John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 10/2, 9:42 PM CT
John Maine only issued one earned run on five hits over seven innings in Friday's 7-1 win over the Astros at Citi Field. He had no walks and fired seven strikeouts.

Our View: Maine was in control tonight, and now has a winning record at 7-6. He bounced back after getting rocked for seven earned runs over 4.2 innings in his previous start at Florida.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 9/26, 11:31 PM CT
John Maine was destroyed by the Marlins on Saturday. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks over just 4.2 innings and fell to 6-6 after a 9-6 loss.

Our View: In an injury-riddled season, Maine was just never really able to put it together. He could still be suffering from lingering effects as he hasn't gone six innings in a start since May 31st.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/20, 3:13 PM CT
John Maine pitched five scoreless innings on Sunday, improving to 6-5 as the Mets beat the Nationals 6-2.

Our View: It would be nice to see Maine gather one or two more quality outings as the season winds down so he could head into 2010 on a positive note. In 13 starts, he is now 6-5 with a 4.13 ERA in his injury-shortened 2009 season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/13, 3:48 PM CT
John Maine returned to the mound on Sunday and pitched three innings in the Mets' 5-4 loss to the Phillies. Maine allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out two.

Our View: Maine was on a pitch-count today, and he actually fared pretty well in his return. He should get a few more starts in before this season is out, but he isn't a great fantasy play this season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 9/9, 9:10 AM CT
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, John Maine is scheduled to come off the disabled list on Sunday and take the mound against the Phillies.

Our View: Maine has been on the shelf for three months with shoulder fatigue. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday and will have another on Thursday before returning to the Mets. If you held onto him in fantasy leagues, it's best to sit him Sunday and see how he fares (especially against the Phillies loaded lineup). As for the Mets, it's nice they get him back, but it's too little too late.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 9/7, 9:06 AM CT
John Maine said that the two weeks he rested his shoulder made the difference in his recovery, according to MetsBlog.com. He was advised by Dr. James Andrews to rest the shoulder, and he is now throwing pain-free.

Our View: Maine made a rehab appearance on Saturday, and while he is not 100 percent, at least he is able to pitch without pain in his shoulder. Once again, the great Dr. Andrews comes through, although you would think rest would have been first on the list of things to do when Maine went down.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/6, 7:16 AM CT
The New York Post is reporting that injured Mets' starter John Maine made his first rehab appearance for Single-A St. Lucie on Saturday. Maine pitched four innings of shutout ball while allowing two hits and striking out six in 58 pitches, and he remains a candidtate to start one end of the team's doubleheader against the Phillies next Sunday.

Our View: Maine hadn't pitched in a game since June 6 before last night's appearance, and while he was impressive he may not be ready to return just yet. The Mets would love to get him back for a few more starts, but it's not worth it to rush him with the team already out of contention.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 9/1, 8:08 PM CT
According to the New York Post, injured starter John Maine (shoulder) has started a throwing program and could return to the Mets by the end of the season.

Our View: The Mets will obviously be careful with him, but if the rehab goes well he could return to the rotation. There's no reason to push him though as the Mets are well out of the postseason hunt.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 8/1, 10:54 AM CT
The Mets confirm that pitcher John Maine will rest indefinitely, and it's possible that they will at some point decide to shut him down for the rest of the season, MLB.com confirms.

Our View: Maine is just one of the many people and things that have gone awry for the Mets this year. There is no reason to own him in mixed leagues and little reason to hang onto him in NL-only formats.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 7/30, 7:31 PM CT
Dr. James Andrews confirmed that John Maine is dealing with shoulder weakness after an examination, according to Brian Costa's (Star Ledger) twitter page.

Our View: Maine will continue rehabbing at Port St. Lucie. There remains hope that he could return to the Mets before the end of the season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 7/24, 8:10 AM CT
John Maine could be forced to miss the rest of the season with a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The 28-year-old righty is seeking a second opinion on the ailing shoulder, from the vaunted Dr. James Andrews, but the Mets are apparently already bracing for the worst. Maine has been out since June 7, and was having a down year even before the injury, posting a 4.52 ERA and barely striking out more batters than he walked. Even if he does come back, it likely won't be for a while, and if you have other injured players, there's no sense in having him take up your DL spot.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 7/18, 8:20 PM CT
John Maine threw off flat ground Saturday in Port St. Lucie, according to the Star-Ledger. He is recovering from right shoulder fatigue.

Our View: Maine will next throw a side session on Monday. It remains uncertain when he will pitch in rehab games, and shall remain patiently stashed on fantasy rosters.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 7/16, 2:29 PM CT
MetsBlog.com is reporting that injured Mets' starter John Maine threw a simulated session on Thursday and reported no problems. GM Omar Minaya told the media that Maine could return to the rotation before the end of the month.

Our View: It sounds like Maine is doing much better, but with the way the Mets' season has been going, it wouldn't surprise anyone if it takes longer than a few weeks to get him back. Fantasy owners will want to check back for updates over the next few weeks.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 7/10, 3:29 PM CT
Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that John Maine threw a pain-free side session on Friday, and could rejoin the team by the end of the month.

