Pedro Feliciano, P, New York MetsWednesday 9/16, 10:06 AM CT
Pedro Feliciano wants to sign a contract extension with the Mets, according to the New York Daily News. Feliciano has pitched 55.1 innings for the team this season and has a 3.09 ERA to go along with his 55 strikeouts.

Our View: Feliciano has been one of the more consistent relievers over the last few seasons, and it would be wise for the Mets to keep him in town for next season. He is very good against lefties, and he is set to break his own franchise mark for relief appearances in a season.

The Mets have avoided salary arbitration with Pedro Feliciano by signing the reliever to a one-year deal for $1,612,500, according to Newsday.

Our View: The 32-year-old was one of the Mets' most reliable relievers last season, as he limited lefty batters to a .280 OBP and .295 slugging percentage. He only holds value in fantasy leagues that feature middle men though.

New York Mets reliever Pedro Feliciano is currently pitching in his native Puerto Rico for Leones de Ponce in an effort to help the team to the playoffs, the New York Observer reports. Feliciano's obligations to his home country will continue to spill over into this coming spring when he will pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. However, Leones pitching coach Ricky Bones, also an instructor with the Mets, is quick to guard against notions that Feliciano's offseason workload will adversely affect him for the 2009 major league season. "I make sure that all the pitchers follow the same program and development that they would with the big league clubs," Bones said. "That means no pitching on back-to-back days if possible, and no more than 20-25 pitches per outing (for Feliciano)."

Our View: Perhaps the extra work will be beneficial for Feliciano, who is more than just your average lefty specialist. After holding right-handed batters to a .221 average in 2007, Feliciano surrendered a .357 mark to such hitters in 2008.

It was puzzling as to why Pedro Feliciano didn't pitch in Tuesday's game in the middle innings when the Mets needed him, and now we know the reason. The lefty specialist didn't arrive at Shea Stadium until the seventh inning. He had been back home in Puerto Rico dealing with what he called "family issues" and had his original flight canceled, according to MLB.com. Feliciano said the issue was resolved, so he it appears he'll be available going forward.

Pedro Feliciano signed a one-year contract with the Mets on Friday that will pay him $1.025 million, according to the New York Daily News. He avoided going to salary arbitration by inking the deal, though the Mets still have Oliver Perez, Jorge Sosa, and Ryan Church available for arbitration at this point. Feliciano had a 3.09 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and struck out 61 batters in 64 IP last season.
