| The Phillies released Julio Mateo Thursday. Mateo came to Philly last July in a trade with Seattle but never was called up to the big leagues. "We didn't feel like we wanted to go to arbitration with him," GM Pat Gillick said in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Mateo is involved in a domestic abuse case, but Gillick declined to comment when asked if that had anything to do with the right-hander's release. |

Mateo was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma last month after the charges were brought against him. "He isn't going to have any problems down (in the bullpen)," GM Bill Bavasi told the Seattle Times. "We know he can pitch." Mateo has a 2.45 ERA in eight outings with Tacoma. Some Mariners' players have apparently been in favor of Mateo's reinstatement, while others are strongly against it. The final decision will be made by Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln. |
