Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 2/1, 8:16 PM CT
Reed Johnson has passed his physical, making his one-year deal with the Dodgers official, according to Dylan Hernandez's (Los Angeles Times) twitter page.

Our View: Johnson fills the Dodgers' need for a fourth outfielder. His fantasy value will be limited, unless any of their starters suffer an injury.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 1/31, 2:54 PM CT
The Dodgers are closing in on a deal for outfielder Reed Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

Our View: Rosenthal goes as far as to say a deal might already be done. Slowed by injury in 2009, Johnson hit .255 in 165 at-bats for the Cubs.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 12/24, 12:55 PM CT
The Yankees are believed to be considering free agent outfielder Reed Johnson, according to the New York Post.

Our View: The Yankees are in need of another outfielder after trading Melky Cabrera to the Braves. Johnson is not likely to be an everyday solution, but he plays good defense and hits left-handed pitching well-enough to get some starts outright. Still, he's unlikely to become a serious fantasy option at 33.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 11/8, 9:25 AM CT
Reed Johnson would likely have to take a pay cut to return to the Cubs in 2010, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Our View: Something a soon-to-be 33-year-old journeyman outfielder would not be wise to do. Expect Johnson to go wherever the most dollars are at this point in his career.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 9/21, 5:53 PM CT
Reed Johnson has been activated from the 15-day DL following his recovery from a fractured left foot, according to the Sports Network.

Our View: Johnson could see playing time as the Cubs need depth in their outfield, but is just an option for NL-only leagues. He is batting .252 with four homers and 20 RBI over 147 at-bats this season.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 8/17, 10:14 AM CT
Reed Johnson (broken foot) is expected to be activated in time for the Cubs series at home against the Nationals next week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: He is slated to go out on a rehab assignment later this week, and will return for sure next week as long as everything goes well. In 147 at-bats for the Cubs this season, the reserve outfielder is hitting .252.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/30, 11:44 AM CT
Reed Johnson was officially placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken foot on Thursday.

Our View: Johnson will be out at least a month. Look for the Cubs to scour the market for a fourth outfielder before Friday's trading deadline.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 7/29, 5:28 PM CT
Reed Johnson will miss at least a month after breaking his left foot on Wednesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. No corresponding roster move has been announced.

Our View: This is not news the Cubs needed. At all. Reed's second stint on the DL in the last two months now necessitates even more playing for the middling Milton Bradley and Kosuke Fukudome. Expect the Cubs to now ramp up their efforts for a bat (with Josh Willingham as a distinct possibility).
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 7/29, 3:44 PM CT
MLBlogs.com reports that Cubs' outfielder Reed Johnson left Wednesday's game after three innings due to a bruised left foot.

Our View: Johnson fouled a ball off his foot and it was likely too painful for him to continue. Consider his status day-to-day.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/16, 9:16 PM CT
Reed Johnson went 2-for-5 with a RBI on Thursday night as the Cubs beat the Nationals 6-2 in Washington.

Our View: Johnson had been 0-for-6 since coming off the disabled list on July 6. He's doesn't play enough to warrant fantasy consideration in any format outside of very deep NL-only leagues, but he should give the Cubs offense a boost in the second half of the season.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/6, 6:23 PM CT
As expected, the Cubs activated Reed Johnson (back) from the DL on Monday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Our View: Johnson should return right back to his utility role in the outfield, platooning with Kosuke Fukudome in center and getting most of the starts against lefties, and also spelling the currently struggling Alfonso Soriano and Milton Bradley in left and right. With that said, Johnson should probably be rostered in most NL-only leagues but will not get quite enough at-bats to provide mixed-league value.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/6, 9:23 AM CT
Reed Johnson is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday, according to the Arlington Heights Daily Herald.

Our View: Johnson has been out since June 21 with back spasms. His return gives the Cubs outfield some of its depth back, and coupled with the returns of Aramis Ramirez and Angel Guzman, should really give the Cubs a boost they have sorely needed the past few weeks. He is not a good fantasy option in any format.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/2, 7:21 PM CT
Reed Johnson is set to start his minor league rehab assignment Friday with Single-A Peoria, according to MLBblogs.com. He has been recovering from lower-back spasms.

Our View: Johnson could return to the Cubs Monday, barring a setback. He is a career .283 hitter with some pop in his bat, but his fantasy value is limited as a reserve outfielder.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 6/24, 5:23 PM CT
Reed Johnson is expected to be placed on the 15-day DL due to an ailing back, according to MLBblogs.com. Ryan Freel (strained hamstring) is expected to be activated to fill his roster spot.

Our View: This is poor timing for Johnson to land on the shelf, as he generated four homers and 10 RBI over his last 18 games.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 6/21, 2:15 PM CT
According to the Chicago Tribune, Reed Johnson is not in the starting lineup for the Cubs on Sunday due to a sore back.

