Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 10/4, 12:06 AM CT
Matt Cain lasted just five innings in his final regular season start on Saturday. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk and struck out five in the 2-0 loss to the Padres.

Our View: Cain fell to 14-8 with the loss and has now lost four of his last five decisions. He was a Cy Young candidate before he imploded in September with a 5.22 ERA.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/27, 7:55 PM CT
Matt Cain was brilliant on Sunday against the Cubs, tossing eight scoreless innings in which he surrendered just three hits and two walks. He fanned eight and improved to 14-7 on the season with the 5-1 win.

Our View: Cain needed a solid start to rebound after his last outing that marked his worst effort of the season. He failed to earn a quality start in four of his previous five outings, but Sunday's effort reminded owners just how dominant he's been for the majority of the season.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 9/23, 12:02 AM CT
Matt Cain had his worst outing of the season on Tuesday against Arizona. He was tagged for seven runs on eight hits before being pulled after just 2.1 innings.

Our View: Cain fell to 13-7 after a 10-8 loss and saw his ERA climb from 2.71 to 2.99. Any lingering hopes of a Cy Young award vanished after Tuesday's drubbing.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/17, 12:27 AM CT
Matt Cain got out-dueled by Jorge De La Rosa in a playoff-like atmosphere on Wednesday night. The Giants' co-ace allowed four runs in six innings, while the Rockies lefty pitched eight innings of shutout ball, as San Francisco lost 4-3 at home.

Our View: Cain, who has now allowed four runs in both of his past two starts, couldn't have picked a worse time of the season to slump. The Giants now find themselves three and a half games behind the Rockies for the National League wild card with just 16 games to go.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/12, 12:24 AM CT
Matt Cain gave up four earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Dodgers at AT&T Park. He had three walks with five strikeouts.

Our View: Cain surrendered four earned runs in two of his last three starts, and only collected one win over his last nine outings. He still carries a strong 2.61 ERA for 2009.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 9/5, 6:27 PM CT
Matt Cain only allowed two earned runs on four hits over seven innings in Saturday's 3-2 win at Milwaukee. He had two walks with five strikeouts.

Our View: Cain earned his 13th win, tying his season-high set back in 2006. He was winless over his previous seven starts, despite allowing two or less earned runs three times over that span.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/30, 9:03 PM CT
Matt Cain was not his usual brilliant self on Sunday. He allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks to the Rcokies, but the Giants mustered some late inning heroics from Edgar Renteria and won the game 9-5.

Our View: Cain didn't receive a decision, but managed to strike out eight in the game. He missed his season high total by one in Sunday's outing, which snapped a three game string of quality starts.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 8/20, 2:32 PM CT
Matt Cain was sharp once again on Thursday, but couldn't earn his 13th win of the season. He held the Reds to just one run on eight hits and a walk over eight frames, but the Giants eventually fell 2-1 in ten innings.

Our View: Cain lowered his ERA to a sparkling 2.43 after Thursday's performance and had easily his best start of the month. Despite his August struggles (4.84 coming into Thursday's start) he's still a top-five front runner for the NL Cy Young.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 8/15, 7:41 PM CT
Matt Cain gave up three earned runs on six hits over 7.1 innings in Saturday's 5-4 win at New York. He had no walks and two strikeouts.

Our View: Cain had a decent outing, but was handed a no-decision rather than a win. He needs one more win to tie his season-high of 13 set back in 2006.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/9, 6:58 PM CT
Matt Cain was rocked for five earned runs on seven hits over seven innings in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Reds at AT&T Park. He had two walks and racked up seven strikeouts.

Our View: Cain has lost in back-to-back starts, and has four losses for the season. He still co-leads the Giants with Tim Lincecum with 12 wins, and has a rock-solid 2.44 ERA. He should bounce back fine from today's disappointing outing.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 8/3, 10:14 PM CT
Matt Cain gave up four earned runs on eight hits over eight innings in Monday's 4-3 loss at Houston. He issued no walks with five strikeouts, and was tagged for two homers.

Our View: Cain only suffered his third loss of the season, and allowed one or less earned runs in each of his previous six starts. He remains tied with Tim Lincecum for the team lead with 12 wins.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/29, 5:41 PM CT
Matt Cain pitched nine dominating innings on Wednesday, allowing just three hits to a depleted Pirates lineup, but took a no-decision, as San Francisco couldn't score until the tenth inning of their 1-0 win.

