Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 10/1, 5:40 PM CT
Justin Upton had just one hit on Thursday, but managed to drive in two runs. The Diamondbacks lost 7-3 in San Francisco, however.

Our View: The two-RBI increased Upton's 2009 career-best total to 86. Batting .304 with 26 homers, 86 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 2009, all only at age 22, it's clear the sky is the limit for Upton. Consider him an elite fantasy outfielder for the 2010 season.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/25, 11:47 PM CT
Justin Upton was productive in tonight's 4-0 loss to the Padres at Chase Field, as he went 2-for-4 with two singles.

Our View: Upton accounted for two of Arizona's six hits in the shutout loss. He has two hits in two of his last three games, and is now hitting .271 this month.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 9/24, 8:16 AM CT
Justin Upton went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Wednesday, as Arizona lost 5-2 to the Giants at home.

Our View: Upton's four Ks came in a game where Mark Reynolds expanded his single season strikeout record to 208. To say the Diamondbacks need to work on their plate discipline for 2010 is an understatement.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/19, 11:08 PM CT
Justin Upton hit a three run homer off of Jason Hammel in Saturday's 10-4 loss. He was 1-for-3 on the day with four RBI.

Our View: Upton is having a breakout fantasy season overall, but he's hit a bit of a cold spell. Aside from Saturday's homer and a 5-for-5 game on Thursday, he's been virtually nonexistent in September.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 9/16, 6:23 PM CT
Despite Justin Upton's first career five-hit game on Wednesday, the Diamondbacks couldn't beat the Padres, losing 6-5 in ten innings in San Diego.

Our View: Upton's big day upped his average from .300 to .308. With his 24 homers, 76 RBI and 19 steals in just 124 games this season, he should be one of the first outfielders off your board in 2010.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/11, 11:50 PM CT
Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in tonight's 6-3 loss to the Brewers at Chase Field. He hit a single and a solo homer off Braden Looper.

Our View: Upton snapped a nine-game skid without a homer, and now has 24 for the season. He was 0-for-10 over his previous three games as well.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 9/6, 10:01 PM CT
Justin Upton was pulled from the team's loss to the Rockies on Saturday after failing to hustle out of the box on a hard hit single, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Upton made the common rookie (ok, veteran too) mistake of easing out of the box for a hit he thought was going to be a home run that turned out not to be one. His punishment won't extend past his Sunday removal.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 9/3, 9:33 PM CT
Justin Upton was a late scratch from the D-Backs' lineup on Thursday with a contact lense problem, according to the Twitter page of team writer Steve Gilbert. He was replaced by Alex Romero in the outfield.

Our View: Upton has been on a tear since getting healthy, and this sounds like something minor that shouldn't keep him out longer than tonight. Expect him to get the contact situation solved quickly, and he should be back tomorrow.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 9/2, 12:35 AM CT
Justin Upton went 3-for-5 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: Upton has been dynamite since coming off the DL. He's now hit in ten straight games and has multi-hit efforts in six of those. Looks like he's building on that .417 August average.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/30, 9:36 PM CT
Justin Upton went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and ripped his 22nd home run in a 4-3 win over the Astros on Sunday.

Our View: He has now homered in back to back games and has at least one hit in every contest since coming off the disabled list on August 26th.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 8/29, 11:52 PM CT
Justin Upton went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI on Saturday, as the Diamondbacks blew out the Astros 9-0 at home.

Our View: Upton also hit his first home run since being activated off of the disabled list three games ago. The strained oblique that sidelined him for over 20 days appears to be a distant memory.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/26, 5:03 PM CT
Justin Upton (strained oblique) will be activated before the team's game Wednesday night against the Giants, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: No word yet if he is actually in the lineup. Upton has been out since August 5th with the injury. Prior to going down, he was batting .301 with 20 home runs, 66 RBI and 16 steals.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/20, 6:51 PM CT
Justin Upton (strained oblique) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment at Single-A Visalia next Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Upton is believed to be already ready to hit, but still needs a little more time to heal so can run and throw at 100 percent. As long as he doesn't suffer any hiccups in his first few rehab games, he could be back in as little as ten days.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/19, 7:25 PM CT
The Arizona Republic is reporting that Diamondbacks' outfielder Justin Upton took batting practice in an indoor batting cage on Wednesday. Upton is hoping to begin a rehab assignment some time next week.

