM CT
Paul Maholm was outstanding again on Wednesday, but he did not factor into the decision in the Pirates' 2-1 win over the Nationals. Maholm went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits while walking three and striking out seven.

Our View: Maholm looks to be back on track with two straight good starts. He has been very good this season, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. Keep him in the rotation in all leagues at this point, and expect him to continue his solid play.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 5/15, 9:22 PM CT
Paul Maholm got back on track on Friday, but his closer could not deliver him his fourth win of the season. Maholm went seven innings and did not allow a run while walking one and striking out four.

Our View: After getting rocked in his last start, Maholm rebounded well tonight. He has been very good this season minus that one start, so it was no surprise that he pitched well tonight. Keep him in the rotation in all leagues unless he starts to completely fall apart.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 5/9, 3:14 PM CT
Paul Maholm was rocked for seven earned runs on 10 hits over five innings in Saturday's 10-1 loss at the Mets. He had one walk with two strikeouts.

Our View: This marks his worst outing of the season, and he was dealt his first loss as he falls to 3-1 over seven starts. He managed to fare better at the plate, as he hit a solo home run.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 5/4, 11:35 PM CT
Paul Maholm returned to form on Monday, but his bullpen could not deliver him a win. Maholm went 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Our View: Maholm had been rough as of late, but he was very good tonight. Owners shouldn't be very happy with the Bucs' bullpen, but be happy that Maholm looked like he did early in the season tonight.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 4/28, 11:58 PM CT
Paul Maholm got roughed up on Tuesday night at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed five runs on seven hits and a messy five walks over just 5.1 innings in the Pirates 6-5 loss.

Our View: Maholm was brilliant to start the season, but his last two starts have been rough. His ERA jumped over a full run after Tuesday's performance, and the Pirates ace is not throwing his best stuff right now. He'll need a return to form if the Bucs are going to continue to surprise everyone in the NL Central.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 4/22, 2:44 PM CT
Paul Maholm allowed four earned runs on eight hits over six innings of work in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Marlins at PNC Park. He fired four strikeouts with one walk.

Our View: Maholm did not have a strong outing, but his teammates provided enough offensive support for him to improve to 3-0 on the season. Matt Capps preserved the win while claiming his fifth save.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 4/17, 9:07 PM CT
Paul Maholm dazzled the Braves on Friday, holding them scoreless over seven innings and improving to 2-0. The southpaw allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out two.

Our View: Maholm has been nothing short of brilliant through three starts, and his ERA is down to 0.87. Fantasy owners tend not to love him because of a lack of strikeouts, but it's tough to downplay his outstanding work thus far.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 4/11, 3:16 PM CT
Paul Maholm had his second straight terrific start Saturday, holding the Reds to one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings.

Our View: Maholm had a nice 2008 season, but he could be in line for a true breakout in 2009 under new pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 4/6, 6:43 PM CT
Paul Maholm scattered seven hits and a walk while allowing one earned run and striking out a batter in Pittsburgh's 6-4 win over the Cardinals on Monday. He threw 89 pitches before being lifted with two outs in the seventh.

Our View: Maholm is good for a quality start more often than not, but he's often overlooked due to his jersey. He displays good control and can generate double play balls with regularity. His upside is limited as the Pirates don't figure to win very often this season, but he should make for a solid fantasy option.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 4/6, 8:37 AM CT
Paul Maholm admitted that he expects "butterflies" when he takes the hill for today's season opener against the Cardinals, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He said, "I am sure there are going to be butterflies, some nervousness. One, you want to get off to a good start. Another, it is opening day. It is the first game that means something. That is where the honor comes in of John Russell and everybody sending me out there first. I hope to set the tone. I hope to go out there and do what I did last year, or do better."

Our View: Maholm held a 1.28 WHIP over 31 starts in 2008, and is coming off a strong spring with a 1.48 ERA. He will have a tough assignment against Albert Pujols and a potent Cardinals' offense, but the Pirates' ace should be penciled into fantasy lineups.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 3/21, 4:44 PM CT
Paul Maholm had another brilliant start on Saturday, allowing only three hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out four and lowered his preseason ERA to a minuscule 0.46.

Our View: Maholm might be a big sleeper this year. He has had arguably one of the best springs of any pitcher so far and is racking up the Ks. You can grab him late as a fourth of fifth starter, but may turn out to be your number two.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 3/16, 9:55 PM CT
Paul Maholm allowed one run on two hits and one walk in 4.2 innings of work as the Pirates fell to the Rays 6-4 on Monday.

Our View: Maholm will lead the charge for the Pirates' rotation this season, but he is not much more than a fourth starter in most fantasy leagues. He has had a strong play and should provide good value given his likely late draft spot.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 3/11, 4:53 PM CT
Paul Maholm threw four shutout innings Wednesday, allowing only three hits and striking out two.

