Manny Delcarmen, P, Boston Red SoxTuesday 1/19, 5:13 PM CT
According to Amalie Benjamin on Twitter, the Red Sox have avoided arbitration with relievers Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez.

Our View: Delcarmen, who finshed 2009 with a 5-2 record, 4.53 ERA and bloated 1.64 WHIP, will earn $905,000 plus an extra 15K if he makes 65 or more appearances. Financial details are not yet available for Ramirez, who fared much better last season with a 7-4 record, 2.84 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

According to WEEI.com, Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen and Rocco Baldelli will not be on the ALDS roster.

Our View: Delcarmen is banged after being involved in a car accident on Saturday and hasn't pitched effectively since the All Star break. Baldelli is still dealing with a hip injury that just won't seem to heal, so it looks like Paul Byrd, Brian Anderson and Joey Gathright will be added to the roster as outfield and pitching depth.

After being involved in a minor car accident last Saturday, Manny Delcarmen may not be ready to pitch in game one of the Red Sox division series match-up with the Angels on Thursday.

Our View: Stiffness he had in his neck and upper back is gone, however, and as long as he fares well in a Thursday bullpen session, he will be ready to pitch in the ALDS.

Manny Delcarmen would like to stay in Boston and would not be pleased if he was traded, according to HackswithHaggs.com. He said, "To me, I think it is always good when teams are asking about you and they want you. It made me feel really good when Theo Epstein and those guys turned it down right away. Because I feel like I am a part of the team here and I am used to being here. To start fresh somewhere (else), I would not be too happy about that. It is cool to know that Boston wants to keep me here."

Our View: The Red Sox recently inquired about Nationals' infielder Nick Johnson, but the Sox rejected a proposal when Washington asked for Delcarmen in exchange. Boston is a contender in the AL East while the Nationals currently have the worst record in the majors at 13-30.

Manny Delcarmen gave up an alarming five runs while registering just one out in Game 4 of the ALCS. He walked three batters and gave up two hits in a dreadful portion of the sixth inning.

Our View: Delcarmen had thrown four shutout innings in this postseason prior to Tuesday.

The flu bug has claimed Manny Delcarmen. The Red Sox sent the reliever home on Tuesday night, the AP reports. Catcher Jason Varitek has been dealing with the illness for a few days.

Our View: AL-only fantasy managers might find Delcarmen to be useful, but this shouldn't affect too many squads. We imagine Delcarmen will be back within a few days.

Manny Delcarmen slipped while making a defensive play in Friday's game and had to exit the contest, according to the Boston Globe. "I just slipped a little bit on the mound," he said. "I have a little bit of tendinitis on my knees anyway, so any time I slip, it might flare it up a little bit, but I'm good. They probably won't let me throw for a couple of days." Hopefully, this really is just a minor ailment, but we'll update you as new information becomes available.

Manny Delcarmen earned a start in place of ailing Josh Beckett (back spasms), going two scoreless innings without allowing a hit or a walk as the Red Sox went on to lose 5-2. Thus far it appears Delcarmen ranks high on Boston's list for potential options, be it out of the bullpen or otherwise. Stay tuned.

Last year, the Red Sox usually turned to Hideki Okajima on days where Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable. This year, Manny Delcarmen could get his shot at a few stray saves, as well. "We've had a number of conversations already this winter, to challenge him with an increased role, increased importance, not to think that last year's ERA or performance that he had is the Manny Delcarmen," pitching coach John Farrell told the Boston Globe. "I think there's still room for improvement, certainly with his fastball command, that can continue to improve. I'd like to think at some point we can begin to expose him in that closer's role. And I say that because we probably are going to take a similar approach with the use of Jonathan this year, so there are going to be opportunities that both Manny and Hideki will again assume."

Manny Delcarmen said he woke up "six or seven" days ago with soreness and inflammation at the base of his right thumb, according to the Boston Globe. Although he's been able to play through it thus far, the pain has affected his accuracy. As a result, the Red Sox plan to rest him until the problem subsides. "My four-seamer right now I can't throw it away on the corner, everything keeps running in," Delcarmen said. "When I want to throw my curveball the way I want it, that's when I really feel it. I'd rather say something now than have it get worse and become a big issue later."
