Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 2/25, 12:29 PM CT
The Rangers have successfully voided Khalil Greene's contract, according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.

Our View: Greene, who signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with Texas this offseason, was unable to report to camp on Tuesday due to a setback with his social anxiety disorder. You have to feel for Greene in this situation, but at the same time can't blame the Rangers for attempting to void his contract given that it seemed like he'd be missing a significant chunk of time. He's now back on the market, but he'll clearly have to prove to be healthy and in the right mindset before any team gives him a look.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 2/22, 1:32 PM CT
Updating an earlier report, the Rangers may end up attempting to void Khalil Greene's contract, according to the Dallas Morning News' Evan Grant.

Our View: Greene signed a one-year deal, $750,000 deal with Texas in January but will not be reporting with the rest of the team's infielders on Tuesday do to his social anxiety disorder. It's been reported that he could end up being away from the team for a significant amount of time, though it's unclear whether or not the Rangers would have a case if they did indeed try to void his contract.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 2/22, 8:22 AM CT
Khalil Greene will not report to camp with the rest of Texas' infielders on Tuesday and could miss a significant amount of time as he deals with anxiety issues, according to Fox Sports.

Our View: This problem is nothing new for Greene, who was placed on the DL twice last year as a result of his social anxiety disorder. The Rangers could opt to sign another infielder, as Felipe Lopez is still on the market, though they do have capable backups in Esteban German and Joaquin Arias.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 1/13, 10:55 PM CT
According to the Dallas News, Khalil Greene has passed his physical, verifying his one-year deal with the Rangers.

Our View: Greene will earn $750,000 next year and may have a chance to make an impact with the Rangers. He had a horrible season with the Cardinals last year battling physical ailments, mental issues and overall ineffectiveness, but will get a fresh start in Texas. He'll likely come off the bench as a backup infielder.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 1/9, 11:00 PM CT
The Rangers have reportedly inked Khalil Greene to a one-year deal worth $750,000, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com. The deal is pending a physical, and he is expected to serve in a utility role.

Our View: Greene only batted .200 with six homers over 170 at-bats in a disappointing 2009 campaign with St. Louis, and will be looking to improve his stock with Texas in 2010. He could benefit from playing his home games at hitter-friendly Rangers Ballpark, assuming his personal issues are behind him.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 10/5, 12:33 PM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Khalil Greene will not be on the Cardinals postseason roster. He will be a free agent this winter.

Our View: Greene hit just .200 this season with 24 RBI in 170 at-bats. He also battled depression throughout the season. With the emergence of shortstop Brendan Ryan, the Cardinals will not be interested in bringing him back and he'll probably have a hard time getting anything more than a minor league deal.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 8/1, 5:07 PM CT
As expected, Khalil Greene has been activated from the 15-day DL, according to the Associated Press. Mitchell Boggs was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the roster.

Our View: Greene has been suffering from social anxiety disorder which limited him to only 47 games this season. Skipper Tony LaRussa considered starting Greene today, and he could work his way back into the lineup if his illness is under control.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 8/1, 11:49 AM CT
The Cardinals will activate infielder Khalil Greene (anxiety) from the 15-day DL on Saturday, MLB.com confirms.

Our View: Greene could see a decent amount of action over the next few days because Brendan Ryan (ankle) is out, but the former starting shortstop is expected to be only a bench player moving forward.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 7/31, 8:38 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals could activate shortstop Khalil Greene as early as Friday.

Our View: Greene, on the DL with anxiety issues for the second time this season, has been mashing the ball in Triple-A and with Thursday's injury to Brendan Ryan the Cards could get his bat in the lineup. In the last eight games of his rehab stint, Greene is 12-for-30 with four homers and eight RBI.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 7/30, 8:13 PM CT
MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals' infielder Khalil Greene is getting close to returning to the team. Greene could be activated by the team as soon as Tuesday, before the team begins its next road trip.

Our View: Greene has been absolutely destroying Triple-A pitching as of late to the tune of a .343 average and four home runs over the last ten games. He won't be an everyday guy when he returns, but he could provide some infield depth and a right handed bat off the bench.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 7/29, 9:12 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Khalil Greene homered for the second straight game on Tuesday in a rehab start with Triple-A Memphis.

