Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 3/9, 9:47 AM CT
Dustin McGowan (shoulder) threw a brief batting practice session on Tuesday morning, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.

Our View: McGowan threw 15 pitches, eight of which were strikes. It's nice to see him continue to progress, and he certainly has the potential to be a late-round deep sleeper; keep in mind that he went 12-10 with a 4.08 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 169.2 innings in 2007, his last fully healthy season.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 3/5, 4:39 PM CT
Dustin McGowan will throw a simulated game on either Tuesday or Wednesday, according to MLB writer Jordan Bastian's twitter page.

Our View: McGowan is progressing from offseason shoulder surgery. He has been throwing bullpen sessions, but it remains uncertain when he may throw in a real game. The talented hurler remains a wait-and-see prospect for 2010.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 2/28, 4:23 PM CT
Dustin McGowan threw to live hitters off a mound Sunday, according to TSN.

Our View: This marked the first time McGowan pitched in a year and a half due to shoulder surgery to repair a frayed labrum. He also had surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his right knee. He felt good while throwing 25-30 pitches today, and will have a chance to break camp with the Jays, barring a setback. As for his fantasy value, the talented hurler is a wait-and-see prospect.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 2/19, 11:29 AM CT
Dustin McGowan (shoulder/knee) will throw his sixth bullpen session tomorrow, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.

Our View: The talented-yet-fragile McGowan has made nice progress so far this offseason. The way things are going, he may be ready to go by the start of the season and would likely be in the mix for a starting spot with a number of others.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 1/27, 1:59 PM CT
Dustin McGowan (shoulder, knee) is scheduled to throw off a mound on Friday, according to the Canadian Press' Shi Davidi.

Our View: McGowan, 27, is still pretty young and has fine potential but will have to prove he can stay healthy before contending for a spot in Toronto's starting rotation. Given that he's out of player options, you can expect him to open the 2010 season on the DL since he probably won't be ready for the majors at that time.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 12/13, 1:31 PM CT
Dustin McGowan has signed a one-year deal with the Jays worth $500,000, according to ESPN.

Our View: McGowan did not see the hill in 2009 while recovering from July shoulder surgery. He is uncertain to be ready for the start of the 2010 campaign as well, meaning he will be a wait-and-see prospect in fantasy leagues.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 9/13, 9:53 AM CT
According to MLB.com, injured Blue Jays' starter Dustin McGowan has been throwing regularly off flat ground in Florida. McGowan has missed the entire 2009 season while recovering from shoulder and knee surgeries.

Our View: McGowan's return has been slow and steady this season, and he should be ready for spring training next season. McGowan was solid last season, and he figures to be back in the rotation for th Jays next year.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/23, 11:26 AM CT
According to Jordan Bastian's Twitter account, Dustin McGowan underwent right knee surgery two to three weeks ago.

Our View: McGowan is still recovering from surgery to repair a frayed labrum over a year ago, and it's unclear how he may have injured his knee. His recovery has been moving very slowly, but it seems strange that the club would hide an additional surgery. We will update the detail as they surface.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/24, 8:06 PM CT
Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi indicated that Dustin McGowan's recovery from surgery to repair a frayed labrum has not been going well, according to MLB.com.

Our View: Ricciardi does not know when McGowan may be ready to return, and said he has been struggling and recovering at a slower rate. McGowan should continue to be ignored as a fantasy pitcher.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 5/5, 11:35 AM CT
Dustin McGowan has a slim chance of returning this year, but GM J.P. Ricciardi said he's willing to keep the righty out all season, if necessary, according to MLB.com. "He's playing catch now," Ricciardi said. "There's no reason to push him. I think his body will tell us how far he can go and when. Ideally, the same thing as (Shaun) Marcum -- psychologically get him on the mound this year. But, if worst-case scenario it's for next year, then that's OK, too."

Our View: McGowan shouldn't be counted on by fantasy owners this year, but if he can make a full recovery he will be someone fantasy owners want to keep tabs on.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 11/26, 4:25 PM CT
Dustin McGowan underwent shoulder surgery four months ago and is now about to start throwing again, according to the Blue Jays official web site. "I've got a big itch right now to start throwing," McGowan said. "It's driving me crazy every day."

Our View: McGowan started only 19 games in 2008 and had a record of 6-7. The starter will be ready to go in spring training and should be ready to go when the 2009 season begins.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/31, 5:51 PM CT
Dustin McGowan underwent surgery on the frayed labrum in his right shoulder, and the news was positive as additional work was not needed, meaning he should be ready for Spring Training, according to MLB.com.

