Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 11/6, 11:31 AM CT
The Diamondbacks have exercised Brandon Webb's $8.5 million 2010 option, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

Our View: The team was widely expected to do so despite Webb throwing all of four innings in 2009 because of a shoulder injury. He is a great buy-low candidate for next season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 10/16, 1:44 PM CT
The Arizona Republic is reporting that starting pitcher Brandon Webb does not want to talk extension with the Diamondbacks. Webb said he wants to remain with the team past next season, but he is hoping that a healthy 2010 campaign will boost his value.

Our View: The team seems very likely to exercise his 2010 option, but he will wait until after next season to make a decision on his future. His value will never be lower than it is right now, so this looks like a good business move for Webb.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 9/22, 8:27 PM CT
According to the East Valley Tribune, Brandon Webb says that he will not take a pay cut to stay in Arizona.

Our View: The D-Backs are hesitant to pick up Webb's $8.5 million option for next season due to his shoulder surgery in August, but were hoping he would give them a hometown discount and sign an incentive-laden deal for 2010. He is not interested. The ace would rather test the market and see what's out there than to take a pay cut and stay in the desert. If the D-Backs want to keep him next year they'll have to pick up his option. Can you blame him for wanting his paycheck and a chance to play with a winning club?
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/18, 6:22 PM CT
The Diamondbacks will reportedly try to work out a deal with Brandon Webb rather than pick up his $8.5MM option for 2010, according to Jon Heyman's (Sports Illustrated) twitter page.

Our View: Webb is an elite pitcher, but the Diamondbacks are hesitant to pick up his option, as he underwent debridlement surgery on his shoulder in early August.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 9/14, 5:39 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Bob Nightengale (USA Today) tweeted that the Diamondbacks do not intend to pick up Brandon Webb's $8.5MM option for 2010.

Our View: Nightengale believes the club will try to negotiate a one-year deal with the ace hurler though. Buster Olney of ESPN believes Arizona will try to exercise the option if they believe Webb is making steady progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery. Stay tuned for further developments.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 9/14, 10:52 AM CT
ESPN.com's Buster Olney is reporting that the Diamondbacks will have five days after the World Series to make a decision on starting pitcher Brandon Webb for next season. The team can exercise an $8.5 million option, or they can pay a $500,000 buyout. Olney believes they will exercise the option as long as they believe his recovery from shoulder surgery is on track.

Our View: All reports have Webb's rehab going well so far, so expect him to be back in Arizona next season. He has been the face of the franchise for several years, and he is still an elite starting pitcher when healthy. Unless he suffers a setback this winter, he should be fine for next season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 8/3, 5:14 PM CT
As expected, Brandon Webb underwent a debridement procedure on his ailing right shoulder today, according to MLB Fanhouse.

Our View: Webb will not be cleared to play catch for 3-4 months. Skipper A.J. Hinch noted that it is not out of the question for the elite hurler to be ready to go for opening day 2010. It also remains to be seen if Arizona will decline their $8.5MM option on Webb, instead paying him a $500,000 buyout.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/2, 11:48 PM CT
SI.com reports that former Cy Young winner and Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb has elected to undergo surgery on his ailing shoulder on Monday.

Our View: Webb suffered a setback in his rehab, and after exhausting all other forms of treatment, surgery is the only option left. The Diamondbacks support his decision, but it looks as if he may not be a D-Back much longer. He has an $8.5 million option for the 2010 season and with the injury Arizona isn't likely to pick it up. Should they decline he would become a free agent.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/30, 4:21 PM CT
Brandon Webb suffered another setback with his injured right shoulder, and there is a chance he will need to undergo surgery, according to the East Valley Tribune. He will meet with Dr. Keith Meister of the Texas Rangers in Dallas after several doctors were unable to relieve soreness and stiffness in his ailing shoulder.

Our View: The ace hurler has not progressed like Arizona has hoped, and it seems less likely that he will be returning before the end of the 2009 campaign.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 7/1, 2:36 PM CT
According to MLB.com, Brandon Webb has decided against shoulder surgery.