Our View: Upton is expected to hit on the field a few times over the next couple of days, and assuming he makes it through without reinjuring himself, he should go to the minors on schedule. Look for Upton to return to the team in a few weeks, so he should be there for fantasy owners for the stretch run.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/16, 9:01 AM CT
According to MLB.com, Diamondbacks' outfielder Justin Upton threw for the first time since his injury on Friday. Upton has been on the DL with a strained right oblique.

Our View: Upton took part in rotational drills on Friday as well, and the team hopes he can begin a rehab assignment within the next week or so. When he does come back, fantasy owners should get him in, but it looks like he is still a few weeks away.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/7, 8:27 AM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks are hopefull that outfielder Justin Upton will be able to return from the DL when he is eligible in two weeks. Manager A.J. Hinch told the paper that "The best-case scenario is probably 10 to 14 days. It doesn't make sense to go without a player for 10 to 14 days. We'll put him on the DL and hope for a speedy recovery so that he's back when the 15 days are up.

Our View: Upton missed over a month last season with a similar injury, but the team seems optimistic that he will be able to return much sooner this time around. Fantasy owners should keep a close eye on his recovery and hope that Hinch is correct in his assessment.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/6, 3:44 PM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, the Diamondbacks have placed All Star outfielder Justin Upton on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain.

Our View: Upton injured himself in Wednesday's game trying to steal second base in the ninth inning. Upton had a similar injury last season and ended up missing a month, so the D-backs and owners alike have to be crossing their fingers hoping this one is not as serious. No word yet on how much time he will miss.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/5, 10:01 PM CT
Justin Upton left the team's win over the Pirates on Thursday in the eighth inning after hurting himself sliding into second base, according to the Associated Press. He is believed to have a strained oblique.

Our View: Ohh boy. The Diamondbacks are already thin the outfield and can ill-afford to lose their best player. Stay tuned for updates.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/29, 11:54 PM CT
Justin Upton homered and drove in three runs on Wednesday, as the Diamondbacks beat the Phillies 4-0 at home.

Our View: Fulfilled potential is a beautiful thing. Consider Upton as a potential top ten pick next season.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/25, 11:37 PM CT
Justin Upton went 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBI in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Pirates.

Our View: Upton has been miserable in July, hitting just .190 coming into Saturday's game, but he's still managed to pop four homers and drive in 15. Even when he's off he's still productive and perhaps today's showing is a sign that he's breaking out of his skid.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/11, 11:29 PM CT
Justin Upton went 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in tonight's 5-1 win over the Marlins at Chase Field. He hit a triple and three singles.

Our View: Upton now leads the Diamondbacks with a .301 batting average. He collected four hits in a game for the second time this season.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/23, 11:35 PM CT
Justin Upton hit his 14th home run on Tuesday and drove in three as the Diamondbacks wiped out the Rangers 8-2.

Our View: Upton has been delivering on his enormous talent in 2009 and has quickly developing into one of the National League's top outfielders. If you have him, you have no excuse to not be starting him every day, no matter who your outfielders are.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/21, 12:24 AM CT
Justin Upton led the way for the Diamondbacks on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as his team fell to the Mariners 7-3. Upton went 3-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and two RBI in the game.

Our View: Upton continues to be a rock solid fantasy outfielder, and the former number one pick is living up to his billing. He should be utilized in all leagues, and he is highly valuable in keeper leagues.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 6/20, 12:12 AM CT
Justin Upton went 1-for-4 with a single and an RBI in Friday's 4-3 loss at Seattle.

Our View: Upton has an RBI in three straight games, and has 40 for the season. He continues to lead Arizona with a .313 batting average.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 6/8, 9:59 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Justin Upton is sitting out tonight's game at San Diego after aggravating his left shoulder Sunday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Upton stated that he merely tweaked his shoulder, and the ailment is not serious. He may miss Tuesday's game as well however, and manager A.J. Hinch said he is day-to-day. He should be held out of fantasy lineups until further notice.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 6/8, 8:49 AM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, Diamondbacks' outfielder Justin Upton will likely be held out of Monday's game after leaving in the tenth inning Sunday night with a shoulder injury. Upton is considered day-to-day.

