Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 8/20, 11:32 PM CT
Chris Duncan has been released by the Red Sox, according to the Providence Journal.

Our View: Duncan was acquired in the trade that shipped shortstop Julio Lugo to St. Louis, but he failed to see any action with the Sox, as he only hit .188 over 92 plate appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston still has a player to be named or cash considerations coming in that trade.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 7/23, 8:02 AM CT
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have optioned newly acquired outfielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Our View: Not only is there no room to put Duncan at the major league level right now, but the Sox likely want him to get some seasoning in Triple-A to see if he can bust out of his current 1-for-31 slump. If Duncan is recalled at some point, it's hard to imagine his as more than a bat off the bench.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 7/22, 4:37 PM CT
According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chris Duncan has been traded to Boston Red Sox for Julio Lugo. Boston will also get a player to be named later or cash.

Our View: This move makes sense for the Cardinals on nearly every level. Duncan is mired in a prodigious slump, with just one hit and one total base in the month of July, and the Cards were in dire need of a major league caliber infielder. The Red Sox are reportedly paying the bulk of Lugo's hefty remaining salary, as well, so this is a big win for the Birds on Bat no matter how you look at it.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 7/22, 11:42 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals have optioned slumping outfielder Chris Duncan to Tripple-A Memphis.

Our View: Duncan's struggles have been beyond miserable this month. He has exactly one hit and one total base in July, and currently has no business playing at the major league level. Due to his amount of major league service time though, Duncan had to agree to the demotion. The Cardinals made the move move late Tuesday night and infielder Brian Barden is expected to be called up before Wednesday's game. Duncan will not be missed in fantasy formats.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 7/21, 5:00 PM CT
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says struggling outfielder Chris Duncan has been receiving "unfair" treatment from fans and the media, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: The dubious comment came in response to reporters' questions about why TLR pinch hit Chris Duncan in a tight game in the ninth inning on Tuesday. Duncan promptly grounded into a game-ending double play. He has one hit in 27 at-bats in July, and only one home run since May 26.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 6/16, 10:14 PM CT
Chris Duncan had his first multi-hit game since May 30 on Tuesday, going 3-for-5 while scoring three runs in the Cardinals 11-2 victory over Detroit. He also hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, his first since May 26.

Our View: Duncan has cooled off considerably since a hot start and probably isn't worth a roster spot in any format due to his streaky nature and inconsistent playing time.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 5/26, 10:58 PM CT
Chris Duncan was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's 8-1 win over the Brewers.

Our View: After an April in which he hit .304, Duncan has been miserable in May. Before Tuesday's game he was hitting .197 with one home run this month, so it was a much needed offensive outburst. His struggles have contributed to the Cardinals' lack of runs scored this month.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxSunday 5/10, 9:30 PM CT
Chris Duncan was 2-for-5 with three RBI as the Cardinals survived a Reds rally to win 8-7 in 10 innings on Sunday.

Our View: Duncan is off to a great start in 2009 as he is hitting .288 with 23 RBI through 104 at bats. He hit .248 and .259 the past two seasons. However, he has just three home runs. While we expect the home runs to come at a quicker pace, it seems unlikely he hits for such a high average all summer.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 5/1, 9:07 PM CT
Chris Duncan continued his hot start at the plate on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a run, and two RBI. The Cardinals beat the Nationals 6-2.

Our View: Duncan continues to hit the ball well despite not being in the lineup everyday. If he keeps hitting like this, he should see more starts in the future, but there will always be those days when Tony La Russa changes up his lineup, so watch out for that.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 4/16, 7:28 PM CT
Chris Duncan, who was a home run shy of the cycle just yesterday, belted his second homer of the year against the Cubs on Thursday and went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Our View: Duncan has put together a nice little eight-game hit streak and has logged a extra-base hit in each of his last five games. On the downside, he was caught stealing and also commit an error in the field, though it'll be tough for Tony LaRussa to take the power lefty out of the lineup if he stays hot at the plate. At this point, despite St. Louis' crowded outfield, it appears that Duncan should be good to play five or six days per week.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/15, 6:21 PM CT
Chris Duncan was a home run shy of the cycle on Wednesday in the Cardinals 12-7 win over the Diamondbacks. Along with his three hits, he also drove in two runs.

Our View: Regardless of why he's in the lineup, the son of Cardinal pitching coach Dave Duncan, has produced so far this season. After today's contest he's hitting .344 with a home run and seven RBI. Tony's willing to give him the time, so he's not a bad waiver pickup in mixed leagues.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/1, 2:45 PM CT
Chris Duncan went 1-for-2 with a solo home run, two walks, and a strikeout in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Mets. It was his fourth home run of the season.

Our View: Duncan projects to be the Cardinals starting left fielder, but it also appears that the team will keep Colby Rasmus on their major league roster. It would seem that Duncan, rather than Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick, would find his bats most jeopardized by the rookie.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 3/31, 4:58 PM CT
Chris Duncan was 2-for-4 at the dish an d whacked his third homer of the spring Tuesday. He also walked, drove in three and vaulted his average above the .300 plateau.