Our View: If not for teammate Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain might be the most talked about pitcher in the National League this season. Expect more greatness going forward.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/24, 11:08 PM CT
Matt Cain only issued one earned run on three hits over seven innings in Friday's 3-1 win at Colorado. He had four walks and five strikeouts.

Our View: Cain is 3-0 over five starts this month, and is now currently tied for the MLB lead with 12 wins.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/19, 3:14 PM CT
Matt Cain won his team-leading 11th game on Sunday, as the Giants beat the Pirates 4-3 in Pittsburgh.

Our View: Cain was forced to leave his left start in just the sixth inning, and miss the All-Star game, after getting hit by a line drive. But he was back to normal on Sunday, striking out eight Pirates in seven innings while allowing just one run.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/17, 4:19 PM CT
According to the blog of Giants' beat writer Andrew Baggarly, Giants' All-Star starter Matt Cain threw a successful bullpen session on Thursday and he is scheduled to start for the team on Sunday. Cain missed the All-Star game with a bruised right elbow.

Our View: Cain said his arm responded well during the bullpen session, and he should be good to go Sunday. Fantasy owners should feel free to get him back in immediately, as he figures to pick right up where he left off in the first half.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/15, 8:37 AM CT
Matt Cain is still hopeful that he will be able to make his next scheduled start on Sunday, but might not depending on how a Thursday bullpen session goes, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: The injury still does not sound overly serious, so it is likely that Cain will start on Sunday. If not, it should be the only one he misses. Stay tuned, but be ready to have perhaps the league's best number two starter ready to go on Sunday in leagues with daily transactions.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 7/12, 2:43 PM CT
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Giants' pitcher Matt Cain believes he will be able to make his next scheduled start after the All-Star break. Cain left Saturday night's game after being hit with a line drive in his pitching arm.

Our View: Cain said he fells pretty good today, but he won't take a chance playing in the All-Star game. Expect him to be fine for his next start, and he should return to his first half form.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/11, 9:06 PM CT
Matt Cain exited tonight's battle with San Diego after getting struck by a line drive in his pitching arm during the second inning, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Cain, who has 10 wins this season, walked off the field in obvious pain. He was hit just above his right elbow, and the extent of the injury is yet to be determined.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/6, 11:47 PM CT
Matt Cain was his reliable self on Monday, improving to 10-2 after allowing one earned run (two total) off five hits and two walks with five strikeouts against Florida.

Our View: Cain's ERA dropped to 2.42 with the fine outing, and he continues to be one of the best fantasy starters in the entire MLB.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 7/1, 10:20 PM CT
Matt Cain was solid as usual on Wednesday night, going seven innings and allowing just one run, but the Giants again scored only one run for him, and the Cy Young candidate was forced to take a no decision in the Giants 2-1, ten inning loss.

Our View: Expect to see Cain in two weeks at the All-Star game in St. Louis and as a candidate for many year end awards.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/26, 10:11 PM CT
Matt Cain struggled in tonight's 5-1 loss at Milwaukee, as he was tagged for five earned runs on six hits over seven innings. He issued four walks and fired nine strikeouts.

Our View: Cain was only dealt his second loss of the season, and was not a total disappointment tonight with nine strikeouts. He continues to lead the Giants with nine wins and carries a solid 2.57 ERA, and he should bounce back fine.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/20, 11:53 PM CT
Matt Cain continued his excellent 2009 season on Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision as the Giants beat the Rangers 2-1 in 11 innings. Cain went eight innings and allowed one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight.

Our View: Cain has really come into his own this season, and he should be viewed as a top pitching option in all fantasy leagues. He strikes guys out and wins games, which is exactly what fantasy pitchers are supposed to do.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 6/14, 11:29 PM CT
Matt Cain was stellar on Sunday in the Giants' 7-1 win over the A's. Cain pitched a complete game and allowed one run on four hits while striking out nine.

Our View: Cain was masterful today, and this is what people have expected Cain to do all season. He is having a very good 2009 campaign, and he remains a strong play in all leagues.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 6/10, 12:35 AM CT
Matt Cain gave up four earned runs on six hits over 6.1 innings in Tuesday's 9-4 win at Arizona. He had five walks with six strikeouts.

