Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 1/11, 12:28 PM CT
The Rays have signed Dan Johnson to a one-year, $500,000 deal, according to the St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin.

Our View: Johnson, who played last year in Japan, has flashed potential in his past but has never been able to consistently package it together. He'll have a chance to make Tampa Bay's roster as a reserve first baseman and designated hitter.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 1/9, 2:50 PM CT
Dan Johnson has inked a one-year deal with the Yokohama BayStars of Japan's Central League, according to Slam Sports. The deal comes out to $1.2 million in U.S. currency.

Our View: Johnson failed to make an impact with the Athletics and Rays, and the 29-year-old will be hoping to fare better with a fresh start in Japan.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 12/20, 11:46 AM CT
The Rays are believed to be close to shipping infielder Dan Johnson to Japanese club Yokohama, according to MLB.com. The Rays would receive cash in exchange for Johnson.

Our View: Speaking of first basemen, the Rays remain interested in slugger Jason Giambi.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 9/9, 9:55 PM CT
Dan Johnson may have missed his chance to start, but he still managed to shine. He smacked a game-tying homer off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning on Tuesday night. The Rays went on to win 5-4 three batters later.

Our View: It certainly was an interesting day for Johnson, who probably woke up thinking he'd be playing a playoff game for the Durham Bulls.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 9/9, 7:09 PM CT
Due to a late arrival, Dan Johnson did not start in left field for the Rays on Tuesday night. The club instead plugged Ben Zobrist into the lineup in center field, moved Gabe Gross to right field, and shifted Eric Hinkse to left, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Our View: The Rays made a late call to move Johnson up from Durham, so this isn't really his fault.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 9/9, 5:18 PM CT
Dan Johnson was not only called up on Tuesday. He will play left field and his second against Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Red Sox, the Boston Globe notes.

Our View: Johnson was the co-MVP of the Durham Bulls this year, which of course makes him ready to face Dice-K.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 9/9, 3:58 PM CT
Dan Johnson has been recalled by the Rays from Triple-A Durham, according to the Tampa Tribune. Infielder Joel Guzman was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Our View: Johnson crushed 25 homers at Durham and maintained a .307 batting average, and was brought in to provide depth with BJ Upton (strained left quad) and Shawn Riggans (knee bursitis) both expected to be out for a few days. He has never played anything but first base in the majors, but the Rays are listing him as an outfielder.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysSaturday 4/26, 11:23 PM CT
Dan Johnson hit a home run as Triple-A Durham’s DH on Saturday.

Our View: Johnson is much too good to be playing at Triple-A, but he certainly has not done anything over the last couple seasons to show that he deserves regular playing time in the majors.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 4/23, 1:31 PM CT
Dan Johnson has been designated for assignment by the Rays, according to the St. Petersburg Times. The team needed to make room for the newly acquired outfielder Gabe Gross, and Johnson was seen as being the most expendable.

Our View: The team wanted Johnson to spell Carlos Pena at first base, and get some action from the DH spot, but that plan came to an end. Jonny Gomes and Eric Hinske won't have to share playing time with Johnson now.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 4/20, 4:56 PM CT
1B/DH Dan Johnson was added to the Rays 25-man roster on Sunday, this according to the St. Petersburg Times. The team optioned right-handed rookie Jeff Niemann back to Triple-A Durham after Sunday's game.

