Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 8/11, 6:18 PM CT
Longtime fireman Tom "Flash" Gordon has been released by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Our View: Flash just wasn't Flash anymore. He has a 5.29 ERA since the beginning of the 2007, and at 42 years old, just can't get batters out anymore. It's been a great career, but we've likely seen the last of it.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 7/28, 10:50 AM CT
Tom Gordon had a disappointing rehab outing for Triple-A Reno on Sunday, allowing three earned runs in just a third of an inning, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: "Flash" has been more like "Walk Very Slowly" during his rehab assignment, walking ten batters and allowing nine earned runs in just 4.1 innings. It might be time to hang them up.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/25, 8:45 PM CT
According to MLBlogs.com, Tom Gordon threw a scoreless inning in a Triple-A rehab appearance on Friday.

Our View: Gordon tossed 13 pitches (eight for strikes) and felt good afterward. He's scheduled to throw again on Sunday, and barring any setbacks, he'll rejoin the team next week.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/23, 9:44 AM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, injured reliever Tom Gordon had another shaky rehab outing on Tuesday.

Our View: Gordon has now allowed six earned runs and walked eight over just three innings during his rehab stint. He's struggling desperately with his command and doesn't look like he'll be rejoining the D-Backs any time soon. At some point you have to start wondering if this is an "injury thing" or a "just can't get it done anymore thing".
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 7/10, 11:49 AM CT
Tom Gordon will throw another live batting practice session on Friday, and likely head out on a minor league rehab assignment next week, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Gordon hasn't really pitched effectively since 2006 when he was with Philadelphia, but could be a darkhorse candidate to pick up some saves in the second half of the season if he pitches well and Chad Qualls continues to struggle.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/8, 12:23 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Diamondbacks' reliever Tom Gordon threw live batting practice on Tuesday. It is yet to be determined if he will need a rehab stint before being activated by the team.

Our View: It looks the like D-Backs feel like Gordon is close, and if he doesn't go on a rehab assignment he could be back very soon. Even if he does take a short trip, expect him back with the team sometime soon after the break.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 6/27, 9:15 AM CT
The Arizona Republic reports that Tom Gordon has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Our View: Looks like Gordon's gimpy hamstring isn't quite up to snuff yet. The ancient reliever likely won't hold any fantasy value even if he does eventually return to the team.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/18, 8:03 PM CT
Tom Gordon threw 35 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday according to the AP. It was the first time he had thrown since going on the disabled list on May 4 with a pulled left hamstring.

Our View: It sounds like the ball is finally rolling toward a Flash return. When he does make it back, he could be a darkhorse candidate to close should something happen to Chad Qualls.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/17, 9:39 AM CT
Tom Gordon could throw off a mound later this week for the first time since injuring his hamstring in early May according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The ageless "Flash" has been monumentally slow in his rehab thus far, and doesn't appear ready to contribute any time soon. If he ever does come back, he could be a wild card candidate to close some games should something happen to Chad Qualls, but until then keep him out of your mind when it comes to your fantasy team.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/27, 10:10 AM CT
Tom Gordon ran for the first time Tuesday since hurting his left hamstring May 3, according to the Arizona Republic. He reported no pain.

Our View: This is encouraging, but there remains no timetable for his return to Arizona. He is not worth waiting for in fantasy leagues as a middle reliever.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/16, 9:39 AM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, Tom Gordon resumed throwing Friday after a bullpen session on Wednesday that saw him collapse on the mound due to a hamstring issue.

Our View: It's good that Gordon is throwing again, but his hammy seems to be excruciatingly painful and he's still a ways off from rejoining the team.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 5/4, 11:30 AM CT
Tom Gordon is likely headed back to the 15-day DL with a pulled hamstring, according to the Diamondbacks' official team website.

Our View: Gordon allowed four earned runs and three walks over a mere 1.2 innings of relief with Arizona, and won't be missed in fantasy leagues if placed on the DL.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 4/28, 8:54 AM CT
Tom Gordon has been activated from the 15-day DL, according to TSN. He was recovering from a sore right elbow.

Our View: Gordon won't hold much fantasy value as a middle reliever, but could help Arizona's bullpen with Jon Rauch struggling as a seventh inning setup man.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/27, 10:26 AM CT
Tom Gordon could be activated from the 15-day DL prior to today's game against the Cubs at Chase Field, according to the Arizona Republic. He has been recovering from a sore right elbow.

Our View: The club likes him as a gritty leader in their bullpen, but his fantasy value will be limited as a middle reliever. He is needed with Jon Rauch struggling as their seventh inning setup man.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/25, 7:52 AM CT
Reliever Tom Gordon could return to the active roster on Saturday, this according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Gordon hasn't thrown a big league pitch this season because of a wonky elbow. Though he is a long shot to contribute much, the fact that Jon Rauch has been so awful to start the year means that Gordon could end up pitching some important innings if he proves himself to be healthy.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 4/14, 11:08 AM CT
Tom Gordon is expected to start his minor league rehab assignment before the end of the week, according to the Arizona Republic. He is recovering from a sore right elbow.