Our View: Good news and the Mets are two things you don't see together very often in 2009, but that is the case here. Still, the Mets will need Maine to be better than he was before going on the disabled list. He posted a 4.52 ERA in 61.2 innings, and had struck out just eight more batters than he walked.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 7/6, 9:55 AM CT
John Maine has yet to throw from a mound in his rehab from right shoulder pain, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: No concrete timetable has been set for Maine's return, just that it will be after the All-Star break at some point. With the way the Mets have handled injuries this season, don't hold your breath. Maine wasn't overly good when he was healthy this year, and unless you have no one else on your team injured, he probably isn't worth stashing unless you are very short on pitching.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 6/26, 3:51 PM CT
John Maine has been shut down indefinitely and will not make his scheduled Saturday rehab start, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: When was the last time the Mets got good news on an injury? The team now "hopes" he will return after the All-Star break. If you are stashing him, remain patient, but know it could take a long time still.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 6/25, 10:15 AM CT
Newsday.com is reporting that injured Mets' starter John Maine is scheduled to make another rehab start on Saturday for Single-A Brooklyn. Maine is expected to rejoin the Mets after this start if there are no setbacks.

Our View: Maine has said he will only need one more rehab start before returning to the team, so assuming all goes well on Saturday it is likely he will return to the rotation some time next week. Maine owners should check back for updates, but be ready for his activation soon.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 6/24, 6:43 PM CT
John Maine reiterated that he is close to returning to the Mets, according to the New York Post. He has been recovering from a pinched nerve in his right shoulder.

Our View: Manager Jerry Manuel stated that Maine will not be activated for this weekend's subway series against the Yankees, but late next week is likely. Maine feels he will be ready to return to New York after one more rehab start.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 6/23, 5:51 PM CT
John Maine will throw another bullpen session on Wednesday and then possibly pitch in a game Saturday, perhaps even in the majors against the Yankees at Citi Field, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Maine has been recovering quickly and efficiently from his shoulder fatigue, and will be back very soon. You may be even able to activate him for next week, but obviously stay tuned for updates.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 6/22, 7:05 PM CT
John Maine allowed one run with three walks and one strikeout over four innings of work in his rehab outing with Single-A St. Lucie, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Maine should pitch one or two more times in his rehab stint before returning to the Mets. He has been on the DL since June 12, and has been recovering slowly from right shoulder fatigue.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 6/20, 2:35 PM CT
David Lennon reports from his Twitter page that John Maine will start one game of a doubleheader on Monday in Class-A St. Lucie to rehab his right shoulder.

Our View: Maine has been on the DL since June 12th, and is not recovering as quickly as the Mets would have hoped. He felt a pinch in his shoulder during Thursday's side session, but reported no pain after. So, he's still an enigma. Check back after the rehab start and we'll know more.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 6/19, 6:05 PM CT
John Maine's 60-pitch side session went well Thursday, but Omar Minaya did not give a timetable as to when Maine may return to the Mets' rotation, according to Newsday. He is recovering from right shoulder fatigue.

Our View: Fernando Nieve will start tonight against Tampa Bay, and he will take Maine's next turn in the rotation after that as well. Maine did not wake up with any pain in his shoulder today.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 6/18, 8:32 PM CT
John Maine has suffered a setback in his recovery from right shoulder fatigue, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Maine was supposed to come off the disabled list on Monday when the Mets played the Cardinals, but apparently felt another pinch in his right shoulder. It is not known how much longer he will now be out. Fernando Nieve will keep Maine's spot in the rotation while he is out.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 6/16, 8:41 PM CT
John Maine will throw off a mound later this week at the Mets Port St. Lucie facility as part of his rehab from shoulder fatigue according to the New York Post.

Our View: There is still no timetable for his return, however.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 6/11, 10:32 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, John Maine has been placed on the 15-day DL due to shoulder fatigue, according to MetsToday.com.

Our View: Maine previously stated that his ailment is nothing serious. The DL move is retroactive to June 7, which was the day after his last start. The Mets did not disclose an adjoining move, or who will replace Maine in the rotation.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 6/11, 10:44 AM CT
John Maine has had his start against the Yankees pushed from Friday to Saturday according to Newsday.

Our View: Maine has been having a rough season so far in 2009, going only 5-4 with a 4.52 ERA. Not a terrible year by a lot of people's standards, but certainly less than is expected from the Mets young righty. He is apparently still dealing with the effects of a bone spur he had removed from his throwing shoulder last year, so that could explain some of the drop off. Odds are that he will settle down, however, especially pitching in the pitcher friendly Citi Field, and will have a solid fantasy campaign in 2009.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 6/7, 7:27 AM CT
John Maine is still dealing with tightness in the area where doctors removed a bone spur from his throwing shoulder last season, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Maine was rocked for seven runs in his start against Washington Saturday, and he looks to be an unstable fantasy option for his next outing. His velocity was notably decreased in Saturday's loss.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 6/6, 8:41 PM CT
John Maine got roughed up by the Nationals on Saturday as the Mets fell 7-1. Maine went four innings and allowed seven runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one. He fell to 5-4 on the season with the loss.

Our View: Maine must still be a bit sick, because he didn't have it tonight. The Nats' lineup isn't terrible, but a healthy Maine wouldn't have given up seven runs in four innings. Expect him to be better his next time out, when he is fully recovered from the stomach ailment.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 6/5, 3:41 PM CT
According to the New York Daily News, John Maine feels much better and has declared himself good to go for Saturday's start against the Nationals. Maine had been suffering from a stomach ailment for the past few days.

Our View: Maine said he had a full meal last night and he is close to 100 percent. He also mentioned his legs are still a little weak, which doesn't bode well for his ability to get a strong push-off on the mound. Since it's against the Nats, you should prbably get him in if you have him.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 6/3, 11:20 AM CT
According to Newsday, John Maine is dealing with flu-like symptoms, but shouldn't missed his scheduled start on Friday.