Our View: Greene appears to be progressing during his second rehab stint for an anxiety disorder and the Cardinals plan to reevaluate him on Friday. Should he be mentally sound enough to contribute on the big league level, the Cards would likely bump overexposed infielder Joe Thurston off the 25-man roster to make room for Greene. However, with the acquisition of Matt Holliday and Mark DeRosa, he will have a tough time finding at-bats with the big club.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 7/19, 4:24 PM CT
According to the Twitter page of Cardinals' beat writer Joe Strauss, the team plans to promote rehabbing infielder Khalil Greene to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Greene has been rehabbing in Double-A while recovering from social anxiety disorder.

Our View: Strauss also indicates that Greene could rejoin the major league club for their next road trip if all goes well in Memphis. Greene has taken two different trips to the DL for anxiety, an he is not a reliable fantasy option in any format.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 7/16, 11:22 AM CT
According to the Twitter page of Springfield, Mo News-Leader reporter Matt Baker, Cardinals' infielder Khalil Greene is scheduled to begin a three-game rehab assignment with the Cardinals' Double-A affiliate on Friday. Greene is on the DL with social anxiety disorder.

Our View: Greene was already on the DL once with the disorder, and it looks like he will suffer from it for the rest of the season. His status for the rest of the season remains a mystery, but fantasy owners should not consider him an option until he proves he is capable of playing every day. There are more reliable options out there.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 6/29, 4:45 PM CT
As expected, Khalil Greene has been sent back to the 15-day DL, according to the Sports Network. Pitcher Clayton Mortensen was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to fill his spot on the roster.

Our View: He continues to suffer from social anxiety disorder. The illness already forced him to miss 19 games this season. He should remain stashed on fantasy rosters until further notice.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 6/29, 8:22 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that infielder Khalil Greene is likely headed to the disabled list with anxiety issues again.

Our View: After hitting three home runs in his first series back, at Kansas City, Greene went 0-for-13 in the Cardinals series against the Mets last week and has apparently suffered a setback. He wasn't much of a fantasy option anyway, but he might not be one at all until he can overcome these problems and stay on the field for a prolonged amount of time.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 6/28, 9:03 AM CT
According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Khalil Greene suffered a setback in his battle with anxiety on Saturday.

Our View: Greene went 0-for-13 against the Mets after homering in three straight games in the previous series against the Royals. The recent skid has apparently triggered his anxiety disorder and he will be a game-time decision for Sunday's game and likely many, many games after that. It seems whenever Greene struggles now it's a result of the disorder. Whether that's the case or not, Greene will likely lose playing time now that the Cardinals have acquired Mark DeRosa.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 6/22, 1:44 PM CT
Khalil Greene is "ok" after leaving Sunday's game in the fourth inning after being hit on the knee by a Gil Meche pitch, according to MLB.com. Green had homered in his previous at-bat, and homered in all three Cardinals games in Kansas City over the weekend.

Our View: Greene will be in the lineup on Monday night when the Cardinals take on the New York Mets and Tim Redding. He probably isn't worth a roster spot in any format yet, but if you are desperate there are probably worse people to add than Greene and his three-game home run streak. Until he proves he has gotten over the anxiety problems and inconsistency that have derailed his last two seasons, though, he is not a long term option.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 6/21, 4:17 PM CT
Khalil Greene exited Sunday's battle against Kansas City after being struck by a pitch on the right knee, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: He was replaced at shortstop by Joe Thurston. Greene's status is yet to be updated.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 6/20, 8:38 PM CT
Khalil Greene hit his second homer in as many days on Saturday as the Cardinals downed the Royals 7-1. Greene went 1-for-4 in the game with a run scored and three RBI.

Our View: Greene has been awesome since making his return to the lineup on Friday, but he still remains a fantasy enigma. He has shown the ability to be a solid fantasy shortstop/third baseman, but it is hard to tell if he can remain consistent over the rest of the year. If you really need an infielder, he may be worth a look, but don't be shocked if he struggles for large chunks of the season.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 6/20, 3:55 PM CT
As expected Khalil Greene is in the starting lineup for the Cardinals on Saturday. The game has yet to start due to rain in Kansas City.

