Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsThursday 3/4, 3:32 PM CT
Likely Nationals setup man Brian Bruney had a rough spring debut on Thursday, allowing three baserunners and two runs in just one inning of work.

Our View: The Nationals' bullpen was astoundingly bad in 2009, and the club is counting on Bruney to be much better than he was today. More often than not, it's safe to assume he will be.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 2/17, 11:47 AM CT
Brian Bruney lost his arbitration case against the Nationals and will make $1.5 million in 2010, according to ESPN.com.

Our View: Bruney was asking for $1.85 million, so the loss shouldn't hurt too much. Look for the former Yankee to serve as fellow newcomer Matt Capps' setup man, and he could be in line for save opportunities if Capps struggles or gets hurt.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 2/16, 5:37 PM CT
According to the Associated Press, Brian Bruney and the Nationals were not able to come to an agreement this offseason and the two sides will head to arbitration.

Our View: Bruney filed for $1.85 million and the Nats countered with $1.25. No common ground was able to be met, so it's in the hands of the arbitrators. The reliever posted a 3.92 ERA with an 8.3 K/9 in 39 innings last year with the Yankees, but dealt with elbow issues in the first half. He would like to close for the Nats, but will have to improve on his 6.2 BB/9 ratio if that's going to happen. Stay tuned to see how much cabbage he rakes in this season.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 12/29, 11:29 AM CT
Brian Bruney would "prefer" to close for the Nationals in 2010, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He most likely will not, however. The recently acquired Matt Capps is believed to be in line to be the Nats' fireman. Capps struggled mightily in 2009, however, and should he do the same in 2009, Bruney would likely get the first crack at replacing him.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 12/25, 11:48 PM CT
There is belief Brian Bruney will be slated to serve as a setup man for the Nationals in 2010, according to the Washington Post.

Our View: Matt Capps will work as the closer. Bruney looked good at times with New York last season, and could get some save opportunities - especially if Capps struggles.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 12/7, 12:23 PM CT
Despite rumors that he was likely to be on his way to Atlanta, Brian Bruney has apparently been traded from the Yankees to the Nationals, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Our View: Talk about a change in team atmosphere for Bruney. No word yet on what the Yankees will get in return, but you can expect it to be a mid-level prospect to be named later. Expect Bruney to serve as one of Washington's setup men, and he could potentially challenge Mike MacDougal for the closing gig if he can regain his dominant form of 2008.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 12/7, 8:47 AM CT
Brian Bruney could soon be on his way to the Braves, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Yankees would likely be getting prospects in return. Bruney suffered from elbow problems last season and wasn't all that effective when healthy, though he has the stuff to potentially be an excellent setup man if he can regain his form from 2008.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 10/28, 11:00 AM CT
ESPN is reporting that the Yankees have added relief pitcher Brian Bruney to their World Series roster. Bruney will take the spot of reserve catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Our View: Bruney was having an excellent season for the Yankees before being injured early on, and he never fully bounced back after returning. He finished the year with a 3.92 ERA in 39 innings pitched, and he managed to strike out 36 in that time. He will add some more depth to the bullpen for the Yanks.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 6/26, 8:32 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, Yankees' relever Brian Bruney has smoothed over his argument with Mets' closer Francisco Rodriguez by sending a clubhouse attendant to apologize. Bruney and K-Rod had to be seperated before a game in the last Subway Series.

Our View: Bruney had been running his mouth about K-Rod, and apparently neither pitcher is too fond of the other. With another series between the two coming up, it looks like Bruney has made amends with the Mets' closer. Don't expect any fireworks before these games between the two.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/16, 4:17 PM CT
Brian Bruney has been activated from the DL following his recovery from a strained right elbow, according to TSN. Jose Veras was designated for assignment as the adjoining move.

Our View: The Yankees will be pleased to get Bruney back in their bullpen as he holds a solid 0.56 WHIP. But he only holds fantasy value in deeper leagues that feature middle men.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 6/15, 10:27 AM CT
The New York Times reports that reliever Brian Bruney apologized on Sunday for degrading comments made towards Francisco Rodriguez earlier in the weekend. Bruney and Rodriguez had to be separated in the outfield prior to Sunday's game.

Our View: Bruney is clearly not a fan of K-Rod's, but his lack of a track record suggests that he shouldn't really be saying anything about the Mets closer. It is good to see him step up and apologize for calling K-Rod a "tired act." Once healthy, Bruney could factor into the Yankees bullpen as a possible setup option for Mariano Rivera.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 6/13, 9:22 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, Yankees' reliever Brian Bruney is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment in Double-A Trenton on Saturday. Bruney is expected to rejoin the team next week barring any setbacks.