Our View: Johnson's back locked up on him, which is the only reason he's not in the game against Cleveland with a lefty on the mound. Kosuke Fukudome takes Johnson's place in the lineup, but doesn't hit lefties well at all, going just 2-for-9 against them this season.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 5/24, 6:09 PM CT
Reed Johnson hit a two-run homer, which accounted for all of Chicago's run on Sunday. It was his only hit in three at-bats, and the Cubs fell to the Padres 7-2.

Our View: This was Johnson's first homer of the season. He was a very productive utility player and spot starter last season, but has struggled in minimal at-bats this year. He's hitting just .237 and is a poor fantasy option in any format. The Cubs may be regretting the fact that they didn't keep Jim Edmonds around for another season.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 5/6, 10:13 PM CT
Reed Johnson hit a three-run triple on a 1-for-3 night as the Cubs won 6-3 in Houston on Wednesday. He was also able to draw a walk and score twice in the victory.

Our View: Johnson is not in the lineup on an every night basis, but he starts more often than he does not. Tonight's triple was his first extra base hit in 47 at bats. As a result, he holds little fantasy value.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/24, 1:46 PM CT
Reed Johnson is going to see more action in the Cubs' outfield with Milton Bradley (groin) ailing and Micah Hoffpauir struggling defensively in right field, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Manager Lou Piniella said, "I guess we are going to have to stay with our best defense and forget trying to get more offense, which means when Bradley does not play, I am going to have to put Reed Johnson in center field and put Kosuke Fukudome in right."

Our View: Johnson won't offer much power, but could hit for a solid average, and is worth a look for NL-only leagues with more starts in store for him while Bradley is out.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 3/5, 7:30 PM CT
Reed Johnson picked up a pinch-hit single for the Cubs in the ninth inning on Thursday, driving in two runs. He now has three RBI this spring.

Our View: Johnson will probably see more at-bats this season with Jim Edmonds and Felix Pie not being on the roster, but he still shouldn't a lot of fantasy value.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 9/6, 9:51 PM CT
Reed Johnson came through for manager Lou Piniella on Saturday night in the eight-hole. Prior to the game, Piniella talked about how the slumping lineup needed shook up. Johnson replaced Jim Edmonds in center and went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Our View: He is hitting .305 and may continue to see regular duty as long as he produces. Edmonds is coming off an August that saw him hit just .200.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 8/2, 2:57 PM CT
Reed Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base while scoring two runs in the Cubs 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Our View: Johnson does not get enough regular playing time to have much fantasy value, but his versatility is certainly something that can help major league teams win.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/24, 12:19 AM CT
Reed Johnson, starting in place of an injured Jim Edmonds, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI for the Cubs on Wednesday night. One of the hits was his fourth home run of the season.

Our View: Until we find word on the severity of Edmonds injury, he is scheduled for an MRI, we won't know if Johnson will be part of a platoon now that Alfonso Soriano is back or if he will play everyday.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 7/6, 6:01 PM CT
Reed Johnson had his best game since returning from the DL last Friday. He started in center field and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Our View: Johnson has started three of the four games in the outfield since his return. Still he will likely come off the bench once Alfonso Soriano returns from a broken hand.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 7/3, 9:05 AM CT
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Reed Johnson appears to have recovered from back spasms and is due to come off the DL on Wednesday.

Our View: Johnson will likely see playing time immediately while spelling Jim Edmonds in center field. Edmonds remains relatively hot, but is no doubt feeling the aches of playing in 11 straight games.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 6/24, 7:05 PM CT
The Cubs placed Reed Johnson on the DL Tuesday with back spasms.

Our View: Johnson had said he was feeling better and didn't think he needed a DL stint, but the Cubs needed to make a move to clear a spot for Sean Marshall, tonight's starter.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 6/23, 10:52 PM CT
Reed Johnson is likely to be placed on the DL to make room on the roster for Sean Marshall, who will be recalled to start on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Johnson hasn't played since last Tuesday because of back spasms.

Our View: The Cubs could use Johnson with Alfonso Soriano still out, but at least the move can be backdated. He would be eligible to return on July 3.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 6/20, 9:01 AM CT
Reed Johnson, who is battling back spasms, thinks he is ready to return to action, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Johnson said, "I don't want to say I am 100 percent yet, but the way it's been progressing the last couple days, if I continue to go that direction, I'll be OK."

Our View: With Soriano out, the Cubs needs his speed on the basepaths, as he racked up 12 doubles and four stolen bases over 56 games this season.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 6/18, 11:09 PM CT
Reed Johnson sat out Wednesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with back stiffness after a first-base collision on Tuesday night with first baseman Willy Aybar.