Our View: Johnson was claimed off waivers on Friday from the Athletics and will immediately receive at bats cutting into the fantasy value of Jonny Gomes and Eric Hinske.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 4/18, 12:59 PM CT
The Rays claimed Dan Johnson off waivers on Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Our View: Maybe this was actually the "major" news the Rays were advertising for this afternoon! Johnson can DH and play first base, and he'll likely have to battle Eric Hinske for playing time.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 4/9, 3:48 PM CT
Dan Johnson has been designated for assignment by Oakland, according to the AP. That means the team has 10 days to put Johnson on waivers, trade him or release him. The team needed to free up a roster spot for pitcher Greg Smith, and Johnson was the most expendable member of their roster.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 4/9, 9:05 AM CT
Dan Johnson could be on the verge of losing his roster spot with the A's, according to the SF Chronicle. The team needs to make room on their roster for tonight's starting pitcher Greg Smith, and Johnson is believed to be the most expendable. He has only registered one at-bat this season, and the team has Daric Barton at first base, and Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust available for the DH. He would likely get claimed on waivers if cut, and the Giants are believed to be interested. The A's could go another way with their cut, and we will keep you posted.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 3/25, 7:33 AM CT
Dan Johnson is reportedly on the bubble to make the final roster, according to MLB.com. Johnson hit a mere .236 over 416 at-bats in 2007.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 2/19, 4:34 PM CT
Following up on a previous report on the A's Dan Johnson and hoping he can move past his variety of maladies; he and ex-Royal Mike Sweeney were in the same batting-practice group Monday -- and both hit numerous balls that cleared the fence. Sweeney, even launched one dinger that hit the groundskeeper's car according to SF Gate. Johnson and Sweeney and reportedly in a battle for the first base/designated hitter role, but the M.O. for both players would indicate they'll miss time to injury this year.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysTuesday 2/19, 2:42 PM CT
Dan Johnson revealed Monday that he spent eight days in a hospital last month with a bout of sinusitis. He nearly had to have a hole drilled into his forehead to drain his sinuses, which would've sidelined Johnson for two months, but he nixed that idea. "I said, 'No, no, no! I have to get back to my job,'" Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle. He also had viral meningitis over the winter, and between the two ailments lost 30 pounds. He's since gained 15 of those pounds back. Johnson is trying to hold of veteran Mike Sweeney for a roster spot.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 2/14, 12:29 PM CT
The acquisition of Mike Sweeney puts Dan Johnson's roster spot in jeopardy. The two will compete for time at DH, and with the middle of the A's lineup already left-handed heavy, the right-handed hitting Sweeney could have an edge. "I don't even know what to say, which way they're going," Johnson said in the Mercury News. He added that he wouldn't expect he and Sweeney "to be on the same team if we're at the same position." Johnson's production has dipped the last two years after a strong rookie campaign. He is a lot younger than Sweeney and isn't nearly as much of an injury risk, but it sounds as if the A's may be ready to go in another direction. Keep an eye on this battle in spring, because whoever wins the DH job will at least have some value in AL-only play.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 5/9, 9:49 AM CT
Dan Johnson is hitting .333 on the year (13-for-39), and he credits his good start with being able to see the ball well, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He was diagnosed with double vision over the winter. "I can just see," said Johnson. "I'm seeing the ball. I'm not fighting to put the ball in play. I'm up there to drive the ball, to do something with it. I'm seeing one ball instead of two." Johnson is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak.

Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 4/5, 9:07 AM CT
Dan Johnson won't need surgery on his left hip, which means he could be back in weeks, not the three months that was originally estimated, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'm pretty excited," said Johnson. "Now I just have to get my strength back and get back to doing baseball stuff. ... If everything goes right, I could be (doing baseball activity) next week. It all depends on how much leg strength I have when I start moving (the hip) again." There's still no definite timetable for his return, but he'll begin physical therapy today.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysWednesday 4/4, 11:52 PM CT
Dan Johnson obtained "several orthopedic opinions" before being told surgery wasn't required on the torn labrum cartilage in his left hip, the AP reports. Johnson is ready to start physical therapy at the Athletics spring training facility in Phoenix, though manager Bob Geren has no idea when Johnson may begin baseball work -- let alone when he might play again.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysThursday 3/29, 7:56 AM CT
Dan Johnson didn't play Wednesday and is listed as day-to-day with a hip injury, the Contra Costa Times reports. Manager Bob Geren is brainstorming game plans in case Johnson isn't ready for Monday's opener, but the hope is that Johnson returns in time.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 2/9, 11:57 AM CT
Dan Johnson battled double vision at times in 2006 in addition to a dry-eye problem, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. One of the prescriptions Johnson was given during the season apparently caused the double vision; Johnson just thought his vision was blurry, and that complicated the diagnosis, because "my perception of what was wrong was wrong." Johnson has been undergoing intensive eye therapy this offseason and is pleased with the results. "There were dramatic results right away. It's night and day."
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysFriday 1/26, 9:38 AM CT

Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysMonday 7/31, 7:46 AM CT
Even though Dan Johnson is tearing things up with Triple-A Sacramento, A's GM Billy Beane said a move to recall Johnson is not imminent, according to the Contra Costa Times. "Right now I don't think there's a roster spot available for him," Beane said. "There could be a trade -- I'm not saying there will be -- or there could be an injury, but I'm hoping there won't be. Hopefully he'll remain hot when he comes back up here and re-establishes himself." Since being optioned to Triple-A, Johnson has hit .456 (26-for-57) with six homers and 25 RBI in 14 games.
Dan Johnson, 1B, Tampa Bay RaysSunday 7/30, 9:08 AM CT
With the struggles of Nick Swisher, Dan Johnson, who is tearing it up at Triple-A, could find himself back on the A's roster soon, according to the Mercury News. Johnson is hitting .442 (23 for 52) with five homers and 20 RBIs in 13 games since joining Triple-A Sacramento.