Our View: The shoulder doesn't appear to be in very bad shape, but manager A.J. Hinch is going to be cautious with his young outfielder. Upton is likely out tonight, but expect him back in the lineup within a day or two. As good as he has been lately, you will want to get him back in the lineup as soon as he returns.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/7, 7:45 PM CT
According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Justin Upton has left in the tenth inning of Sunday's game against the Padres with an aggravated left shoulder.

Our View: This is not good news. He apparently injured himself while striking out. Upton has been exceptional this season and owners are likely shaking in their boots right now. Consider him day-to-day until we know more.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/7, 12:19 AM CT
Justin Upton launched another home run on Saturday in the Diamondbacks' 6-4 loss to the Padres. Upton now has 11 homers on the year.

Our View: After an awful start to this season, Upton has become just as good as everyone thought he would be. He is the one bright spot in an otherwise terrible D-Backs' order, and he should continue to be a solid fantasy option all season.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/3, 12:07 AM CT
Justin Upton chipped in four RBI on a grand slam in Tuesday's 6-5 loss at Los Angeles.

Our View: Upton ended a ten-game skid without a homer. He now has 10 homers, and trails Mark Reynolds by three for the club lead.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 5/28, 11:37 PM CT
Justin Upton stayed hot on Thursday as he knocked three hits in Arizona's 5-2 win over the Braves. Upton was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Our View: As bad as Upton was in the first month of the season, he has been equally as good this month. Upton seems to have come into his own, and he should be a strong play in all leagues going forward.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/27, 11:54 PM CT
Justin Upton continued his torrid stretch this month. He was 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Padres.

Our View: He's hitting close to .400 this month and now has his season average up to .335. The prospect appears to have blossomed and he is now a must play in all fantasy formats.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/24, 7:33 PM CT
Justin Upton was 2-for-4 with a double in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the A's.

Our View: Upton has quickly become the fantasy talent that scouts and owners expected, but had yet to see in his brief career. After hitting just .250 in April, he's raking in May with a .368 average, seven homers and 18 RBI. Feel confident playing him every day.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 5/11, 11:58 PM CT
Justin Upton continued his tear at the plate against Cincinnati on Sunday, belting a two-run shot off Bronson Arroyo, Upton's seventh of the season.

Our View: Upton has an 18-game hit streak on his hands and has hit all seven of his home runs over his past 17 games. He's as hot as can be, so hopefully you didn't give up on him after his slow start.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 5/10, 7:27 PM CT
Justin Upton went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a stolen base, and three runs scored in Arizona's 10-8 win over the Nationals on Sunday.

Our View: Upton has a 16-game hitting streak going and he is starting to grow into his potential. He is still striking out too much, but he is finally drawing some walks as well.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/6, 11:50 PM CT
Justin Upton homered twice as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 3-1 on Wednesday. He accounted for all three RBI and scored twice on a 2-for-4 night.

Our View: Upton hit third in the order tonight and is riding a 12-game hit streak. Three of his five home runs have come in his last five games. If he continues to hit third, his fantasy value figures to jump.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/2, 8:45 PM CT
Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-1 win at Milwaukee. His other knock was a single.

Our View: Upton extended his hitting streak to nine games, with 12 hits over the span.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/29, 6:03 PM CT
Justin Upton was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and three RBI as Arizona beat the Cubs 10-0 on Wednesday.

Our View: Upton is getting hot in Arizona. He has eight hits, including two home runs, seven RBI, and five runs scored in his last six games. His average has jumped from .167 to .246 in that span.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 4/26, 9:01 PM CT
Justin Upton was 2-for-3 with a ninth inning two-run homer in Sunday's 12-inning 5-4 win over the Giants. His blast was part of a three-run ninth that extended the game.

Our View: Upton came through in a big way on Sunday, but he's off to an abysmal start to the season. Even with today's big performance, he is still only hitting .222 with two homers and five RBI.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/25, 11:02 PM CT
Justin Upton was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Arizona's 5-3 loss to the Giants on Saturday. He picked up his fourth strikeout in the loss.