Our View: Webb visited three doctors and they all came to the same conclusion: at this time surgery doesn't seem necessary. The D-Backs' ace is hoping that rest and exercise will land him back on the Major League roster by September. Fantasy owners, don't hold your breath.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/30, 10:18 AM CT
The Arizona Republic reports that Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb could need surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Our View: This is an often very dicey procedure for baseball players, and one the D-Backs would love for Webb to avoid. Chris Carpenter and Curt Schilling have both had the surgery and returned to full strength, but Pedro Martinez and Jason Schmidt had it and were never the same again. Regardless of what Webb ends up having done, the fact that this surgery is being discussed at all is not a good sign for his prospects of returning in 2009.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/25, 8:32 PM CT
Brandon Webb is scheduled to get three more opinions on his achy right shoulder, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The D-Backs are apparently determined to not let their forsaken 2009 season die. Even if he avoids surgery, he will still likely be out a significant amount of time. Regardless, in terms of fantasy baseball this year, Brandon Webb is probably done.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/24, 10:48 AM CT
Shoulder surgery is now likely for injured Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The results of his MRI on Tuesday suggest that Webb might need surgery to repair a torn labrum, a procedure that would require nine months of recovery time. Webb has made only one start in 2009, and it now appears likely it will be the only one he makes this season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 6/19, 8:07 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, Brandon Webb received an MRI on his injured right shoulder Friday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Webb has not shown much improvement in his recovery, and the Diamondbacks fear that he may have a problem with a tendon or ligament - which could require surgery. We will keep you posted on the ace hurler's status, and he should remain stashed on fantasy rosters for now.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 6/19, 8:35 AM CT
The setback that caused Brandon Webb's Friday bullpen session to be canceled has cast doubt with the Diamondbacks that the ace righty will pitch again this season, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: It's certainly beginning to look that way, and you would be well-served to have a backup plan to Webb riding in on a white horse and saving your season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/18, 7:53 PM CT
Brandon Webb's scheduled Friday bullpen session has been canceled due to a setback, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Webb apparently "didn't feel good" when throwing on the side on Thursday. If it wasn't already, Webb's 2009 is really beginning to resemble a lost season. You should probably move on to plan B if you were counting on him saving your own season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/16, 6:32 PM CT
Brandon Webb will throw a bullpen session this Friday according to the Arizona Republic. It will be his first bullpen session since going on the disabled list in April with a right shoulder injury.

Our View: It is still unclear just when the Diamondbacks injured ace will be back, and it would not be wise to count on him saving your season if you've had him stashed on your DL. There's no telling how effective he will be in 2009 after the injury and long layoff.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/11, 11:08 AM CT
Injured ace Brandon Webb is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session since going on the disabled list in April with right shoulder bursitis this weekend according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The Diamondbacks are hoping Webb can be back in the rotation sometime around the All-Star break, but there has been no clear cut indication of when he might actually be back. Frustrated Webb owners will just have to keep holding on to the dominant righty. He could be a candidate to trade around the time he is activated, since there is no telling how effective he will be this season, or if he might get hurt again immediately.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/7, 1:04 PM CT
Brandon Webb is progressing in his recovery from right shoulder bursitis, and is aiming at Friday for his first mound session after throwing 40 pitches off flat ground Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: This is encouraging, and the ace hurler shall patiently remain stashed on fantasy rosters. He is still a few weeks from returning to Arizona.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/3, 10:05 PM CT
Brandon Webb reported no problems with his injured shoulder following a flat ground bullpen session on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. However, the starter is still weeks away from rejoining the rotation. He said it is possible that he throws off of a mound on Tuesday. He has been on the DL since his opening day start and hopes to be back before the all-star break in July.

Our View: Yes, he is still weeks away from returning from shoulder bursitis. His continued absence is surely costing his fantasy owners, but we still maintain hope that he will return to his excellent form that he has displayed over the past few seasons.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/2, 8:58 AM CT
According to the Arizona Republic, Brandon Webb is making progress in his recovery from right shoulder bursitis. Webb threw a flat-ground session on Saturday, is scheduled to throw another on Wednesday, and if all goes well he is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this weekend.

Our View: Webb has said that he wants to be back before the All-Star break, and right now it looks like he is on pace to do so. Owners need to keep monitoring his progress through all of these sessions, but you should have him back at some point in the next several weeks.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 5/29, 8:58 AM CT
The Arizona Republic is reporting that Brandon Webb hopes to return to the Diamondbacks' rotation before the All-Star break. Webb has been out since early in the season with right shoulder bursitis.

Our View: Webb continues to make progress, and it looks like he is getting closer to a return. He hopes to start throwing flat-ground sessions next week, and if that is the case then his timetable is accurate. Keep him on your roster, and stay tuned for his return to the rotation.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/27, 10:20 AM CT
Brandon Webb, who is on the DL with right shoulder bursitis, is building up enough arm stength to participate in long toss, according to the Arizona Republic. Manager A.J. Hinch said, "Once we do that, it is like starting over. We will have to build his pitch count, similar in how we do in spring training."

Our View: There remains no timetable for Webb's return to Arizona, but there is belief he could be back as early as mid-June. The ace hurler shall patiently remain stashed on fantasy rosters.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/20, 11:30 AM CT
Brandon Webb played catch yesterday for the fourth time since landing on the DL with a shoulder ailment, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: The ace hurler will rest today, and is optimistic of progressing to bullpen sessions next week. There is no exact timetable for his return to Arizona, but there is belief he could be back in late-June.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 5/18, 8:06 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw off flat ground for the third time in four days on Monday, according to MLB.com. He will throw again on Tuesday before taking Wednesday off. He is still pretty far off from pitching off a mound.

Our View: Webb appears to be a long way away from rejoining the Arizona rotation. It will be at least mid-to-late June before he comes back at the earliest, but it will probably be closer to late June or early July. Keep him on the DL, as he will be coming back.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 5/15, 6:59 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Brandon Webb threw for about five minutes in the bullpen on Friday. It was the first time Webb has thrown since being shut down on April 24 with shoulder stiffness.