Our View: The de facto ace for the Pirates looks tip top this spring. He'll drop in your draft due to lack of wins (which comes along with being a Pirate), but could be a mid to late-round steal as he is valuable in other fantasy categories.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 3/11, 8:48 AM CT
Paul Maholm will start today's game against the Blue Jays, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Our View: Maholm is the No. 1 pitcher of the Pirates' rotation, and has fared well so far in spring training. He should be a quality fantasy pitcher, and may slip in fantasy drafts since he plays for a weak team.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 2/28, 3:23 PM CT
Paul Maholm had a solid outing in Saturday's win over the Astros. He fired two hitless innings, with two strikeouts.

Our View: Maholm worked 206.1 innings in 2008, while maintaining a 1.28 WHIP. He looks to be a nice pick as a No. 5 fantasy hurler.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 1/30, 12:17 PM CT
Paul Maholm has inked his three-year extension with the Pirates, which is worth $14.5 million, according to the Associated Press. The contract also includes a club option for 2012.

Our View: Maholm only went 9-9 last season, but pitched 206.1 innings, while maintaining a 1.28 WHIP. The 26-year-old lefty is worth a look in mixed leagues for 2009.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 1/29, 7:44 AM CT
Paul Maholm has agreed on a multiyear extension with the Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The deal is for three years with an option for a fourth, but financial details are yet to be disclosed.

Our View: Maholm only went 9-9 last season, but pitched 206.1 innings, while maintaining a 1.28 WHIP. He is worthy of an extension, and a look in mixed leagues for 2009.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 1/24, 11:00 AM CT
Paul Maholm and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in negotiations over a long-term contract, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Our View: The two sides are apparently not all that far apart. Maholm could be a solid addition to fantasy owners this year. He provided good numbers in 2008 with a 1.28 WHIP and 3.71 ERA, but he won just nine games, hurting his value.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 12/22, 9:22 AM CT
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates and pitcher Paul Maholm are negotiating an extension.

Our View: Maholm was the Pirates bext pitcher last season when he posted a 3.71 ERA in 206.1 innings. He had 139 strikeouts and a 9-9 record.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 12/16, 9:14 AM CT
The Braves have inquired about the Pirates' Paul Maholm, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Our View: The Braves could potentially offer the Pirates Kelly Johnson or Yunel Escobar if they acquire Rafael Furcal. Maholm held a 1.28 WHIP with the Pirates last season and would be a favorable acquisition to the Braves' rotation. The Pirates could use infielding help to potentially replace Jack Wilson and/or Freddy Sanchez.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 10/21, 12:03 AM CT
The Pirates hired Jim Kerrigan as their new pitching coach on Monday, the AP reports.

Our View: Kerrigan seems like a solid choice. He has been a pitching coach for the Expos, Phillies and Red Sox, and he has also served as a bullpen coach for the Yankees. Let's hope he can work some magic with guys like Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny, and Zach Duke.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 9/18, 3:46 PM CT
Paul Maholm allowed three earned runs on three hits over seven innings in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Dodgers at PNC Park, with six walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: He exited the game in a 3-3 tie, and was dealt a no decision. Maholm is only 9-8 over 30 starts, but has been solid as he allowed two or less earned runs in eight of his last 11 outings.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 9/6, 11:20 PM CT
Paul Maholm rebounded from one of his worst starts of the season but his bullpen blew the win for him. On Saturday against the Giants, Maholm threw six innings of one-run ball only to watch his bullpen surrender five runs in the seventh.

Our View: Maholm's ERA is down to 3.74 after his 28th start and he has certainly pitched better than his 8-8 record would indicate.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 8/20, 11:44 PM CT
Paul Maholm will not be shut down by the Pirates for the remainder of the year to save his arm, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Maholm is nearing his career high in innings pitched, which was 177.2 last season. He is currently at 168.

Our View: Fantasy owners of Maholm are glad to hear this news. He is a bit of an underrated performer, with a 3.64 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. His eight wins are not inspiring, but he could have more if the Pirates scored more runs for him.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 8/18, 2:47 PM CT
Paul Maholm only surrendered two earned runs on five hits over seven innings in Monday's 5-2 win over the Mets, with three walks and four strikeouts. He exited the game in a 2-2 tie, giving him a no-decision.

Our View: Maholm is 1-0 over his last three starts, allowing two or less earned runs in all three outings. He is worth employing in NL-only leagues while he is pitching well.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 8/18, 10:11 AM CT
Paul Maholm's two run victory over the Reds on Wednesday came on the heels of a career-high 10 strikeout performance against the Phillies. The Pirates lefty is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three starts against the Mets, the Pirates opponent in the early Monday MLB affair.