Our View: The ball fouled off his foot in Friday's game is now officially no big deal and Greene will play third base and hit eighth for Tony LaRussa's Cardinals.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 6/20, 9:23 AM CT
According to MLB.com, Khalil Greene is fine after fouling a ball off his foot and leaving Friday night's game. He is available to play Saturday.

Our View: Greene said the bruised left foot was sore at first, but feels fine now. Expect to see him in the lineup today seeing as how he was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and a homer before exiting in the fifth inning. It's obviously a little too early to tell if his head is right, but he appears to be getting himself back on track after landing on the DL with severe anxiety issues.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 6/19, 11:25 PM CT
Khalil Greene exited Friday's game at Kansas City with a bruised foot, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Greene was fresh off the DL following his bout with anxiety issues. Joe Thurston replaced him at shortstop, and the severity of Greene's injury is yet to be determined.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 6/18, 4:37 PM CT
Khalil Greene has been activated from the disabled list, according to John Marecek of KTRS.

Our View: Hopefully Greene has sorted out his issues and is happy to be playing baseball again. He is not a fantasy option at this time, but look for him to gain third base eligibility as Cards manager Tony La Russa says he plans on using him there.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 6/17, 6:55 PM CT
The AP reports that Khalil Greene worked out with the Cardinals on Wednesday and is expected to be activated from the DL soon. He is recovering from social anxiety disorder.

Our View: Greene has also been working out at third base in his rehab assignment and that's where the Cards will try to squeeze him in when he is activated. Wherever he plays, he doesn't figure to have much fantasy value when he returns.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 6/15, 8:23 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that when shortstop Khalil Greene returns from the disabled list, it will be as a third baseman.

Our View: With the way Greene has struggled at short this season, and the way Brendan Ryan has excelled, the Cardinals apparently do not want to tempt fate and put Greene back at shortstop just because that's where he's always played. Coupled with the Cardinals disastrous third base play this season, the move seems to make sense. Of course, it only makes sense if Greene manages to avoid struggling there the way he did at short. This new position does not enhance his fantasy value, either.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 6/12, 7:09 PM CT
Khalil Greene has returned to St. Louis after two games in a rehab assignment, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: He will probably work out with the team, and then meet with officials to discuss his return to the active roster. GM John Mozeliak is optimistic regarding Greene's progress from an anxiety order. We will keep you posted on his status.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersTuesday 6/9, 8:49 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' shortstop Khalil Greene went 1-for-4 in his first rehab start with Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Greene struck out looking in the bottom of the eighth inning with the tying run on second base in the Redbirds' 2-1 loss to New Orleans.

Our View: Nice to see Khalil playing again, but it wasn't a great night at the plate for him. The social anxiety disorder he has been dealing with seems to be improving, but it is anyone's guess at this point when and if he will be able to return. The strikeout in the pressure situation is a little concerning, but hopefully Khalil can get things figured out in time to help the struggling Cards.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 6/8, 1:35 PM CT
The Cardinals have sent Khalil Greene to Triple-A Memphis to begin a rehab assignment for social anxiety disorder according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Greene has been a mystery for the Cardinals this season, struggling since opening day despite an amazing spring. There is no word on how long his rehab assignment will last nor on what capacity he will be used in once he returns to the big club. Keep him away from your fantasy teams until further notice.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 5/29, 2:18 PM CT
Updating a previous report, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals have placed shortstop Khalil Greene on the 15-day DL with social anxiety disorder.

Our View: The Cards were said to be in fact-gathering mode on Greene, and apparently they got all the facts they needed to put him on the DL. Maybe some time away from the game will do him some good, but he should not still be taking up any fantasy roster spots at this point.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 5/29, 9:20 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that the Cardinals are in "fact-gathering mode" in regards to Khalil Greene. Greene has been dealing with anxiety issues this season, and the Cardinals may be thinking about placing him on the DL.