Our View: This is a small step for Webb, but it is a step in the right direction. He is still a long way from returning, but at least he is making progress. Webb owners should be encouraged by this news.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/6, 12:18 PM CT
Brandon Webb could begin playing catch in around 10 days while recovering from right shoulder bursitis, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: He will not rush his return to Arizona, and wants to take time to be sure the ailment is completely gone. He should remain out until at least early-June.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/25, 2:15 PM CT
Brandon Webb's shoulder didn't allow him to make his scheduled appearance in the bullpen on Friday, and an MRI showed that he had a small amount of fluid build up in his shoulder though no structural damage was found, according to the Boston Herald. Still, Webb will be shutdown for the next three weeks to allow the joint time to heal.

Our View: This is awful news for Webb owners. Being that he won't throw for at least three weeks, he will almost certainly need at another couple of weeks after that time to build up the stamina necessary to start for the D'backs. That puts the next potential Webb sighting during a game sometime in early June. Look for Yusmeiro Petit to continue to fill in for Webb in the starting rotation.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/24, 7:04 PM CT
According to the Miami Herald, Brandon Webb experienced a setback in his shoulder rehab. His bullpen session was scratched on Friday because of tightness in his pitching shoulder.

Our View: This doesn't sound good. Webb has been out since Opening Day and his shoulder acted up Friday while he was playing catch. He's been officially shut down until the pain subsides. Had the session occurred today and gone well, Webb would have made a minor league rehab start, but he appears to be a long way off from that now.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/22, 11:12 AM CT
Brandon Webb, who is recovering from tightness in his throwing shoulder, is slated for a bullpen session Friday, according to the Arizona Republic. He is anxious to return to the rotation and he said, "It is real tough. I am used to going out there every five days and throwing, trying to help the team and now just sitting back on the sidelines and not be able to do anything really, it is tough."

Our View: Webb may amp up the intensity in Friday's session, but there remains no timetable for his return to Arizona. He may be ready to progress to a simulated game if he fares fine Friday.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 4/21, 9:15 AM CT
The Arizona Republic is reporting that Brandon Webb will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday, his first since going on the DL.

Our View: Webb's next start still remains unscheduled, which means he still has some time to spend on the DL. Don't expect him to be ready for a while, but if he comes back healthy it will be worth the wait.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 4/19, 8:28 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw 22 pitches off of flat ground after playing long toss on Sunday, according to MLB.com. He is currently on the DL due to shoulder stiffness. He is expected to throw off a mound later this week.

Our View: Webb has yet to experience any setbacks in his rehab, but he has not done anything strenuous yet. It still appears that he will be on the DL longer than the minimum 15 days that were appointed to him.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/17, 7:49 PM CT
Ace Brandon Webb played catch on Friday, and the session went very well. "I was a little apprehensive letting it go off the bat," Webb informs MLB.com. "But as soon as I started throwing I was like this feels totally different than what it did so I knew then that it was going to feel good." He is on the DL due to right shoulder stiffness. Webb will throw on flat ground again on Sunday.

Our View: We don't want to get too excited. After all, we're only talking about catch. Hopefully Webb can jump on the mound early next week and really test out his shoulder.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 4/16, 10:37 AM CT
The Arizona Republic reports that Brandon Webb wil play catch on Friday in his first action since being placed on the DL with shoulder tightness. If the shoulder responds well, he could throw off a mound a few days later.

Our View: There will be a lot of attention paid to Webb's recovery due to the fact that he has been a fantasy force for the past few seasons. His arm has logged a ton of innings in those seasons so it wouldn't be a shock to see him limited throughout 2009.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 4/12, 4:36 PM CT
MLB.com reports that the Diamondbacks have placed Brandon Webb on the 15-day DL due to tightness in his shoulder. The move is retroactive to April 7.

Our View: Webb is still awaiting results from additional tests requested by Dr. James Andrews. The Diamondbacks say that the move is precautionary, but there is still plenty of reason to be concerned about Arizona's ace.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/11, 10:35 AM CT
The MRI on Brandon Webb's shoulder has come back clean, according to the Arizona Republic. The stiffness Webb is dealing with is muscular, not structural, and he will play catch tomorrow with the hope of returning to the rotation on Friday in San Francisco.

Our View: Webb isn't completely out of the woods, but this is obviously very good news for his owners. We'll let you know how his session of catch goes.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/10, 10:43 AM CT
It has just recently come to light that Brandon Webb saw top-of-the-line orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to have his arm examined in December, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Apparently Dr. Andrews didn't find anything out of the ordinary with Webb's arm, telling the pitcher it was just typical tendinitis and bursitis that he was suffering from, though this is just another tidbit to add on to several other worrying reports regarding Webb's health over the past few days. While Webb will miss his next start, a decision regarding a possible placement on the DL has yet to be made. It's by no means time to deal Webb for 50 cents on the dollar, but we can't say that there isn't at least some real cause for concern with Webb at this point.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 4/9, 1:52 PM CT
Concerns raised by insurance companies over Brandon Webb's arm caused the Diamondbacks to pull their offer of a three-year, $54MM contract extension last June, according to FOX Sports. Webb passed a team physical, but insurance companies use a higher standard when assessing risk. Multiple companies raised concerns, forming a "red flag" for the Diamondbacks. The extension was contingent on Arizona securing an appropriate insurance policy for the pitcher.