Our View: Barring a setback, Gordon could return to the Diamondbacks' bullpen before May, but will only hold value in deeper NL-only leagues that feature middle men.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/11, 7:35 AM CT
Tom Gordon pitched a simulated game before Friday's batting practice, according to the Arizona Republic. He is coming back from offseason elbow surgery. "His stuff looked pretty crisp to me," manager Bob Melvin said. "Hard breaking ball, hard cutter. He was letting it go with his fastball. I know he was excited about the outcome."

Our View: Gordon could either throw another sim game or pitch in a minor league game. Either way, the timetable for his return seems to be creeping up, and he hopes to be back before May.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/8, 9:59 AM CT
Tom Gordon, who is nursing right elbow soreness, is expected to throw a bullpen session today, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Gordon is coming off elbow surgery, and is not expected to return to Arizona's bullpen until late-April or early-May. He will only hold value in deeper NL-only leagues that use middle men.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/6, 10:50 AM CT

Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/1, 9:12 AM CT
MLB.com reports that Tom Gordon will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday morning and his next sessions will come on one day's rest. The reliever is coming off elbow surgery, and all appears to be going well so far in his rehab.

Our View: Gordon will not be ready for opening day, but he could return at some point in April. Regardless, he does not figure to be in line for ninth-inning duties and he does not hold any current fantasy value.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/24, 6:48 PM CT
Reliever Tom Gordon threw a bullpen session on Tuesday. The 41-year-old hurler is coming off of elbow surgery, and he threw all of his pitches on Tuesday. "I expected to feel good, but not that good," he tells MLB.com.

Our View: He's still in the league? Yep, Gordon is still trying to wring every ounce out of his oft-injured arm. Fantasy owners should steer clear until Gordon works in games and shows signs of turning back the clock a few years.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 3/12, 6:23 PM CT
Tom Gordon, recovering from offseason elbow surgery, appears to be about a week away from throwing his first bullpen session since the operation, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Once one of the game's top closers, Gordon will open the season on the DL and, regardless of when he comes back, is highly unlikely to have any fantasy relevance. After compiling a 2.21 ERA in 89.2 innings with the Yankees in 2004, his ERA has increased significantly in each of the four seasons since while his innings have seen a significant decrease with each passing year.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 2/6, 3:31 PM CT
Tom Gordon has signed a one-year deal with Arizona, according to KTAR.com. He will earn $500,000 guaranteed, and could rake in up to $2.5 million in incentives.

Our View: The 41-year-old vet underwent ulnar nerve decompression surgery in October, and it is uncertain if he can make an impact with Arizona, who lost Brandon Lyon and likely Juan Cruz from their pen.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 1/30, 5:42 PM CT
The Diamondbacks are nearing an agreement with Tom Gordon, according to the Diamondbacks' official site.

Our View: Gordon went 5-4 last year with a 5.16 ERA in 34 appearances with the Phillies. It's unlikely that he'll compete for their closing job, but with a great spring, anything could happen.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 1/29, 12:27 PM CT
The Diamondbacks are reportedly interested in Tom Gordon, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The club is considering the 41-year-old reliever to help fill out their bullpen following the losses of Brandon Lyon and likely Juan Cruz.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 10/19, 1:28 PM CT
Tom Gordon underwent surgery on his right elbow Thursday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, which included an ulnar nerve decompression and the removal of loose bodies and a bone spur.

Our View: Gordon is in the final days of a three-year, $18 million contract. The Phillies have a $4.5 million option, or $1 million buyout, on Gordon for 2009, and they are expected to take the buyout. Gordon has been on the DL since early July.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 10/10, 10:44 AM CT
Phillies reliever Tom Gordon will have surgery on his right elbow, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Gordon has not pitched since July because of the injury. There was some speculation that he could return to the team if they made a postseason push, but that is obviously not going to happen.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/20, 11:03 AM CT
It is possible that Phillies reliever Tom Gordon, who is dealing with an elbow injury, could return to the the team should they make the postseason, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: Gordon has been throwing off of flat ground, and he'll only be back if he makes quicker-than-expected progress. He won't be back in the regular season, squashing any potential fantasy value.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 9/11, 2:43 PM CT
Tom Gordon, who has been on the DL since July with an elbow injury, threw off flat ground without pain Tuesday at the Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Florida, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Our View: There is a slim chance he will return to the Phillies' bullpen in the regular season, but if he continues to progress he may be available in the playoffs.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 8/12, 9:47 PM CT
Philadelphia receiver Tom Gordon is probably going to be out for the rest of this season, according to Phillies.com. He has an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament, near the elbow.