Our View: Bruney should throw an inning today, and if all goes well he should be back in the Yanks' pen later this week. He will be a nice added piece to the Yankees' bullpen, and leagues that count holds should give him a hard look.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 6/12, 9:34 AM CT
Newsday is reporting that Yankees' pitcher Brian Bruney threw 25 pitches to live hitters on Thursday and felt no pain. "I pretty much let those pitches go as much as I could for not being in a game," Bruney said. "That's all I got right there so I thought I looked pretty good. Threw the pitches where I wanted to." Bruney is expected to begin his rehab assignment either Friday or Saturday.

Our View: Bruney seems to be recovering nicely, and he has not reported any problems since he started throwing again. If he starts his rehab assignment this weekend, he could be back with the team at some point next week. Bruney has been one of the best Yankee relievers this season when healthy, so the team could really use him back in the bullpen. He could be a nice option in leagues that count holds when he returns.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 6/10, 11:06 AM CT
The New York Daily News reports that Brian Bruney threw without pain on Tuesday and could return to the team next week.

Our View: Bruney has been solid for the Yankees in 2009, compiling a 3.00 ERA and 13-2 strikeouts to walks ratio. He is not a viable fantasy option in any format, however.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/9, 8:44 AM CT
According to the New York Daily News, Yankees' pitcher Brian Bruney is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday in which he will throw breaking balls for the first time since he was placed on the DL on May 26.

Our View: This is another step in the right direction for Bruney, who threw a 30-pitch session on Sunday and reported no pain. Assuming he continues to progress, he should be back in the Yankees' bullpen in the next few weeks. He still has a ways to go, but all news is encouraging at this point.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSunday 6/7, 1:10 PM CT
Brian Bruney, who has been recovering from a strained right elbow, felt fine after throwing a bullpen session Sunday, according to MLB.com. Bruney threw 15 pitches, took a four-minute break, then fired another 15. Bruney threw mostly all fastballs and he said, "It went excellent - no pain. It was a huge positive step for us."

Our View: His arm strength has not fully returned, but his pitching speed is fine. This is encouraging news, but there remains no set timetable for his return to the Yankees' bullpen.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 6/6, 1:35 PM CT
According to MLB.com, reliever Brian Bruney will throw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Sunday to test his strained right elbow.

Our View: Bruney felt good after his 20-pitch session on Friday and says he'll be back with the team in less than two weeks. The Yanks' bullpen will get a nice boost when he returns, assuming he can stay healthy.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 6/5, 7:51 PM CT
Brian Bruney is improving in his recovery from a strained right elbow, according to the Star-Ledger. He threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday, and did not experience any pain.

Our View: Bruney believes he may be able to return to the Yankees' bullpen soon, potentially in a week and a half or less. Bruney is worth stashing in deeper leagues that award points for holds.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 6/2, 8:33 AM CT
The Journal News is reporting that Yankees' reliever Brian Bruney is scheduled to begin a throwing program on Tuesday. Bruney is recovering from a strained right elbow, and he expects to be back with the Yankees within the next few weeks.

Our View: After being given a clean bill of health by Dr. James Andrews, Bruney is expected to start on his throwing program today. Good sign for the Yankees, and expect Bruney to be back in the bullpen in the coming weeks. He could still be an option in leagues that count holds upon his return.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 5/27, 6:08 PM CT
Updating a previous report, a visit with Dr. James Andrews confirmed that Yankees' reliever Brian Bruney does not have any structural damage in his right elbow, according to the New York Post. Bruney is expected to only need rest and strengthening to rehab his injury.

Our View: This is good news for Bruney and the Yankees. Expect him to return in the near future, and when he comes back he will once again be an option in leagues that count holds. If he can stay healthy, he is a solid holds option on a team that should get its share of wins.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/26, 10:53 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, Brian Bruney will visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama Wednesday to examine his strained right elbow, according to the New York Daily News.

Our View: An MRI revealed no structural damage in his elbow, but was sent back to the 15-day DL as he is still experiencing pain. Stay tuned for further updates regarding the ailing setup man.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 5/26, 7:28 AM CT
As expected, Brian Bruney was sent back to the 15-day DL with a strained right elbow, according to TSN.

Our View: Bruney held a 0.56 WHIP over nine innings of relief, with 13 strikeouts. The setup man is only worth holding onto in deeper fantasy leagues that reward points for holds.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/25, 1:06 PM CT
Brian Bruney is headed back to the DL as he is continuing to experience pain in his right elbow, according to MLB.com. He was previously on the DL with a strained flexor muscle in the elbow.