Our View: Apparently he picked up a bug from Carlos Beltran (one one of the other sickly Mets) and says that his stomach is "killing him". He threw a rocky bullpen session Tuesday and the illness is clearly affecting his performance. He says he'll be on the mound Friday, but how well he handles pitching with stomach discomfort remains to be seen. This may be a good time to leave Maine on your bench.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 5/31, 3:01 PM CT
John Maine picked up his fifth win of the season on Sunday as the Mets beat the Marlins 3-2. Maine went six innings and did not allow a run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.

Our View: Very impressive by Maine today, especially considering that he left after six innings with a stomach illness. Maine has been pretty good as of late, and he is once again turning himself into a decent fantasy pitcher.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 5/31, 2:16 PM CT
The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that John Maine left Sunday's game in the seventh inning with a stomach illness. He is expected to be fine for his next start.

Our View: Maine must have spent a little too much time hanging out with Carlos Beltran, who was also out today with a stomach virus. Maine should be fine next time out, so no worries here.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 5/25, 9:55 PM CT
John Maine allowed only one run over six innings while picking up his fourth win of the season on Monday night. He allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four as the Mets defeated the Nationals 5-2.

Our View: Maine has yet to work seven innings through nine starts, but he has pitched pretty well over his last six. He won't get many strikeouts, but if he can limit his walks, he should be in line for a healthy amount of wins in 2009.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 5/20, 12:16 AM CT
John Maine dropped to 3-3 after a poor performance against the Dodgers on Tuesday. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks over just 5.1 innings as the Mets fell 5-3.

Our View: Maine is not a strong fantasy starter as he's not really a great source for wins, strikeouts or ERA. He's a decent option in NL-only leagues, but avoid him in mixed formats as he won't be worth the one fantasy-worthy start every four times he's on the hill.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 5/15, 1:26 AM CT
John Maine pitched well on Thursday, but his bullpen couldn't deliver him a win. The Mets came back and won the game, however, with three runs the in top of the ninth. Maine went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four.

Our View: Maine has been very strong as of late, and he continued it tonight. He is a strong play in all leagues at this point, and if for some reason he is available in your mixed league you need to pounce on him now.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 5/9, 3:07 PM CT
John Maine only allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings of work in Saturday's 10-1 win over the Pirates at Citi Field. He issued two walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: Maine has won three straight starts, and this was another strong performance. Keep him active in fantasy lineups while he is in command.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 5/4, 9:19 PM CT
John Maine was very good again on Monday, going six innings and allowing three runs on three hits while walking six and striking out seven. He evened his record at 2-2 with the win.

Our View: Maine was still fairly wild tonight with the six walks, but he used his seven strikeouts to help him out of some jams. Maine could be really good if he regains some control, but his last two starts have made him relevant in all leagues again.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 4/27, 9:41 PM CT
John Maine had everything working for him in Monday's 7-1 win over Florida. He allowed only one hit, three walks, and one unearned run while striking out four.

Our View: Maine struggled with his control through his first three starts, but he reminded everyone of his potential tonight. We expect his production moving forward to be better than what we saw in April.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 4/17, 3:14 PM CT
According to Mets' manager Jerry Manuel, John Maine's improving health and increasing strength might actually be contributing to his command problems, reports the New York Times. Maine is coming off of arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder at the end of last season.

Our View: Maine has not been very good this season, giving up eight runs in just ten innings pitched in his two starts. He won't be this bad all year, and could prove to be a nice fantasy pickup once he turns it around.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 4/16, 10:33 PM CT
John Maine got rocked by San Diego on Thursday, giving up six runs off seven hits and three walks while striking out four in five innings.

Our View: Maine looked solid in his first start but is far from a reliable fantasy starter. Don't panic on Maine if you own him in a deeper mixed or NL-only league, but he may not be worth hanging on to in shallow to mid-level mixed formats.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 3/21, 4:25 PM CT
John Maine was roughed up by the Braves on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over just four innings.

Our View: Maine has been atrocious this spring and is not looking like the Mets' number three starter. He'll need to step it up over the next few weeks if he's going to have any fantasy value this season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 3/10, 4:18 PM CT
John Maine was rocked for five runs on five hits in three innings Tuesday against the Nationals. He walked two, struck out two, and allowed two home runs.

Our View: Maine walked two for the second consecutive abbreviated outing. Granted it's still early, but the Mets will need Maine to be sharp this season to take some of the pressure off ace Johan Santana.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 3/1, 7:19 PM CT
John Maine had a decent outing on Sunday, but he needs to display better control as he walked a pair in two innings. His only crucial mistake was allowing a solo home run to Miguel Tejada in the first inning. He also struck out one batter.

Our View: If Maine can remain healthy in 2009, he should be capable of winning 15 games, especially playing for a team with such a potent offense in the Mets.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 2/16, 12:36 PM CT
John Maine is working on adding a curveball to his arsenal of pitches, according to MetsBlog.com. Maine has not thrown a curveball in a few years.

Our View: Regardless of whether he can effectively use a curveball, he should still be a nice value pick for fantasy drafts if he can nail down a rotation spot in spring training. Maine is pain-free while coming off surgery to fix a bone spur in his throwing shoulder.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 2/10, 1:25 PM CT
John Maine indicated he is pitching pain-free right now, according to the NY Post. He is coming off surgery to fix a bone spur in his throwing shoulder. He said, "I feel a lot, lot better."