Our View: McGowan had average numbers - a 6-7 record and 4.37 ERA, but was useful in AL-only leagues. He should be good to go next season.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 7/26, 1:25 PM CT
Blue Jays RHP Dustin McGowan will have season-ending surgery Thursday to repair fraying of the labrum in his shoulder, according to CBSSports.com.

Our View: McGowan, who is 6-7 with a 4.37 ERA in 19 starts, has not pitched since leaving a July 8 game against Baltimore after four innings, saying that the ongoing pain had become too much to bear. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day. Last September, an MRI revealed McGowan had a partial tear in his rotator cuff. Tests done this month revealed no further damage, but Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said Saturday doctors will take a closer look when they operate on McGowan.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/15, 7:16 PM CT
Dustin McGowan will not have to undergo surgery on his right shoulder after an MRI revealed that there was no new damage to his arm, according to BlueJays.com.

Our View: McGowan will start a rehab program soon, but there is no timetable for his return, so it may be a while before you get him back on your fantasy squad.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/10, 10:54 AM CT
Dustin McGowan has a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and will miss a minimum of four weeks, according to the Associated Press. "Right now, we're probably looking at longer than four weeks," said Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi.

Our View: McGowan had fantasy value in deep AL-only leagues, with a respectable 4.37 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. Torn rotator cuffs are serious injuries, so expecting him back this season may be wishful thinking.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 7/9, 4:04 PM CT
Dustin McGowan has landed on the 15-day DL due to stiffness in his right shoulder, according to the AP. The team recalled Brian Wolfe from Triple-A Syracuse as an adjoining move.

Our View: McGowan was forced to leave his start on Tuesday due to the ailment after only four innings and 66 pitches.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 7/8, 9:29 PM CT
Dustin McGowan left his Tuesday night start with stiffness in his shoulder. He will undergo an MRI on Wednesday morning according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.

Our View: McGowan lasted four innings and gave up just two earned runs. We will keep you updated on his status.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 7/3, 12:04 AM CT
Dustin McGowan surrendered four earned runs on six hits over six innings in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Seattle, with one walk and five strikeouts.

Our View: McGowan falls to 6-7 with a 4.36 ERA. He is 1-3 over his last four starts, and has allowed four earned runs in three of the four over that span.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 6/27, 9:32 PM CT
Dustin McGowan allowed four earned runs on eight hits over 7.1 innings in Friday's 4-0 shutout loss to Atlanta, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Our View: He drops to 6-6 for the season, but has had some luck as of late, as he is 4-2 over his last seven starts. He is worth keeping active near the bottom of your roto-rotations.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 6/22, 4:24 PM CT
Dustin McGowan wasn't anywhere near his best on Sunday, but he hung on long enough to earn his sixth victory of the season. McGowan allowed four runs, three earned, with only two strikeouts over five innings.

Our View: McGowan hasn't been able to build upon the success that he flashed last season, but he continues to strikeout enough batters (74 in 94 innings) to be a useful starter in mixed leagues. The potential for growth is lurking.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 6/22, 11:07 AM CT
The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to end a seven-game losing streak today by sending RHP Dustin McGowan to the mound to battle with the Pittsburgh Pirates, sending Ian Snell to the hill, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: McGowan is 3-1 with a 4.02 ERA over his last five starts, although he is coming off a poor outing. On Tuesday, McGowan was reached for four earned runs and four hits in four innings of a 7-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed three home runs in the game after surrendering just four homers through his first 14 starts.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/18, 9:33 AM CT
Following his rough outing in Milwaukee on Tuesday night, Dustin McGowan is now 1-4 with a 6.27 ERA and 1.52 WHIP on the road. The right-hander is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 1.15 WHIP at home.

Our View: McGowan is looking like the 2006 version of Ervin Santana. The Jays hurler has the potential to be a top-30 fantasy hurler, but this inconsistency is a bit maddening.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/17, 1:30 PM CT
Dustin McGowan will battle the Brewers at Miller Park tonight, according to MLB.com. McGowan went 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA in five inter-league starts in 2007.

Our View: McGowan is 5-4 this season with a 3.92 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. He has allowed two or less earned runs in four of his last six starts, but will be hard-pressed to hold the Brewers to under two, especially on their home turf.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 6/11, 1:33 PM CT
Baseball Musings makes an interesting point regarding Dustin McGowan. McGowan, who has long had problems seeing in low-light conditions, visited a doctor during spring training and finally received his new glasses before a start May 30 against the Los Angeles Angels. He's gone 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in two night starts since donning the specs. "I can't see at night because of glare and shadows, so when they're giving signs, it's hard to see," McGowan said. "I think my catchers got tired of me crossing them up so I went and saw a doctor and a specialist for them. I might just wear them every game from here on out."