Our View: Despite the home run, Upton's struggles continue. He has 14 strikeouts in 14 games and he has yet to steal a base. Those expecting a breakout season may have to wait another 12 months.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/17, 12:03 PM CT
Justin Upton told the Arizona Republic that he does not need to be sent to Triple-A to correct his swing. "I played here in '07, I played here all of last season, and in my mind and being a competitor, I don't think I need to go there," he said. "I think it's just a matter of time before I get hot and start swinging the bat."

Our View: Upton has been working tirelessly with hitting coach Rick Schu, and he has so much talent that you have to believe he can get out of this slump. Still, he could probably benefit from hitting in a lower stress environment. When he does get hot, he will be fun to watch.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/13, 9:09 AM CT
Justin Upton is hitless over nine at-bats so far this season. He has walked once, and struck out five times.

Our View: Perhaps he can end his slump tonight against St. Louis at Chase Field. He holds a .316 average over 19 career at-bats versus the Cardinals.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/6, 10:17 AM CT
Justin Upton will not start the Diamondbacks' season opener against Colorado today, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Eric Byrnes will start in right field in his place. Upton is not injured, and manager Bob Melvin is merely taking advantage of flexibility with the roster. Byrnes fared better in spring training than Upton, and Byrnes is 7-for-23 (.304) against today's opposing hurler Aaron Cook.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 4/2, 6:45 PM CT
Justin Upton drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the third inning of Arizona's 7-4 loss to Colorado on Thursday.

Our View: Upton is an intriguing player. He has all the talent in the world, and it's easy to forget he's still just 21 years old. He'll likely get picked up on NL-only draft boards, but could get hot during the season, in which case he would instantly become a hot commodity across mixed leagues.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/17, 7:00 PM CT
Justin Upton went 0-for-3 Tuesday and lowered his pedestrian spring average to .235.

Our View: A lot is expected of B.J.'s baby brother, and the potential is there, but until he proves he can put it all together at the Major League level he remains an exciting question mark for fantasy owners. His spring stats aren't helping his spot on draft boards either.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 3/9, 12:07 AM CT
Justin Upton had two hits in three trips to go along with two RBI in Arizona's 11-7 loss to Seattle on Sunday.

Our View: With a little more discipline around the plate, this could be the season the younger Upton joins big brother B.J. in superstar status. It's not out of the realm of possibility to see the 21-year-old left-fielder hit 20-plus home runs this season with 80 or more RBI and an average better than .280.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/3, 8:53 PM CT
Justin Upton had a big day against San Francisco on Tuesday, going 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk, one RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Our View: Upton experienced several highs and lows last season, not all that unexpected from a mere 20-year-old in his first full season in the bigs. If he could add speed to his game, his fantasy ceiling would be through the roof.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/27, 12:16 AM CT
Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in Friday's 6-4 win over Colorado. He hit a triple and a solo home run.

Our View: Upton has 15 homers, with four coming in September. Look for Upton to make a bigger impact in 2009, namely in the power department.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 9/15, 11:18 PM CT
Justin Upton went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo homer in Monday's win over the Giants. It was his second straight game with a home run.

Our View: The more shocking news may be that Upton has gone two straight games without a strikeout. The young outfielder has a wealth of talent, but he is still fairly raw.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 9/14, 9:15 PM CT
Justin Upton had four hits on Sunday including his 12th home run of the year for the D'backs.

Our View: Upton is 6-for-9 the past two days to boost his average to .375 in 32 AB since being activated from the DL. Remember he started out similarly in April hitting .340 before slowing down greatly (.216 in May, .123 in June), just going to prove that this young player, while tremendously talented, is still searching for some form of consistency.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 9/9, 1:22 PM CT
Justin Upton made his third straight start in right field Monday, according to the East Valley Tribune. He leads all major league outfielders with 10 errors but manager Bob Melvin said, "He’s going to make some mistakes. Experience comes with reps and games played."