Our View: This is encouraging news regarding his chances of making the Mets' rotation out of spring training. Maine could be a nice value pick in fantasy drafts if he can bounce back and stay healthy.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 1/30, 8:02 AM CT
The Mets have avoided salary arbitration with John Maine by signing the hurler to a one-year deal worth $2.6 million, according to the NY Post. Maine can earn an additional $25,000 by pitching 200 innings.

Our View: Maine is coming off surgery to remove spurs from his right shoulder, but the Mets are optimistic he can slot back into the rotation for 2009. He can prove to be a nice value pick in fantasy leagues if he can bounce back and stay healthy.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 9/30, 4:16 PM CT
John Maine underwent surgery on his should on Tuesday to remove a "lesion" on the back of his right shoulder socket, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Maine should be fully healthy by the start of next season, at which time the Mets will once again depend on him every five days as one of their starters. Because of the injury concerns and his less than strong performance this season (10-8, 4.18 ERA, 1.35 WHIP), Maine should come fairly cheaply next season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/28, 12:12 PM CT
John Maine is slated for surgery next week to fix a bone spur problem in his right shoulder, according to the NY Post.

Our View: He should be good to go for spring training after finishing the year with a 4.31 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. Given his struggles with injury this season, and his decline in performance, Maine's outlook is nowhere near as solid as it was at the start of the 2008 campaign.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 9/25, 4:16 PM CT
The Daily News reports that John Maine will not be used the rest of the season. Manager Jerry Manuel said it's his decision alone, even though medical staff has cleared him. Manuel said he can't in good conscience use a young player in a game who needs surgery. "I just don't like anybody pitching young with anything," Manuel said. "That's just my hang-up."

Our View: If the Mets don't make the playoffs, this will not have been a popular move. It's hard to argue with Manuel's logic though. It's a figurative "breath of fresh air" to see a manager put the good of the player ahead of the good of the team.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 9/24, 7:20 PM CT
Metsblog.com reports that John Maine has been activated from the disabled list. He had not appeared since August 23rd due to a bone spur in his throwing shoulder.

Our View: Maine will likely be used out of relief if used at all. If he were to somehow find his way into the closer's role, which is not entirely impossible because of the Mets' bullpen woes, he would hold some fantasy value.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 9/23, 11:06 PM CT
John Maine tossed lightly before the game and hopes to be activated Wednesday, according to the AP

Our View: Maine will be used as a reliever when/if he returns, which makes his fantasy value pretty much non-existent.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 9/22, 4:57 PM CT
John Maine threw 25 pitches on Monday and proclaimed himself ready to go, according to Newsday. Maine is hopeful of pitching out of the bullpen as early as Wednesday.

Our View: Maine certainly won't be a fantasy factor the rest of the regular season, but he could offer some quality innings out of the pen in the playoffs if the Mets make it that far.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 9/20, 2:15 PM CT
Just one day after thinking that pitcher John Maine would not be able to return at all this season, the Mets right-hander threw a bullpen session and did so without pain in his shoulder, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: In a pretty quick turn of events, Maine now says it's possible he could be activated by Monday if he feels good after waking on Sunday. He would return to the team as a reliever, but not likely as the closer.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 9/20, 12:26 PM CT
John Maine's return to the team is unlikely, according to the New York Times.

Our View: Maine has a bone spur in his right shoulder, and he will undergo surgery on it in the offseason. He will throw a simulated game Saturday, which will help determine his course of action.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 9/19, 10:47 AM CT
John Maine, who is recovering from a bone spur in his right shoulder, is slated to pitch a simulated game Saturday, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: Barring a setback, he should be available to pitch out of the bullpen next week. Maine will require off-season surgery to shave the bony growth that is irritating the rotator cuff.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 9/18, 4:10 PM CT
John Maine is working hard on getting back into game action for the Mets and on Thursday he made another step towards that goal. For the first time since being injured, Maine was back on the mound and threw 10 pitches without pain in his right shoulder. It is realistic that Maine could pitch out of the bullpen next week, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Maine will not pitch again this year as a starter but the Mets are hoping that he can contribute some innings out of the bullpen. He has no fantasy value coming out of the pen.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 9/17, 10:41 AM CT
John Maine, who is recovering from a bone spur is his right shoulder, threw off flat ground Tuesday at 100 feet, according to the NY Daily News. He will undergo off-season surgery to shave down the bone spur.

Our View: He is expected to be part of the Mets' rotation for 2009. As for now, he is aiming to return to provide relief out of the bullpen for the postseason.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 9/16, 8:10 AM CT
Talk of Mets hurler John Maine becoming the team's closer in 2009 is unfounded, and he will remain a starting pitcher, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: Maine has had a solid year, and despite his injury problems, fantasy owners can expect him to get better next season after he undergoes surgery to repair bone spurs in his shoulder.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 9/15, 5:53 PM CT
Pitcher John Maine is hoping to rejoin the Mets as soon as next Monday, the New York Post reports. he has been out since August 24 due to a bone spur in his right shoulder. Maine will return as a reliever and will need offseason surgery.

Our View: Fantasy owners shouldn't expect anything out of Maine in the final weeks, even though he has volunteered to be the closer.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/14, 2:00 PM CT
The Mets' official website reports Maine could conceivably closer for the Mets next season. "But we're not looking at that now," said GM Omar Minaya. "We'll go into the offseason with John as a starter. But you don't know what the offseason could be. We could make a deal, bring in two starters and move John to the bullpen. But right now, he's a starter."