Our View: Bruney was pitching well as the Yankees' setup man as he only allowed three earned runs and three hits over nine innings, but will only be missed in deeper fantasy leagues that reward points for holds.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 5/22, 6:16 PM CT
The AP reports that Brian Bruney is once again sidelined with a sore elbow. He had just recently been activated from the DL, but has logged just one inning for the Yankees since then. Tests did not reveal any structural damage. He is not believed to be available until Monday at the earliest.

Our View: Bruney could be of some value in leagues that award holds, but he has been constantly hurt this season. He's probably not worth holding onto until he proves he can pitch in consecutive games.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/18, 7:24 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Brian Bruney has been called up from his Triple-A rehab assignment and will be available to pitch out of the Yankees bullpen on Tuesday. Bruney has not played since April 21 due to a strained flexor muscle in his elbow that he says was injured because of a video replay delay.

Our View: There's a good chance that he returns to the eighth inning role that he held prior to the injury. As long as he is healthy, he could be a factor in fantasy leagues that reward holds.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/18, 6:45 PM CT
The AP reports that pitcher Brian Bruney is blaming an eight and a half minute video review of an April 19 home run for a strained flexor muscle in his elbow that landed him on the DL on April 25. Bruney had been warming up prior to the review and entered the game following it's conclusion. He fired several verbal shots at MLB and the umpires in his statement.

Our View: Sounds like someone is looking for an excuse. Bruney could return to the Yankees bullpen any day now, but if an eight minute delay is going to cause him to land on the DL for a month than he's probably too fragile to roster on your squad.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/18, 4:19 PM CT
The New York Daily News reports that Brian Bruney could be back in the bullpen "as early as tomorrow." He did allow a run in his only inning of work during his last time out at the Triple-A.

Our View: Bruney was an effective part of the Yankees bullpen prior to being shutdown on April 25 with elbow soreness. If your league rewards holds, he could be a strong performer in that role.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSunday 5/17, 1:30 PM CT
Brian Bruney has been sent down to Triple-A by the Yankees, according to TSN.

Our View: Bruney fired 12 strikeouts over eight innings of relief, with a 0.63 WHIP. His fantasy value was limited to deeper leagues that feature middle men however.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 5/16, 10:58 AM CT
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney will pitch one inning of relief on Sunday in a Triple-A rehab appearance and, barring any setbacks, could be back with the team as early as Tuesday.

Our View: Bruney has been very effective this season with 12 Ks in just eight innings and an impressive 0.62 WHIP. The Yanks' pen would get a big boost if he could return on schedule. As a middle reliever he has little to no fantasy value though.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsThursday 5/14, 12:06 PM CT
Brian Bruney could be activated from the DL at some point next week, according to the Journal News.

Our View: He is recovering from a strained right elbow, and was able to throw 25 pitches (all fastballs) during a side session Wednesday. Bruney will provide a boost to the Yankees' bullpen upon his return, as he fired 12 strikeouts over eight innings with a 0.62 WHIP. But his fantasy value will be limited to leagues that feature middle relievers.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 5/11, 7:13 AM CT
Brian Bruney, who is recovering from a strained right elbow, played catch from 60 feet, according to the Star-Ledger. He is expected to play catch from 90 feet today, and also play long-toss.

Our View: Bruney was pitching well with a 0.62 WHIP and 12 strikeouts over eight innings of work, and will provide a boost to the Yankees' bullpen when ready to return, but he only holds fantasy value in deeper leagues that feature middle men.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 5/6, 7:58 PM CT
Brian Bruney (elbow) won't rush his recovery after suffering a setback on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. Bruney will be out for another two weeks after feeling pain in his elbow while throwing this weekend.

Our View: The Yankees will have to make due with arms like Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez and Jonathan Albaladejo until Bruney is ready to return. Continue to reserve Bruney in AL-only leagues as he fared quite well in the early going (13.50 K/9, 0.63 WHIP).
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 4/25, 4:36 PM CT
The AP reports that the Yankees placed reliever Brian Bruney on the DL on Saturday. He flew to New York earlier in the day to have his elbow examined.

Our View: Bruney has been one of the better relievers for the Yankees in the early going. He had already picked up two wins while posting a 3.38 ERA and 0.63 WHIP. He also had 12 strikeouts against just two walks in eight innings of work.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 1/30, 2:28 PM CT
The Yankees have avoided salary arbitration with Brian Bruney by signing the hurler to a one-year deal worth $1.25 million, according to LoHud.com.