Our View: Gordon is going to wear a brace and try to rehab his elbow in hopes of avoiding Tommy John surgery, which would cost him all of next season.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/8, 5:47 PM CT
Tom Gordon may need to have Tommy John surgery on his elbow which could effectively end his career, according to MLB.com. "Right now we aren't optimistic that he will [pitch this season]," head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan said.

Our View: Gordon will go for a second opinion with Dr. Lewis Yocum on Monday, but it appears that the relievers career might be over after a poor performance on the hill this season (5.16 ERA, 1.62 WHIP).
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/6, 8:15 PM CT
Tom Gordon was removed from a rehab game for Single-A Clearwater on Wednesday after experiencing right elbow discomfort, according to MLB.com. The veteran will return to Philadelphia to see team physician Michael Ciccotti.

Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/30, 12:53 PM CT
Tom Gordon, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, is throwing off the mound in Clearwater, Florida, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: Pitching coach Rich Dubee doesn't have a timeline on when to expect Gordon back with the Phillies, but he is hopeful it will be before September.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/23, 11:04 AM CT
Tom Gordon, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, could begin to throw off a mound within seven to ten days, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 7/21, 11:27 AM CT
Tom Gordon, who is recovering from right elbow inflammation, is long-tossing, but it is still too early to tell when he might begin throwing off the mound, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Our View: Gordon would have been eligible to play Tuesday, but will need to remain on the DL longer than 15 days. The Phillies remain uncertain when he may be able to rejoin the team.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/9, 1:04 PM CT
The Phillies are yet to set a timetable for Tom Gordon's return, who is on the DL with right elbow inflammation, according to the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer. Pitching coach Rich Dubee said, "I'm talking about being optimistic as far as him coming back and being able to be a vital piece for us. I think the rest will do him good. We're not going to zip him back here. We're going to make sure he's feeling right before he gets up and running."

Our View: His DL stints have been lengthy, as he spent more than two months on the shelf last season due to a strained rotator cuff. He is not expected to pick up a baseball for the next five to 10 days as he begins his rehab program in Clearwater.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 7/6, 9:34 PM CT
Tom Gordon was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/3, 8:53 PM CT
Tom Gordon earned a one out save in the Phillies 4-1 win over Atlanta on Thursday night. The save is the veteran right-handers second of the season.

Our View: Gordon came in for the final out of Cole Hamels' near complete game, and did so because closer Brad Lidge had pitched the last three games. Lidge's Thursday night appearance saw him throw 28 pitches making him unavailable for tonight's game.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 6/27, 9:25 AM CT
Tom Gordon pitched for the first time since June 15 after missing a week to soreness in his right shoulder, this according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "He's OK," manager Charlie Manuel said. "That's the first time he's been out there in about eight days. The work did him good. Flash is going to be OK. He's fine."

Our View: Gordon allowed two runs (one earned) in one inning of work. The veteran's fantasy value rests in leagues that reward holds.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/26, 6:08 PM CT
Tom Gordon made his first appearance since June 15 in today's game against Oakland, and gave up two runs while allowing two hits and walking one.

Our View: Gordon has been dealing with shoulder soreness, which is why he has not been on the mound recently. If he's healthy, he hasn't shown it yet.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/26, 10:04 AM CT
It has been revealed that Tom Gordon is dealing with soreness in his shoulder for the past week or so, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. Charlie Manuel said, "We've been staying away from him a little bit, but he was definitely ready Tuesday."

Our View: This news helps explain why he hasn't seen any action since June 15.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/15, 10:59 AM CT
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has a plan for lessening 40-year-old reliever Tom Gordon's workload without suffering the eighth-inning blues, this according to the team website. That plan has come about largely because of Manuel's trust in relievers Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson, and that duo doesn't intend to blink if the spotlight on them becomes a little brighter.

Our View: Gordon's value in traditional fantasy formats is zero, but he's been a mainstay in leagues that offer hold and as a backup to the Brad Lidge who had knee surgery in March. This news all but dimishes Gordon and his fantasy worth in most formats.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 4/24, 8:09 PM CT
Tom Gordon picked up his first victory on Thursday as he lowered his ERA to 7.27, a marked improvement from his 135.00 mark after his first outing, according to MLB.com. Over his last 8.1 IP, Gordon has posted a 2.16 ERA.

Our View: Gordon is working his way back to being the team's secondary save option in the bullpen behind Brad Lidge, but with the way Lidge is going, don't look for Gordon to pick up any save chances unless Lidge is injured.
Tom Gordon, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 3/31, 8:02 PM CT
Tom Gordon sports an ERA of 135.00 after the Phils opening day loss to the Nationals. In a third of an inning, Gordon offered the Washington bats, four hits, five runs and one walk. "[Dr. Lewis Yocum] said this is an injury that other pitchers have had, and they've pitched for three or four years in a row," Gordon said. "How long this has been occurring for me, I don't know. I started to feel some of the effects in late '05. In '06, I definitely had a while where I wasn't feeling as good as I would like. Most pitchers have that and are able to go out there a few more years after that. That's what I'm hoping."