Our View: This is an interesting situation for the Cards. Ryan Ludwick is expected to be activated today, and the Cardinals need a roster spot for him. Greene is obviously dealing with something, but he has to consent to being placed on the DL. We will keep you updated on this situation, but at this point Greene should not be a fantasy option for anyone.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 5/24, 7:38 AM CT
The Boston Globe is reporting that the St. Louis Cardinals are shopping Khalil Greene to the Red Sox. Greene has fallen down the depth chart while dealing with anxiety disorder.

Our View: Greene seems to have lost his job in St. Louis, and although the Sox could use a fill-in at short right now, Greene seems to be a terrible fit. If he is having trouble with anxiety in the city with the best fans in the league, there is no way he could function in Boston.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 5/20, 8:36 AM CT
Khalil Greene sat out another game Tuesday while dealing with anxiety-related issues, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He sat for the fifth time in six games.

Our View: Greene is going to deal with his issue on his own terms, and is being used as a utility man until he is deemed fit to return to the starting lineup. Brendan Ryan has been filling in at shortstop.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 5/18, 9:03 PM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals' manager Tony La Russa told Khalil Greene that he will be used more like a utility player for the next few days or until he gets more comfortable at the plate.

Our View: To say Greene's tenure so far in St. Louis has been rough would be an understatement. He is hitting .204 on the year, and many people are wondering if his .213 average last season is about all you can expect from him. If he is on your fantasy team, you may want to sit him until he gets things figured out.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 5/6, 7:11 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Khalil Greene is back in the lineup on Wednesday and manager Tony La Russa says that he does not have any restrictions. He had missed the last week with a sore arm.

Our View: Greene has not been good on offense or defense has he had already committed four errors and is hitting only .209 at the dish. One positive note is that his nine strike outs have been matched by nine walks this season.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersTuesday 5/5, 7:47 AM CT
Khalil Greene took infield Monday and made game-speed throws to test how his sore forearm has recovered, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Greene said his arm "felt normal and feels good," and he could be given the green light to return to the lineup Tuesday.

Our View: Greene has been able to pinch hit for the last week but unable to play the field. It sounds like that could change as early as today.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 5/2, 11:08 AM CT
Shortstop Khalil Greene remains out on Saturday due to a sore right forearm. Brian Barden will start in his place, the Washington Post confirms. Greene is day-to-day.

Our View: Greene pinch-hit on Thursday, but his injury gives him trouble when he throws. Barden is getting a look at shortstop after Tyler Greene struck out three times on Friday night.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 4/29, 5:08 PM CT
MLB.com reports that Khalil Greene is not in the lineup on Wednesday due to a sore right forearm. He is expected to be out for the next two or three days. Brendan Ryan figures to start in his place.

Our View: Apparently he is having a bigger issue with throwing the ball than swinging a bat so he may get called upon to pinch hit. Greene has already committed five errors in the field and is hitting just .219.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersTuesday 4/28, 7:52 AM CT
Skipper Tony LaRussa indicated that Khalil Greene will likely return to the starting lineup tonight at Atlanta after being benched in favor of Brendan Ryan Monday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: LaRussa noted that he went with Ryan due to his solid track record offensively against the Braves at Turner Field, but he likely benched Greene as he already made five fielding errors this season.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 4/17, 11:29 AM CT
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Khalil Greene is not in the Cardinals' lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs. Brian Barden will start at shortstop.

Our View: Greene is a career 1-for-18 off of Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano, and manager Tony La Russa likes to play the match-ups. Greene has played in every game so far this season.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 4/12, 5:37 PM CT
Khalil Greene went 3-for-4 while hitting second in the Cardinals lineup in Sunday's 3-0 win over Houston. The shortstop accounted for three singles, a run scored, an RBI and his first stolen base of the season in the win.

Our View: Whoever is hitting second in front of Albert Pujols, typically finds his way on base. Unfortunately, that player has rotated almost every time out for Tony LaRussa's Cardinals. Greene has not enjoyed the same success this season as he had this spring, but today's performance may be what he needed to heat up.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 4/11, 12:53 PM CT
Khalil Greene will get his first day off Saturday, as the shortstop is sitting versus Roy Oswalt, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Brendan Ryan is starting in place of Greene, who is 2-for-16 in his career against Oswalt.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 4/2, 12:16 PM CT
Khalil Greene hit cleanup Wednesday and is hitting fifth for the Cards today, and it's possible the shortstop could find himself in those lineup spots often this season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Manager Tony La Russa said that Greene could be a fit for cleanup against a lefthanded starter, and the skipper added that he "Could use him there against a righthander, too."