Our View: His health became an issue yesterday, when the team indicated that Webb will miss his scheduled start for Saturday due to right shoulder stiffness. The extent of his ailment is yet to be determined. He will not throw for two days, and a decision has not been made if he will need to go on the DL.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/8, 1:53 PM CT
Brandon Webb will miss his next scheduled start due to right shoulder stiffness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Webb felt good Tuesday after playing catch and expected to make his next start Saturday against the Dodgers, but the stiffness returned today. The team will wait to see how the ace hurler feels tomorrow before deciding whether tests will be needed. Yusmeiro Petit will start in his place Saturday.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/8, 9:55 AM CT
Brandon Webb did not experience any shoulder stiffness while playing catch before batting practice Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Webb was forced to leave Monday's start after four innings due to stiffness, but the ace hurler is expected to be fine, and remains scheduled to make his second start Saturday against the Dodgers at Chase Field.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 4/7, 9:17 AM CT
Brandon Webb is not concerned with the shoulder stiffness that forced him to exit Monday's start after giving up six earned runs over four innings, according to MLB.com.

Our View: The ace hurler was a disappointment in the season opener, but he expects to be fine. Hopefully he will bounce back in his next outing.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 4/6, 5:43 PM CT
Brandon Webb had a poor start to 2009 as he lasted just four innings in Arizona's 9-8 win over the Rockies. He allowed six hits, two walks, and six earned runs while striking out two hitters.

Our View: Webb has logged a ton of innings on his right arm over the past few seasons, and there's a chance that could finally catch up to him this season. He finished last season poorly and continued with a rocky spring training. While generally viewed as one of the most reliable pitchers in baseball, he failed the faithful today.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 3/26, 6:08 PM CT
Brandon Webb finally had a quality outing this spring. He tossed six innings of one run ball on Thursday, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four.

Our View: Webb has been shaky all spring, so it's nice to see him tuck a positive start under his belt. This could be him finally getting into gear. Consider him a top 10 fantasy starter.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 3/21, 7:54 PM CT
Brandon Webb had another rough spring start on Saturday. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He did manage to strike out five though.

Our View: Webb has been very un-Webb like this spring. While there is no real cause for concern yet, it would be nice to see him have one positive outing before the games start to count. He is currently sporting a bloated 8.18 spring ERA.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 3/15, 8:49 PM CT
Brandon Webb took another beating in his second appearance this spring, this time at the hands of the Cubs. Over four innings, he allowed four hits, three runs, and two walks, while striking out four hitters.

Our View: Webb has allowed six runs through seven innings of work this spring, but we hesitate to read anything into that. Until we find out that his devastating sinker just doesn't have the same action as it used to, we'll continue to believe in the 2006 NL Cy Young award winner who finished runner-up in each of the past two seasons.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/10, 6:23 PM CT
Brandon Webb got the loss Tuesday versus the Dodgers, surrendering three runs on four hits in three innings of work. He also walked a pair of batters and struck out four.

Our View: The team reported stiffness in Webb's forearm last week, but it is uncertain whether the pain, which was said to have subsided, played a factor in today's poor start.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 3/3, 10:50 PM CT
Brandon Webb, who was held out of his last exhibition start upon feeling tightness in his forearm, will take the mound Wednesday against Team Mexico, according to the East Valley Tribune.

Our View: "It was a real minor thing, and to the point that now he is actually on a regular spring training schedule," manager Bob Melvin said. "It hasn't been an issue since he was playing catch." Monitor Webb's effectiveness in his start, but don't expect the injury to be an issue.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 2/27, 12:25 PM CT
Brandon Webb has been scratched from today's start due to forearm tightness, according to MLB.com.

Our View: He does not believe the ailment merits concern, and he may be able to start as early as Saturday. He will play catch today.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 12/18, 7:27 AM CT
MLB.com reports that starter Brandon Webb would decline an invitation to play in the World Baseball Classic.

Our View: Webb, who won 22 games last season with Arizona, will likely get an invitation. Players who opt out of the competition will be able to undergo their common preparations for the regular season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 10/2, 12:17 PM CT
The Arizona Diamondbacks have ace Brandon Webb under their control for two more seasons, but are already talking contract extension with him, according to the Arizona Republic.

Our View: Webb picked up 22 victories and posted an ERA of 3.30 with a WHIP of 1.20 while striking out 183 hitters in 226.2 innings. With the starting pitching market still sparse, and high-dollar contracts going out to average hurlers, Arizona clearly wants to be ahead of the pack in retaining Webb at today's prices.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/27, 10:40 PM CT
Brandon Webb is in the running for the NL Cy Young and on Saturday night it was another good start. Even though Webb didn't get the win he pitched seven innings surrendering four runs.