Our View: Piniella said Johnson was available in an emergency and could have pinch-hit if needed so it doesn't sound like the injury is too serious.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 6/15, 9:30 AM CT
Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Reed Johnson would likely get the bulk of the at-bats in the leadoff spot while left fielder Alfonso Soriano is on the disabled list with a broken left hand, this according to the Daily Herald.

Our View: Piniella has tried with Eric Patterson and Ryan Theriot but Johnson is his No. 1 hitter moving forward. Johnson hit a 3-run homer in the second inning on Saturday to lead the Cubs to a victory.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/14, 3:03 PM CT
Reed Johnson got a little revenge on his old club on Saturday. The outfielder had only one hit, but it was a three-run homer off ace Roy Halladay.

Our View: Between Johnson and Eric Hinske, the Blue Jays can't seem to handle their former teammates this year. It's too bad they don't face the Mets because Carlos Delgado could use the boost.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 6/4, 12:51 AM CT
The Cubs pulled the 9-6 win over the Padres this evening and did so with opportunistic base running. The Cubs finished with six total stolen bases on the night, including two by outfielder Reed Johnson .

Our View: Mike Fontenot, Ryan Theriot, Alfonso Soriano, and Ronny Cedeno added the other swipes, though Cedeno was also caught stealing once.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 5/17, 11:51 AM CT
Reed Johnson is going to platoon with aging vet Jim Edmonds in center field, according to MLB.com. Edmonds is expected to get starts against right-handed pitchers and Johnson is to start against lefties. Johnson isn't bothered by a platoon, and said, "When I came into this situation, I didn't really have too many expectations as far as playing time went. I was just kind of taking care of my business as far as going down to the cage and getting my work in, working out in the outfield with third-base coach Mike Quade and making my defense better. You know the playing time is just going to take care of itself."