Our View: Greene is batting .406 with a .970 OPS this spring and could be in line for a nice bounce-back year, especially if he finds himself in the heart of the Cardinals order more times than not.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 3/30, 4:36 PM CT
Khalil Greene went 2-for-4 while hitting clean-up behind Albert Pujols in Monday's 2-1 win over Florida. The shortstop is now hitting .418 this spring.

Our View: Greene has, surprisingly, been the most consistent bat in the Cardinals lineup this spring. It seems very unlikely that he would serve as "protection" for Pujols in the regular season, but if the outfielders continue to struggle in that spot, he may get a chance. Either way, Greene has boosted his fantasy value with a very strong spring.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 3/26, 3:10 PM CT
The Cardinals and shortstop Khalil Greene fell to the Mets 9-5 on Thursday, but Greene did all he could, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. He is now hitting .404 this spring.

Our View: Obviously, Greene won't hit like this in the regular season, but it's also unlikely he'll hit .213 this year like he did last year. He could provide solid fantasy value if he can get his batting average to, say, .260 and hit more than 20 home runs as a shortstop.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 3/26, 7:55 AM CT
Cardinals shortstop Khalil Greene will likely be the team's sixth-place hitter in the lineup, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Greene has been hitting very well this spring, with a .396 average. Hitting in the six hole should allow him ample RBI opportunity and a look in NL-only leagues and deeper mixed leagues.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 3/25, 3:18 PM CT
Khalil Greene went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Houston.

Our View: He is hitting .396 with 15 RBI in spring action. He also turned a double play on defense today. Greene looks to bounce back this season following a disappointing 2008 campaign, and could be a nice value pick in fantasy drafts.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 3/16, 4:18 PM CT
Shortstop Khalil Greene was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI as the Cardinals fell to the Tigers 7-6 on Monday.

Our View: Greene is having an impressive spring with 12 RBI, five doubles, and a .447 batting average through 44 at-bats. Following last season, he is likely being ignored in most drafts, but he is in a better situation in St. Louis and could be do for a bounce back year.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 3/13, 3:25 PM CT
Khalil Greene was 2-for-3 on Friday and hit his first home run of the spring. He drove in his eighth and ninth runs and raised his average to a whopping .367.

Our View: Greene looks like he's feeling comfortable with his new team and is showing signs of the player he was in 2007 when he hit 27 home runs and drove in almost 100 runs. He's a decent late option fantasy shortstop as long as the 2008 Khalil Greene doesn't come creeping back.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 3/7, 3:02 PM CT
Khalil Greene doubled in two runs with his only hit of the day as the Cardinals beat the Astros 5-1.

Our View: So far, so good regarding Greene's fit with his new team. He is hitting .350 with seven RBI and a stolen base in 20 at bats.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 3/6, 3:57 PM CT
Khalil Greene went 1-for-3 with two RBI in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mets. His hit was a single.

Our View: Greene now has five RBI in the Grapefruit League. Greene's production should benefit by leaving pitcher-friendly PETCO Park and while playing on a better offensive team, but he should be drafted as a No. 2 fantasy shortstop based on his poor track record with durability.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 2/16, 10:40 PM CT
Manager Tony La Russa spent a large part of Monday with new shortstop Khalil Greene, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "There is always something else to learn. I'm capable of doing a lot better than I've done in the past. I know that much," Greene said.

Our View: Greene is the biggest free-agent that the Cardinals have brought in to date. Considering he hit .213 last season, that's probably not saying much for the team's offseason. Greene has nowhere to go but up, and La Russa's focus on him should only work in his favor.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 12/4, 11:57 PM CT
Khalil Greene's trade to St. Louis has been finalized, according to the Cardinals' official site. The Padres are to receive pitcher Mark Worrell and another pitcher to be named later.