Our View: Webb finished his 2008 with 22 wins and an ERA of 3.24 and a WHIP of 1.20. The Cy Young looks like it is going to come down between Tim Lincecum and Webb.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 9/22, 10:43 PM CT
Brandon Webb hurled seven innings of two run ball against the Cardinals to pick up his 22nd victory of the season. He walked two batters while permitting eight hits on the night.

Our View: For those Cy Young voters who look only at win totals, this effort might have sewn up the award for Webb. Over his last three outings Webb is 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP as he tries to convince the world that he deserves the award over Tim Lincecum.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 9/21, 10:47 PM CT
Brandon Webb is hopeful that his 21 victories will be enough for him to pick up the 2008 NL Cy Young award, according to the Arizona Republic. "I would think that would be enough," he said. "But you never know."

Our View: Would someone please tell all the players, ex-players and those who vote for the award that wins are hardly a measure to depend on when it comes to award voting. Tim Linceucm, who has an ERA that is roughly three quarters of a run better to go along with a lower WHIP and 73 more K, has been the superior pitcher by nearly every measure other than wins. Sure he has "only 17", but the he has left five games this year with the lead only to see the bullpen blow it. Sorry Mr. Webb, but you just don't deserve the award.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/20, 11:45 AM CT
It is possible that Arizona right-handers Brandon Webb and Dan Haren could skip the World Baseball Classic that is set to take place next spring, according to the Arizona Republic. "I've thrown a lot of innings this year, and I don't know if I want to be ready to be in a game situation at that point in the year," said Webb.

Our View: The Diamondbacks (and fantasy owners) will probably celebrate that decision quietly, because losing one of the game's best pitchers to an injury in an exhibition would obviously hamper their season greatly.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 9/17, 11:27 PM CT
It took Brandon Webb three attempts to win his 20th game of the year but it only took one to win his 21st. Webb went seven inning giving up two runs in the Diamondbacks 7-6 win over the Giants.

Our View: Before he won his 20th game two starts ago, people were wondering where the real Brandon Webb disappeared to. Well, it looks like he's back, because in his last two starts he has gone 15 innings, while giving up only two runs.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/12, 11:30 PM CT
Brandon Webb finally managed his 20th victory on Friday night over the Reds. He had failed miserably in his previous three attempts, two coming against the Dodgers. Against the Reds he was his old self while throwing eight innings of shutout ball. He allowed five hits and two walks in the process.

Our View: Webb's control was an issue in his previous starts where he walked 11 in nine innings. Owners are undoubtedly happy with this most recent turn of events. Webb is simply too good to sit and we continue to recommend him as a must-start.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 9/6, 5:13 PM CT
Brandon Webb was pulled after just 5.2 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday and has now posted three terrible starts in a row. He gave up seven runs on five hits and seven walks. Manny Ramirez was the only Dodger to hit a home run off of him - a three-run shot in the fifth.

Our View: Webb has combined to go just 13.2 innings in his last three starts. He has surrendered 21 runs in that span to go with 13 walks and 22 hits. It's difficult to explain the struggles and despite them, we still feel he is one of the best starters in the NL. With this recent string of catastrophic appearances, he may be in danger of losing a Cy Young award to CC Sabathia, who has only made 12 NL starts.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/31, 11:07 PM CT
Brandon Webb was rocked by the Dodgers on Sunday night. He allowed eight hits and eight runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings. Webb hurt himself by walking five and giving up two homers.

Our View: That's back-to-back awful outings for the Cy Young contender. We're not ready to panic.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 8/27, 12:06 AM CT
Brandon Webb had a hiccup Tuesday, as he gave up six runs on nine hits and a walk over just 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Padres.

Our View: Webb failed to reach the 20-win plateau, but he's still the favorite for the NL Cy Young.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/21, 11:31 PM CT
Brandon Webb's monster season continued Thursday night against the Padres as he won his 19th game of the season. Webb pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out eight and only allowing three hits.

Our View: Webb has been outstanding this season and is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young. Expect his dominance to continue as he seeks his 20th win of the season next start.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/21, 8:42 PM CT
Brandon Webb (18-4, 2.85) hopes to continue his dominance tonight in his start against the struggling San Diego Padres.

Our View: Webb has been outstanding this season and is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young. Expect his dominance to continue tonight against the lackluster Padres.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 8/15, 10:36 PM CT
Brandon Webb made another case for his second Cy Young award Friday, giving up only two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six over eight innings.

Our View: Webb has 18 wins now and is a clear favorite for the Cy.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 8/10, 6:29 PM CT
Brandon Webb earned yet another victory, his 17th, in pitching Arizona to a 6-1 win over Atlanta. Webb only threw six innings, but he struck out five and gave up only one run.

Our View: Webb is making a strong bid for the Cy Young Award, and in his last two outings, he has given up just two runs in 15 innings.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 8/5, 10:52 PM CT
The ace was at it again as Arizona turned to the dominating arm of RHP Brandon Webb to get the 3-1 win over Pittsburgh. Webb pitched the full game, allowing just one run on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: The guy was 3-0 last month, he's touting an ERA of 2.93, and he's got his first win of August. It's business as usual for Brandon Webb.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 8/5, 7:39 AM CT
MLB.com reports Arizona SP Brandon Webb (15-4, 3.04 ERA) will start Tuesday, August 5, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Our View: Look for Webb to continue his dominance against the anemic Pirates lineup.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/31, 11:33 PM CT
Brandon Webb won his 15th game of the season by throwing eight innings and giving up just one earned run in Arizona's 2-1 win over L.A.