Our View: It was a sloppy outing for Cain, but he ended up claiming his eighth win of the season due to strong run support from his teammates. He has won five straight starts, and only suffered one loss all season.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/4, 11:11 PM CT
Matt Cain was in command as he only surrendered one earned run on five hits over five innings in Thursday's 4-1 win at Washington in the nightcap of their doubleheader. He had two walks and seven strikeouts. The game was called in the sixth inning due to rain.

Our View: Cain has now won four straight starts, and has allowed one or less earned runs in each outing over that span. He is currently tied for the NL-lead with seven wins.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/30, 12:11 AM CT
Matt Cain was very good on Friday night against the Cardinals. He allowed just one earned run on six hits and two walks over 6.1 innings and improved to 6-1 on the season as the Giants' doubled up St. Louis 4-2.

Our View: Cain took advantage of a slumping Cardinal lineup and his bullpen held on for the win. His ERA now sits at 2.31 and while he hasn't struck out many hitters this season (46) he still remains one of the better options as far as fantasy starters go.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/25, 8:28 AM CT
Updating an earlier report, an undisclosed high-level source is shooting down the rumor that the Giants are shopping hurler Matt Cain, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: Cain is under contract through 2011, and is pitching very well so far with a 5-1 record and a 2.40 ERA. It would not make sense for the Giants to deal one of their top pitchers this early in the pennant race.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 5/25, 7:10 AM CT
Matt Cain is believed to be on the Giants' trading block, according to the Mercury News.

Our View: The Giants covet a bat, and Nick Johnson of the Nationals is reportedly high on their list. Cain is currently 5-1 with a solid 2.40 ERA over nine starts, but his fantasy stock could take a hit if he is dealt, depending on where he lands. Washington has the worst record in the majors at 13-30, and Cain and his fantasy owners should cross their fingers that the Giants don't deal him for Johnson.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/17, 10:11 PM CT
Matt Cain used 119 pitches to shutout the Mets over six innings in Sunday's 2-0 win. He allowed just three hits, but walked five while striking out two. Cain helped himself out at the dish as he was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk.

Our View: Cain's strike out rate is down this season, but he is getting the job done regardless. Tonight's win improves him to 4-1 and his ERA is down to 2.65. He has not lasted more than seven innings in any of his eight starts, but he has gone at least six in each of them.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/7, 5:26 PM CT
Matt Cain threw much better on Thursday as the Giants beat the Rockies 8-3. Cain went six shutout innings and allowed only one hit while walking five and striking out seven.

Our View: Cain was very good today despite the five walks. He only let up one hit, so he had his good stuff today. Cain is a very good pitcher and his fantasy value is very high in all leagues.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 5/2, 5:46 PM CT
Matt Cain surrendered five earned runs on seven hits over six innings in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Rockies at AT&T Park. He issued four walks with three strikeouts.

Our View: He gave up three home runs after only giving up two over his previous four starts. He was dealt his first loss of the season as well.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 4/26, 9:10 PM CT
Matt Cain has a great start on Sunday, but his bullpen coughed up the lead and he was denied a win. He was certainly worthy though with a seven innings of one run ball where he scattered four hits and four walks.

Our View: Cain now has a 2.08 ERA on the season and looks like the rest of the Giants' rotation... impressive. The ERA is great, but his WHIP is a bit high and the K-rate is a bit low, so an inflation may be looming.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 4/9, 10:06 PM CT
Matt Cain pitched impressively in his season debut against the Brewers on Thursday evening. He allowed all of one run and four hits in seven innings to lead the Giants to a 7-1 win.

Our View: Cain could very well be headed for a breakout campaign and prepared to form a deadly one-two punch with Tim Lincecum. He recorded five strikeouts and needed only 90 pitches (61 strikes) to complete his seven-inning outing.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/4, 11:03 PM CT
Matt Cain struck out six in four innings as the Giants fell to the A's 3-2 on Sunday. He allowed just two hits, but walked four and allowed one earned run in the abbreviated outing.

Our View: Cain posted a respectable 7.69 K/9 last season, and he has the potential to do even better. He was the victim of a lot of bad luck last season, which led to an 8-14 record, but the Giants offense is improving and that record could be reversed in 2009.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/30, 8:09 PM CT
Matt Cain tossed seven innings in the Giants 7-5 loss to the Rangers on Monday. He allowed four hits, including two home runs, four runs, and a walk while striking out eight.