Our View: The Padres are going to kick in at least $1 million of Greene's salary, which must be approved by the commissioner's office.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 12/4, 7:16 AM CT
ESPN confirms that Khalil Greene will be dealt to St. Louis.

Our View: The players involved in the deal are yet to be revealed, but the Padres are likely to get pitching help (right-handed reliever) in exchange for Greene, as well as dump his $6.5 million salary. Greene should benefit from a fresh start with the Cardinals, namely in the power department.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 12/3, 11:42 PM CT
Khalil Greene apparently is headed to St. Louis in exchange for two relief prospects, according to the New York Post.

Our View: It is still unclear if the Padres will have to eat any of Greene's $6.5 million salary for 2009 or who the pitchers are that the Cardinals would part with.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 12/3, 9:17 PM CT
It is believed that Khalil Greene will be traded prior to the start of the winter meetings on Monday, according to the New York Post. His destination is unknown, but it is rumored that he could be heading to Baltimore or St. Louis.

Our View: The Padres want to clear Greene's salary of $6.5 million for 2009 after he struggled with a .213 average and just 35 RBI in 105 games in 2008.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 12/3, 11:13 AM CT
Despite their need for a shortstop, the Detroit Tigers are not interested in acquiring San Diego's Khalil Greene, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Our View: The Padres want to move Greene and his $6.5 million salary this year, and rightfully so. We're somewhat fascinated with the interest in Greene around baseball, as his best season was his rookie year in 2004 when he hit .273 with a .349 OBP. Since then, however, he's played in more than 121 games and had more than 440 at-bats just once, and has had an OBP over .300 just one time as well. He hit 27 home runs in 2007, but that was the only time he hit more than 15. In 389 at-bats last year, his OPS was an embarrassing .599.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 11/26, 7:09 AM CT
The Cardinals will have options at shortstop if they miss out on top free agents Rafael Furcal, Orlando Cabrera, and Edgar Renteria, as they can trade for Khalil Greene, Yunel Escobar, or potentiall Bobby Crosby if Furcal signs with Oakland, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: With that said, the Cardinals still have plenty of time, and options, to upgrade at shortstop.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersTuesday 11/25, 12:16 PM CT
Padres' GM Kevin Towers has indicated that he isn't currently involved in any plan to trade Khalil Greene, according to Sports Illustrated. Towers said, "I don't anticipate anything happening with Khalil anytime soon."

Our View: The Padres recently offered Greene to the Orioles, but they shot down the deal as they didn't want to part with Garrett Olson for the oft-injured shortstop.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 11/21, 4:12 PM CT
The Orioles have turned down a trade proposal of Garrett Olson for Khalil Greene (Padres), according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: Greene would fill a void at shortstop for Baltimore, but has had trouble staying healthy, which likely factored into the Orioles' rejection of the deal.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 11/7, 11:26 AM CT
The Orioles remain interested in Khalil Greene, but he is not ranked high on their target list of shortstops, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Our View: The Orioles would prefer to get a longtime solution at the position, and Greene is eligible to become a free agent after the 2009 season. He has a poor track record with durability as well.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 11/6, 6:22 PM CT
Despite a rumor that is floating out there, Khalil Greene will not be joining the Reds any time soon, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We've still got (Alex) Gonzalez," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. "If he's not healthy, we've got options with (Jeff) Keppinger and (Paul) Janish."

Our View: Greene will look to resurrect his career in '09 after falling to .213 with 10 home runs in 389 AB, due to injury, a season after he blasted 27 home runs and knocked in 97 for the Padres.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 11/5, 10:21 AM CT
The Blue Jays are the latest team to garner interest in Padres' infielder Khalil Greene, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. It was previously noted that the Orioles, Reds, and Tigers are interested in him.

Our View: Padres' GM Kevin Towers noted that trading Greene would likely be in a deal separate from Jake Peavy. Greene has a poor track record with durability, but provides solid power at shortstop when healthy, as he crushed 27 homers in 2007.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 11/3, 11:45 PM CT
The San Diego Union Tribune reports that the Orioles, Reds and Tigers are among those interested in shortstop Khalil Greene. He is guaranteed $6.5 million next season.