Our View: Upton remains a low-level fantasy outfielder, as he is only hitting .244 and hasn't scored a run in six straight games. He only registered two RBI over that span as well.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 9/2, 9:04 PM CT
Outfielder Justin Upton was scratched from the lineup on Tuesday as he is dealing with headaches after he got hit in the head with the ball on a pickoff attempt, according to DBacks.com.

Our View: Cardinals reliever Brad Thompson attempted to pick off Upton but the throw was low, and hit Upton in the noggin as he slid back in head first.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 9/2, 1:10 PM CT
Justin Upton is considered day-to-day and may not play Tuesday after getting struck in the head by a pick-off attempt on Monday night, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View: We will keep you posted regarding his status. The Diamondbacks have options in the outfield, so the team will feel no need or urgency to rush him back into action.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/29, 6:29 PM CT
Justin Upton has been activated from the DL following his bout with a strained left oblique, according to the East Valley Tribune. Leo Rosales was optioned to Triple-A Tucson to make room on the roster.

Our View: The team is yet to determine Upton's role. They did not acquire slugger Adam Dunn to ride the pine.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/27, 4:19 PM CT
It appears that Justin Upton is going to find his way back to Phoenix. According to the East Valley Tribune Upton will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson on either Friday or Saturday.

Our View: Upton has been hitting the ball better at Tucson, homering on Tuesday night.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/24, 9:29 PM CT
Justin Upton is healthy, but he has not performed well so far in Triple-A, which has delayed his return to the team, according to the Arizona Republic. In his last five games, Upton had struck out 11 times in 18 at-bats, with only three hits.

Our View: Before Upton can be recalled, he'll have to at least start to make contact and hit the ball somewhere in fair territory.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/20, 8:06 AM CT
Justin Upton returned to the D-Backs' clubhouse Tuesday, but it was just to work out with the team and he remains on the DL, according to the Arizona Republic. He is recovering from an oblique strain.

Our View: He won't be activated for a few more days and will resume his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson. It remains to be seen how much playing time he gets in a crowded D-Backs' outfield when he returns. Chris Young is currently penciled into center field with Conor Jackson in left. Adam Dunn in is right, and was not acquired from the Reds to ride the pine.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 8/16, 2:48 PM CT
Justin Upton is progressing well in his rehab from a left oblique strain, and he is now 6-for-14 in Triple-A Tuscon, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Manager Bob Melvin wants Upton to continue to get more work in the minors, so he will not be back to the big leagues until sometime next week. Upton has little value in mixed league formats, and even in NL-only leagues he is a bit of a gamble. His season has been somewhat disappointing, as he has just 11 home runs and 31 RBI to go with a .242 average.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 8/11, 10:28 AM CT
Justin Upton will begin a rehab assignment with Tucson Monday, according to the Arizona Republic. He is recovering from a left oblique strain.

Our View: His rehab stint is expected to last at least a week. If he proves to be healthy upon his return, he could provide a boost to fantasy owners, namely in NL-only leagues. 27 of his 67 hits went for extra bases this season (12 doubles, four triples, 11 homers), and he scored 43 runs.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 8/9, 2:18 PM CT
Arizona outfielder Justin Upton will start his rehabilitation assignment next week in Triple-A Tuscon, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View: Upton felt good in batting practice, which made this move possible. He will be down for at least a week, so those in NL-only leagues who have him will have to be a little more patient.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/8, 1:12 PM CT
Justin Upton, who is recovering from a left oblique strain, reported no pain during a batting practice session Thursday, according to the East Valley Tribune. He hit several balls into the seats at Chase Field, and marked the first time he has hit outside since sustaining his injury July 9. Manager Bob Melvin said, "After the first few swings, it looked like his normal swing. He was driving some balls out of the park."

Our View: Arizona hopes to send Upton on a rehab assignment in the next couple of days, at the latest by the time the team leaves on their trip to Colorado and Houston on Monday. He should get a number of at-bats, and won't be activated until he feels good about his swing.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/7, 8:52 PM CT
Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton will begin his minor league rehab assignment as soon as Monday, and has been taking live batting practice on the field, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin has said that Upton will need more than a few at-bats in the minors, so don't expect him up until mid to late August.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/6, 9:01 PM CT
Justin Upton will take batting practice on the field Thursday, the next step in his rehabilitation from a strained left oblique, according to MLB.com. If all goes well, Upton will hit on the field a couple more days before going on a rehab assignment. "I would say at the very least, a week," manager Bob Melvin said when asked how long of an rehab stint Upton would need. "I'd like him to feel pretty good about his swing when he comes back."