Our View: Yes, Cain can certainly rack up strikeouts but keep in mind that he has more than 650 major league innings on his 24-year-old arm. Cain has had a rough spring, and you shouldn't be over confident in his ability to make another 34 starts in 2009.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 3/24, 7:59 PM CT
Matt Cain held the Diamondbacks to two runs over five innings on Tuesday. He allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out five. Cain saw his spring ERA fall to 5.33.

Our View: The 24-year-old right-hander has had a rough spring training, but we're not panicking. He does have 25 whiffs over 26.1 innings and have hopes that he'll turn it up once the real games start.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/19, 6:30 PM CT
Matt Cain was roughed up again in his fifth start this spring. In 5.2 innings he allowed five hits, four earned runs, three walks and two home runs, while striking out two. The Giants did end up beating the White Sox 6-4.

Our View: In 14.2 innings this spring, Cain has given up 19 hits and walked six. That has led to 12 earned runs. While some are hoping for a breakout this season from Cain, they may have to wait another year if this spring is any indication of what he'll have to offer in the regular season.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 3/14, 8:19 PM CT
Matt Cain struck out seven hitters in 4.1 innings, but he also allowed seven hits, five runs, and two walks in the Giants 8-4 loss to the Padres.

Our View: It's one thing to get hit hard in spring training, but it's still rather humbling when the beating comes at the hands of the Padres. Cain is carrying a 7.59 ERA this spring.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 3/7, 8:16 PM CT
Matt Cain was solid against the Rockies on Saturday, failing to give up a run off three hits while striking out three in three innings of work.

Our View: And who would have guessed it, but the Giants' offense went without a run in Cain's three innings. Cain's value has been hurt much more by a lack of run support the past few seasons that by his own effectiveness.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 3/2, 7:22 PM CT
Matt Cain gave up three earned runs in 1.2 innings as the Giants fell to the Royals on Monday. He gave up five hits and a walk, while striking out two hitters.

Our View: He has now given up four runs and six hits in 3.1 innings this spring. Cain is a lock for the rotation and he should be able to shake off this poor start to his spring. Perhaps he's still bitter about receiving just 3.1 runs in support last season which led to a 8-14 record despite a 3.76 ERA.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 2/26, 8:03 PM CT
Matt Cain allowed an earned run in an inning and two-thirds Thursday and was the losing pitcher in San Francisco's 16-7 loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: The 24-year-old Cain is expected to provide the Giants with a solid No. 2 starter behind ace Tim Lincecum. The presence of veteran Randy Johnson figures to help in Cain's development.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 2/9, 7:23 AM CT
The Giants will be focusing on the 24-year-old Matt Cain in 2009, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: He pitched 417 innings over the last two seasons, with a 3.71 ERA over the span. The Giants have been unwilling to listen to trade proposals for Cain, but the club is yet to decide where his future lies in their rotation. He is eligible for free agency in 2011. As a fantasy prospect, he ranks in the top-35.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 12/3, 6:09 PM CT
If the Giants were to sign C.C. Sabathia, the untouchable tag might be removed from Matt Cain, according to ESPN.

Our View: The Braves were previously rumored to be interested in Cain and still could have interest as their rotation has many questions with Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine all having injury problems and Mike Hampton leaving for Houston. Therefore, it's unlikely that the Braves' acquisition of Javier Vasquez would lower their interest in Cain.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 11/11, 5:28 PM CT
If the Braves don't end up trading for Jake Peavy, they could turn their attention to Matt Cain, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's David O'Brien suggests. Atlanta is viewed as the favorites for Peavy, but they are also reportedly growing impatient with the Padres.

Our View: Giants GM Brian Sabean said recently that Cain is untouchable, but we all know that's never really the case. That said, it does seem like a longshot he would be dealt to Hotlanta.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 11/6, 7:02 AM CT
The Giants have indicated that Matt Cain is not available on the trade market, according to the SF Chronicle. When GM Brian Sabean was asked if Cain is untouchable, Sabean answered, "Yes. Clubs know that. That hasn't necessarily discouraged clubs from inquiring or making suggestions of offers. But we don't see anything out there that gives us a net gain by losing him."

Our View: Sabean is still looking for offensive and pitching help, but Cain is not a trading chip.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 9/30, 4:48 PM CT
Despite rumors that the club might move him to attain a power hitter, Matt Cain isn't going anywhere, according to The Mercury News. "Matty, at 23, pitched like a Cy Young at times," GM Brian Sabean said "I don't think it'll take trading Matt Cain to get something done."