Our View: Duncan is having a pretty good spring, and since he had the titanium plate put in his neck, his power has returned. This is the same power that made his an attractive young hitter just a couple years ago. He looks like he's ready to contribute, but he may not get the chance every day unless he's shipped out of St. Louis. There is an overpopulation problem in the Cardinals' outfield.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 3/12, 7:45 AM CT
Chris Duncan sat out Wednesday's game due to a slight pull in his groin, but he is expected to return to the diamond today, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Duncan believes the pain was probably scar tissue breaking up.

Our View: Duncan can be a solid power hitter, but he has been hindered by injuries over his career, and will have to fight for playing time in a crowded Cardinals' outfield. Consider him as a sleeper for deeper leagues.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 3/11, 5:43 PM CT
According to Matthew Leach of MLB.com, Chris Duncan sat out of Wednesday's Grapefruit League game due to a sore groin. He apparently injured himself returning to first base after a single in Tuesday's contest.

Our View: Keep an eye on Duncan's health, as his nagging aches and pains tend to transform into full blown injuries. Duncan has had a fine spring thus far, and appears poised to make the roster and see legitimate time in left field if he remains healthy.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 3/10, 4:41 PM CT
Chris Duncan went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Tigers.

Our View: Duncan is really coming on strong and feels like he is seeing the ball well this spring. He has below average skills in the outfield but looks like he will get a lot of time early in left field in 2009.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 2/4, 7:44 AM CT
Chris Duncan is believed to be fully recovered from surgery to repair a herniated disk, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He has full strength and use of his right arm again since the first half of the 2007 campaign.

Our View: This is good news for Duncan, but he looks to start the 2009 season as a reserve in a deep and talented Cardinals' outfield.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxMonday 1/19, 12:02 PM CT
Chris Duncan has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Cardinals, hence avoiding salary arbitration, according to the Associated Press. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Our View: The 27-year-old outfielder underwent successful cervical disk replacement surgery back in August, and looks to be ready for the start of spring training.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxMonday 8/4, 6:56 PM CT
St. Louis outfielder Chris Duncan underwent successful surgery on his neck to replace a cervical disc, reports The Sports Network.

Our View: Best-case scenario is Duncan getting back in three to four months. He's obviously out for the year, and will try to make it back for spring training next season.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxSaturday 8/2, 8:00 AM CT
Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan will undergo surgery to install a prosthetic disc in place of a herniated disc in his neck and is out for the regular season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The procedure is relatively new and thought never to be done on an athlete before. It has been called something that could be career threatening.

Our View: While he is certainly not a fan favorite in St. Louis, and of little consequence in fantasy baseball, you don't want to see someone's career end so early because of injury.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 8/1, 9:31 AM CT
Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan may have to undergo surgery at some point to correct a herniated disc in his neck that has been troubling him, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: It's possible Duncan could miss the rest of the season, but fantasy players won't miss him much, as he has struggled to a .246 average with just six home runs and 27 RBI.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 7/22, 4:21 PM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Chris Duncan was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a pinched nerve in his back.

Our View: Duncan had been hitting slightly better since his return from a couple weeks down in the minors. He played last night and there was no apparent injury suffered in the game. The Cardinals recalled OF Joe Mather from Triple-A.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 6/19, 5:47 PM CT
Chris Duncan, who went hitless in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Royals, is hitting .234 on the season. His power numbers have taken a huge hit from a year ago. The Cardinals outfielder/first baseman has only nine extra base hits in 158 at-bats. His slugging percentage was .348 coming into Thursday's action.

Our View: Chris Duncan is 5-for-31 with one RBI since being recalled from the minors to play first base for the injured Albert Pujols.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 6/11, 4:47 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Chris Duncan has been recalled from Triple-A and will play first base for the Cardinals now that Albert Pujols has been placed on the DL due to an injured calf, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: Duncan struggled earlier in the year with 32 K in 127 AB while hitting only four home runs, but he will now be given the chance to reestablish the bat that made him a 20 home run hitter in each of the past two seasons despite less than 400 AB in each campaign.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 6/11, 7:30 AM CT
With Albert Pujols likely headed to the DL, the Cardinals are expected to recall Chris Duncan from Triple-A Memphis to play first base, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Duncan is hitting just .160 in seven games at Triple-A Memphis since being sent down, but the Cards don't really have another option at this point. Joe Mather will also see time at first.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 5/30, 2:20 PM CT
The Cardinals optioned left fielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, this according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch. To fill his roster spot the team promoted prospect Joe Mather.

Our View: The move follows Duncan’s prolonged struggle to regain the power stroke apparently sapped by last season’s sports hernia. With daddy "Dave" hanging around everyday, you know this was a tough decision for manager Tony LaRussa.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 5/30, 10:17 AM CT
Chris Duncan, who was 1-for-11 with six strikeouts in the Houston series heading into Thursday night's series finale, drove in two runs with a two-out single in the first to spark the Cards to victory. The left-fielder has been getting bombed by the media and locals alike for his recent batting slump.

