Jason Stanford, P, Thursday 6/21, 8:55 AM CT
As a result of the Indians designating 42-year-old veteran Roberto Hernandez for assignment, Jason Stanford will remain with the team as a reliever. “We were wrestling with some decisions with Jake [Westbrook] coming back,” general manager Mark Shapiro told the Akron Becaon Journal. “We felt that Stanford gave us excellent depth as a starter while Jeremy Sowers is working to find himself in the minors.”

Jason Stanford allowed six runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work on Tuesday, and it could be his last outing as a member of the Indians starting rotation. Injured regular Jake Westbrook will rejoin the team in time to start on Sunday, which means the Tribe must free up a roster spot. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Stanford is not only out of options, but also has an out clause in his contract that allows him to become a free agent on June 30 if he’s not on the 25-man roster. Nevertheless, he could be the odd man out once Westbrook returns. “Whatever their plans, it’s up to them to decide,” Stanford said.

Jason Stanford was called up in time for Thursday's game at Florida and came through, working six strong innings (one run, seven strikeouts). It's unclear what role Stanford will have with the Indians going forward, as Jake Westbrook is expected to come off the disabled list next week. Stanford, 30, hadn't worked in a major league game since 2004; he's coming back from elbow surgery.