Our View: The Giants were tempted to move Tim Lincecum last off-season for a hitter (Alex Rios) and also resisted the urge to add a bat that way. Cain had his second straight solid season (3.76 ERA, 186 K) despite a poor record (8-14), and he appears to still have the full support of the Giants front office.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/21, 7:48 PM CT
Matt Cain threw six shutout innings on Sunday against the Dodgers though he left the game with a no-decision as the Giants failed to score against Derk Lowe.

Our View: Cain has allowed just two runs in his last two starts leading to a 1.38 ERA, but his record is 0-1. Whenever Cain takes the hill the Giants will not score, you can almost bank on it. Perhaps the U.S. government should invest in that position if they are looking for something stable for investments.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 9/21, 8:40 AM CT
Giants pitcher Matt Cain will attempt to get his first career win against the Los Angeles Dodgers when he toes the rubber against them Sunday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Our View: With the team's being division rivals, you would expect Cain to have at least one win. But in four starts against them this season, Cain is 0-2 with a 3.51 ERA.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 9/16, 10:57 PM CT
Matt Cain has gotten used to being a tough luck loser the last couple years, and he was yet again Tuesday. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out seven over seven innings, but he was bested by Dan Haren, who twirled a shutout.

Our View: Cain falls to 8-13 with the loss.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 9/11, 11:46 PM CT
Matt Cain was awful on Thursday night as he was pounded for five runs in the first inning and six runs overall in just 3.1 innings against the Padres. With the loss, Cain fell to 8-12.

Our View: Cain just didn't have much life or location on this night as he gave up two home runs on the night. This was also the third straight outing of four or fewer strikeouts, he had three, and in fact he hasn't struck out more than five in seven starts. Perhaps all those innings (197.2) are catching up to him as he has allowed 16 runs over his last three starts (9.00 ERA).
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/31, 2:46 PM CT
Matt Cain did not pitch well for San Francisco, going only five innings and walking five while surrendering five earned runs in the Giants 9-3 loss to the Reds.

Our View: Cain had thrown fairly well in August, and his ERA is still a respectable 3.69, but his lack of wins and relative wildness are beginning to hurt. He walked at least four batters in every August outing except one.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/17, 7:35 AM CT
Matt Cain has gone 13 starts without allowing a home run, according to the SF Chronicle. That marks the longest streak in the majors since Tim Hudson's 13-game homerless streak in 2004.

Our View: Cain is also 2-0 over his last three starts, with only one earned run allowed in both wins. He is 8-9, but would have a better record if given adequate run support.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 8/15, 10:23 PM CT
Matt Cain silenced the Braves' bats Friday, holding them to one run on six hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings.

Our View: Cain has a nifty 3.57 ERA with 153 Ks in 169 innings despite an 8-9 record.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 8/10, 6:42 PM CT
Matt Cain wasn't spectacular, but he gave his squad a chance to win by throwing seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four.

Our View: Cain does not have a big win total, but he strikes people out and has a good ERA and WHIP, making him a nice contributor to fantasy teams.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 8/5, 12:01 AM CT
Matt Cain walked five batters, but he only allowed one run in six innings as San Francisco beat Atlanta 4-2.

Our View: Despite Cain having just seven wins, he should be a mixed league performer with his stellar strikeout rate, ERA and WHIP.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/24, 4:56 PM CT
Matt Cain threw a complete game shutout in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Nationals. He only surrendered four hits in his masterpiece, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: That marks his first complete game and shutout of 2008, and he improves to 6-8. He snapped a three-game skid without a win.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 7/19, 12:05 AM CT
Matt Cain threw six innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five while getting the loss for the Giants as they succumbed to the Brewers by the score of 9-1. Wildness was Cain's undoing, as he walked five batters.

Our View: Cain is a generally effective pitcher, and his strikeout totals help fantasy owners, but he will have trouble picking up more than nine or 10 wins on the year.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 7/17, 7:15 AM CT
The Phillies are reportedly interested in Giants' hurler Matt Cain, according to the Phillyburbs.com. The Phillies are also said to be interested in Pirates' reliever John Grabow.

Our View: The Phillies shot down the rumor that they are targeting AJ Burnett, and are hoping the Giants will shop Cain, who is 5-7 with a 4.06 ERA over 20 starts.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 7/14, 7:05 AM CT
Matt Cain will pitch on Friday in the first game following the All-Star break, according to the SF Chronicle.