Our View: Bruney held a 0.99 WHIP over 34.1 innings last season with New York, and could hold nice value in 2009 for deeper leagues that feature middle men.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 8/1, 4:44 PM CT
Brian Bruney was activated from the 60-day DL on while the team demoted Chris Britton to clear roster space, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Bruney was on the DL with a torn ligament in his foot and hasn't pitched in the majors since April 22nd. Bruney could end up filling a substantial role with the recent loss of Kyle Farnsworth, but he hasn't exactly impressed of late in the minors.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 8/1, 8:00 AM CT
The New York Yankees have not recalled reliever Brian Bruney from the minor leagues because he has not demonstrated good control, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Bruney was throwing well before injuring a ligament in his right foot. In 11.1 innings, he had 12 strikeouts and a 1.59 ERA.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 7/21, 10:08 PM CT
Brian Bruney will work in back-to-back games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this week, the AP notes. The reliever is on the DL due to a torn ligament in his right foot.

Our View: This should be a huge step for the setup man. Bruney has the stuff to be a pretty good seventh-inning arm, although he often battles control issues.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 7/4, 2:03 PM CT
Brian Bruney went two innings, giving up two hits and one run in a rehab appearance, according to the Associated Press. "My arm felt great, so I'm excited," he said.

Our View: Bruney was good in relief this year, and though he doesn't hold much value in traditional fantasy formats, he may accumulate some holds when he comes back.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsThursday 6/19, 2:08 PM CT
Brian Bruney, who is recovering from a torn ligament in his left foot, remains optimistic he could return to the Yankees in late July, according to Pinstripe-Alley.com. But he first needs to get into a rhythm of throwing every other day, and then getting in some work in rehab games.

Our View: Late July to early August seems an accurate estimation for his return. He will help the Yankees pen upon his return, but will hold little fantasy value as a middle-reliever.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 4/25, 4:43 PM CT
The Yankees placed reliever Brian Bruney on the disabled list with a lisfranc injury, according to the New York Post.

Our View: Reliever Chris Britton has replaced Bruney on the 25-man roster.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsThursday 4/24, 8:37 PM CT
Brian Bruney might have to go on the DL because of a sprained foot that has him in a protective boot, according to MLB.com. Bruney injured the foot on Tuesday when he was covering first base and slipped.

Our View: Bruney has been a wonder this season with 12 K and a 1.59 ERA through 11.1 innings, but it sure sounds like he will need to spend some time on the DL which will force LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth to pick up their games.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 3/28, 10:12 PM CT
Brian Bruney made the Yankees' opening day roster, according to the AP. Bruney struggled in '07 after a nice '06 campaign. He won't have any fantasy value.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsWednesday 2/27, 10:19 AM CT
Brian Bruney really took care of himself over the winter and hopes it will translate to success on the field. The reliever lost 20 pounds during the offseason with a conditioning program of daily workouts, no alcohol, a strict diet and plenty of sleep. He also has a better relationship with new manager Joe Girardi than he had with Joe Torre. "With Torre - and I'm not trying to bad-mouth anybody - sometimes you would go out there and try to be so good because you were scared of doing bad," Bruney said in the New York Daily News. "You can't pitch like that. (Joe) Girardi understands that you make mistakes - and I'm going to make them." Bruney should win a spot in the pen but will have to cut down on his walks (6.66 BB/9 last year) to be successful.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsTuesday 2/5, 2:48 PM CT
The Yankees signed Brian Bruney to a one-year, $725,000 deal Tuesday, avoiding arbitration with the right-hander. Bruney was good for the Yanks in '06 but struggled for them last year, posting a 4.68 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and woeful 39/37 K/BB ratio over 50 innings.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSaturday 8/25, 8:00 AM CT
The Yankees recalled Brian Bruney from Triple-A Scranton on Friday. He posted a 3.40 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 50 appearances before being sent down earlier this month.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsFriday 3/30, 10:31 AM CT
Brian Bruney has pitched well enough in recent outings to secure a place in the Yankees bullpen, according to the Westchester Journal-News. Joe Torre is expected to finalize his roster Friday. Bruney has allowed three runs over seven innings of work, along with a whopping 14 strikeouts.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsMonday 2/26, 9:34 AM CT
Brian Bruney will miss four to five days due to what Yankees manager Joe Torre called a "left-side problem," according to the New York Daily News. "There's not much you can do about it," he said. "It's not something serious, but if you don't shut him down, it's probably going to hang on."
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsSunday 8/20, 8:21 AM CT
Brian Bruney was sent back down to Triple-A Columbus by the Yankees on Saturday, according to the New York Daily News. In two appearances with the Yankees this week, he allowed no runs and two hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Brian Bruney, P, Washington NationalsThursday 8/17, 12:12 PM CT
The Yankees called up Brian Bruney from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, according to the AP. Bruney has struggled this season while bouncing around between the Diamondbacks and Yankees organizations, posting a 7.36 ERA in 20 2/3 IP. However, he has pitched well of late, posting a 3.14 ERA in his last 11 appearacnes with Columbuus. Bruney will be sent down when Cory Lidle returns from the bereavement list.
