David Wells, P, Friday 1/23, 12:05 PM CT
David Wells never filed retirement papers and would consider a minor league deal if offered, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.

Our View: The 45-year-old hurler is not likely going to make a favorable fantasy impact if he returns to the majors at some point in 2009.
David Wells, P, Friday 5/9, 8:57 AM CT
Free agent lefty David Wells said he wants to join the Yankees, according to FanNation. He will turn 45 in 11 days, but stated that he has been working out near his home in San Diego and believes he could balance a New York rotation, suddenly besieged by question marks.

Our View: Hank Steinbrenner noted that Wells has crossed his mind as a possibility for the Yankees' rotation. Wells went 9-9 over 29 starts in 2007, with a 5.43 ERA and poor 1.54 WHIP. He only registered 82 strikeouts over 157.1 innings as well. He won't likely help fantasy rotations that much, but you know the Yankees will provide solid run support for him to nail down wins.
David Wells, P, Monday 2/25, 9:31 AM CT
David Wells' agent recently called the Cardinals front office to see whether the team was interested in adding the veteran to an unsettled rotation. Wells, 44, has been working out and would like to pitch another season after going 4-1 with a 4.65 ERA in seven starts for the Dodgers at the end of last season, according to the St. Louis Dispatch. "He'd like to continue his career and felt that he would be a perfect stopgap for them as they got their guys healthy and ready," said agent Gregg Clifton. The Cardinals could find short term use from the veteran left, but much of their "need" won't be known until late March when player personnel and injuries are sorted out.

A hearing had been scheduled for Thursday, but there was concern he might end up missing two starts if he followed through with the appeal. Now, he will miss just one start.
David Wells, P, Wednesday 8/29, 10:29 AM CT
David Wells will have his next start pushed up to Friday to stay on four days' rest, according to the LA Times. Eric Stults' spot in the rotation will be skipped. Wells was solid in his first start for the Dodgers on Sunday, although there's still not a whole lot to like here fantasy-wise.

David Wells has made his last start for the Padres this year, and he may have made the last start of his career. The 44-year-old will not make his scheduled start Saturday, and he will either be designated for assignment or simply retire, according to MLB.com. We put it in Boomer's hands to decide what he's going to do." Wells held a 14.04 ERA over his last four starts and a 5.54 ERA overall on the year. The Pads have not decided on a replacement for Saturday yet, but Wil Ledezma is the most likely candidate.
David Wells, P, Wednesday 8/8, 11:54 AM CT
Whether or not David Wells is released could depend on how Chris Young and Justin Germano, both coming off injuries, look in their next starts. If either suffers a setback, it could make it hard to release the struggling Wells, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Wells' next scheduled start is Saturday. Wil Ledezma would be a candidate to start if Wells is released before then.