Our View: Webb's ERA dropped to 3.04, and he is on his way to picking up another Cy Young Award if he keeps it up.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/26, 11:01 PM CT
Brandon Webb won his 14th game of the season in the Diamondbacks 5-3 win over the Giants. He threw seven innings, surrendering three runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Our View: Webb continues his bid for the Cy Young Award, and though his counterpart, Tim Lincecum, was better, Webb still managed the win.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 7/20, 7:58 PM CT
The Dodgers and Diamondbacks locked horns today with Arizona ruling the bulk of the day, but they fell in the top of the ninth to allow five Dodger runs and suffer the 6-5 loss. As a result, ace Brandon Webb failed to get a decision, going eight strong innings to allow just one run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: Webb watched in horror as reliever Brandon Lyons threw 27 pitches over 2/3 of an innings, allowing five runs on five hits to blow the win. Webb has just one decision, a win, over his four July starts, allowing just eight combined earned runs over that stretch with seven walks and 22 strikeouts.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 7/15, 11:56 AM CT
Brandon Webb officially ruled himself out for tonight's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, according to the Arizona Republic. He said, "I've probably got a zero percent chance of throwing. A little bit disappointing, but, obviously, I'm still here, and I'm excited just to be here and be a part of it."

Our View: Webb threw 108 pitches Sunday against the Phillies. He was hoping to be able to pitch in the All-Star Game if he had a less strenuous outing.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 7/13, 3:38 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw well in the Diamondbacks 6-3 loss to the Phillies on Sunday. Webb pitched seven innings and struck out six while allowing two runs on seven hits.

Our View: Despite some recent less-than-perfect outings, Webb had a very good first half and is a fantasy stalwart as a pitcher.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 7/8, 9:45 PM CT
Brandon Webb threw six shutout innings on Tuesday against the lowly Washington Nationals. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out six.

Our View: Webb had been looking sorta shaky, given his standards, and the Nats came along at just the right time.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 7/5, 2:27 PM CT
Brandon Webb will be the NL starter for the 2008 All-Star game, the New York Post reports. The 2006 Cy Young winner is tied for the major league lead with 12 wins, and he boasts a 3.43 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts.

Our View: Some people will undoubtedly quibble with this choice, but Webb has to enter any discussion about the best pitchers in the majors.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 7/3, 6:06 PM CT
After seemingly recovering from a rough patch of starts by defeating the Florida Marlins last Saturday, Brandon Webb struggled through six innings on Thursday afternoon. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out six.

Our View: Because of the miracle at Chase Field, that saw the D'backs score six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Webb didn't factor into the decision. He pitched poorly enough to deserve the loss, and at one point looked completely disinterested in pitching.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 6/28, 11:17 PM CT
Brandon Webb struck out eight and gave up two runs in six innings for the Diamondbacks, who ended a three-game losing streak and beat Florida 6-2 on Saturday night.

Our View: The Diamondbacks' ace gave up 11 earned runs in his previous two starts, both losses, but bounced back strong to keep Arizona (41-40) from falling below the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 6/28, 12:39 PM CT
The Diamondbacks will be enjoying the efforts of the best pitcher on the staff as they face the Florida Marlins this evening, one of few non-interleague slates on the day, according to the Sports Network. Brandon Webb comes in hoping to get his season back in dominating form, but there is reason for concern.

Our View: Webb began the season with nine straight victories, but has since dropped four of six decisions, including a 3-1 loss at Florida on May 21st, allowing six hits and three runs over seven innings in that outing, walking none and striking out seven. Webb pitched for two more wins on May 31st and June 6th to improve to 11-2, but is winless in three subsequent starts, allowing 21 hits and 12 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings against the New York Mets, Oakland and Minnesota.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/22, 7:17 PM CT
Brandon Webb lost his second straight game on Sunday as he gave up five runs, four earned, over seven innings against the Twins

Our View: Since taking a ball off his hip and suffering from a "dead arm" period, Webb is 0-2 with a 8.22 ERA, awful numbers for such an excellent pitcher. The good news is that he has walked just five batters against 10 batters in those three outings, but it is clear that something could physically be bothering the big guy.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 6/22, 12:26 PM CT
The Diamondbacks will push ace Brandon Webb to the mound today as they face the Minnesota Twins and Livan Hernandez, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: In six starts since going 9-0, Webb as struggled to three losses, going 2-3 with an ERA of 4.54 in that span. On June 17th Webb struggled through his shortest outing in four years, giving up seven runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings. Overall Webb now sits at 11-3 with a 3.27 ERA. On the other hand, Hernandez is 7-4 with a 5.56 ERA, picking up his first win in six starts with his last trip to the mound.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 6/20, 5:24 PM CT
Brandon Webb still wants to remain with the D'backs but contract talks have been put on hold for the moment, according to MLB.com. Webb is under contract for 2009 and the club holds an option for the 2010 season ($8.5 million).