Our View: This move seems somewhat unlikely at this point, but it is worth keeping in mind for keeper leagues.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/14, 9:18 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, Maine (shoulder) will accompany the Mets on their upcoming road trip and play long toss.

Our View: There is still no word on whether Maine will be able to return during the season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 9/7, 1:37 PM CT
Maine, recovering from a bone spur in his shoulder, was told to wait another week before picking up a baseball, reports the New York Daily News. He was originally told that he could throw on Sunday.

Our View: This could prevent him from returning during the regular season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 9/6, 9:15 AM CT
John Maine will play catch on Sunday for the first time since being placed on the DL with a bone spur in his right shoulder, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View: He hasn't been ruled out to return this season, but will move to the bullpen if he does.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 8/25, 4:25 PM CT
Mets hurler John Maine was put on the 15-day disabled list with a bone spur in his right shoulder, according to MLB.com. He will not throw at all for two weeks before attempting to get back at it, so his return to the rotation wouldn't come until the middle of September at the earliest.

Our View: The Mets still do not know who is going to take Maine's spot in the rotation, but whoever it is won't help fantasy owners quite as much as Maine did. He was certainly solid, and though a bit too wild at times, his 7.84 K/9 helped even things out.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 8/24, 2:17 PM CT
Less than 24 hours after a compromised performance added a layer of doubt to the immediate future of John Maine, that doubt was amplified by his manager. Jerry Manuel presented a scenario Sunday morning that had Maine being shut down for the remainder of the season because of the bone spur in his right shoulder and the pain it has caused, according to MLB.com. Manuel acknowledged a "very good possibility" exists that Maine will be replaced in the rotation. And if he is replaced, the manager said, "I would think it would be a complete shutdown."

Our View: While pitching coach Dan Warthen said Maine remains scheduled to start the Mets' first game in Miami on Friday night, he and Manuel said contingency plans are in place in case the condition of Maine's shoulder - his rotator cuff sore because of the spur - worsens. The club already had planned to have Brian Stokes start against the Marlins in place of Mike Pelfrey, whose normal day to start would be August 31st. Pelfrey, Warthen acknowledged, would benefit in two ways: getting an extra day of rest and not facing an opponent responsible for three of his eight losses this season. But if the determination is made that Maine shouldn't pitch, Stokes could replace him Friday and another pitcher - Warthen favors Nelson Figueroa because of his assortment of breaking pitches -- could be summoned to start August 31st.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 8/23, 9:46 PM CT
John Maine was knocked around Saturday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Houston.

Our View: Maine's velocity has been down since returning from the DL. He got away with it in his first two starts, but obviously he didn't tonight.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 8/20, 12:10 PM CT
Manager Jerry Manuel has decided not to pull one of his starters out of the rotation to help out the bullpen while Billy Wagner is on the shelf, according to the NY Daily News. John Maine was one of the main starters being considered to work out of the pen, but Manuel wants to keep him on regular rest while dealing with his shoulder problems.

Our View: While Wagner is out, Aaron Heilman leads the team with three saves.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 8/19, 9:01 AM CT
John Maine fared well on Monday, but he has lost the velocity on his fastball, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Maine had been suffering from shoulder problems, and the team concedes he may not get his velocity back this season. "There might be some good innings and bad innings. But, for the most part, he's going to be where we saw him today -- 88 to 90," said Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen.

Our View: This is somewhat troubling news for fantasy owners counting on Maine down the stretch. On one hand, this could lead to worse performances and fewer strikeouts down the road. However, if he can continue to throw as well as he did on Monday - five innings, no runs allowed - then there are no problems.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 8/18, 2:57 PM CT
John Maine hurled five scoreless innings, with only two hits allowed, in Monday's disappointing 5-2 loss to the Pirates, with four walks and three strikeouts. He exited the game with the Mets leading 2-0, and a late Pirates' rally left him with a no-decision.

Our View: He pitched well, other than the four free passes, and poor run support prevented him from claiming his 11th win of the season. Maine is 2-0 over his last four starts, and has only allowed one earned run over his last three outings (14.1 innings).
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 8/18, 10:09 AM CT
John Maine (10-7, 3.97 ERA) allowed just one hit and struck out six is five scoreless innings in his return start from the disabled list against the soft-hitting Nats, and looked dominant in the process. The Pirates and Nats have similar peripherals, at least after Pittsburgh traded Jason Bay and Xavier Nady. The Pirates sport a .652 OPS in August, which is 29th in the league.

Our View: Maine is 2-0 with a 3.75 ERA in his last two starts against the Pirates, in those 12 innings he has 15 strikeouts.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 8/13, 9:15 PM CT
In his first start since coming off the disabled list, Mets pitcher John Maine went five innings, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out six and earning his tenth win of the year in New York's 12-0 victory over Washington.

Our View: Okay, so he did this against the Nationals, one of the worst offensive teams in baseball, but it was still an impressive performance. If you hadn't activated him in your fantasy team yet, don't hesitate to do so.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 8/12, 11:04 PM CT
Mets hurler John Maine will be activated from the disabled list tomorrow, according to MetsBlog.com. Carlos Muniz will be sent down to clear a roster spot.