Our View: In his third full season, Maholm's maturation process is peaking. His 6.4 K rate and 2.4 BB rate are overwhelmingly good for a left-hander that makes a living with his sinking fastball (52% groundball percentage). His numbers have improved each month of the season. The southpaw has a 2.70 ERA, 7.7 K rate and a 2.0 BB rate since the first week of July. The Mets have hit only 29 home runs this year against left-handed starters, 22nd in the league. Against a sinker-baller like Maholm this afternoon, runs will be hard to come by.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesWednesday 8/13, 8:28 PM CT
Pirates hurler Paul Maholm won his eighth game of the season by throwing eight innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out five in the team's 5-2 win over Cincinnati.

Our View: Four out of Maholm's last five starts have been dazzling. He has a 2.25 ERA during that time, and if you take out the one start where he gave up five earned runs, his ERA is 1.20. He is certainly an option for mixed fantasy leagues.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 8/8, 10:57 PM CT
Paul Maholm matched Joe Blanton on Friday night by pitching seven shutout innings in a no decision against the Phillies.

Our View: Don;t look now, but Maholm appears to be a pitcher after all. Maholm had 10 K on the night, he had nine two starts ago, and has a posted a 2.83 ERA over his last 10 starts, even though he has picked up just three wins for the pathetic Pirates in that time.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 8/2, 2:48 PM CT
Paul Maholm saw his record go to 7-7 as he took the loss in the Pirates 5-1 loss to Chicago. Maholm threw six innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits.

Our View: Maholm really has had only one bad month, and that was May. Otherwise, his numbers were solid. However, with the way Pittsburgh purged their team of good players, it isn't likely he will maintain what he had been doing.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 7/27, 4:27 PM CT
Paul Maholm went seven innings of one-hit ball while striking out nine Padres on Sunday, though he was outdueled by Jake Peavy. In July he has a 2.43 ERA, 31 strikeouts and six walks in 37 innings.

Our View: Maholm has just one loss in 11 home starts this season. If you throw out a poor May, he actually has ace-like numbers. However, this is the same pitcher that had a 5.02 ERA in 29 starts last season. It's hard to imagine him keeping his ERA down this low (3.79) the rest of the way.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 7/22, 9:56 PM CT
Paul Maholm was back at it on Tuesday in Houston. He allowed just five hits and one run over eight innings. It was the fifth game this season that he has gone at least eight innings.

Our View: Maholm is showing he can get the job done. He is 7-6 with an ERA of 3.92.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 7/17, 11:33 PM CT
Paul Maholm struck out seven in six innings for the Pirates but gabe up five runs in the loss on Thursday.

Our View: Maholm is 5-1 with a 3.33 ERA at home but is just 1-4 with a 4.81 ERA on the road.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 7/10, 9:23 PM CT
Pittsburgh lefty Paul Maholm earned his sixth win of the season tonight, helping his Pirates to a 4-2 win over the Yankees. Maholm pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Our View: Maholm had suffered no-decision results in four of his last five outings but now boasts four consecutive wins in games resulting in decisions.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 7/10, 2:23 PM CT
Paul Maholm will get the start tonight as the Pirates take on the Yankees, making up a previously rained out game. Over his last three outings, Maholm has thrown 22 innings and given up just six earned runs.

Our View: Maholm gave up three runs a few starts ago, then two runs, and in his last start he allowed just one run. So if he holds true to form, he should allow no runs tonight. Okay, so that may be wishful thinking, but Maholm's 4.05 ERA and 1.31 WHIP make him a decent option in fantasy leagues, especially NL-only leagues.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSaturday 7/5, 8:43 PM CT
Paul Maholm pitched eight excellent innings on Saturday though he picked up a no-decision after engaging in a pitching battle with David Bush. Both pitchers went eight innings and allowed just a single run, with Maholm walking one and striking out six.

Our View: Maholm continues to bring his ERA down with his fourth straight quality start for the Pirates (4.05). He still comes with some risk as he doesn't have a true "out pitch", but he is on a solid roll right now.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 6/15, 3:12 PM CT
Paul Maholm allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out four over six innings on Sunday afternoon. Maholm handed the ball to John Grabow with a 4-2 lead and was in line to even his record to 5-5 when he departed.

Our View: Maholm has been up and down in the first two months of the season. His K Rate is under six and his BB Rate is far too high (2.40) in relation. The left-hander allows over 10 hits per nine innings and the combination of the three make him a suspect starter in anything but AL-only formats.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesTuesday 6/10, 9:14 PM CT
Pittsburgh LHP Paul Maholm escaped tonight's 7-2 trouncing from Washington with no decision, lasting 6 2/3 innings to allow four runs (all earned) on 10 hits with no walks, four strikeouts, and a whopping four home runs allowed.

Our View: Maholm has now allowed seven homers over his last five starts.
Paul Maholm, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 6/5, 9:14 PM CT
Paul Maholm pitched eight solid innings for the Pirates allowing three runs, two earned, in his fourth win of the season.

Our View: Maholm struck out only one batter in the game, though he didn't walk a batter. He continues to be one of those up and down types that can look good one night and hideous the next. Tread carefully.