Our View: Greene hit just .213 in 389 at-bats last season, however he is only a year removed from 27 home runs and 97 RBI.

Mike Weiner of the major league players association has said that the grievance the Padres are pursuing against shortstop Khalil Greene likely will not be heard before spring training, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The club is attempting to recover up to $1.47 million in salary paid after Greene's self-inflicted hand injury ended his season on July 30. Padres CEO Sandy Alderson has said the grievance goes beyond trying to recover salary. "In the larger sense, it's about deterring this kind of conduct in the future because the consequences can be critical to a team," he said.

Our View: There is precedent to this, as pitcher Doyle Alexander won a grievance in 1982 after the Yankees tried to recover salary paid while he was sidelined for two months as a result of a fractured knuckle that he suffered after punching a dugout wall. You've got to wonder if it is worth "sending a message" when this will likely alienate Greene, as well as possibly other players on the team, as well.

The Padres are expected to file a grievance against Khalil Greene for missing the final two months of the season, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Our View: On a pro-rated basis, that could leave as much as $1.47 million of his $4.5 million salary in dispute. He broke his hand while punching a storage cabinet at PETCO Park.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 7/31, 5:33 PM CT
Padres shortstop Khalil Greene could miss the rest of the season after fracturing his hand punching a storage chest, according to Padres.com. Greene also may face disciplinary action. "I need to get more of the facts of what happened, the nature of the injury before we decide what to do moving forward," San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said.

Our View: Greene's forgettable season just got more forgettable. He and his .213 batting average and .260 on-base percentage have no business being near fantasy rosters.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 7/31, 7:22 AM CT
Khalil Greene injured his left hand Wednesday night when he punched a storage chest near the dugout after an at-bat in which he fouled a ball off his shin, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's not good," Greene said of his left hand, which was discolored and swollen. The shortstop admitted that his outburst had more to do with his season-long slump than the pain he was in after fouling the ball off his shin.

Our View: Some Padres players said they feared Greene's hand could be fractured. He will be evaluated today. Luis Rodriguez will fill in at short while Greene is out.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 7/21, 9:50 PM CT
Khalil Greene went 1-for-5 on Monday night against the Reds. He missed the previous game due to tightness in his lower back.

Our View: The back injury obviously wasn't serious.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 7/14, 4:22 PM CT
The Cubs have recently inquired about the availability of Khalil Greene, the San Diego Union-Tribune notes. The report says that Greene will stick with the Padres because his trade value has fallen too low.

Our View: We're not sure why the Cubs would want Greene when they have Ryan Theriot, Mark DeRosa, Ronny Cedeno, and Mike Fontenot up the middle. Greene would add pop to that list, but that's about it.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersThursday 6/26, 6:38 PM CT
Khalil Greene hit a solo home run on Thursday, his eighth home run of the year for the Padres.

Our View: Greene has been solid in June hitting .278 with three home runs helping to erase a .196 average in May. He is still a long way from where he was expected to be, but he is moving in the right direction.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersWednesday 6/11, 11:42 PM CT
Khalil Greene had two hits, including his sixth home run of the year, to knock in his 25th run of the season while pushing his average up to .217.

Our View: Greene will have to have a whole lot of nights like this one to bring his numbers anywhere close to last years levels (27 HR, 95 RBI) considering his production thus far. Last years efforts may end up being a career best season, but he is still a much better hitter than he has shown to this point.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 5/23, 12:01 AM CT
Khalil Greene hit two solo home runs for the Padres on Thursday to push his season total to five.

Our View: Greene has raised his average from .210 to .229 the past 10 games as he has produced two hits in five games during that stretch as he seeks to reestablish himself as one of the top power hitting shortstops in the National League.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersTuesday 5/13, 10:04 PM CT
Khalil Greene went deep for the third time this season on Tuesday night on his way to three RBI for the Padres.

Our View: Greene has gotten off to a very slow start after last years power breakout, so if you can there is likely still time to pry away Greene at a reasonable cost from a dissatisfied owner.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 5/11, 8:16 PM CT
Khalil Greene homered against Colorado rookie Greg Reynolds in his major league debut, leading the Padres to a 6-1 victory on Sunday.