Our View: Duncan is hitting .252 on the season with four home runs, 16 RBI and 20 runs scored.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 5/16, 10:07 PM CT
Chris Duncan went 2-for-4 and recorded the Cardinals' lone RBI in Friday's 3-1 loss to the upstart Rays. The run came on a home run, his fourth of the season.

Our View: He was the sole source of offense for St. Louis tonight, but Duncan only has seven hits and six RBI over 15 games in May.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 5/15, 4:26 PM CT
Chris Duncan had a single and a double which led to two runs and two RBI for the burly slugger.

Our View: This was only the second extra base hit for Duncan in his last 11 games, so he is still trying to find his power stroke. Look for it to happen soon, so Duncan makes a nice buy low candidate.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 4/24, 7:57 AM CT
Chris Duncan batted in the cleanup spot on Wednesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He didn't come through however, as he went 0-for-2, while leaving three men on base in a 7-4 loss to Pittsburgh. Manager Tony La Russa said he might rotate the cleanup spot all season, riding their streaks or priming their swings, depending on need.

Our View: Duncan could generate a lot of RBI while batting cleanup in the solid Cardinals' lineup that features Albert Pujols, but he won't get as many chances if he disappoints like he did last night. He has struck out 11 times over 47 at-bats.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 4/22, 11:47 AM CT
Chris Duncan will ride the pine today in favor of Brian Barton (in left field), according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Barton gets the call, as the team is facing Milwaukee left-handed pitcher Manny Parra.

Our View: Barton is a better hitter than Duncan against lefties, and is batting well right now as he is 14-for-44 with two homers and six RBI. He merits a start if you need help in your outfield.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxFriday 4/18, 11:22 PM CT
Chris Duncan was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and two walks on Friday night.

Our View: Duncan continues to thrive in the number two spot in the Cardinals order, and as long as he continues to hit in front of Albert Pujols, that figures to continue.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxSaturday 4/12, 6:32 PM CT
Chris Duncan hit his first home run of the season on Saturday as he went 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI for the Cardinals.

Our View: Duncan is a key component of what the Cardinals are tying to do on offense, and if he can stay healthy and productive in front of Albert Pujols, team's may not be as easily able to pitch around Pujols.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxMonday 4/7, 7:54 PM CT
Chris Duncan (hamstring) was back in the lineup on Monday for the Cardinals, this according to MLB.com. "He's ready to go," manager Tony La Russa said on Monday afternoon. "I don't want to hold him back if he's ready to go. He was one of our better guys against the Astros. It's time to bring him out." Duncan is a vital bat to stretch out the Cardinals lineup and he figures to push 30 home runs this season if he can figure out a way to hit left-handed pitching.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxMonday 4/7, 2:14 AM CT

Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 4/3, 2:07 PM CT
Chris Duncan missed his second game due to a sore left hamstring on Thursday, according to MLB.com. He may not return until Sunday and Manager LaRussa commented, "He's taking swings, so that's an improvement. We'll see how he comes out of the swings and then talk to head athletic trainer Barry Weinberg about it. Obviously we're going to try not to use him." Hopefully this won't be a chronic problem this season.
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxWednesday 4/2, 9:26 AM CT
Chris Duncan is hitting better now following a dismal spring training, as he went 1-for-3 against Colorado on Tuesday, with one walk and no strikeouts. His job in left field is seemingly safe again.

Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 9/18, 11:48 AM CT
Chris Duncan will have season-ending surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia. Duncan has been dealing with the hernia for about two months and has had just one at-bat since aggravating the injury on Sept. 8. "It's something I have to have done," Duncan told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It's something I thought I could play with, but it got worse." Duncan was hitting .296 on July 21 but has batted just .174 since then. He ends the year with a .259 average, 21 homers and 70 RBI. The team anticipates a 4-6 week recovery for Duncan.

It's believed that he has a sports hernia, and manager Tony La Russa already has ruled the left fielder out for the next four games, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxThursday 8/16, 10:35 AM CT
Chris Duncan, who has been scuffling at the plate as of late, hitting just .167 over the last three weeks, is dealing with a leg injury. However, it's nothing that should keep him from playing, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He's dealing with some soreness there," manager Tony La Russa said, adding that this ailment was not related to his infected knee earlier this season. "It's something to pay attention to."
Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 6/5, 11:05 PM CT

"I said he would be an everyday player," La Russa said, "and that means he's going to play the good majority of the games." Chris Duncan, LF, Boston Red SoxTuesday 7/25, 9:45 AM CT
Chris Duncan was in the starting lineup again Monday despite the fact that lefty Jeff Francis was on the mound, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Although he went hitless last night against Francis, Duncan is batting .316 with three homers and seven RBI in the last 14 days. He has started in left field and hit second in the order in the last six games. Unless the Cardinals trade for an outfielder, Duncan should continue to get most of the time in left.
