Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesMonday 1/4, 1:49 PM CT
The Pirates signed free agent pitchers Neal Cotts, Brian Burres and Tyler Yates to minor league contracts on Monday.

Our View: Cotts "headlines" the group, but after posting a 7.36 ERA in 11 innings for the Cubs last season, faces an uphill battle to make the team (yes, even the Pirates).

The Chicago Cubs have non-tendered reliever Neal Cotts.

Our View: Cotts is coming off of a season that saw him allow nine runs in only 11 innings pitched, and will have some work to do to get back on a major league roster in 2010.

Neal Cotts underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Cotts had only pitched 11 innings in 2009, and posted an abysmal 7.36 ERA in the process. He had been at Triple-A Iowa since May. It should be a long road recovery for the veteran lefty, and you shouldn't expect him to be making fantasy contributions again for a long time, if ever.

Neal Cotts has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs, according to ESPN.

Our View: Cotts fared well as a setup man with the White Sox during their World Series run in 2005, but struggled with the Cubs this season with a 7.36 ERA over 11 innings of work. The lefty specialist won't be missed in fantasy leagues.

Neal Cotts threw another shutout inning as the Cubs beat the Mariners 9-2 on Thursday. He struck out one, while allowing no hits or walks.

Our View: Cotts has given up just three hits and no runs in 6.2 innings of work this spring. The lefty has been unreliable in recent seasons, but he could prove to be an instrumental part of the Cubs success this season.
Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 12/12, 6:11 PM CT
Neal Cotts signed a one-year deal with the Cubs on Friday reportedly worth $1.1 million, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Cotts shouldn't have much fantasy value in 2009, as he'll likely pitch in middle relief. He pitched 35.2 innings in 50 appearances with a 4.29 ERA.
Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 5/29, 5:18 PM CT
Neal Cotts was recalled on Thursday to join the Cubs, according to the Miami Herald. To make room on the roster, Jose Ascanio was sent down.

Our View: Cotts had a rough 2007 season, but he has looked very good at Triple-A this year with a 2.00 ERA and three saves in 19 appearances with Iowa. He figures to be nothing more than another arm in the Cubs bullpen with little fantasy value.
Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesFriday 3/21, 2:53 PM CT
The Cubs optioned Neal Cotts to Triple-A Iowa Friday, according to the Daily Herald. With Cotts being sent down, it looks like the Northsiders will be going with one lefty (Scott Eyre) in the bullpen, though it's possible Carmen Pignatiello could sneak in and and earn a job.
Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesThursday 12/13, 11:10 AM CT
The Cubs avoided arbitration with Neal Cotts by inking him to a one-year deal Thursday. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Cotts split his 2007 season between Triple-A and the big leagues, holding a 4.86 ERA in 16 games with the Cubs and a 4.83 ERA in 24 games with Iowa.
Neal Cotts, P, Pittsburgh PiratesSunday 11/19, 10:22 AM CT
The Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have not ruled out the possibility that Neal Cotts could start next season. Cotts was a starter for most of his minor league career.

The Cubs acquired Neal Cotts from the White Sox Thursday in exchange for David Aardsma and minor league pitcher Carlos Vasquez, according to the AP. Cotts posted a 5.17 ERA in 70 games with the White Sox in 2006, one year removed from his dominant 2005 campaign in which he held a 1.94 ERA in 69 appearances.