Our View: Earlier, Mets manager Jerry Manuel mentioned that Maine could be turned into the team's closer after he makes a start on Wednesday. The situation is still up in the air, and it will obviously affect fantasy teams. We will keep you updated on any news.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 8/12, 4:50 PM CT
It is possible that John Maine could become the Mets closer after his start on Wednesday, according to the New York Post. It's also a possibility that Oliver Perez or Mike Pelfrey could be moved from the rotation to the 'pen, as manager Jerry Manuel has seen his relievers blow too many contests.

Our View: Manuel said he is debating putting one of the three into the closer role if Eddie Kunz, the team's newest late-inning hurler, fails to get the job done.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 8/8, 9:19 PM CT
John Maine threw on Friday, using all his pitches, and reported no pain in his shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Unless Maine wakes up sore on Saturday, the plan is for him to return to the hill on Wednesday. The Mets, and Maine's fantasy owners, hope that his return goes off without a hitch for a guy who has only one win in his last six appearances.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 8/6, 10:27 AM CT
John Maine, who is recovering from a strained right rotator cuff, threw another successful bullpen session Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News. His next step is to throw a simulated game on Friday at Shea Stadium.

Our View: That would put Maine on pace to pitch a week from today against Washington.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 8/3, 12:41 PM CT
The Mets announced today RHP John Maine has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to continue soreness in his left shoulder, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: Maine can be reactivated from the disabled list on August 13th. Mets pitching prospect Eddie Kunz was promoted from Double-A Binghamton to take Maine’s spot on the roster.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 8/1, 5:50 PM CT
John Maine will miss his next scheduled start because of his injured shoulder, according to the Associated Press. “It’s nothing serious,” he said. “A couple days off and it will be fine.”

Our View: Maine will throw on Sunday, and if he doesn't suffer a setback there he is in line to throw next Friday against the Marlins.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 7/31, 7:38 AM CT
John Maine will rejoin the Mets in Houston today, and his next start is likely to be skipped, according to MetsBlog.com. Maine left his last start with a sore shoulder, and an MRI revealed a mild strain in his rotator cuff.

Our View: Oliver Perez is expected to start in place of Maine Sunday, with Maine likely to take the ball sometime next week.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 7/29, 11:24 AM CT
John Maine will undergo an MRI today after leaving Monday's start with shoulder stiffness, according to MLB.com. "You get soreness," Maine said, "but it's never felt like this before." Manager Jerry Manuel added: "If there's any, any, any pain, (he) will miss a start. (He) won't pitch (his) way through it."

Our View: It sure sounds like Maine will miss at least one outing. We'll let you know how the MRI results come out.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 7/28, 8:41 PM CT
Updating a previous note, John Maine left Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with a stiff shoulder according to the AP.

Our View: It's unclear what the extent of the injury is but we'll keep an eye on the reports. Maine is 9-7 with a 4.20 ERA this season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 7/28, 8:02 PM CT
The AP reports that John Maine left Monday’s game against the Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with an undisclosed injury. Mets manager Jerry Manuel made a mound visit while Maine faced leadoff batter John Baker. After the visit, Maine gave up a home run to Baker and retired counterpart Ricky Nolasco before being removed from the game with the Mets leading, 2-1.

Our View: Not much is known about the extent of the injury but we will continue to monitor the news as it becomes available.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 7/23, 10:12 PM CT
John Maine held on to limit the Phillies to three runs over seven innings as his record improved to 9-7 on the year.

Our View: Maine allowed two long balls in a game for the first time this season, but he still produced a quality start for the Mets. He continues to be solid though he is struggling to recapture the form that led to 15 wins and a 3.91 ERA last season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 7/18, 8:57 PM CT
John Maine failed to pitch five innings for the third time in his last four starts and he took the loss as New York fell 5-2 to the Reds. Maine did account for five in many other statistical categories in this game, however. He allowed five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five.

Our View: Maine's ERA has been rising as the season has progressed, so fantasy owners may want to try another option until he gets this corrected.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 7/10, 3:37 PM CT
John Maine threw just 4.2 innings and allowed three earned runs while walking five and striking out eight in the Mets victory over San Francisco.

Our View: Maine is not much of an innings eater, as this is the second time in his last three starts that he has gone less than five innings. He is still a pretty viable option in fantasy leagues with his eight wins and high strikeout totals.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 7/7, 9:45 AM CT
John Maine, who is recovering from a left forearm cramp, expects to start for the Mets on Thursday, according to the NY Daily News. He indicated the ailment is just a stinger and he said he'll be fine.

Our View: This is the second time he has been bothered by cramps this season, and commented that he'll eat more bananas to avoid this from happening again.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 7/5, 8:05 PM CT
John Maine was forced from his start on Saturday night with an injury to his non-pitching arm, an apparent forearm cramp, according to the MLB.com.

Our View: This is the second time Maine has been bothered by cramps this year (the other date was April 26th). Someone tell the guy to drink a bottle of Gatorade on days he pitches.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 7/1, 7:30 PM CT
Mets RHP John Maine is reporting his throwing arm is doing just fine after telling the team his arm felt "dead" and "tired" on Monday, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Maine proceeded with his normal running workout on Tuesday, a day after complaining of a tired arm, and told manager Jerry Manuel that he was primed for his normal bullpen session Wednesday. Maine said his schedule had been a bit rushed following his previous start, with Friday's Subway Series doubleheader skewing everyone's schedules. And perhaps that was the reason why Maine lasted only four innings Monday, pitching without his usual zip.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 6/30, 11:22 PM CT
John Maine lasted only four innings in Monday's 7-1 loss to the Cardinals. The Mets, who have lost three of four and dropped the opener of an eight-game trip against the Central-contending Cardinals, looked like a team that has nothing to play for; this while entering the game only four games back of the NL East-leading Phillies. It wasn't that Maine pitched poorly, the Cardinals hit several seeing eye singles and bloop hits in the first four innings building an early 5-0 lead. Maine gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked three and struck out one in the loss.

