The Phillies released Julio Mateo Thursday. Mateo came to Philly last July in a trade with Seattle but never was called up to the big leagues. "We didn't feel like we wanted to go to arbitration with him," GM Pat Gillick said in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mateo is involved in a domestic abuse case, but Gillick declined to comment when asked if that had anything to do with the right-hander's release.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Mariners have traded Julio Mateo to the Phillies. It's unclear who the Mariners received in the deal. Mateo has dealt with some off-the-field problems this season, but he's posted a 0.79 ERA in 24 games at Triple-A Tacoma and could be an asset in the Phillies bullpen.

Whether or not Julio Mateo, who has a court appearance scheduled today in New York regarding a charge that he assaulted his wife, will be let back on the team will apparently depend largely on what his teammates say. Mateo was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma last month after the charges were brought against him. "He isn't going to have any problems down (in the bullpen)," GM Bill Bavasi told the Seattle Times. "We know he can pitch." Mateo has a 2.45 ERA in eight outings with Tacoma. Some Mariners' players have apparently been in favor of Mateo's reinstatement, while others are strongly against it. The final decision will be made by Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln.

Julio Mateo, who was arrested and charged with assault earlier this month after a dispute with his wife, will be activated from the Triple-A inactive list on Friday, according to the AP. will report to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday and will be available to pitch Friday. He pitched simulated games Monday and Wednesday at the Mariners spring training complex in Arizona.

Julio Mateo apologized Monday for his arrest following a dispute with his wife at a Manhattan hotel, according to the AP. He was suspended for 10 days without pay on Sunday after being arrested the day before on a charge of third-degree assault. "I am personally embarrassed by the incident on Saturday morning, which resulted in my arrest and absence from my team. I recognize that I have also embarrassed my wife and family, my teammates and the entire Mariners organization in front of our fans. I am very sorry for this, and want to apologize to all of them," he said.

The Mariners optioned Julio Mateo to Triple-A Tacoma after last night's game, according to the Seattle Times. This allows the team to replace him on the roster, as he sorts out the legal troubles resulting from his arrest Saturday. He was charged with third-degree assault after a dispute with his wife left her needing five sitches for a cut lip. "Obviously, we consider this real serious," said manager Mike Hargrove. "Julio is working with the proper authorities in this right now. And besides emphasizing to you our understanding of just how serious this is, we just really can't comment beyond that."

Julio Mateo was arrested Saturday following a dispute at a Manhattan hotel that left his female companion needing five stitches to her mouth, according to the AP. Police initially identified the woman as Mateo's wife, but later said it was unclear whether that was true. Mateo was arrested on a charge of third-degree assault and was awaiting arraignment, police said.

Julio Mateo will miss the rest of the 2006 season after breaking his left hand prior to Monday night's game, according to the AP. He suffered the injury while lifting weights in the clubhouse. The Mariners placed him on the 60-day disabled list.