Our View: We'll let you know how Upton's hitting sessions go. It sounds like the best case scenario would have him back for the week of Aug. 18-24.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 8/4, 10:28 PM CT
Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton had an MRI done on his oblique to determine how far along the injury was, and to see when he could start to swing wiht more authority, according to DBacks.com.

Our View: Upton should begin a rehab assignment shortly, before returning to the big leagues. His fantasy stock has plummeted since his hot start. He remains mostly an option in deep NL-only leagues.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 8/4, 8:39 AM CT
Skipper Bob Melvin noted that Justin Upton will have to take batting practice for several days before starting his minor league rehab assignment, according to the Arizona Republic. Melvin said, "We've been pretty cautious based on how he's felt day to day. There haven't been any setbacks, but there have been certain days where he's been pretty sore based on whatever treatment he's getting. We still don't know. We could use him. Looking at it like we did going into the All-Star break we thought he might have a chance to come back right after that. It's been lengthier than we anticipated."

Our View: Upton has been out since July 9 with a strained left oblique. He could return by mid-August.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/1, 9:19 AM CT
Justin Upton took 20 swings of batting practice on Thursday and will do the same today as he prepares for a minor league rehab assignment, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Upton started out the season on fire but has cooled since then. He is an option in NL-only leagues, but until he can get the batting average raised and he can cut down on his strikeouts (he has struck out in 35% of his at-bats), his value in mixed leagues is marginal.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/30, 9:32 AM CT
Justin Upton, who is recovering from a left oblique strain, is getting closer to taking batting practice, according to the Arizona Republic. Manager Bob Melvin believes that might happen when the team plays the Dodgers, starting July 31.

Our View: Upton will take at least three days of batting practice before going on a minor-league rehab assignment. So Upton could be around two weeks from returning to the team.

The Arizona Republic indicates that Justin Upton is progressing slowly from his left oblique strain. He took some light swings on Sunday and manager Bob Melvin said, "It will be good for him to get some at-bats where he isn't grinding as hard as he was before he went on the DL."

Our View: Upton will go on a minor league rehab assignment when he is ready, but the team does not know when that may be.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 7/18, 10:15 PM CT
Outfielder Justin Upton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, according to TSN.com.

Our View: Upton has struggled after his scorching start, and has just four RBI after June 1. He isn't someone who should be on fantasy rosters right now.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 7/14, 11:25 AM CT
Justin Upton, who is nursing a strained oblique, said he is unsure if he will be ready to return to action when the team resumes play on Friday, according to the East Valley Tribune. He said, "At this point, we're still working on it. We'll see what four days can do and evaluate then."

Our View: Manager Bob Melvin previously noted that he was optimistic Upton would be ready to return following the break. He shouldn't be out very long if he isn't ready for Friday.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/12, 2:54 PM CT
Manager Bob Melvin is optimistic Justin Upton could be ready to return to action following the All-Star break, acccording to MLB.com. He has not played since straining his left oblique muscle on Wednesday. Melvin said, "Once we get these next three days off, we get him to a workout on Thursday, he should be a full go and hopefully starting the next day."

Our View: As for now, there is a chance Upton could be used as a pinch-runner in an emergency situation Saturday or Sunday against the Phillies, according to Melvin. This is good news, as it was previously believed that he would be placed on the DL.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/10, 5:54 PM CT
It is not yet known if Justin Upton will end up on the DL due to a strained oblique, but he will at least be sidelined through the D'backs weekend series prior to the All-Star break, according to the East Valley Tribune. "We'll re-evaluate during the All-Star break," GM Bob Melvin said.

Our View: It sure seems like Upton will end up on the DL, but there is no reason for the team to rush into that call as they have about a week before they will have to make that call. Look for Alex Romero and/or Emillio Bonifacio to fill in for now.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/10, 8:25 AM CT
Justin Upton may be heading to the DL with a strained oblique, according to the Arizona Republic. "It certainly could be DL. We're not sure," said manager Bob Melvin.