Our View: Arizona is simply being fiscally responsible here as they control Webb for two more years, and with the fragile nature of pitcher's arms, it will probably prove beneficial if they remain patient with their ace.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/18, 12:09 AM CT
Even Brandon Webb has a hiccup every now and then. The former Cy Young winner allowed seven runs on nine hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings in Tuesday's loss to Oakland.

Our View: This is the most runs Webb has allowed since, ironically, the last outing of his Cy Young winning 2006 campaign. Don't worry. He'll surely bounce back just fine.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksTuesday 6/17, 3:50 PM CT
Brandon Webb will be shooting for his 12th win of the season tonight when the Diamondbacks host the Athletics, according to MLB.com. Webb faced the Athletics back in 2006 and threw a complete game, while allowing one run on four hits at McAfee Coliseum. Webb is 11-2 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 14 starts this season.

Our View: Webb has been nursing a bruised hip, but Manager Bob Melvin isn't concerned, and Webb got an extra day of rest with Monday's off day.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/12, 2:37 PM CT
Brandon Webb is a little sore after sustaining a bruise (above his right hip) when struck by a line drive by Carlos Delgado of the Mets, but he is not injured, according to MLB.com. Webb has experienced a decrease in velocity on his pitches, but is not concerned, as he stated, "I don't know what to say about it. My arm doesn't hurt as of yet, so I'm not concerned. I think all pitchers, over the course of the year, go through a span where they have a dead-arm period, and I think that's what this is. I don't know, we'll see."

Our View: Manager Bob Melvin isn't concerned either, and noted that a decrease in velocity at points during a season is common. His next start is scheduled for Tuesday, and he will get an extra day to rest as the team has an off day Monday.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 6/12, 9:16 AM CT
Brandon Webb experienced decreased velocity in his last start in which ended after five innings, and stated on Wednesday that he may be going through a "dead arm" period, according to the Arizona Republic. Webb added, "Yeah, it doesn't hurt. Maybe a dead-arm period or something like that. Like I said, it doesn't hurt, so it's tough to tell. Everything feels good."

Our View: The team is hopeful he will bounce back refreshed in his next start on Tuesday against Oakland. He will be getting an extra day of rest with Monday's off day. Fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned unless he continues to struggle in his next start.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 6/11, 10:42 PM CT
Brandon Webb was pulled after throwing 58 pitches, 40 for strikes, in five innings against the Mets. Webb allowed five hits, he didn't walk anyone, and permitted three runs to score.

Our View: Webb entered the game with a 1.06 ERA in five games at Shea. There are no injury reports floating around, so we assume that there was nothing physically wrong with Webb when he was pulled, though we are concerned given the low pitch count.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 6/6, 9:58 PM CT
Brandon Webb picked up his 11th win of the season Friday, limiting the Pirates to one run on three hits while striking out three over seven innings of work.

Our View: Webb is as automatic as they come in the game right now.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/31, 11:19 PM CT
Brandon Webb hurled a complete game shutout, with only six hits allowed, in Saturday's 4-0 win over Washington. He issued no walks with eight strikeouts.

Our View: Webb had registered back-to-back losses heading into tonight's contest, but bounced back with a vengeance against the Nationals. He is now 10-2 with a 2.69 ERA.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/31, 11:20 AM CT
The Arizona Diamondbacks will look to RHP Brandon Webb today as the team hopes to put an end to a season-high five-game losing streak against the Washington Nationals tonight, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Webb is coming off consecutive losses after winning his fist nine starts of the season. He has six career appearances against Washington with five starts, touting a record of 2-2 with a 3.89 ERA over those performances. However, being home may be the biggest gift of all: The 2006 National League Cy Young winner has won all five of his starts at Chase Field this season, while posting a 3.47 earned run average in those games.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksMonday 5/26, 3:24 PM CT
Brandon Webb suffered his second loss of the season on Monday, as Arizona was topped by Atlanta 7-3. Webb was rocked for seven runs on 10 hits over a mere 4.1 innings of work, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Our View: He has now lost back-to-back starts, but should bounce back fine and fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned. He held a 2.69 ERA and exceptional 0.98 WHIP heading into today's battle.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 5/21, 9:32 PM CT
Brandon Webb suffered his first loss of the season Wednesday after nine straight wins. The righty pitched well, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over seven innings, but the D'Backs fell to the Marlins, 3-1.

Our View: Well, it had to come to an end sometime, right?
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 5/16, 12:00 AM CT
Brandon Webb had another quality start on Thursday as he allowed three runs in 7.1 innings to improve his perfect record to 9-0 with a victory over the Rockies.

Our View: Should we just give him the Cy Young right now? Webb is on some kind of roll right now and tonight he added a season best eight strikeouts to the mix. If you have any hitters who are facing Webb bench them as they aren’t very likely to generate much of anything at the plate.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 5/8, 5:09 PM CT
Brandon Webb improved to 8-0 with his 13th career complete game against the Phillies. Webb, who became the first NL pitcher to win his first eight starts since Pedro Martinez in 1997, allowed two earned runs with no walks in nine innings.