Our View: Hopefully we will see more consistency from McGowan. It worked for Rick Vaughan.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 6/10, 8:26 PM CT
Dustin McGowan loves pitching at home, and he showed it again on Tuesday. The right-hander went the distance in a 3-1 win over the Mariners. McGowan allowed five hits, walked two, and struck out seven. He is 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over six starts at the Rogers Centre this year.

Our View: If Dustin could do something about his 6.02 ERA on the road, we'd be looking at a darn good fantasy pitcher. McGowan has the stuff to be a top-30 hurler in mixed leagues, but he needs to even things out.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 6/5, 4:26 PM CT
Dustin McGowan had another rough outing on Thursday permitting five runs, on seven hits and two walks, to the Yankees in 5.1 innings on the hill. He ended up with a no-decision.

Our View: McGowan averaged 7.64 K/9 last season and this year that number has shrunk to 7.11 while his BB/9 has jumped from 3.24 to 3.55. A downturn in K, and an uptick in BB isn't a recipe for success, but McGowan should still be a solid arm for the Jays with upside.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 5/25, 3:30 PM CT
Dustin McGowan moved to 3-4 for the season in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Royals. He only surrendered one run on nine hits over seven innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Our View: He also lowered his ERA to 3.90. McGowan has now only allowed five earned runs over his last three starts. His fantasy stock is on the rise.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 5/20, 9:36 PM CT
Dustin McGowan allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. McGowan, who has won just once in his past six starts, walked four and struck out four in the loss.

Our View: McGowen pitched well enough to win but Angels starter John Lackey was better.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 5/20, 1:46 PM CT
Dustin McGowan is going to start against the Angels tonight in place of Roy Halladay, according to MLB.com. Hallday was scheduled to pitch tonight, but served an inning in relief out of the bullpen on May 18, and the team decided to move his next start to Saturday.

Our View: McGowan needs to bounce back, as he was lit up for nine runs in a mere 3.2 innings of work in his last start against Cleveland. Due to Halladay's move, McGowan will pitch tonight and Sunday, giving him two starts for the fantasy week.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 5/19, 8:22 AM CT
Dustin McGowan becomes a 2-start pitcher for Fantasy Week 8. With Roy Halladay making a relief appearance on Sunday, McGowan gets the Tuesday and Sunday starts.

Our View: Halladay will take Shaun Marcum's originally scheduled slot on Thursday, and since Marcum only went one inning on Sunday, he will take the mound on Wednesday in McGowan's original spot. Get all that?
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 5/15, 4:58 PM CT
Dustin McGowan rebounded somewhat from his horrific last start holding the Twins to just two runs in five innings. However, he walked five batters.

Our View: McGowan has had a bumpy ride on the road to fantasy dominance this season thanks to a high walk rate and a k/9 that about a full batter less. He has still been serviceable and figures to improve when he dials his control up.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 5/5, 9:06 PM CT
Dustin McGowan improved to 2-2 on the season with a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. The right-hander allowed no runs on four hits, walked no batters while striking out six.

Our View: A terrific outing for McGowan. He worked 7.1 solid innings and his command was spot on. The Jays rotation has been over-the-top good over the last week and with B.J. Ryan now cleared to work on back-to-back days Toronto is clear to take aim at the top of the AL East.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/30, 10:07 PM CT
Toronto RHP Dustin McGowan put his best effort on the mound against the Boston Red Sox this evening, but the relief effort let him down and he moves forward with no decision. McGowan pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on four hits.

Our View: McGowan allowed just one walk and struck out five, but reliever Scott Downs could not corral the save, allowing one run on three hits in 2/3 of an inning in the 9th to give Boston the win.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 4/25, 5:00 PM CT
Dustin McGowan was dominating for the first two innings of Thursday's loss to the Rays. The Jays' right-hander was throwing 98-mph fastballs and buckling the knees of Rays hitters when his velocity and command suddenly went south. The result was a fourth straight loss for the Jays and a second for the Toronto right-hander.

Our View: McGowan allowed five runs on four hits and a career-high seven walks in four-plus innings at Disney World's Champion Stadium on Thursday. The Jays starter will snap out of his April funk and when he does, you want him on your roster.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 4/24, 10:45 PM CT
Dustin McGowan had a brutal outing on Thursday as he walked seven batters on his way to his second loss of the season. McGowan allowed five runs, four earned, in four innings.

Our View: This was the first time in five starts that McGowan has allowed more than tree runs, and his seven walks tonight almost matched the nine he had in 24 innings previously. Look for him to bounce back next time on the hill.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 4/15, 6:37 PM CT
Dustin McGowan is better than his record, and as unlucky as he is good. The future ace is throwing consistently in the mid-90s and his array of pitches are as active as any right-hander in the league. He has allowed 21 hits in 17 innings and struck out 16 during that stretch.