Our View: Maine was visibly frustrated by the play of his teammates and committed his first error since 2005, suffering his sixth loss of the season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 6/30, 1:20 PM CT
John Maine is set to battle the Cardinals in St. Louis tonight, according to MLB.com. Maine is 8-5 this season, with a 3.73 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 94 innings, with 79 strikeouts.

Our View: Maine is riding a two-game winning streak, and has allowed two earned runs in each of those wins. Keep him active in your lineups.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 6/28, 3:07 PM CT
New York manager Jerry Manueal has told reporters the Mets, facing a four-game set against the Cardinals later this week and a rotation in need of help, will be either activating an arm from Triple-A New Orleans or may seek to trade for a vetearn capable of starting, according to MetsBlog.com.

Our View: The game in question will be on Tuesday, the second of the four-game set. John Maine is set to go on Monday but the spot after is vacant. We'll update as news comes forth.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 6/25, 10:10 PM CT
John Maine held the Mariners in check for six innings holding them to five hits and two runs, resulting in his eighth victory of the season.

Our View: Maine continues to hum right along with his quietly efficient production from the hill. Maine has proven himself to be a fine #2 starter over the past year and a half and an excellent third option.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 6/20, 12:50 PM CT
John Maine will take the mound tonight against the Rockies at Coors Field, according to MLB.com. Maine surrendered three earned runs on three hits over six innings in his previous visit to Colorado on May 25, while registering a season-high eight strikeouts.

Our View: Maine allowed a season-worst five earned runs in his last start (against Texas), and has allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last six outings.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 6/15, 3:47 PM CT
John Maine allowed five runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out five Texas Rangers over 6.1 innings on Sunday afternoon. Maine lost his fifth game of the season against six wins.

Our View: Maine threw 105 pitches and all of the damage came via Texas long balls. Two two-run home runs (Ian Kinsler and Ramon Vazquez) and a solo shot by Milton Bradley.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 6/15, 8:46 AM CT
When John Maine takes the mound today for the first game of the Sunday double header against the Rangers, Willie Randolph will be the Mets manager, and even if he ends it that way, there is still a strong sense that some sort of shake-up must occur, according to SI.com.

Our View: The report notes that Omar Minaya could shift his focus to jolting the coaching staff, most likely the pitching coach Rick Peterson, with the hope that such a move could inspire his sagging team.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 6/4, 5:53 PM CT
John Maine allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out four and the Mets scored a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. The Mets right-hander lowered his ERA from 3.66 to 3.47 with his one-run performance.

Our View: The victory is the sixth of the season for Maine. He continues to be the teams most consistent starter behind lefty Johan Santana.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 5/30, 9:50 PM CT
John Maine allowed four runs on five hits over six innings in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Dodgers. He only issued one walk with six strikeouts, and ended the contest with a no decision.

Our View: Maine has now allowed 11 earned runs over his last three starts. He is still having a good month as he only allowed four total earned runs over his three starts from May 2 to May 13, however.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 5/25, 6:55 PM CT
The Mets managed to just post just four hits on the day, leaving RHP John Maine to carry the load, a task he failed to achieve as the Mets fell 4-1 to the Colorado Rockies. Maine pitched six innings, surrendering four runs (three earned) on just three hits, posting four walks versus eight strikeouts.

Our View: Maine pitched well, but he now carries two consecutive losses after going 5-2 coming into late May.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 5/20, 3:22 PM CT
John Maine was dealt his third loss of the season on Tuesday, as the Mets fell to Atlanta 6-1. Maine surrendered four runs on eight hits over a mere four innings of work, with three walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Maine is now 5-3 for the season, with a 3.29 ERA. He is still enjoying a strong season, as he allowed two or less runs in each of his previous seven starts. He should bounce back fine.
John Maine, P, New York MetsTuesday 5/13, 9:19 PM CT
John Maine improved to 5-2 on the year thanks to six innings of two hit, one run ball against the Nationals.

Our View: Maine has now lowered his ERA to 2.81 thanks to seven straight starts of two or fewer earned runs allowed marking him as one of the more consistent hurlers in the early going.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 5/7, 5:34 PM CT
John Maine took a shutout into the ninth inning against the Dodgers before he allowed a run as he went 8.1 innings to pick up his fourth victory of the season.

Our View: Amazingly, this was the first time all season that a Mets pitcher reached the eighth inning. Maine lowered his ERA to 3.00 with this effort, and it was encouraging to see him walk only two batters in this outing after struggling with his control in some of his outings.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 4/26, 7:09 PM CT
John Maine reportedly experienced some tightness in his right arm during the Mets 4-3 win over Atlanta on Saturday.

Our View: The injury is not considered serious and he is expected to make his next start.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 4/26, 3:42 PM CT
John Maine evened his record to 2-2 in Saturday's 4-3 win over Atlanta, as he only surrendered two runs on three hits over five innings, with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: That was his highest strikeout count of the season, and he racked up 13 strikeouts over his last two starts. He only allowed seven earned runs over his last four starts as well. He is pitching very well since allowing four runs on eight hits in his first start of the season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 4/21, 9:13 PM CT
John Maine held the Cubs to two runs in six innings but he still was saddled with his second loss of the season. Maine allowed five hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View: It was nice to see Maine cut down his walk total tonight, and more nights that not an outing like this will end up in a win for Maine with the offense the Mets possess.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 4/16, 8:59 PM CT
John Maine allowed the Nationals two runs in 6.2 innings as he held them to five hits in his first win of the year.