Our View: It was only the second home run of the season for Greene, who has struggled in the first six weeks. The Padres' shortstop has 14 RBI, seven runs scored and is hitting a puny .209 on the year.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 5/4, 9:49 AM CT
Khalil Greene left Saturday's game against Florida in the seventh inning because of left-eye irritation, according to CBSsports. He is listed as day-to-day.

Our View: This doesn't sound serious, but there is always concern that the irritation could affect his vision at the plate. He is only hitting .220 with one homer and 11 RBI over 31 games, and is worth sitting for the time being if you have a favorable option to take his place.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSunday 4/20, 7:33 PM CT
Khalil Greene was 3-for-5 in Sunday's win over Randy Johnson and Arizona. The power hitting shortstop has suffered a power outage this April. Until his two runs on Sunday the shortstop had a total of two runs scored in the teams first 18 games.

Our View: Greene isn't going to wow fantasy managers with his average, nor is he a threat to steal. His ability to record 20 home runs and 60 RBI is why managers in deep mixed formats have him in the starting lineup.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 4/7, 7:27 PM CT
Khalil Greene beat out two hits on Monday, one being a triple, as he knocked in three runs for the Padres. Greene continues to be an undervalued power option at shortstop who may not match his 27 home runs of a year ago, but the 97 RBI he plated last year could be threatened once again.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersMonday 2/18, 7:15 PM CT
Khalil Greene, after hinting that he might leave San Diego when his recently signed 2-year deal is up, has now changed his tune and wants to play his entire career in SD according to a report by AP. "Ideally, I can stay here for the rest of my career as a baseball player. There's nowhere else I would really rather play than San Diego." The team will engage Greene this off-season and try to sign him to a long-term deal if he can remotely approach his 27 HR, 97 RBI form of last season.

The Padres agreed to terms with Greene on a two-year contract worth $11 million, according to a report Tuesday on the San Diego Union-Tribune's web site. According to the newspaper, Greene will receive $4.5 million this year and $6.5 million in 2009. The Padres and Khalil Greene have agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The club had hoped to lock him up to a three- or four-year deal, but Greene wanted the shorter option. When Greene is able to stay healthy, like last season, he can provide plenty of power.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersSaturday 2/2, 9:39 PM CT
Khalil Greene and the Padres are reportedly closing in on a two-year contract worth roughly $11 million, according to the AP. Greene finally stayed healthy in 2007 and slugged a career-high 27 homers with 97 RBI. However, given his injury-stricken past, he still carries some risk on draft day, which could make him a solid value pick in the later rounds.
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 11/9, 10:54 AM CT
The Padres would like to ink Khalil Greene to a contract extension this offseason. "He's one of our better players, and we'd like him to be here for some time," GM Kevin Towers said in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Greene hit 27 homers and 44 doubles while driving in 97 runs in 2007, though he also batted just .254 with a .291 OBP.

Khalil Greene, who is hitting just .217 on the year, sat for the second straight game on Sunday, according to the AP. It's unclear when he'll return to action, but with the way he's been hitting, you don't want him in your starting lineup, anyway.

Khalil Greene says his finger is improving but he's not ready to call it 100 percent yet, the Padres official site reports. "It's fine to do what I need to do," Greene said Thursday. "I can't say it feels like it's not there at all. I do feel it occasionally. It doesn't play a factor in my swing, which is the only thing that I care about. On the field, if it doesn't bother me, it's a non-factor."
Khalil Greene, SS, Texas RangersFriday 2/23, 11:59 AM CT

Khalil Greene's left middle finger is still sore six months after he injured it, according to the AP. However, he says it's not an issue. "It's still sore when I swing," Greene said. "It's in a loosening phase. It's hard to gauge because all the weather has been sub-50 degrees. When it was warm, it felt good ... There's still some sense of soreness, but it's not major. It's about normal."

Greene had his most challenging hitting session yesterday since he went on the disabled list Aug. 18, and although manager Bruce Bochy said Greene "didn't look quite as comfortable," he thinks Greene is almost there. "I think he has turned the corner and is going to get better every day," Bochy said. "It should be real soon, two to three days, where I'd feel comfortable putting him in."