Our View: The Jays have given him little run support and his task doesn't get any easier over his next three starts (Tigers, Rays, and Red Sox).
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 4/14, 9:23 PM CT
Dustin McGowan allowed 10 hits and three runs over six innings against the Orioles on Monday night. He also walked one, struck out five, and fell to 0-1, as the Blue Jays lost 4-3.

Our View: It wasn't McGowan's best outing, but he has pitched well enough to win in each of his three starts. Hopefully his luck changes soon.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/9, 9:47 PM CT
Young RHP Dustin McGowan pitched a stellar game against the Oakland Athletics this evening, but the relief pitching and failed to support his cause and kept him from a well-earned win. McGowan pitched just five innings and hurled a whopping 101 pitches in that short span, but 65 of those counted for strikes as McGowan allowed just two runs on seven hits, gathering three walks and an impressive seven strikeouts along the way. McGowan has been solid thus far and appears to be on track for a noteworthy season, if only the relief pitching would bring him home with a win.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 4/2, 7:53 PM CT
Toronot RHP Dustin McGowan is struggling with illness, apparently displaying the dreaded "flu-like symptoms" on Wednesday, and thus was sent back to the team's motel to rest, according to MLB.com. Manager John Gibbons believes McGowan will be good to go for his Thursday start against the Yankees, but the team will go with Shaun Marcum if his condition does not improve.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 3/30, 1:50 PM CT
The Toronto Sun reports that Dustin McGowan has the best pure "stuff" on this pitching staff, and with any confidence he will become a dominating presence in the league. McGowan isn't a secret among fantasy owners in the know, but he is still a mid-round steal if in fact he finds his strut this season.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 3/27, 3:38 PM CT
Dustin McGowan , the Jays No. 3 starter worked seven innings on Thursday, allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. McGowan is ready for the regular season after throwing 104 pitches.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysThursday 5/3, 4:15 PM CT
Dustin McGowan was called up from Triple-A on Thursday and will start tonight's game against the Indians.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysTuesday 5/1, 3:06 PM CT
The Blue Jays will call up Dustin McGowan from Triple-A start in place of the injured Gustavo Chacin on Thursday against the Indians, according to the Toronto Star. McGowan is 0-2 in five starts at Triple-A this year, but he sports a 1.64 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 22 innings. He struggled in his time with the Jays in 2006, holding a 7.24 ERA in 16 games (three starts).
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysMonday 2/19, 8:53 AM CT
Dustin McGowan is expected to begin the season starting for Triple-A Syracuse, according to the Toronto Sun. He has an option remaining, so they can send him down without passing him through waivers. "Going in, we've got guys stacked ahead of him, guys with experience," said manager John Gibbons. "We're still waiting for Dustin to come into his own. Yeah, sure things could happen if he pitches really well. But he's got to get innings one way or the other. If we were to take him as a long guy or a middle guy (out of the bullpen) where he might not work consistently, I think that sets him back. He needs to pitch."
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSunday 9/24, 6:01 AM CT
Dustin McGowan will probably start Tuesday in Detroit, taking over for injured ace Roy Halladay, according to the Blue Jays official site. "I think it's going to be McGowan," manager John Gibbons said. "It's not definite yet, but I think it'll be him."
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysWednesday 8/23, 1:28 PM CT
To make room on the roster for Gustavo Chacin, the Blue Jays optioned Dustin McGowan to Triple-A Syracuse after Tuesday's game, according to the offical team website. McGowan, has posted a 9.78 ERA in 19 1/3 innings at the big league level this season, will be recalled in September.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 8/4, 8:31 PM CT
The Jays have decided not to start Dustin McGowan on Saturday after all, as they recalled Francisco Rosario to make that start. McGowan will remain in the bullpen.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysSaturday 7/29, 12:00 PM CT
The Blue Jays recalled Dustin McGowan from Triple-A on Saturday to start against the A's, according to the AP. He'll replace the struggling Casey Janssen. In five relief appearances with Jays this year, McGowan holds a 7.94 ERA. With Syracuse, he was 3-5 with a 4.73 ERA in 20 games, with 13 starts.
Dustin McGowan, P, Toronto Blue JaysFriday 7/28, 11:11 AM CT
The Blue Jays are considering recalling Dustin McGowan from Triple-A Syracuse to take Casey Janssen's spot in the rotation as soon as Saturday, according to the official team website. "There's a chance [that will happen]," manager John Gibbons said. "It's not definite, but there's a good chance." McGowan, who has posted a 7.94 ERA in 5 2/3 innings with Toronto this season, is 4-5 with a 4.73 ERA for Syracuse.
