Brandon League, P, Seattle MarinersWednesday 1/20, 11:21 PM CT
According to MLB.com, the Mariners have avoided arbitration with reliever Brandon League, agreeing on a one-year deal.

Our View: League was acquired from the Blue Jays for right-handed pitcher and former first-round draft choice Brandon Morrow in December. He earned $640,000 last season and submitted a $1.325 million request through salary arbitration while the Mariners offered $900,000. There is talk of him possibly fitting in at the back end of the M's rotation, as he is a solid groundball specialist.

Brandon League appears to be on his way to Seattle in exchange for Brandon Morrow, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View: League is an extreme ground-ball pitcher, and would fit in quite nicely at the pitcher-friendly Safeco Field. In 202.2 career innings, however, he has just a 4.09 ERA. Not bad, but not great for a reliever. He could make more sense as a starter in Seattle's revamped rotation. Stay tuned.

Brandon League has agreed to a one-year deal with the Blue Jays worth $640,000, according to the Associated Press.

Our View: League holds little fantasy value, but proved to be an effective middle reliever for the Blue Jays last season, with a 1.30 WHIP and 2.18 ERA over 33 innings of work.

The Blue Jays recalled Brandon League from Triple-A Syracuse Saturday. He replaced outfielder Kevin Mench on the roster.

Our View: It's been a long time since League was considered a top notch relief prospect, though he is still just 25. He posted a 6.75 ERA in two games earlier this year with the Jays but had a 3.93 ERA and 8.4 K/9 rate for Syracuse.

The Blue Jays placed Brandon League on the DL Sunday because of a pulled oblique. "It's been nagging him for the last few days," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said in the AP. "That's why he wasn't pitching." League hasn't appeared since last Saturday.

The Blue Jays recalled Brandon League from Triple-A Syracuse over the weekend. He had been out all season with a shoulder problem that had sapped his velocity. League posted a 2.53 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 33 appearances last year when his fastball was in the high 90s. His heat is supposed to be in the 93-95 mpg range now, so he could still be effective.

Brandon League was optioned to Triple-A on Sunday, according to the AP. He's been dealing with a strained lat, and he's seen the velocity on his fastball fall to the high 80mph range. "I think it was the eight weeks of not throwing," said League.

Brandon League has lost velocity on his fastball, and it's possible that he might not break camp with the Blue Jays, according to the Toronto Sun. He's been dealing with a strained lat muscle this spring. "Physically, he is fine," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said yesterday. "Our trainers checked him out and everything is fine. Our doctors checked him out and gave him an MRI and everything is fine."

The Blue Jays are discussing having Brandon League, who is recovering from a strained lat muscle, begin the year on the DL, according to the Blue Jays website.