Our View: Johnson has fared well with the Cubs this season, and is worth keeping on your roster and using for favorable left-handed pitching matchups, like today against Zach Duke (2-2 4.04 ERA) of the Pirates.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 4/10, 8:39 AM CT
Reed Johnson is likely to play over the weekend, as the Phillies will be using lefties Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer, according to the Chicago Sun Times. The former member of the Blue Jays has fared very well in his platoon role in center field with the Cubs, as he holds a .375 average over 16 at-bats.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 4/6, 1:35 PM CT
Reed Johnson will make his second consecutive start for the Cubs in center field today, according to MLB.com. Felix Pie is still nursing a sore hand, and Johnson is off to a good start as he is hitting 3-for-6 with two RBI so far.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 4/6, 7:06 AM CT
Reed Johnson made his first start with the Cubs on Saturday, according to the Chicago Tribune. He started in favor of Felix Pie in center field, and played well as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a 9-7 win over Houston.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 3/25, 8:05 PM CT
In his first start with his new employer, outfielder Reed Johnson put his best foot forward, posting two hits, including a double, scoring twice Tuesday in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Two days after he was released by Toronto, Johnson agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract with the Cubs who hope to utilize the veteran in a platoon with young Felix Pie, primarily fielding Reed against left-handed pitching. Early indications show it was a wise move.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersTuesday 3/25, 1:13 PM CT
Recently released Toronto outfielder Reed Johnson has found a new home with the Chicago Cubs. He played five season with the Jays, while holding a .281 batting average. The 31-year-old veteran is expected to be in uniform as the Cubs face San Francisco in Cactus League play later Tuesday.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 3/24, 3:57 PM CT
Reed Johnson, who was released by the Blue Jays on Sunday, and is expected to clear waivers because of $3.275 million salary, is reported to be talking to the Red Sox, Rays and Rangers. Fox Sports notes that the Cubs have been the most persistent suitor in early discussions. Chicago would prefer to limit the number of at-bats Pie, a 23-year-old lefty, has against lefty pitchers. Johnson, who was limited to 79 games in 2007 due to a herniated disk in his back, was released when the Blue Jays decided to go with Shannon Stewart as their primary option in left field.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 3/23, 9:14 AM CT
Reed Johnson has been released by the Jays, according to CBSsports.com. After being released the 31-year old Johnson stated, "I don't have any hard feelings. I don't have much of a choice right now except to move on. It's really all I can say." Shannon Stewart has won the starting gig in left field.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 3/22, 1:22 PM CT
The Globe and Mail report that rumors on the Toronto front have the Blue Jays quietly placing Reed Johnson on waivers. General manager J.P. Ricciardi said before the Grapefruit League game on Saturday against the Yankees that Johnson was not on waivers; but where there is smoke, there is a disappointed big leaguer. The Blue Jays soured on Johnson last season when he didn't show the promise they had hoped, and the front office followed up this winter by signing Shannon Stewart. The report notes that both players will not make the team, according to manager John Gibbons, and by all indications, Stewart is expected to survive the spring and make the opening day roster. Neither player has much fantasy value and Johnson has zero until he can find a team to play for, if in fact he was released.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/21, 5:16 PM CT
Reed Johnson and Shannon Stewart continue to battle for playing time in the Blue Jays OF, this according to a report on the AP. “Shannon and I are happy and we can play well together,” Johnson said. “I understand why they brought him in." Johnson really hit poorly last season with just a .236 mark a year after being a borderline all-star, and while Stewart is years removed from being a fantasy factor, he can still hit as he batted .290 last season. At this point neither player has separated himself form the other, so neither is worthy of a look in mixed leagues as of yet.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 2/25, 3:12 PM CT
The Globe and Mail suggest that the market for Reed Johnson is, in the words of one front-office source “non-existent." The primary reason for the lack of interest in the veteran is because his ailing back. With the depth in the Toronto outfield, the paper suggests that the team might listen to offers for young prospect, Adam Lind, who could be packaged with a young pitcher or a reliever.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 1/2, 1:01 PM CT
The Blue Jays signed Reed Johnson to a one-year contract Wednesday worth $3.27 million. Johnson hit just .236 with two homers in 276 at-bats last year, but he could receive a decent amount of playing time in the outfield in '08.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 8/16, 7:25 AM CT
Reed Johnson is struggling to regain his quickness on the bases after having back surgery earlier in the year, John Gibbons told the AP. Johnson returned to the club in early July. Johnson has never been a dynamic base-stealing threat, so these numbers don't necessarily alter his value that much. The bigger issue is the idea that he might not be 100 percent healed yet.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 7/6, 9:23 PM CT
The Blue Jays activated Reed Johnson from the 60-day disabled list before Friday's game against Cleveland, according to the AP. He had been sidelined since April 12 after undergoing surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back. Toronto's projected leadoff hitter at the start of the season, Johnson batted in the two hole Friday, behind center fielder Vernon Wells.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 6/30, 8:59 AM CT
Reed Johnson began a rehab assignment on Thursday. He was 2-for-4 with a homer and a double in the game. Johnson should return from his back surgery soon after the All-Star break.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersWednesday 6/20, 5:31 AM CT
Reed Johnson hopes to return following the All-Star break, but his rehab has been slowed by soreness in his legs, the AP reports. He had surgery on a herniated disk in his lower back two months ago.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 4/16, 2:08 PM CT
Reed Johnson needs surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back and will be sidelined until at least July, according to the AP. Johnson was placed on the DL last Wednesday with the injury. Adam Lind will continue to start in left field in Johnson's place.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 4/13, 8:01 PM CT
Reed Johnson was placed on the DL Friday with a sore back, according to the AP. He underwent an MRI on Friday, but the Blue Jays are still awaiting the results. "We're still evaluating it right now," general manager J.P. Ricciardi said. "We'll know more through the weekend. He's got some discomfort in his back, but we haven't been able to pinpoint it." Johnson missed two weeks of spring training with this injury, so the fact that it's popped up again is certainly a concern.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersFriday 3/9, 9:17 AM CT
Reed Johnson expects his back to still be stiff over the next week, but he felt good enough on Thursday to make his first game appearance of the spring (albeit in a "B" game), the Blue Jays official site reports. Johnson is also expected to play Friday.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersThursday 3/8, 8:12 AM CT
Reed Johnson hit off a batting cage Wednesday, though he's still at least a week away from playing. He's dealing with a stiff lower back.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSunday 3/4, 6:39 PM CT
Reed Johnson has been taking it easy thus this spring far due to a lower back strain, according to the AP. It's unclear when he'll be able to perform without limitation.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 2/3, 8:41 AM CT
The Blue Jays signed Reed Johnson to a one-year, $3.075 million deal on Friday, according to the Globe and Mail. Reed hit .319 with 12 homers and 49 RBI in 461 at-bats last year.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 9/30, 8:31 AM CT
The Blue Jays have decided to shut down Reed Johnson for the remainder of the season, according to the Toronto Star. He apparently has been playing through a stress fracture in his lower right shin for 4-6 weeks. "I'd been having good days and bad days," said Johnson, "but the good days slowly started weeding themselves out."
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersSaturday 7/29, 9:54 AM CT
Reed Johnson will be the everyday left fielder now that Alex Rios has returned from the disabled list, according to the Toronto Sun. This means that Frank Catalanotto will get most of his playing time as the designated hitter.
Reed Johnson, CF, Los Angeles DodgersMonday 7/24, 4:23 PM CT
When Alexis Rios returns from the disabled list, manager John Gibbons plans on giving Reed Johnson the majority of starts in left field, according to the Blue Jays website. "We plan on playing Reed a lot. We think he's earned that," Gibbons said.