Our View: Maine continued a disturbing early trend of walking far too many hitters with four on the night, he now has 12 in 16.2 IP, but he continues to limit the damage as his ERA sits at 3.78.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 4/5, 6:43 PM CT
John Maine was all over the place on Saturday as he needed 96 pitches to pick up just 12 outs. In those four innings, Maine allowed eight hits, three walks and four earned runs, though he did pick up five strikeouts, while picking up the loss. This was certainly not the type of outing Maine or his owners were looking for, and after a 5.53 ERA and 1.45 WHIP last season over his final 81.1 innings, is it time to panic a bit with Maine?
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 4/4, 8:08 PM CT
John Maine will be bumped back a day with Friday's rainout, according to the AP. He has the exact same matchup - vs. Tim Hudson and the Braves - so use him just as you would have had he started Friday.
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 3/30, 10:39 AM CT
John Maine had another spectacular outing on Saturday, shutting out the White Sox over four innings in a 3-2 win. The right-hander sent his ERA to a basement level, 1.53. Maine is expected to face the Florida Marlins and young starter Andrew Miller on Wednesday. A terrific battle of two very good young right arms.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 3/24, 2:20 PM CT
John Maine threw six strong innings on Monday, another stellar start for the young right-hander. Maine gave up one hit, one walk and struck out seven in the six innings of work against the Orioles. On March 14 Maine pitched five scoreless innings, followed by a March 19th appearance where he gave up one run in 5.2 frames. Maine has easily been the Mets strongest starter this spring and deserves top-tier fantasy status in all formats.
John Maine, P, New York MetsWednesday 3/19, 9:35 PM CT
John Maine threw five scoreless innings on March 14, and continues to roll as he only surrendered one run on five hits over 5.2 innings of work against Cleveland on Wednesday, with one walk and seven strikeouts. John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 3/14, 9:38 PM CT
John Maine worked five innings without surrendering a run in the Mets’ 8-2 victory over the Florida Marlins in the Grapefruit League today. In his most impressive outing yet, Maine gave up just three hits with one walk and six strikeouts on the day. That brings Maine to 10 consecutive innings without giving up a run. You can be the fantasy faithful are taking note as Maine’s stock rises.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 3/10, 7:05 AM CT
John Maine is firmly planting himself as the Mets No. 2 starter in the rotation, according to Metsblog.com. He has only allowed one run in his last seven spring innings and Rich Peterson commented, "It’s hard to say what Maine is, was or will be, since he is still young…this will be his tipping point season, i suspect…that said, i do know this: i trust John Maine…is he a number two, an ace, a back end guy, who knows…those are just labels…either way, i trust him when he is on the mound."
John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 3/9, 6:39 PM CT
John Maine threw four no-hit innings on Sunday, and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, allowing only a walk to David Newhan in the second inning. The Astros didn’t get a hit until Nick Gorneault’s two-out single off Billy Wagner in the fifth. Maine is a mixed league option regardless of format and with the smallest success this year will push a 13-15 win season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 2/28, 8:07 PM CT
John Maine took the loss in his first start of the spring as he allowed four hits and three runs in 1.2 innings on Thursday. Maine, like many other hurlers, is still working on little things like location and movement, so don't panic at all with this little stumble in his first outing.
John Maine, P, New York MetsThursday 2/21, 6:53 PM CT
John Maine faced live hitters for the first time on Thursday and he felt strong according to a report on the AP. “I wasn’t very result-oriented today. I felt good. I just wanted to get action on my pitches and I did. You know, it’s tough to go out there the first time against hitters.” Maine did a good job facing hitters last season on his way to 15 victories and 180 K. Maine isn't a top shelf starter, but he is squarely in the middle of that second level of hurlers especially considering the offensive support he should receive this season.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 4/20, 10:47 AM CT
John Maine will sometimes use an inhaler between innings as he looks to control his athsma, Newsday reports. "I never went to the doctor much growing up," Maine said. "Now that I'm around them more, I finally told somebody about this. I've always had a hard time catching my breath. I just never said anything." Maine is off to a 2-0 start with a 1.93 ERA in three turns this year, and he flirted with a no-hitter at Florida in his last outing.

John Maine, P, New York MetsSaturday 3/10, 9:30 AM CT
John Maine worked three more scoreless innings yesterday, as he has yet to allow a run this spring. Maine still has a minor league option left, but at this point, he appears set to break camp in the Mets rotation.
John Maine, P, New York MetsMonday 2/19, 8:34 AM CT
The New York Daily News reports that John Maine still has a minor league option remaining. The Mets will be able to send him to the minors without passing him through waivers, which gives the team a little more roster flexibility.
John Maine, P, New York MetsFriday 10/13, 12:13 PM CT
The Mets haven't altered their NLCS rotation even with Wednesday's rainout, so John Maine will stay in place for Game 2 tonight, with Steve Trachsel taking the ball Game 3. The Cardinals will counter with Chris Carpenter and Jeff Suppan.

John Maine might be on the playoff roster as a reliever, which would bump Roberto Hernandez off the roster, according to the New York Daily News. John Maine, P, New York MetsSunday 8/6, 11:33 PM CT