Our View: How good is this guy? Others get more publicity, but few can match the sustained level of dominance that Webb has shown the past three plus years. Continue to ride this horse.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 5/8, 8:52 AM CT
The Diamondbacks have resumed talks with Brandon Webb on a long-term contract extension, and the sides are getting closer to an agreement, according to the Arizona Republic. Webb said, "Yeah, some progress has been made. We've been talking a little bit more. We've made some headway. We'll see where it goes."

Our View: Webb is 8-0, with a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, and the team is wise to want to lock him up for the long-term right now.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/3, 7:03 PM CT

Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 5/3, 4:11 PM CT
Brandon Webb has been named the NL Pitcher of the Month for April, according to MLB.com. Webb went 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA in the month to earn the honor.

Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSunday 4/27, 8:04 PM CT
Brandon Webb, the 2006 Cy Young winner, allowed just one unearned run and twice escaped bases-loaded jams against the Padres to earn Sunday's win.

Our View: Webb became the first six-game winner in the majors and lowered his ERA to 1.98.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/23, 12:07 AM CT
In a game of opposites, where Giants' starter Barry Zito is struggling to find wins and control, Arizona starter Brandon Webb picked up his 5th win, sporting a record void of defeat, as the Diamondbacks took the 4-5 win over the San Francisco Giants. Webb pitched six innings, throwing 96 pitches (65 strikes) to allow three runs (all earned) on nine hits.

Our View: More impressively, Webb walked just two batters while striking out seven and allowing just two fly balls, giving him an ERA of 2.31. Webb also needs to be noted for hitting 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBIs and a run scored.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/16, 5:33 PM CT
Brandon Webb dominated the Giants eight innings to begin a season 4-0 for the first time. Webb allowed three hits, two walks and just one run while striking out five.

Our View: Webb also lowered his ERA to 1.86 as he pounded the strike zone all game with that nasty sinker. Webb has been about as consistent as any NL pitcher the past few years, and he is at the top of his game right now.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 4/16, 12:42 PM CT
Brandon Webb will be aiming for a 4-0 start as he takes the hill against the Giants tonight, according to MLB.com. He currently holds a strong 2.14 ERA over 21 innings, with 17 strikeouts.

Our View: The D-Backs ace will duel with lefty Barry Zito, who remains winless at 0-3.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 4/11, 11:41 PM CT
Brandon Webb improved to 3-0 on the young season as he scattered four hits over eight innings against the Rockies. Webb continues to dominate the competition with a 2.14 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, and there is no reason to think he will be anything less than a top-10 starting pitcher at the end of the season.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 4/5, 10:26 PM CT
Brandon Webb scattered five hits over seven innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Webb allowed only one walk and two runs (one earned) on the night) and now has allowed 13 baserunners over 13 innings. Do you really need us to tell you he is a top-10 hurler? Didn't think so.

Webb got eight of his nine outs on groundballs with one strikeout in his second start of spring training. Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksSaturday 3/1, 8:21 AM CT

The Diamondbacks' ace needed only 16 pitches in his two innings, facing only six batters. Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksWednesday 11/28, 11:20 AM CT
The D'Backs briefly discussed a contract extension with Brandon Webb, but those talks quickly died out. "I would say that the issue is tabled," Webb's agent, Jonathan Maurer told the Arizona Republic. "There was some brief conversation about Brandon, but there's no further conversation on a contract planned at this time." Webb is already under contract through 2009 with a club option for 2010, but Arizona is looking to lock him up further and recently presented Webb an offer for a three-year extension through 2013, which the pitcher turned down.

Micah Owings started in place of Webb, who will now likely start tomorrow instead.
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 9/6, 11:26 AM CT
Brandon Webb has been hit hard in his last two outings, allowing 10 runs in 12 1/3 innings, but he insists that his high innings total is not the cause of his struggles, according to the Arizona Republic. "I feel real good," he said. "I haven't felt any fatigue arm-wise at all. I'm still feeling all right. Early on in my career, when I first started throwing 200 innings, I could feel it a little bit. A lot of times, we were out of it. Now that we've got something extra to play for, I'm thinking it probably won't affect me as much as if we were totally out of it."
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksThursday 8/23, 4:16 AM CT

Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/29, 8:21 AM CT
Bob Melvin says he isn't considering pulling Brandon Webb from his final scheduled start Sunday in order to keep Webb's numbers where they are to help his Cy Young candidacy, the Arizona Republic reports. A rough outing conceivably could damage Webb's chances of winning the award. "I haven't even looked at that," Melvin said. "It would be more if I felt there was a physical problem with Webby or he's thrown too many innings. But the way he pitched (Tuesday) and the fact he's been extremely healthy since that (elbow) problem he had, I don't see any reason not to (let him pitch) right now."
Brandon Webb, P, Arizona DiamondbacksFriday 9/22, 9:35 AM CT