Our View: Cain will be followed by Jonathan Sanchez, Tim Lincecum, Barry Zito, and Kevin Correia. Manager Bruce Bochy wants Lincecum to get some extra rest whether he pitches in the All-Star Game or not, and he said matchups played a role when he slated Zito fourth.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 7/11, 4:03 PM CT
Matt Cain, who threw eight shutout innings against the Cubs as recently as July 1, was stellar again on Friday in Wrigley. He gave up no runs over seven innings while striking out nine. Unfortunately, he left with no decision.

Our View: Cain has had an up and down year. In between his two shutout appearances with the Cubs, he gave up five runs to the Dodgers. He remains a great source of strikeouts, though, and he is positioning himself to have a very good fantasy career because of that.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 7/1, 11:55 PM CT
The Giants and Cubs fought through a battle of pitching this evening with the Giants finding a way to win, taking the 2-1 win. RHP Matt Cain was the force of reckoning, pitching eight innings of shutout baseball to allow just two hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Our View: Cain now sits at 5-6 on the season with an ERA of 4.13. He has pitched well, surrendering just one homer through five June starts with 32 strikeouts versus just nine walks. Give him some offense and he is likely to shine.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 6/26, 10:27 PM CT
Matt Cain struggled with the location of his fastball on Thursday night, and the end result was his sixth loss of the season. Cain lasted five innings allowing eight hits, two walks, and four earned runs in the loss.

Our View: Cain just didn't have it tonight, but if the worst outing a guy has is four runs, that isn't awful. Cain still lacks the consistency needed to be a consistent winner, but he certainly has the stuff and the makeup to go on a protracted run if the command kicks in.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsFriday 6/20, 10:23 PM CT
Matt Cain allowed three runs in the first inning but after the he shutdown the Royals over seven scoreless innings to improve his record to 4-5 on the year.

Our View: All told Cain allowed just one walk with eight K as he totally dominated an overmatched Royals lineup after that first inning. Cain now has 19 K over his last 15 innings as he has once again found his strikeout stuff.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 6/14, 11:10 PM CT
San Francisco RHP Matt Cain watched a strong effort go to complete waste this evening as his Giants failed to score a single run of support, falling 4-0 to Oakland. Cain pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

Our View: Cain has allowed just one home run over his last four starts with seven walks and 26 strikeouts over that span.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 6/9, 9:46 PM CT
Matt Cain picked up his third win of the year Monday, allowing just one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings.

Our View: Cain has been hurt by walks this year, but he was stingy with the free passes tonight.

Matt Cain allowed five runs on five hits, walked four and struck out three. The Giants right-hander lost his fourth game of the season, his first to the Mets this year.

Our View: In the young starters last two outings he had limited his opponents to five runs over 13 innings.

According to the Giants' team website, Friday night will be the sixth time that young Matt Cain opposes future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. Maddux owns 350 career victories and has gotten the better in his confrontations with the 23-year-old Giant. The last time they met in San Francisco, the result was lopsided. Maddux silenced the Giants in their April 7 home opener, allowing one run and three hits in seven innings in an 8-4 Padres triumph. Cain struggled, yielding five runs (four earned) and seven hits while walking five in 4 1/3 innings. The last time they met, period, was much more of a standoff. Cain allowed one run and five hits in seven innings while Maddux blanked the Giants for seven innings.

Our View: Maddux is 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA when he faces Cain. The mirror image is predictable: Cain is 0-3, although his ERA is a respectable 3.66.

San Francisco RHP Matt Cain pitched well, but the Giants' pathetic offense once again failed to show as the Marlins earned the win in the bottom of the ninth to give Florida the win, 5-4. Cain pitched six innings, surrendering just two runs (both earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Our View: Cain walked off with no decision, his sixth such result in 11 starts. Cain now sits at 2-3 with 11 walks versus 34 strikeouts (though he carries eight walks versus 11 strikeouts through May).
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSunday 5/18, 10:19 PM CT
Matt Cain had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings before it all came crashing down as he allowed six hits, including four home runs, on his was to permitting six runs to cross the plate on Sunday. Cain also struck out six batters in the no-decision.