Our View: After a hot start, Upton hit .216 in May, and a ghastly .123 in June. He had a hit in all six games he played this month, however, so if you noticed that and picked him up, be on the lookout for the official word. We'll keep you updated when an announcement is made.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/9, 7:27 PM CT
Arizona outfielder Justin Upton is out of the lineup this evening, replaced by Chad Tracy.

Our View: Upton is nursing a strained ribcage and is going to get a rest. The injury is not believed to be a concern, but the D'backs are proceeding with caution.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 7/6, 6:48 PM CT
Justin Upton hit a 484-foot solo shot off of Josh Banks on Sunday. He was 2-for-3 on the day.

Our View: This might explain the 93 strikeouts and the .242 averae. Upton has a somewhat wiry frame and plus speed, but insists on hitting the long ball. However, it was just his 11th of the season.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/19, 6:42 PM CT
Justin Upton hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Oakland Athletics 2-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Our View: With the return of veteran Eric Byrnes from the disabled list soon, Upton's roster spot is in question. The word on the street is that the D'Backs are considering optioning their rookie back to the minors to work on his swing, and his suspect defense. He was out of the lineup on Wednesday and his stock had hit a season low. Upton was hitting .244 with a .783 OPS heading into Thursday's action, and the young outfielder had 84 strikeouts in 225 at-bats (a strikeout every 3.1 AB). The game winning home run came just in time. If he can gain some momentum in Minnesota this weekend he might stave off the demotion.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/12, 8:20 PM CT
Justin Upton is really struggling hitting only .140 with 43 K over his last 93 AB, and there are internal debates going on in the D'backs front office over whether or not Upton should be sent to the minors to work on his problems, according to the Arizona Republic. "Optioning him out isn't that appealing," GM Josh Byrnes said. "We're committed to him for a reason. We believe in him. Obviously for extended stretches he has shown how good he can be."

Our View: Upton has been overmatched of late, not that surprising considering he is only 20 years of age and has such limited experience. We can't see the D'backs sending him down right now, but it certainly is a situation worthy of keeping an eye on. In the least, Upton should be on your bench until he proves he hits his way out of his funk.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/1, 3:37 PM CT
Justin Upton was a late scratch on Sunday due to flu-like symptoms, MLB.com reports. Jeff Salazar started in his place.

Our View: Hopefully Justin simply needs a day or two to recover. The Diamondbacks play six times in the week ahead, so fantasy owners in smaller mixed leagues may have a tough call to make.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 5/29, 11:53 PM CT
Justin Upton hit his seventh home run of the season, his first in 17 games, in the D'backs loss to the Giants.

Our View: Upton will likely be a decent outfield option the rest of the way, but he clearly isn't ready to be the hitter he was early in the year. Continue to monitor his progress as he should excel against weaker pitching but struggle against top shelf opponents.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 5/27, 11:58 PM CT
Justin Upton was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Tuesday night and is in the midst of a 0-for-26 slump with 17 strikeouts.

Our View: Upton's hot start wasn't going to last forever. Twenty-year-olds are going to struggle at some point, no matter how talented they may be.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 5/22, 10:17 PM CT
Justin Upton went 0-for-4 on Thursday to drop his average to .296, the first time it's been under .300 since the third game of the season.

Our View: Face it, Upton just isn't ready to be a prime time performer yet. He has only one home run in 35 games, or about as many as Micah Owings, yeah that Owings the pitcher and teammate of Upton. Upton is still a remarkable long term option, but he just hasn't been able to sustain his hot start.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 5/9, 8:11 AM CT
Justin Upton batted in the cleanup spot for the first time in his Major League career on Thursday, and registered a solo homer, according to the East Valley Tribune. Conor Jackson's absence from the lineup led to the move.

Our View: Upton now has six homers and 17 RBI for the season, with a strong .344 average. His fantasy stock remains on the rise.

Our View: He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout against Houston on Monday, but fantasy owners are just happy to have him back. He is hitting .323 over 25 games, with five homers and 14 RBI.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/28, 9:20 AM CT
Justin Upton did not start on Sunday because of the hamstring injury he sustained on Saturday, according to The Arizona Republic. Manager Bob Melvin stated, "It's either kind of a deep cramp or a real mild strain."