Our View: Cain was gliding along until seemingly everyone on the White Sox started hitting home runs. For once Cain got run support but he was unable to capitalize on it.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsTuesday 5/13, 11:51 PM CT
Matt Cain pitched eight strong innings to pick up his second victory of the season for the Giants. Cain threw 114 pitches while allowing two runs on seven hits and four walks.

Our View: Cain has overcome the struggles that haunted him earlier in the year, and he has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five games.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 5/8, 3:41 PM CT
Matt Cain surrendered five runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Pirates. Cain did have five strikeouts, with only one walk. He falls to 1-3 for the season, with a 4.50 ERA.

Our View: Cain was pitching well this season, as he held a good 1.24 WHIP heading into today's game. He only allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings in his previous start (against the Phillies) as well. Additionally, he has only allowed three earned runs over his previous three starts before today's loss. He should bounce back fine.

Another strong outing, another predictable outcome as Matt Cain held the Padres to one run over seven innings to pick up a no-decision as the Giants failed to produce a run when he was on the hill. Cain allowed five hits, with three walks and seven K on the night.

Our View: Cain has now thrown 12.2 innings over two starts and allowed just one run only to pick up two no-decisions. It looks like this is shaping up to be a repeat of last season with Cain posting solid numbers but not earning many wins because of an anemic offense.

Matt Cain was torched by the Cardinals a week after he held them hitless for six innings as he gave up a career worst nine runs in just 3.2 innings on the night. Cain permitted two home runs amongst the eight hits he allowed and he also walked three batters in his second loss of the season.

Our View: Cain just didn't have it tonight as he threw plenty of fastballs in the 86-89 mph range. It's been a rough start to the season as he has 19 K and 15 BB in the early going.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsSaturday 4/12, 5:19 PM CT
Matt Cain had a no-hitter through six innings before being removed after 6.2 innings having allowed three hits, three walks and two runs against the Cardinals.

Our View: Though he left with a 5-2 lead, the Giants bullpen blew yet another of Cain's outing for the Giants hard luck loser. Cain may be the unluckiest pitcher in baseball since the start of the 2007 season.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/7, 7:09 PM CT
Matt Cain had a rough outing on Monday as he struggled all day to find the strike zone as he ultimately allowed four earned runs with five walks in 4.1 innings to pick up his first loss of the season. Cain threw only 56 strikes in 96 pitches which led to seven hits on the day. Cain could once again struggle for victories with an anemic offense behind him, but he certainly has the stuff to be a top-35 starter if he can harness his pitches.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsWednesday 4/2, 11:13 AM CT
Matt Cain pitched well in a no decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday as he threw 5.2 scoreless innings, with only three hits allowed. He had four walks with five strikeouts and it was a good outing for him, in a game that the Giants lost 3-2. Cain has the tools to be an effective starter this season, and this was a solid way for him to start 2008.
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsThursday 3/6, 8:37 PM CT
Matt Cain looked awful on Thursday as he allowed five hits and five runs in just 2.1 innings against the Angels. Cain pitched three shutout innings in his first start this spring, so it's far from panic time in San Francisco. Many will look at his win total of just seven and overlook Cain on draft day this year, don't be one of them as he has the talent to be a big-time winner.

Matt Cain will be the new face of the Giants as he will be the team's poster boy on their pocket schedule and their "What Would A Gamer Do?" ad campaign according to a report in the Mercury News. He will even take up residence in Barry Bonds old locker. Cain will look to build on what was a solid season despite his 7-16 record, a grossly exaggerated total that was the result of horrific run support (3.51 runs per 9 IP, the second lowest mark in baseball).
Matt Cain, P, San Francisco GiantsMonday 4/9, 11:37 PM CT
Matt Cain had a bittersweet start Monday at San Diego, taking a loss despite the fact that he allowed just one hit and one run over seven innings. Cain no-hit the Padres for six frames before Khalil Greene led off the seventh with a double; Greene went on to score the only run in the game.

Matt Cain agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Giants on Thursday, according to the AP. The deal includes an option for 2011. Terms of the contract weren't released, but it's believed that the deal is worth around $9 million over the four years. "When you have an opportunity to cement a working relationship with a young man like Matt, you definitely have to investigate it and I think both parties are happy that we were able to work it out," general manager Brian Sabean said in a statement. "Obviously, we all saw his immense talent over the last two years, but we all have to remind ourselves that Matt is only 22 years old and his best years are ahead of him."