Our View: Upton is expected to be back in the D-Backs' lineup within a few days. Upton was hitting .333 over 90 at-bats, with five homers and 14 RBI, and it took a hamstring injury to slow him down.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/26, 6:58 PM CT
Justin Upton, the 20-year old D'back phenom, had to leave Saturday's game against the Padres when he suffered a leg cramp.

Our View: Jeff Salazar replaced him in right field -- while Upton is considered day-to-day.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/23, 3:09 PM CT
Justin Upton has reached base in 18 straight games for Arizona this season, according to the East Valley Tribune. He is hitting .368 (28-for-76) overall, with five homers and 13 RBI, but has struck out 18 times. Manager Bob Melvin commented, "He’s off to an unbelievable start. I don’t know that he hits .370 or .380 over the course of the season, but I know confidence-wise, knowing that he’s getting it done early on, getting it done in our division against good pitching is something to fall back on."

Our View: Upton will continue to make strides with Arizona, namely as he cuts down on his strikeouts. Scoop him up if the price is right in your league.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 4/13, 10:57 AM CT
OF Justin Upton has reached base in 10 consecutive games for the Arizona Diamondbacks. During that stretch, the surging young fielder has hit .459 (17-for-37) with five home runs and 11 RBIs.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/12, 5:50 PM CT
Justin Upton hit his fifth home run of the new year amongst his three hits on Saturday. Upton also knocked in four runs and upped his average to .415.

Our View: Upton still is very raw and has a lot to work on at the plate, but his physical gifts have clearly been on display in the early going.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/11, 11:39 PM CT
Justin Upton continued his strong start to the season on Friday night as he hit his fourth home run of the season for the D'Backs. Upton is hitting .368 at the moment, but given the fact that he has 11 K in only 38 AB, it's almost impossible to predict that he will be able to sustain this level of success throughout the course of the season.

Justin Upton went 3-for-3 with an RBI against the Mariners on Wednesday night. That was his seventh RBI of the spring and he raised his average to .350. He should have a firm grip on the starting gig in right field.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 3/5, 3:34 PM CT
Justin Upton hit a long home run on Tuesday, and people were still talking about it on Wednesday. “That’s the hardest hit ball I’ve seen in a long time," a scout told the Arizona Republic. "It just kept rising. I saw him do the same thing last year during batting practice."
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 2/25, 12:01 AM CT
Justin Upton appeared to have packed on some muscle over the offseason, according to MLB.com. "He doesn't look like he's 20," manger Bob Melvin said of Upton. "He's got a chance to be a pretty good size. He already is. And he's put together pretty well, too." Upton is slated to start for the D'Backs in right field on opening day, and although he may not fully cash in on his considerable potential this year, he's still not a bad guy to gamble on late in a draft.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 9/30, 8:03 PM CT
Justin Upton left Sunday's game in the bottom of the second inning with a left forearm contusion, according to SportsTicker. It's uncertain whether Upton will be ready to play Wednesday, when the series with the Cubs begins.
Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 8/28, 11:03 AM CT
Justin Upton has been out of the starting lineup the last two games, but manager Bob Melvin insists that the youngster is still his everyday right fielder, according to the Arizona Republic. "Justin's basically our right fielder. . . . I don't foresee that being, as of right now, a platoon or anything like that," said Melvin. Upton is hitting just .229 in 70 at-bats with the D'Backs this year, although his struggles aren't particularly surprising, considering he'd never played above Double-A prior to his promotion.

Justin Upton, RF, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/7, 6:55 AM CT
Justin Upton has been seeing action in right field lately, while playing with Double-A Mobile, according to the Arizona Republic. His normal spot is center, but since Chris Young is entrenched there with the Diamondbacks, the speculation is that the club might be looking for a way to bring the 19-year-old up later this season in right. He's hitting .323 with 13 homers between Single- and Double-A thus far and likely wouldn't be called up on a short-term basis. Obviously nothing is imminent, but it's worth keeping an eye on Upton's progress.
